Footpeg Mounts

Footpeg got kinda loose, I’ve never had them off so whoever worked on it last used the cross thread loctite method so there were no threads left on the bolt or the mount when I backed them out. Should I drill out and tap oversize, or should I throw a helicoil in it?

Valve Shim sizing

Have been putting off checking valve clearances on my ‘23 KLR But a drizzly day (and guilt) inspired me to tackle it today. Pretty basic job apart from getting the cylinder head cover off….good grief!! Bike has done 23,500 kilometers, so close to recommended time for this.

I kind of need some help to to figure out what new shims to order…..

My smallest feeler gauge is .04mm and it wouldn’t fit under the right hand cam. And the left one was a bit tight…so maybe count them both as .03?? This is my first time setting valve clearances using shims……Any help most appreciated

Heated grips - wher eto run wires at handlebars?

Just put on Oxford heated grips. Putting controller on throttle side. Where do you run the wiring from clutch side grip without it getting pinched or otherwise caught?

I can't seem to find a video that shows this in any detail. Any help is appreciated.

Tusk pannier replacement locks

Hey folks, I bought a KLR recently that basically had all the fixings. Only real downside is I have a single key for all four locks on the V1 Tusk aluminum pannier boxes.

Looking around, most trustworthy shops don't have the V1 locks in stock, but plenty of V2. Anyone know if these are common locks that can be found elsewhere? Or if the V2 locks just work outright?

My turn signal’s idiot light stayed on (really dim) on the off position yesterday. It rained the night before. Could it be a short in the control switch?

Engine cutting out mid ride

Hi there,

I was riding today on my klr650 that I’ve had for about a month or so. I’ve had no issues thus far however today i was riding along and had been going for about 25 mins when the engine started cutting in and out of power and then eventually stalled. It started back up again after but didn’t make it very far.

Around 10 hours later I was able to drive it again for around 25 mins before it cut out in the exact same way.

It was a rainy humid sort of day and was wondering if the rain could be an issue? Otherwise I will be opening up the carb and checking sparkplugs. Is there anything else I should be aware of.

Also the bike has done about 65000kms and has done a lap through centre of aus before I bought it. Gen2 2016 model

Thanks so much, loving the community it’s so helpful

Preventing tank rust

I've never had a bike with a metal tank. My KLR will be stored for the winter. I am lucky to have ethanol-free gas available here. I was thinking I'd put some pre-mix (with 2-stroke oil) fuel in my tank and ride off-road to slosh it around and that oil would coat the inside of the tank and keep it from rusting while the bike sits (in my garage) for 5? months. I know it can't hurt. And I love the smell of Klotz. :-)
Is that a valid idea? Or is there a better way?

Im having the fork seals replaced on my 2022

Hi all, i'm a motorcycle novice, I came outside and noticed an oil stain on the ground and oil on the front tire/forks of my bike. I googled it and the fork seals are apparently bad. I called some shops and can get it done for a few hundred bucks. My question is that i've read some "KLR upgrades" online and one this is a front fork brace and progressive fork springs... my question is, when they redo the fork seals is the fork springs something they could easily replace at that time? If its something that would add a bunch of cost then I dont want to worry about it but if it would be easily done then I would probably do that upgrade. I dont want to ask the shop and sound like a total noob and then possibly receive a higher quote than someone who is obviously knowledgeable would.

How much oil should my bike burn?

I recently completed a 10,000 km trip across Canada on my 2002 KLR 650 with 60,000 kms, going from Ottawa to Victoria and back. I went through about 3 liters of oil overall. For most of the trip, I kept my speed around 100-110 km/h (4,500-4,900 RPM), but in the last stretch, I cranked it up to 120-130 km/h (5,000-5,500 RPM), and was burning around a liter of oil doing 600 - 800kms a day. Is this kind of oil consumption normal, or should I look into a top-end rebuild over the winter? Also, if anyone knows of a good, affordable rebuild kit, I’d appreciate the recommendation!

Gas Puking Out Mystery Tube

My bike will barely run without gunning it and now I see that raw gas is steadily running out a rubber tube onto the ground.

I’m thinking clogged carb and therefore venting overflow fuel?

How do you run wires back to the battery? (2023 KLR650)

I got Oxford Heaterz. Wiring is direct to battery. Where the back of the tank bolts down all the wires run under. But, there is no more room there. It's jammed tight. I don't want to do any surgery here. Am I going about this wrong?

Anyone have a video link clearly showing the routing of wires there?
