No review, just appreciation

Found it on the secondary market for €120, and jumped on it. I don’t regret my choice one bit. Anyone else try it, and what do you think?

Soon to be groom gift

So my buddies and I get each other gifts when we each of us get married and the rum drinker of the group is getting married next. I’m asking for a suggestion for a bottle around $100 to $150 of great rum for him to enjoy. Any suggestions?

A love letter to this sub

I’ve been on the rum journey for about 8 years now, starting from Bacardi and coke (ugh… young me was disgusting) to now (just hit my hundredth bottle). For the last 5+ years of this journey, this sub has been an amazing resource. I’m a rare poster/constant watcher type, and love browsing the reviews people post on here (many have led to purchases and occasional new favorites). I’ve slowly grown from total noob to amateur aficionado, and I just want to thank all the posters, watchers and other rum lovers for being with me on the journey.

Kahiko Punch - finally acquired!

All syrups made exactly as spec’d in Smuggler’s Cove. Hibiscus liqueur made with Appleton Signature Blend. Cocktail used 1.5 oz W&N and .5 oz S&C.

I find it to be a tad too sour for my taste, so next time I’ll use a little less passion and a little more hibiscus.

Overall very very good, and I concur with most of Reddit that it’s a top tier recipe in SC.

Cheers!

Revisiting Bacardi Ocho

This bottle has served me well in cocktails calling for an aged rum in a blend. That's pretty much all this is used for, but it does the job well.

I've never actually sat down to sip it before, so let's have a go...

The nose: Quite sweet, light varnish, sweet fruit like a mango or similar, a little wood.

The mouth: Not much happening really. Very slight burn, pretty sweet, little vanilla, light spice, not really getting anything else.

The finish: Very light sweet finish and dies out quite fast.

Pretty unimpressive overall. This is great in a cocktail blend as it keeps the alcohol content, but it allows the other rum(s) in the blend to shine through. This one doesn't really seem to add anything flavourwise.

3 out of 10.

Cuban Party

Hi. I got invited to a Cuban themed party this Friday. What would be a great bottle of rum to bring as a gift? I’m located in the US. Thank you!

Visiting Curaçao and Aruba on a cruise

We'll be stopping in Curaçao and Aruba, and I'd like to take advantage of anything local and/or rums that I can't get in the US. I've got a small list from past posts on bottles to watch for, but not of any specific stores to focus on.

Are there any recommended shops that I should attempt to get to for the best selection/price?

Looking for a new rum

Hello there, Canadian from BC here. Due to a recent situation I’ve been looking to find alternative brands of rum. Although I haven’t had rum in a while so I’m not looking for anything strong (however it’s still appreciated). Is there any local brands that I should give a try?

Good cachaça in the US

I am well aware of the commonly available brands. Avua, pitu, 51, Novo Fogo, etc.

Any online merchants that might have a wider selection available?

I’m Looking for a Good Jamaican White Rum

I’m looking to try and recreate the Mai Tai as made by The Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki, Hawai’i. They use a white rum and a dark rum float. https://youtu.be/I7azpvl_VK0 for reference.

They suggest a higher quality white rum and dark rum.

The little bit of research I’ve done around Reddit is that I’d be better off using all Jamaican rums. I’ve read good things about Appleton Estate for a dark rum, but I’m left wondering about a good white rum that I can find in the State of Ohio.

ISO Big Black Dick Rum

Hi! I found a rum in the Cayman Islands called Big Black Dick. Was wondering if there was a place to get it in Nassau. My cruise is going there next month, and would like to bring back a bottle.

Will it rum and coke? Great House 2024

It’s been a half-serious goal of mine to mix every brown spirit on my bar with coke. Well, dry January is over and it’s time to start. First up: Great House 2024! While I personally enjoyed 2023 quite a lot, I understand why everyone is generally down on it and I agree that ‘24 is a return to form. Here are the stream of consciousness notes I texted my friends as I engaged this adventure:

It’s very sweet. The carbonation from the coke seems to have totally died when combined with ice and probably the hefty 57% ABV is contributing even further. So it’s not really “rum and coke” but more like “rum and sweet syrup with clovey coke flavor”

Nose is pleasant. You can tell the funk is in there but the acetone is gone and it’s just mellow and fruity.

I went 1:2 on the ratio - the thought of diluting my beloved great house more than that didn’t sit right

I just dropped a sphere in there and poured directly over, so it’s improving as it cools. The syrupy sweetness is muted by the cold and I’m getting a little bitterness now which I think balances it out

Just expressed a lime peel over it. Not picking it up in the flavor at all but the aroma is improved. Actually after stirring the oil in the aroma is quite inviting

The funk is most present in the long finish - the coke flavor dies faster than the rum flavor. The up front flavor is not really compelling but I’m finding myself satisfied a good 10-20 seconds after the sip, as if the initial flavor had been better

Just put a healthy squeeze of lime in there. That’s a huge improvement - disclaimer I struggle to enjoy most no-acid cocktails to begin with, perhaps the lime is just hitting my personal preferences. The lime in there now seems to accentuate the pineapple in the rum - I actually think it tastes more like the neat rum after the addition of lime than it tasted when it was just rum and coke

Overall 5.5/10. Drinkable. Even when mixed the rum definitely provides a long and complex finish representative of the base product. But the coke is really pulling the rum down. This cocktail is lesser than the sum of its parts

Revisiting Plantation OFTD

This is my second bottle of this stuff. Already I can say that it's great in cocktails to add a strong dark caramel heat with slight complexity.

As a sipper? Probably not as much, but I'm back with it again to see how my palate takes to it...

The nose: Smoky, sweet bbq sauce, mild varnish, oak and caramel with strong spice that overpowers most of it.

The mouth: Naturally at 69%, there's quite a burn to this, but not nearly as bad as I would have expected. Dark caramel with some banana Jamaican funk comes through a little. Hard to make much else out due to the heat.

The finish: It's mostly all heat, but doesn't last too long. Slight waves of caramel and spice come through until the end.

For sure this is a good cocktail rum, but it's not that enjoyable as a sipper, not least because of the burn, but it just masks any other notes from coming through. I can handle the burn, it's just that I find the actual flavour is very thin and if that proof was pulled back, then it would open up a lot more. But that's not the idea of this bottle, it's meant to be a kick in the ass. That's why diluted in a cocktail, I think there is a bit more complexity to be experienced.

I have to give two separate scores because it's the type of rum that would be unfair to base solely on sipping...

5.5 out of 10 (as a sipper) 8 out of 10 (as a cocktail mixer).

Little haul/restock

Took advantage of an Amazon sale the other day to try a couple of new bottles and a restock for cocktails/mixers. Limited to what was on sale but realised I’d never tried the non spiced original Chairman’s. Cut To The Spice I’ve heard good things about, have a bottle of the Cut To Smoke, that reminds me of a pub ashtray (in a pleasant way). Should have probably picked up a bottle of Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva or Mautuano, but there’s only so much room.

Wray and Nephew production

I was watching a youtube video yesterday (whiskey distillers trying rums) and one of the hosts mentioned that they had heard W&N was ceasing production. This threw me a bit, as I'd seen no discussion to that effect on here, and to me W&N is one of the most widely available 'standard' rums that isn't Bacardi, Havana Club etc. Is there any truth to this, or is that person just talking out of their ass?
