Anyone have any clue why my male rainbow stag kicks his two back legs up? He can move them just fine, is he okay?
I got my grub yesterday and heard weird noises coming from its container, just to find it at the bottom of the substrate with scratch marks all over the plastic like it’s been trying to chew its way out?????? is it unhappy or is it just stupid? and is there any way for me to make it stop??
Im pretty sure the mealworm subreddit is dead so I’ll ask here. I had a 25 gallon laying around and I’ve got a leopard gecko(in a sixty not the 25) and so I kinda chucked all my mealworms and beetles(about 300 of them together) in it with about four inches of organic topsoil that I add water to every two days(low humidity and high heat here) there is confirmed springtails in the soil. They’ve got sticks and hiding stuff and more toilet paper rolls than I think is necessary lol. They are breeding like crazy and very active but I was wondering if the breeding would be successful? They’ve been in there for maybe a month and I believe the time it takes to hatch is a bit over that and even then won’t be able to see them very well. What can I do to raise the hatch rates if anything?
Or do they need separating? I brought some beetles the other month I was told they would reproduce the moment they meet but it’s been like 2 months and half the beetles are dead(old age) and no larvae have appeared. I’m beginning to think I’ve only made it suitable for beetles to live and not for them to breed and their larvae to grow. Do beetles and larvae need completely different care? I did my research and believe I knew what I was doing but there’s not a lot out there and I think I’ve made a mistake. Could someone point me in the right direction to a proper larvae care guide? Thank you
I just ordered a rainbow stag beetle that’s meant to be l2/l3 but it looks pretty small, however i’ve never owned beetles before so im not sure how big it should be. It’s only about an inch big, i would send a pic but im trying not to handle it much to avoid stress since i just got it all set up.
So I’m fairly new to the game but my beetle is finally a female stag! She emerged about two weeks ago but she isn’t eating
She’s got a heating pad on the side of her tank to kind of keep the entire area somewhat warm and not overdo it but she’s constantly buried and I’m worried she hasn’t eaten this entire time
I know their organs need to fully form/develop but I wasn’t sure how long? Sorry I’m super new and just want to make sure I’m doing it all correctly. I’m not breeding her
I make sure everything is moist and not wet as well
They're quite small btw
I live in Australia and i've been wanting to buy some beetles to take care of because they seem cool to own and look pretty easy to take care for. Im currently overseas but would probably buy one or two when i come back after a little more research. My dad says he has a spare tank somewhere that is 60x60x60cm and a couple of others which he doesn't know the sizes. Im thinking of buying some rainbow beetles but ive been wondering if the tank is too big for them? I am thinking of buying 2 just because if they do breed in the future it could make me do another hobby. I know that for rainbow beetles they need to have flaky soil. Also i am aware that the stages before becoming an adult takes a while. So here are the main questions i have.
Where can i buy the substrates, beetles larva, and all of the needed things for a tank.
How often do you have to change the substrate and do i need to change it?
How much fun are raising beetles from the larvae to adult? Are there other beetles taht you would recommend to take care of because they are simply for fun to care for> The beetles have interested me for a while now but i am still open to more options for another small creature.
what are the necessities for when creating a tank, and can i try make the tank look like those cool vivariums people make on youtube?
If there is anything i have missed in here and that you think will be important please tell me if you are bothered to, i havent taken care of a small creature or made a tank before so this should be a fun experience and good use of the money i have.
These are the main questions that i have that popped up at the top of my head as i made this and i hope some of you can answer as well as add any information that i can use. Thank you in advance and i hope you have a great day.
I’ve recently bought 2 Japanese rhino beetle larva, and they came in a small 500ml pot, I put them in a new box with 2/3 new substrate but it’s still not enough space. How long do I have to wait before I can add more substrate?
hi - my grub's substrate is getting kinda moldy.
in the millipede community, the answer to moldy substrate is springtails. are they safe to keep with a grub? any other mold prevention techniques?
thank you!!
This is my first ever time owning a beetle so sorry if this is a dumb question 😅. Is he ok under the dirt I know they like to dig but I’m kinda worried about him being able to find his way out. He’s under like 4 inches of dirt and I just wanna be sure that he’s not stuck.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with him? i pick him up and put him upright every single time but he keeps flipping upside down
I've been looking for a giant flower beetle specimen in violet or blue lately, but have had no luck. I have found some shops selling the larve, however I am not equipped to care for a beetle properly and it would feel wrong for me to raise it with the soul purpose for it be pinned once it dies. I have had a hard time trying to find shops that aren't wholesale and aren't selling live beetles. If anyone has any shops that may have some, I would greatly appreciate it!
Finally found a huge ox beetle today. They're pretty rare here and I've had my eye out for about three years now!
I have never owned a beetle before but I am really interested in keeping it. Can someone help me out and give me as much info as possible about taking care of it? Or direct me somewhere where I can learn more? Keep in mind I know literally nothing about caring for insects so I'll need all the detail I can get! Minimim tank size, what to fill it with, what kind of food it needs, etc. etc.
I have no problem putting the effort into caring for it in the case that its not a beginner friendly species, but if someone advises against keeping it I'm open to releasing.
This lil fella surfaced ca 8 days ago, got them as larvae. He, and a female that hatches shortly after him, are right now trying to open their wings like it seems? Why do they do this now? Any experts here? Also i think the wings of the specimen showed here are damaged/underdeveloped. Could anything during pupation have gone wrong with him to cause that?
So I have fallen in love with beetles and have decided to grow my own collection, now I only have 3 species and I’m wondering if anyone here knows where I can buy some more? I know of Richard inverts who has my dream collection but so many of his beetles are always out of stock. Does anyone know of anywhere else? Thank you.
