I’ve started to enjoy the most recent straight whisky’s and bourbons I’ve had at friends homes/restaurants/bars and am thinking it’s time to invest in my own. Was wondering what I should be considering as far as beginner friendly whisky’s in a mid-tier price point. I’m more than okay with more inexpensive options as well, but want to stay out of the insanenly priced drinks as I’m not (yet) a snob, nor am I rich. One key factor is availability/acessibility, both at liquor stores and bars. I’m looking to find a good go-to all around. Any and all varieties of whisky welcome, I’m deliberately keeping an open mind.
In this case I’d like it to be a beverage to be served near or on the rocks, as opposed to in a cocktail, despite my enjoyment of a nice whisky sour.
I found a Cruiskeen Lawn Mitchell’s Old Irish Whiskey Ceramic Jug that does not have the printed caution about refilling with another product on it. It does have Glasgow Stamp on the bottom. All other Jugs I've seem have the caution label. I'm wondering if this is a fake?
Looking to complete my collection of Ardbeg Day releases, and need to find 2011 (Alligator), 2012 Day), and 2013 (Ardbog)
Does anyone know if these were sold in boxes? The photos I’m seeing don’t show a box.
Thanks!
Scotch noob who enjoys Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or.
Shower thought, is there an American Whisky with a similar style/taste?
Never drank any whisky/bourbon before, ordered a couple of taster bottles from JD no7, JW red and J&B, the only one i could somewhat appreciate was the JD, ordered 2 full bottles of Gentleman Jack but still did not really like the spicyness and tingling on my tongue from it.
Looked around this sub for some time and was keen to try out Maker's Mark since it might have been the rye spicyness i didnt really like, arrived today and oh lord, so smooth, no spicyness, very mellow drink to just sip on neat, absolutely love it! ordered 4 1ltr bottles immediately :)
So glad i found this sub and the suggestions in it, want to keep the cost to around 40eur a bottle, the 1ltr MM is just above it, thank you so much people! :)
I noticed that my recently restocked Arran 10 (bottled May 15th 2023) is much darker than the one I had before (bottled December 8th 2022)
In the picture I compared it to the Arran Sherry Cask and the colour is close to the Sherry Casks.
In my opinion the current Arran 10 also tastes more intense than the one it replaced.
Anyone else noticed the same with recent Arran 10 bottles?
Just got it today. Store rep said it came in last week and been sitting on the shelf. Always wanted to try it. Will report back.
Greetings all.
I was gifted a small decanter set a couple xmasses ago and never used it, I pulled it out to give it a go, and well.. I was a little shocked.
Inside the square decanter was some sort of white residue... never seen anything like it. It wsa mostly on teh bottom, but also in a couple of the upper corners. The Decanter was firmly sealed, so I am not sure what it could be. I set about cleaning it, via internet recomendations, but most were for wine stains.
I tried Letting it soak with warm water and white vinegar overnight. This seemed to remove most of the big chunks.
I then tried salt and warm water to act as an abrassive to scour it clean. This kinda worked.
Last night I let is sit overnight with Baking Soda and warm water, gave it some swishign also to help scour it, and it seemed ok, so I let it dry.
Now the White stuff is gone, but it still looks like some sort of residue remains on the glass, kinda like sticker adhesive. I could not get a decent picture of it, else I'd share it here. I feel liek i coudl scrub it off if I had some kind of sponge or something that would get in there, but I have a read a ot of stuff saying those thigns dont really exist?
DOes anyone have an experience with something like this or any ideas?
Thank you
UPdate: Got some pics. I did clear off a lot of the bottom gunk using a piece of a magic eraaser sponge and a chopstick.
Hi all,
I'm getting more interested in whisky. Slowly building a collection to enjoy at a later date. In some cases I might want to buy or sell from other collectors. Can someone recommend a good website for that? Is there also a website that indicates the current value of a certain edition or bottle?
Thanks!
Hi. What will happen if I leave a bottle of whiskey opened without a cork.
What will happen with a content???
Will alcohol evaporate if so how fast. Thank you
Tonight is a face-off between 2 brothers from a highly reputable lineage. The older brother, Lagavulin 16, has been the quintessential peat whisky for years with a stellar reputation. It's the peat whisky that other peats look up to and compare themselves with. The younger brother, Lagavulin 8, is a newcomer, released in 2014. Both are today in the Lagavulin core range. Let me try them side by side.
Colour wise, the Laga 8 is much lighter being an ex bourbon cask. Laga 16 is rich golden from ex bourbon and sherry cask. Laga 16 wins, looking more luxurious and more expensive.
On the nose, Laga 8, 48%ABV, is very light, with sweet fruitiness. Mild on smoke. Laga 16, 43%ABV, has salty notes, more intense sweetness, and more aroma. Again, Laga 16 wins.
On palate, Laga 8 is pepper spicy and with citric fruit notes. Feels a bit young and light. Nice mild peat flavour. Laga 16 is salty, smooth, sweet, and deep peat flavour. Straight away, it sets itself apart with more sophistication and quality to its younger brother.
Laga 16 wins easily! It's not to say the Laga 8 is not good. It's a good whisky when drank on its own. But when it's up against the boss, it has much to learn. Give it another 8 years, and he may catch up. Slàinte!
