This sub inspires me everyday….

And I love any excuse to use a swizzle stick!

The Floor is Lava

2 oz dark rum (Hamilton 86)

1/2 oz lime juice

3 1/2 oz guava soda (Bundaberg)

1/2 oz grenadine (Liber & Co)

(I also added 4 drops of Bittermens ‘Elemakule Tike bitter and a dropper of saline) Build in Collins or Zombie glass. Rum, lime and soda. Add crushed ice and swizzle using swizzle stick or barspoon, adding ice as needed to top off glass. Float grenadine on top of ice.

I also garnished with a couple sprigs of my baby mint from the garden 🪴

Aged rum for mixing

I've been using Appleton 12 as my aged rum for mixing and have no complaints, beside price.. I would like to save it for spirit forward cocktails like a rum fashioned or sipping it neat. What is a good alternative that's less expensive for mixing? Doorly 8, RL Seales 10, Plantation 5?

Appleton 12 is close to $2/oz for me where the others are around $1 or less. The exception being RL seales 10 and Doorly's 12. Both being around $1.50/oz.

I should mention I'm looking for non-demerara style, which is why excluded El Dorado.

Pardon what might be a stupid question. But adding a finish to a rum. like a cognac or sherry finish. Whats the difference if you just add a bit of cognac or sherry to the rum vs cask finish?

Don Q Cristal or Flor DE Cana 4 Extra Seco

Been using Don Q for my non frills rum drinks. I've never had Fdc4, but was considering getting a handle of it over DQC. I can get a handle of donQ for $22 and Fdc4 for $30. Is it better?

What other cheap mixer rums are in the same price point that might better? Also I have other rums, again, I'm just looking for a no frills mixer.

Captain Morgan Gingerbread Hunt, Looking for a Friend!

Title says it all, l have a friend who absolutely loves this stuff but it's been discontinued. I've been on the hunt but haven't had much luck.

Tomorrow I'll be checking with a store that winesearcher claims has it, but something tells me their stock just hasn't been updated.

Any website suggestions or ideas anyone can recommend for this wild goose chase?

S&C or Appleton Signature?

Hello people! Newbie to run here, so far I have a Plantation Isle of Fiji and a Zacapa Solera 23. Tonight I have a choice between taking home a bottle of Appleton Signature or Smith and Cross, which would be best for drinking neat do y’all think?

Visiting San Diego - this store has SO MUCH RUM, what to do I get?

I'm from the east coast and frankly I'm overwhelmed by options

at this liquor store

I'm immediately drawn to some of the Hamilton stuff, as that's scarce back in Boston. But there's lots of brands I've never heard of, or only heard in passing.

I'm aiming to bring back maybe 2 bottles total, with a budget between 120-200$ I love demerara rum, and am always after good Jamaican rum

Remove tax label

Anybody an idea how to remove those ugly tax labels from the bottle top without actually opening the bottle? Can’t really soak the bottle without the brand label coming off… Thanks!

Oh my god

Just had this at a bar in Okinawa. Absolutely phenomenal. A funk bomb, with a nose of pineapple and acetone. I had it straight with a few drops of water, in very tiny sips over an hour or so. I love funky rums but it’s hard to find proper funky Jamaicans in Japan.

My girl (not generally a big rum fan, but likes it occasionally) had it over one big rock of ice. She hated it at first (it’s her first high ester rum) but after a few sips she started to enjoy it too.

The bar owner was a total rum geek (among other liquors) and had a phenomenal collection. He served it with a piece of chocolate made with black sugar, which paired perfectly with the rum.

At about US$135 a bottle it’s not something I’ll probably have again, but man. It was incredible.

How to enjoy good/expensive rum?

I have received an expensive bottle of rum as a present (El Dorado Versailles 2009) and I’m not quite sure how best to enjoy it.

I have a reasonably large rum collection but this is easily the most expensive bottle I’ve ever owned. Normally I’d enjoy a more expensive aged rum as an old fashioned or in the case of unaged rums/clairins maybe a daiquiri.

Neat with chocolate? Interested in any advice.
