Setting Sag with Aftermarket Exhaust

The manual says that to adjust the rear suspension sag you need to remove the muffler. Presumably it’s so you can get to the lock and adjusting rings.

Is there enough clearance with an aftermarket muffler that I don’t have to take it off?

E Start kit

Panthera Motorsports has finally released their E-Start kit for the 650R. This kit is the most complete and cheapest kit of the 3 currently available. $1285 without batteries and $1585 with.

Rear shock lower mounting holes

Just got an awesome deal on a 2000 yesterday. Previous owner had it lowered with a lowering link. I put the stock link back on today and noticed it was still looking pretty low compared to the front (front is right at the cap on the triple clamp). He had it set on the furthest back of the 3 shock mounting holes. I assumed the lowest one would give it the right height but I can’t seem to get it to line up. Anyone know where it should be for a stock setup?

My 2000 XR :)

Thinking about installing a Mikuni carb, is it really so much better than the stock carb?

XR650R Stock Ground Locations

Hello all, I recently bought a 06 xr650r that runs very good but has some rats nest wiring from the previous owner. I’m cleaning up all the wiring and trying to return it to stock but I can’t seem to find any info on if there is anything grounded to the frame on the bike. Is it all floated grounds? Also after working on the electrical I can’t get the bike started it will backfire and has spark but will not fire. TIA

Post project operating problem

Info:

-I’ve installed a k&n filter that’s %100 sealed using silicone gasket maker so it breathes through the filter material exclusively. (Runs a tad bit better with the side panel off.

-installed a stock crf450r exhaust with a custom link. After it had a non compatible slip on that did’nt seal on my header.

-new spark plug as the old one was very fouled and black since it used to run only on choke

Symptoms:

*It idles now after tinkering with idle and air screw but seems to be very restricted on mid to high range and kinda un-ridable…

*Only starts on choke hot or cold

*cuts off when stopping

I guess it still has the stock jetting as i bought it used

What changes shall i make and what seems to be the problem?

Just bought 2000 XR400R: looking to make it street legal

Any reccommendations for kits?

I've seen a few of the older posts for this bike, but they're +5 years old and the links for wiring kits don’t work anymore.

Top End Rebuild

My XR is going through a lot of oil. It leaks a bit out of the shifter shaft, but not enough to account for half a quart in 60 miles. So I’m thinking I need a new top end. My understanding is that the bottom end is pretty robust so I’m hoping to do the top end only.

I bought the bike with supposedly a rebuilt engine, so maybe rings never seated right? Anyway, I’m expecting to do more. Assuming it was rebuilt previously, what’s the process? Did they bore the liner over? Is there room for a second rebore, or is putting in a new liner a home-possible job?

Also, if I’m getting into the transmission case to do the shifter shaft, how much more work is it to redo the bottom end?

Trustworthy So Cal Mechanic/Shop

I have a plated XR650R that has been sitting at my parent's house for the past 5+ years. The last time I rode it I'm relatively sure I blew the top end towards the back of Divide Peak - I expect it needs a top end rebuild at a minimum. The clutch cover was also broken the same night so I assume I'll need to replace that and likely the clutch internals. I'd also want to replace the dual sport kit (lighting, wiring, etc.) that the previous owner installed.

I'm looking for a trustworthy mechanic/shop familiar with XR650 builds, ideally Baja setups. I'm located around LA (near the Ventura / LA county border) and the bike is currently located in the Santa Barbara area.

Barn find XR650R

Hey guys, I just bought a 2006 XR650 from my neighbor. It was caked in dust and the gas smelled horid so I figured it wasn’t much. After cleaning all the dust off I noticed that the bike still has all the factory paint markings on the bolts. There’s no tool marks on any of the bolts even the chain adjustment bolts, barely any scratches on the side covers etc. I gave him a call and he told me he only ever took it out for one two day trip out in the desert when he first bought it, then parked it in the barn.

The bike has literally 42 miles on it. It’s cleaned up beautifully. I’ve changed all the fluids, put a new chain/sprockets on, new spark plug. After a couple hours of desperately kicking starting it, and sweating through my shirt I figured out how to actually start it and she runs great.

Curious to how much the bike is worth as it sits? Everything is factory except the chain. It’s dark out now but I’ll post some pictures tomorrow morning once I finish detailing it.

There is a website called Bikefinder.com it lists dirtbikes for sale on Craigslist in the U.S. it's a great way to find your next Big Red Pig. There mostly in the south west. This is my 1st reddit post. You filthy animals and gentle folk alike. I'm not affiliated. Only a big Red Pig fan myself.

Ground location?

I have a dual sport kit with a aftermarket stator on my bike (I’m pretty sure it’s an old Dakar kit from electrosport), it’s been on the fritz for the last few months and nothing of my handlebar controls except my kill switch work.I’m suspecting a bad ground as my headlight still works but it’s weak. The bike runs awesome and I haven’t had any problems starting it or anything like that. Is there factory location of a ground wire? If not where might be a common place on a after market kit? I’m having trouble finding anything online. I know this is a long shot. Thanks in advance
