How far can Elephant Beetles fly and how good are they at getting to safe areas?

I found an elephant beetle on the balcony of a resort in Mexico, I let him go in a patch of trees and soil but he’s next to a few roads, a fence, and trees since I couldn’t directly access any jungle area to put him in. I didn’t see him smushed or anything the next day and really hope he’s okay!

How good at flying around and covering ground are they? I tried to give him the best chance to be safe that I could but still am worried! He was the biggest and most beautiful beetle I’ve ever seen and I was so lucky to find him!

Weird flake soil

Hi! So around a few months ago u made two batches of flake soil, the Color of the soil did not change so I gave up and left it there for a month, no storing. But then the Color changed when I went to see it today but it didn’t have an earthy smell… it smelled like nothing to a little metallic.. could just be me smelling weird stuff since my mom told me it smelled like yeast 🫠

But there was also flies, like fruit flies in both flake soil buckets from a little air gap. So how do I get rid of the flies? Do I just bake the flake soil? Well all I know if if fly larvae are thriving in it I should be able to raise beetles and millipedes in it 😭

questions about raising beetles

i want to try raising stag beetles eventually, so i’ve been doing a bit of research and i still have a few questions.

i’m considering getting an adult rainbow stag beetle (phalacrognathus muelleri) but i’m not sure what size enclosure it would need. i can only ever find specific sizes for breeding them, which i don’t want to do. what would be considered the minimum size of the enclosure for raising a single adult?

i’ve also seen that they need specific temperatures and i’m curious about how i’d maintain a consistent temperature for it. would i just use some sort of heat lamp? or is there some type of heating pad i could place somewhere to heat up the enclosure?

sorry if these seem like silly questions, i’m just trying to make sure i have everything ready for when i decide i’m ready to begin raising a beetle haha. any advice or input is greatly appreciated ❤️

ID request, found in South FL

Apologies for the video, this was sent to me by a friend. The only distinctive features I can see are a possibly black or brown shiny coloration and what looks like a grey spot on the butt of its abdomen.

Hoe to identify golden tortoise beetle

Hi, i live in Mexico and i saw what i think is a golden tortoise beetle. It flew away before i could take a pic but I'm sticking around the area to see if I'll catch a glimpse of the little fellow again. It had some black spots, which makes me unsure, but i honestly cannot be at peace until i know. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

larva digging on surface?

I have a rainbow stag beetle larva around l2/3 that I got about a week or two ago and recently it has become more active; there’s tunnels all along the walls of the container like it’s been digging all day, as well as tracks on the surface like it was digging along the top. I’ve heard resurfacing is a sign they’re unhappy with their substrate, but I haven’t actually seen it rest at all on the surface… should I be concerned, and if so, what should I do to help? Also is this level of activity normal?

Dynastes hercules

I got a few L1 grubs, but I am not sure which substrate to get for them. I live in Southern California, so I do not know of a good recipe for their substrate yet! But any help on their substrate and temperature would be appreciated; thank you for your time as well!

Keeping rainbow stag larva?

Hello I have been interested in rainbow stags (I’m just in the research phase, haven’t made any plans to buy one yet), but I’m super intimidated by the larval stage. It seems that they are sensitive and the larval stage lasts for such a long time!

I’ve seen some people who have purchased from David’s Beetles and the larva come in a container with flake soil that should last about a week. Do you keep them in that container until after pupation or should you be upgrading them to larger containers as they grow? This is more geared towards someone who has bought from David’s before, since I don’t have dimension of the container or anything like that.

How often do you change the flake soil? I see that you are supposed to leave some of the old flake soil in there and you mix in the fresh stuff.

How hard is it to raise a larva to adulthood? Ideally I’d like to get a L3 larva but that might not always be available, and I’m not used to having a pet that requires so much solitude. How often do you check on them or check the soil moisture? How do you know if they’re ok if they’re typically going to be underground? What are clear signs that something has gone wrong?

Like I said, I’m just feeling things out and would like to hear from some beetle keepers, I don’t have any immediate plans to buy one, just curious! :)

Wanting to keep beetles, but warned never to take them from the wild. Why?

I'm brand new to wanting to keep beetles as pets, and I'm saving up to get all the things they need to be happy. I often come across DON'T TAKE BEETLES FROM THE WILD on a lot of care guides online, but never saw the reason why. Could someone please explain? Thanks!
