I haven't seen the Gentleman in a month. He volunteered immediately after Helene, but wasn't part of the first wave for deployment. Mid-Oct, he received the orders. Suddenly, he was gone - in just two short days.
12 hr days, no days off. No end date given. Very different mode for our little family. He is the caregiver for me, his parents, the teens they adopted, several years ago. I'm disabled, several autoimmune conditions, immunocompromised. Here I am, learning how to survive alone, keep our family in order, by myself. I never really thought I could, until now.
But God is Good. my Gentleman is Clark Kent. An Eagle Scout, a Ranger. His whole family is that way. They learned that the only thing we have is our capacity to help. He's the guy helping strangers, stranded on the highway - while vehicles speed past, barely swerving, nearly colliding into him. Rescuing campers, hikers, people in critical need, here at the Lake where he normally hangs his Ranger hat. As much as I miss him, need his help... the world needs him. I'm proud of who he is, what he does. Every time he tells me of someone giving their thanks, I feel okay. Because then it feels like others might be caring for him, looking out for him, as well.
This evening he learned they are being granted Thanksgiving Day off - his first day to rest, after 4 weeks, non-stop. I'm going to drive to Hendersonville to be with him for Thanksgiving - 350 miles. No biggie, compared to what they are doing. These men and women are far from their families, most won't see the people they love on this Holiday.
I've been searching for a restaurant that has capacity for a small group of men and women on Thursday, for a group Thanksgiving meal. Traditional holiday fare not required. The most important thing is that they can get out of their work gear, sit together, and enjoy each other's company - away from their efforts. The enormous feats of labor they endure, every day, without respite, or family. Away from their homes, their regular jobs. Engineers, Rangers, Chiefs.
Many thanks to the incredibly kind people who've given time to thank these volunteers. It's physical, dangerous work - and anything but easy. Knowing strangers treat my Gentleman kindly helps. Then I know that others appreciate his dedication, too. That the sacrifice he and others made, because they knew they had energy to help - the thanks y'all give help encourage them.
I just wanted to pop back in and say thank you for all the love on my last post about Somethings. It’s honestly amazing to see how much this community cares about teen mental health—especially with everything folks are going through after Hurricane Helene.
I got a ton of DMs with questions (y’all are awesome), so I thought I’d share a quick FAQ in case anyone else is wondering the same things:
If this sounds like something that could help your teen (or someone you know), shoot me a DM or check out our website to sign up.
And for anyone who’s been through tough times, what other mental health resources or tips have you found helpful? I’d love to hear about them and keep the conversation going.
Thanks again for being such an incredible community 💙
A friend of mine created this detailed dog training series a couple of years ago and I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. She's a fully accredited dog trainer and built this course over several years in order to save new dog owners money. Hiring a private trainer for your pup normally costs $100+ per hour and taking them to puppy preschool is typically $150 for 6 classes that just go over the basics (sit, stay etc.). Not to mention if you want to take your dog to the more advanced classes after puppy preschool it's hundreds more. She made this course so she can spend time with her pups whilst still helping people train their dogs.
Adrienne teaches everything covered there in this one course so you can teach your pup in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace and for a fraction of the price. The best part is, she works with you as you teach your pup, you can reach out to her whenever you run into any issues and she'll help. So you still get the 1 on 1 expert opinion that you'd get from a private trainer, all you have to do is send her an explanation or video of the problem you're trying to address or issues in teaching that you're having.
Delete this post if it's not allowed but I just thought this might help some new dog parents :)
Some of you may have seen our post a couple of months ago where we were looking for people to trial our business, for those who didn't here's a quick rundown. A friend and I thought it would be cool if you could turn any photo you want into a paint by numbers kit. That way you can paint your dog, cat, partner, the whole family or whatever you want without having to be an artist.
We looked up the idea and found that the current stores in the market were ridiculously expensive or only offered kits without a frame or with a DIY frame (who wants to put together their own frame? Don't you just want to open the box and start painting). So we looked around and talked to a bunch of suppliers and eventually we were able to produce custom paint by number kits cheaper then anywhere else and already framed.
We reached out to you here on Reddit asking you to test them out at cost price and we've received some amazing feedback as a result. Thank you if you were one of our OG customers! We want to continue to grow and get more feedback and reviews though so we're re-opening the offer in case you missed it the first time around or you want to order some more kits.
You can use the code "COSTPRICEREDDIT" to get our kits for cost price (our margins are pretty slim right now, we want to be as affordable as possible). You can get up to 4 kits at that price so feel free to buy a few and plan a date night, family activity or just get your Christmas shopping done early. If you've already ordered with that code it has no been reset so you can get the deal again!
We look forward to getting more feedback and hopefully you'll love our kits enough to spread the word to your family and friends!

I have a court date tomorrow for a ticket. How does court actually work for a traffic ticket?
These guys couldn't build a garden shed. $625k for a semi custom townhouse that is cheap, cheesy, shoddy. DO NOT HIRE CSBD to build your home
I’m a student ambassador for Somethings - a state-endorsed, free mental health service for teens exclusively in North Carolina. We connect teens with trained young adult peer specialists who can provide guidance, empathy, and support during tough times.
I'm trying to as many parents and teens who might benefit from additional support as possible especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene, especially those navigating challenges like anxiety, depression, etc. Here's where we're mentioned on the NCDHHS site (check the second slide of the carousel), and additionally here's our website outlining our partnerships with the state: www.somethings.com/northcarolina
Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions or you can sign your teen up at our site of interested!
I put my new 6-song EP out today. I record under the name “water through your open hands”. Written and recorded in East Flat Rock.
My best friend is giving birth soon and I live many miles away. I want to send her a care package and I also want to include resources she can lean on. I know she's going to want to build a system of support there. For new moms in Hendersonville, what would y'all recommend? Even if it's just a really active Facebook or a discord group or whatever, anything would be helpful to start helping her build that community.
As a non-mom my ideal situation is her just having places to reach out to get help when she's freaking out or feeling alone.
I am looking for a live Xmas tree that I can plant in the ground after Xmas. With all the trees destroyed, I really want to plant one.
Has anybody had any luck with these? Does it really work?
Where can I find these in either Henderson or Buncombe County?
Maybin/Kirby just sent me a letter saying that the 25 USD they used to charge for recycling + trash is now only covering the trash service, without recycling and tried to spin it in a positive way.
What other services are in the area? I rather switch than to abide by someone that buys the competition to raise prices.
Moved here recently. Wife's birthday is coming up and I would like to get her a gift certificate for a massage. We came from a big city that had really nice classy places so I'm looking for something similar. What are your suggestions?
Hi all, I’m looking for recommendations for a fencing company to put up a privacy fence enclosing about a 0.6 acre. Does anyone have a local company they could recommend? Thank you!
Does anyone know of a low cost spaying/neutering service still operating in the area.? After Helene, we took in two feral kittens and have been making them part of our household. In the past we used Brother Wolf, but it seems they are not operating. Limited income here, but couldn't leave the kittens to fend for themselves.
If so, are the shelves fully stocked?
Now that it's been a while since I've worked there, was reminded of how much I wanted to put the word out there about this... Disaster, since they seem to be offering a lot of roles right now.
Do not work here if you:
It's like a vortex of despair. Everyone who's worked there so far has either quit (keep in mind opened in June), been fired for thinking about quitting, or they started spiraling. And then they quit. Save yourself the trouble unless you can handle 3 months of all that and then dip with your bag. Yes I'm partially still being petty but also just genuinely don't want good workers getting sucked in here with their false promises, especially kids.
