Motorcycle classes or dirt bike classes before getting bike?

Hello,

I saw a dual sport at the parking lot in front of my job a couple times. I thought it was cool and went down a rabbit hole on YouTube and I’m thinking of getting one.

Slight issue is that I don’t know how to ride a motorcycle.

Should I find a motorcycle class and just take that. Or put in the effort to find a dirt bike class and see if they’ll take beginners ?

My plan is to take the classes and when I’m good get the dual sport off road. Due to a promise to a family member I’ll probably not get on the road itself but just off-roading.

(I’m in Austin in case that’s useful information)

Drz400 for getting back into riding?

Hey all,

My buddy offered to sell me his 2006 DRZ400 for 3k. It's got 3600 miles on it. Would it be a good bike for getting back into riding and is this a pretty good deal? Everything seems to be stock and original. He told me it has sat for about 8 years.

I haven't ridden since 2017 when I hurt my talus bone and sold my old XT350.

Appreciate the input.

Suzuki Dr800 exhaust upgrade

Hi for all,

I bought two suzuki DR800 from early 1990’s. Put one bike on running condition and had a blast summer with moderate old lady. Lady is in original condition and stays like it.. but exhaust system is a different thing, because of the weight. Lots of different options but I want a single side exhaust. Any one has old ones lying around or have good experience of some?

Question for anyone who currently has or has had KLR 650 / Triumph Tiger 800/1200

Bonus points if you’ve owned any combination of these three. I’m currently in the market for a dual sport and have narrowed it down to one of those three choices. I’m curious to hear from someone who has real world experience owning these bikes and what your thoughts are on which one would suit me best for a 50/50 mix of road and trail riding.

I grew up riding dirt bikes/ATVs and then later got into street bikes. I’ve ridden a lot of different bikes but never had an opportunity to try out the KLR or the Tiger models. I’ve been reading a lot of good things about all of them and I’m torn on which one would be best for me. For reference I’m 6’1” / 240# I want to do a mix use of whichever bike I get. Basically ride to the trails and then back home. I don’t plan on doing any hardcore single track that would only be best suited for a purpose built dirt bike. I like the idea of the Tiger 1200 for the extra power it has and road comfort, but would I be sacrificing a lot of off road capability vs the KLR or even the Tiger 800? I’m not under any illusion that any of these options isn’t going to be good at everything but what do you feel would be the best option for what I’m looking to do? Thanks for your input!

Question regarding the CRF450X

Hey all.

I recently bought a CRF450X 2006, and i've been wondering what the 'button' above the choke is? I can't seem to find anything about it in the Manual.

Stumped by the durability of DRZs

Earlier this year I rode with a friend who rode on gravel/dirt roads as much as possible, while never oiling his foam air filter, only weekly cleaning and putting it back bone dry. Along with a big bore kit the thing ran for 20k miles before grenading a valve through the piston.

I'm pretty impressed.

Loving my 450RL

https://preview.redd.it/tjeyewz0xssd1.jpg?width=934&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df7d715a831e3cb2f345a7e01935d939a2f1171f

I picked up a 2023 CRF 450RL a few weeks ago as my first dual sport and second motorcycle overall. Coming from an SV650, it was a big adjustment even on the pavement. I ride it every day for a highway commute to/from work, and during the week I hit up a dirt lot by my house to drill on slow-speed control. Out here our riding areas are all various types of sand, and the learning curve has been pretty steep. Luckily sand is easy on the bike (and me) when I dump it. Today was my third "dual-sport" ride, and some stuff was starting to click; I was able to keep cool(ish) and let the bike do its thing when the sand got loose. Overall I'm happy I went with a 450 instead of an ADV or even a 690. This bike will be a riot once I get my skills up, and until then it's a lot easier to lift 🤣

need tips for loading and unloading from hitch rack

hey folks, I just recently got a license and have been learning to ride. I have a honda CRF300L, which is far from a "heavy bike." still, it's over 300lb with fuel, and I'm struggling to feel confident and safe loading and unloading it from a hitch rack. Like it genuinely unnerves me- I can feel my heart race and my hands get shaky. I am hauling it on a 2000 Tundra, and the bed/hitch sit quite high.

I would love to get a step ramp, but I'm imagining I'll face the same difficulty with that- the incline is steep, and I can't push the bike up unpowered.

the issue I'm having is that the 300L does not have sufficient torque to just climb up in 1st gear by feathering clutch alone, no matter how hard i try to push. and trying to do something as delicate and precise as feather the clutch AND maintain a small amount of throttle while awkwardly trying to support the bike up the ramp is rough... and I'm not all that tall, so I'm reaching up as I'm pushing this thing. I've had some messy incidents where clutch slips, or bike stalls midway, accidentally giving it a ton of throttle when balance gets too far and I'm struggling to hold it upright without making sudden changes to clutch or throttle inputs with the handlebars nearly level with the top of my head.

what do I do here? I'm thinking maybe the answer is I just need a longer ramp to reduce the incline for loading.

as for unloading, getting it to rock out of the cradle formed by the rods that hold the wheels in place is really a struggle, but it is doable without power. but it's also scary because I have to sorta rock the bike a few times as hard as I can muster, and then it goes rolling out very quickly and I'm awkwardly trying to shuffle forward with it while slowing it down without dumping it.

I've been loading and unloading in 1st gear. during unloading, I leave engine off and use clutch to regulate speed/stop the bike on the down ramp since the lever is easier to reach (bike faces left side of truck so clutch is towards me).

Mammoth Lakes bike recommendations

Howdy y’all! Harley guy getting into the dual sport world and hoping for some advice. Currently trying to decide between snagging either a DR650 or a DRZ400 for riding up in the mammoth lakes, CA area.

Does anyone have experience on the trails up there that can give some insight into how a DR650 would perform? I’m leaning more towards the 650 because of the highway capabilities and if I wanted I could get out and go far on. Who knows, maybe I’ll tackle a BDR at some point.

My main goal is to ride local dirt trails though, so while it’s cool that the 650 is highway capable I don’t want to lose too much off road performance for the option to ride highway.

So my hesitation is how capable will it be on trails up there? Will I be having a bad time on a heavier bike like that and better off with the 400? I haven’t ridden the trails in the area so I don’t have a frame of reference for how the two bikes would perform.

Trying to decide what makes the most sense here. Thanks!

Rear-box for Doordash?

Hi all,

I am looking to add a box to my rear rack for doordash deliveries on my DRZ 400s. I've seen quite a few box setups. Does anyone know if there is a budget friendly box that can be removed easily for when I want to get offroad with the bike too? Maybe something with a rotomount? Here is the rear rack I just purchased. If you have a good setup already, please drop a pic below. TIA
