Trying to find a forum..

I found a link to a pipe forum on this sub to a contest where around six people had a brand new briar passed between them with the soul purpose of breaking the pipe by smoking it too much. It was an experiment to see how durable briar pipes were. Thank you

Balkan recommendations

Drop your favorite Balkan blends in the comments and I’ll give them a try. Right now Balkan Saisieni is my favorite but I’d like to branch out.

Fruit Loops

So, bit of a weird one here- stocking up like I do once a year and was wondering if someone has had a pipe tobacco that tatses like fruit loops/is very very close. My current weekly rotation is MacBaren VRC and Lane BCA. Im looking for a new potential add to the rotation and it got me thinking of what I really crave! Also should I just go ahead and stock up on MB blends since they'll be closed by 2027 from what I read? Im smoking a pipe once a week at the minimum now but have put a significant dent in about a 1LB of BCA. Any recommendations would be highly sought after! I more so also love anything with a pleasant room note. You guys rock!

When did you start picking out flavors?

I'm only 6 bowls into my pipe journey but I've tried 6 different blends... I'll try my 7th blend tomorrow Orlik Golden Sliced but I know I'm only at the very very beginning of picking out flavors.

I'm not close at all to any descriptions from reviews.

On the positive side even my first bowl and every one after I am able to do better than hot air but I'm certainly not picking out specific flavors to the point that I didn't really get vanilla out of vanilla custard and didn't get much of any of the smoke off NM 965 I expected.

Ironically all these 6 blends taste more similar than different to me.

What was it in your journey you did to start picking out more flavors?

Is it just smoke 100 bowls and it will come to you or is there something I should be doing?

I'm focusing on slow sips and working on developing an easy cadence but that's about all so far.

What helped you learn?

New Rossi pipe

I thought I should get another pipe while cigar shopping at Jonathon Robert Fielding and saw this beauty. I also bought this tin of pipe tobacco as an upgrade to the pouch of Sir Walter Raleigh. I am very pleased with this tin. First few smokes were smooth, but had a touch of spiciness which I thoroughly enjoy. Its like a drinking light rye compared to a bourbon. Now to try Nightcap.

Just had a pipe revelation/ rejuvenation. Here is how.

When I first started with a pipe I had filter pipes. I never used the filter and was use to the wide open draw on a pipe.

I then started buying better built more costly pipes that were unfiltered. They looked great and felt great but I always thought the airflow/draw was too tight on them.

The first unfiltered pipe I got was a cheap $30ish pipe and at the time I thought I got a bad pipe or at least a unfinished stem. The hole in the stem seemed way to small. But I smoked it and had some okay smokes out of it.

Then one day I thought about drilling out the stem/mouth bit whatever you may call it. I was sitting at my desk and had a drill bit way to big to do the job. I removed the stem anyways and pushed the bit into the end of the stem that goes into the shank and started twisting a bit just to see how easily the martial was to work with. I made a little divot maybe 2 MM deep and stopped. Never thought much about it, but that pipe smoked/tasted a lot better after.

Flashforward a bit and I now just bought a much more expensive unfiltered pipe and, it did not smoke very well. Nothing was right about it. It smoked too hot or too cool ( it keep going out). Or it was packed to tight or too loose. Nothing ever made it smoke good. I just let that bit sit there and go unused for a long while. Then When I was cleaning my cheap good smoking $30 pipe I noticed/remembered I put that small cut/indent/bowl shape into the end of the stem. I did the same to this much more expensive pipe and fuck me running it now smokes like a champ.

I tried taking pictures of it and no, It does not show. So here is a cheap ass MS paint explanation of what I mean. Here: https://imgur.com/a/COhiFLe

That little change made a big difference.

Crazy old man who cellars too much tobacco..... Now who is crazy?! Tobacco storing tips and links

I imagine with the news of Sutliff and Mac Baren Tobaccos being bought out and shut down, a bunch of you will be gathering your favorite blends. These work for any blend.

This is just meant to try to give an easy reference of storing tobacco. I have been storing for decades. Here is the best I can offer to help as it is. I am just listing links to Wally World since most in the US have one nearby. Links are just a reference to the Jar and size, you can obtain them however you want.

If you want something a bit different, I recommend these folks for containers and jars.

Fillmore Container & Jars

Jars, 4 sizes I use mostly.

4oz. Jars for 1oz or under (samples)

8oz Jars I use for 2oz

16oz Jars I use for 4oz

Quart Jars used for 5oz to 8 oz.

I do have a few of these I use, mine are dark amber/brown though and I've had for years.

1/2 Gallon Jars for larger amounts 1lb to 1.25 maybe 1.5 lbs. pressed.

Anything over this amount I got Large Jars from Filmore to hold multiple pounds.

Have fun stocking up while it lasts!

I stick to mason jars for a good reason, they work very well!

My crazy collection! Feel free to downvote as usual!

NPD and a new Peterson blend

Picked this up at the local cigar shop because my latest order isn’t here yet and I’m running low on non aromatics. The cob was $7 so I figured I might as well get it just for fun

Trouble packing my bowl with scraps from flakes

I have been enjoying PS402 luxury twist flake quite a bit lately. When rubbing out the flake and loading the bowl I have not had any issues. Today I noticed I had quite a bit of the scraps from the bags, probably 2-3 bowls worth so I decided to load up my bowl just using the scraps. They are much smaller bits then what I get from rubbing out the flakes or any other cut Iv had.

Twice I have tried smoking a bowl with the scraps and about half way through it seems to pack tight and gets harder to smoke. After this happens I can’t seem to get it to smoke cool and it starts tasting ashy/ cigarettey.

Any advice for what I’m doing wrong here? I am assuming its getting packed to tight since these little bits fill the bowl so much more then any other cut I have seen.
