Diatomaceous Earth - fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive in products including metal polishes and toothpaste, mechanical insecticide, absorbent for liquids, matting agent for coatings, reinforcing filler in plastics and rubber, anti-block in plastic films, porous support for chemical catalysts, cat litter, activator in blood clotting studies, a stabilizing component of dynamite, and a thermal insulator.

Is DE with less than 0.1% crystalline silica safe to use?

I'm based in Europe. The info on my DE says it's amorphous but it contains less than 0.1% of crystalline silica. Can I use it to combat the bedbugs? Or is it too risky for my lungs?

Cleaning up Diatomaceous Earth

I was recommended the one with insecticide to help with waterbug problem in my home. I sprinkled a little too much. I picked up most of it already but it’s been a pain to clean up and deal with. I can still smell it in my home. It’s windy in my area right now and I think the wind picked up some of the DE by doors and is spreading around the house. My eyes are a little irritated. Walking barefoot, my feet are a little irritated. Will I be okay? How can I stop more from spreading around. I’ve mopped like 10 times already.

Is DE useful if my location has high humidity year round?

Hi all, as captioned, I live in an area with really high humidity and quite a lot of rain, and I wonder if DE is useful if I use it for pest control? Or I get to re apply every few days?

Also, DE in general can be used against flying insects or rather ineffective?

I need help! Please!

We have a terrible flea infestation and I’m so torn at what to do. Every where I look, it is literally 50/50 about Food Grade DE! We treated our cats about 2 weeks ago with nexstar, and for the 1st week we were finding dead fleas. We didn’t have the money at the time to buy foggers to bomb the house, but now we do. However, now since it’s only been 2 weeks, I’m afraid to treat the cats again. But, if we now bomb the house, the cats will still have fleas on them. SO… I am just at a loss at what to do. I wondered if we were to put a little FGDE on them to help for the next 2 weeks until we could put another dose of nexstar and then bomb the house at the same time if that would be ok?? Then I thought maybe it would be good to also use FGDE around the house, but man… there are so many mixed reviews. I feel like I’m going out of my mind trying to figure out what the best and safest way to treat the house and cats is! My cats are both indoor males ages 6 and 8. Also, I'm scared about even using the foggers and would rather use anything than spraying those messy, potent things around! If anyone has any advice or could tell me what they have done if they had the misfortune of being in this same situation -I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thank you!

Can I change the colour of my diatomaceous earth bath mat?

Hey y’all I recently purchased a diatomaceous earth bath mat, partially because it was heavily discounted. It’s one of the thick stone-style ones. I’m not crazy about the colour, it’s a pale blue.

Does anyone know any way I could dye it or paint it?

Why has my de stopped working?

We have terrible ants where I live in an apartment except I don't have that problem. I started using DE mixed with water in a squirt bottle and I just sprayed all the entry points once and I have not had ants ever since.... Until now. I've sprayed and sprayed and it's not doing anything. The answer literally still trailing into my apartment.

I even tried using just the dry powder. Why has it stopped working? Help?

D Earth Flooding

I had put D Earth to get rid of some bugs that I saw hanging around in my apartment. I kinda was a bit heavy handed and put more then a dust layer. I did this on Friday and was going to clean everything up by Tuesday. However on Monday I had a flooding issue and now the D Earth is everywhere. You can feel it on the floor no matter how many times sweep and mop (Bleach, Fabulous, Vinegar, hot boiling water, soap. The floor now looks like a white paint tint. Also maintenance people brought industrial fans, and also the furniture looks like a thin layer of it also.

Any suggestions?

Building Home, Put DE in Walls?

So, I'm building a tiny home, and I've long been impressed with the effectiveness of diatomaceous earth for pest control.

Lately, I've been pondering long term protections against insects for the tiny home, and began wondering if DE was the way to go. My thought was that after the house is framed, and either before or after insulation goes in, I dust around it, then the dry wall goes up. Visually, it would be better than dusting around baseboards after the fact, if we did get bugs.

I know DE doesn't burn, so I don't think there's a fire hazard, but there's also the question of long-term effectiveness. I know it becomes less effective when damp and clumped, so maybe over time the humidity would render it ineffective. How long it lasts also becomes a factor... years? Then definitely worth it. A few months? Not worth it.

Thing is, I haven't really found much about this being a common practice, so I'm open to the idea that I'm just missing something blatantly obvious to others.

What do you all think?
