The Wasps Reddit
Wasp - any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor an ant. Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it or parasitizes it, making wasps critically important in natural control of their numbers, or natural biocontrol. Parasitic wasps are increasingly used in agricultural pest control as they prey mostly on pest insects and have little impact on crops. Wikipedia: Wasp

Hi, today looking on my balcony I found this. I was thinking of removing it from the top with a broom. I wanted to ask you how I can remove it and what to do with the wasps
A wasp got trapped between my window and screen through a fairly large hole. However, she can't seem to find her way out :( I am deathly afraid of wasps but I don't want to kill her. How do I help her find the hole again? Its been 3 days.
Update: She's free! ๐ฅณ๐ช ๐๐ฅ๐๐
people think wasps are stupid they are not! without them are ecosystem would die wasps are a predator so they kill their prey. Also they sting to protect their nest. i love wasps they are amazing. if you see a wasp don't kill it, leave it get out of the area by it's self.
i saw two wasps wrestling on the ground and thought they were mating but they were definitely fighting because their abdomens were in the air. they seemed to have been fighting for a while in the dirt when i spotted them and continued for a good 30 seconds but then they just both flew away. in opposite directions. i looked it up and wasps do fight but almost always to the death and the looser gets decapitated. the only exception i saw was for parasitic wasps but these guys were definitely the same species. can anyone tell my why they might have fought and why they would just give up??
I have a small bird feeder outside my window and as I was filling it up today I noticed one yellow jacket and a tiny little nest. He must have just started making the nest because it wasnโt there last week. Itโs on the inside of the bird feeder and Iโm not sure how to dispose of it. Will the birds take care of it on their own since their food is in it? It seems like itโs only one yellow jacket.
Does anyone know the world's LARGEST wasp species that is NOT a hornet? I'd like to know!
This rude fellow flew into my van window and either bit or stung me. Happened in central/eastern MA. Anyone know what it is or if i should be concerned?
I have a killer phobia of wasps. I need help to get rid of it
Found this on my curtains and have no idea how it got into the house. We did have wasps last year that would get into the house one at a time. Trying to figure out if this is an isolated issue or I should call pest control.
i just moved into my apartment in on the top floor with a balcony and over hang. those little fkers are everywhere! i knocked down all the previous nests that were up before they started coming out. iโve tried different things to deter them. (ex: peppermint essential oil, spray bottle w/ apple cider vinegar, dish soap and same essential oil) i spray them and they go away for about 5 minutes and then theyโre back again. what is the best wasp trap i can get for them. i just want to enjoy my balcony without fear๐ญ๐ญ
Y'all know those "jack spaniard ""jep"" wasps"? (Polistes annularis)? I noticed they only exist in rural areas. Is that true?
Idk if this is an old one or being built
There's this wasp that has been coming to my balcony for the past two days. I'm not sure if it's a queen or not since I couldn't really look at its body. But it's possible that it's a queen since spring started a few days ago, and it's not small enough. The wasp been checking up my dry walls for two days, at random times. Should I be worried about it building a nest in my balcony or in the neighborhood? and if so, how can I prevent it? thanks for any comment in advance
Found this guy in my bathroom. Gently trapped it in a plastic container and released outside, after taking some quick photos.
I think it's a European paper wasp, but my photos weren't quite detailed enough for me to use any wasp species keys online. Maybe someone here is more certain and can confirm, or suggest a better fit?
I'm scared of wasps, and want to know what to expect if I find another one inside. Thanks for your help!
Which specific species is also considered the most dangerous?
So recently moved to a new place, wooded areas in my backyard and such. And there are wasps everywhere. Had a guy come and spray around the house but I live on 2 acres and 14 acres of woods in my backyard and I still see them. Today I opened my mailbox and saw a wasp starting a nest inside of it (it was just one wasp and the start of a nest). What can I do to deter them away from our property or even better, get rid of them. Thank you
Every year, for 5 or 6 years now, I've been in the company of a lone wasp who always hangs out at my house. Now I know that it's never the same wasp every year because they don't live that long, but I always thought it peculiar how all these wasps have taken on an identical set of characteristics and behavior, as if its always the same wasp. Because of this, i just humorously consider it the same wasp everytime. I've just kinda called it my roommate/pet, though I never named her yet (don't know if she's a girl, just always assumed it that way).
I always thought she was odd because, I very rarely ever see her fly. She's got wings, but she never uses them, she's just walking around the floor of my kitchen right now. She never bothers me, never aggressive. If I had ANY guess as to why she keeps coming back, it's because of the tiny unfinished wasp nest in the crevice of my outside balcony door. There were a couple years where it seemed she never left the nest, just hung on it every day. I always assumed she was building a nest there, or to start a colony, but she never builds it any bigger, it's always the same size.
What can explain this behavior? Why doesn't she ever fly? Why doesn't she ever start a colony? Why does she keep coming back just to never leave and instead walk around my house all day? I don't have anything against her, she's welcomed hang out, but I'm just reaching out because it's been the same thing every year now and I'm curious.
