iPhone 14 Pro Max just started…

I've noticed my iPhone's performance and photo quality seem to be on a downward trend. It's frustrating how “older” models often experience this 'downgrade' effect with each new iOS update, photos/performance in general… Apple shouldn’t downgrade performance I know the reason they want you to get a new f* iPhone just wanted to share

Thanks for nothing AppleCare

I have AppleCare+ and today my back glass shattered and I keep hurting myself when I hold my phone. I contacted Apple about my options since I don’t live near a repair location and they said to send it in its $1,047 despite having AppleCare+. They say it’s a temp hold for 10 business days but I don’t have that kind of money. I got the plan so I could avoid spending that much since I just don’t have $1K readily available. What’s the point of insurance if they’re just gonna charge you the full cost of the phone anyway?

diff regions, diff models?

Someone please help understand why an IPhone bought in a different country but have extended coverage/protection plan in Canada can’t be repaired and only can be replaced? they are saying the devices r build differently in diff regions hence would require diff parts.

Thanks

Moaning about quality of posts

Any meme or post that gets made here, I see the iC...I mean uh, "normal users who don't care but are here to tell you regardless, about how it doesn't matter", suddenly show up in comment sections. Mentioning how "this sub talks wayyy too much" about this. Yeah that tends to happen. You tend to find people talking negatively and posting negatively in a sub called...what's it called? Oh yeah, "applesucks". Logic and all. Just like how you'd find, say, people who dislike nfl if there was a group called "nflsucks". Just an example but hopefully this simple logic is clear. And you can simply ignore this group too, you know that, right? Funny thing about all these people is they write these sometimes multi-paragraph posts about how much energy the OP is putting into 'hating apple', failing to catch the irony in what they just did. Thankfully a lot of the people who upvote the memes and pictures posted here do not even engage in the thread and leave it to that...brigade to be a good boy and explain it away, incessantly talk about how "I wish there was constructive posts". Well, let me introduce you to a feature of reddit called unjoin. I mean, moaning about that won't change the group or the nature of the posts, right?

For Gamers: How Do You Want Mac to Improve for Gaming?

Would you want to see improved compatibility, an Apple Console similar to the Steam Deck, a gaming Mac with a powerful dedicated GPU, maybe a cloud streaming service from Apple? Tell me what you'd like.

For non-gamers, we know that not everyone cares about games on their computers, and that's perfectly fine. No need to comment on this one.

Seriously thinking of jumping off the Apple ship after many years. Two main reasons: do others encounter this or am I missing something?

Some background here. First, unlike I'm sure almost everyone in this sub, I'm old (very) and technologically backward. As in, still carrying a flip phone around. (I might get a smartphone some day, but never an iPhone.)

Our home computer has been a Mac mini for years, going on for decades; the present one, our second, dates from 2011. As you'll imagine, I'm looking at a replacement. Last time we replaced, it wasn't really a big question what we'd do; I liked the reliability, the longevity, the relative freedom from worries about viruses and malware.

But this time, I'm very seriously considering switching to a PC. Two big reasons. At least they are big reasons in my mind, but the Apple communities seem not to even acknowledge them, which is why I'm coming here to ask, Am I nuts? Or are these genuine issues that other people encounter? (Not that the two propositions are mutually exclusive, of course.)

First is the file management interface. (Begging your pardon if my terminology isn't precise.) I love how simple it is to move, copy, and rename files on my Windows computer at work. Nested folders! Open two windows at a time if you want to and drag a file from one to another! What could be more intuitive? So why in the hell after all these years are these simple operations so complicated on a Mac?

Second--and if anything this is an even bigger deal--is the way Apple supports, or more accurately doesn't, USB ports. We use a wired keyboard and mouse, and at least once a week have to switch the plug because the port just stops working. Not to mention when we've got a flash drive plugged in and suddenly it disappears and we get the little popup that our device wasn't properly ejected. Excuse me, but I don't think I should have to lose work and rethink my whole approach to storing information because Apple's designers think USB ports aren't cool so why should they provide enough of them or supply them with adequate power? Of course there are all kinds of complicated (and at best temporary) fixes for when Mac USB ports stop working. How about just designing the damn computer so they don't stop working all the time?

So that's where my thinking is right now. I know, given what sub I'm posting on, I'm kind of ranting to the choir, but these problems as I say are so utterly ignored in the Apple Universe that I just need a reality check.

__________

Update: Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond. (Well, at least to the great majority of you. There are a few to whom I'd say, Did you know it's possible to disagree or even correct somebody's mistakes without coming across as a jerk? But I don't know that those few are all that interested in the not-coming-across-as-a-jerk thing.)

About the USB port problem, I was clearly on the wrong track. I will say, and I probably should have clarified this at the start, that this issue has been going on for years, which is why I didn't think it was just our computer getting old. But it does sound as if it's not a Mac-related problem but something peculiar to this particular machine. So at this point I'm not thinking By God, I'm switching to Windows because Apple sucks at USB ports, get off my lawn, hold on let me get this damn onion tied tighter on my belt! I am, though, thinking, well, Windows might still have the advantage because I can get a PC with a bunch more ports than a Mac mini has, and it won't be as expensive a fix if one of them goes wonky in the future.

Several of you gave me some useful pointers about file management on the Mac. I'll try some of those ideas and see if they get me feeling a little less jaded about the whole thing. It does still seem much more intuitive in Windows -- but that could be a matter of personal style and how my mind works (to the extent that it does).

There's been some mention of Linux in the comments. I once worked with a guy who was really into Linux and encouraged my interest. I looked into it, but found it pretty intimidating. But that was fifteen or twenty years ago; I'm sure Linux interfaces have changed in that time.

This has been an interesting read. Thanks, again, for all the thoughts and viewpoints you've all brought into the discussion.

Apple personalization and files suck

Gotta blow off some steam here as I have yet another day of difficulty with file types and settings I just changed but didn't stick.

I had to change back to an iPhone this year for work so that I could send and receive pictures and videos with people. I've always adapted to new phones and computers once I get used to them but there is so much stuff I keep finding on iPhone that bugs me to no end and is not editable via settings.

Android ideology is "let's give you access to everything so you can set it how you want." Apple's is "we know what you want so we're going to streamline it for you and if you don't like it, sucks to suck."

  1. Pictures and videos - The super high contrast HDR videos completely negate screen brightness. Why even offer "brightness" settings if the video plays on full blast anyway? Part of this may be on Instagram's side but regardless, never noticed it til iPhone.

  2. HEIC files - I have to upload pictures to a website but it doesn't accept HEIC. I change the settings to JPEG and retake the pics. Send it to my Mac via Messages. The picture is now HEIC again.... So I go to convert the filetype in Photos but right-click doesn't give any file management options. Because why would they.

  3. File Management on Mac - Anybody use Icons view in finder? You know, the one there all your files stack on top of each other and when you hit "clean up selection" they find whichever space is nearest, regardless of optimization like filling the top-left corner or alphabetizing? Ah, you prefer Column view, fair (credit where it's due, Column view is nice.) Oh you want to arrange files by file size? Too bad, that's only available in List view.

  4. Folders - you're looking for your Documents folder? We hid that. Library? Hid that too.

  5. Setting alarms on iPhone - So you have a timer for 30 mins and a timer for 1 hour on the app. You add a timer for 45 minutes. So naturally we're going to place it...... that's right, at the very top. Not nicely in between the other timers to create a navigable range. Oh, and when you start a timer, we're not going to give you ANY type of visual or tactile feedback that you pressed the start button. Scroll back up to the top and check if you're that worried about it.

  6. How could I forget.... THE IOS KEYBOARD!! Holy cow I miss Gboard on Android. Best I've found on iOS is Microsoft's SwiftKey.

For more reading, also see: CarPlay, FaceTime, app runtime management, never-ending updates, notification sounds even when on silence and focus (omg I just found the source of my rogue notification bell on the proofread!!!), multiple non-merged address books, headphone jacks.

Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

"If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it"

I just stumumbled again upon this picture and it kind of reminded me one of the most used excuses why Apple keeps its software stagnant and MacOs UI has not been through of evolution of modernization for two decades.

What will do Apple in response of the new battery law issued by EU?

EU recently issued that by 2027 every phone should come with a removable battery. I was wondering what will Apple do, because it was the first company to introduce phones with sealed batteries and also because they will no longer get any profit from over-expensive battery repairs. Lmao Im wondering if Apple will do a dirty trick in order to avoid this law. What u guys think?

IOS is worse than KindleOS

Wow. And here I thought an iPhone was some kind of upgrade. Not at all.

After 10 yrs of Android a family member got tired of me not having blue texts or some such thing and sent me an iPhone plus for my birthday.

We've had a bunch of iPads, along with maybe a dozen Android and Kindle/Fire tablets. Plus a variety of Android phones.

This thing is one of the least intuitive tech devices in years! Let's enumerate the ways:

1- The top swipe down mini settings menu is extremely limited and looks about like the swipe up iPad menu looked like 10+ years ago. The Fire swipe down menu is better than that!

2- The settings app is AWFUL. Unintuitive, scroll intensive, whack a mole guessing where to find what.

3-No landscape mode for the OS screens - seriously? Because of Face ID? What a lame cop out. Apple has always put their idea of style over accessibility and usability for the actual people using the device. Same thing here. They even force people not using Face ID to stay in portrait mode for their home screens. It's definitely an Apple attitude kind of thing and not a technical thing.

4- Many apps don't respect large fonts. Android has way better accessibility for big fonts inside of browsers, etc. IOS forces the apps to use the general font setting, and even when it's set super big, the app may just ignore it, leaving you grabbing for you glasses if you need them otherwise. Lame.

5-So so so dev unfriendly. Anybody used to having control over their apps, deleting cache, being able to SEE the cache, whatever - all of it is locked down in the IOS "we're doing this for your own good" ecosystem. Lame lame lame.

6- The near deal killer for me: no images in web messages. In fact, no web messages at all! You can get "Phone Link" for Windows, and for your trouble get access to a super crappy slimmed down version of Google's Web Messages - sans photos. None. And also it won't show messages you've already seen on your phone. Something about security. Great! I rely on web messages all throughout the day, so this is truly a super sucky issue that makes me want to trade this phone in.

I'm sure I could go on all day here. But WTF makes this thing worth $1000 when I can spend a couple of hundred to get a 6.8 inch Android phone on Amazon and throw an extra 256G memory card in there for peanuts? Oh yeah, Apple doesn't take those either.

So just as my $150 buck Fire Max 11 is better than my kids' $450-$600 9th and 10th gen iPads, getting an Android phone for like $300 would be better than this iPhone (14 plus).

The only thing you have ZERO access to as an Android use is making Facetime calls. So if everybody in your family has Apple, unless you want to lug your iPad around and have wifi to connect to or actually pay for cell service on the iPad - you are locked out of anything but hopping on other people's Facetime calls from an Android or Windows device. And Apple knows this, so they aren't about to make any changes there. I wonder how many people are forced to use their vastly inferior OS just because they want Facetime.
