About

A subreddit for sharing those miniature epiphanies that make the mundane more amazing.

"Showerthought" is a loose term that applies to the types of thoughts you might have while carrying out a routine task like showering, driving, or daydreaming. At their best, showerthoughts are universally relatable and provide new perspectives on the mundane.

Please be respectful of others' submissions. Rudeness is unacceptable.

Please read our rules and the requirements for each type of post before submitting.

Rules

  • 1. All submissions must be original.
Everything offered in /r/Showerthoughts must be written by its poster. AI-generated content, copied-and-pasted content, and other such unoriginal content is strictly forbidden.

  • 2. All posts must meet the minimum requirements for their flair.
Incorrectly flaired posts will be removed. Very few posts will be showerthoughts.

  • 3. Your entire thought must be in the title.
Posts in /r/Showerthoughts must stand on their own. Explanations, elaboration, examples, or clarifications should only be offered as comments.

  • 4. Submissions must be offered in error-free English.
Since posts in /r/Showerthoughts are rarely longer than a sentence, they must meet a minimum standard of quality.

  • 5. No misinformation.

  • 6. No done-to-death or banned posts.
Posts may not be jokes, puns, wordplay, advice, soapboxing, or "shower commentary" (like "Ow, this water is too hot!"). Posts pertaining to politics, religion, Reddit, and social justice are also forbidden, as are posts about or pertaining to language.

  • 7. No spam or spam-enabling activity of any kind.
Spam and spam-enabling activity is strictly prohibited, regardless of how or where on Reddit it takes place. Users may only offer one post per seventy-two-hour period.

  • 8. Remain civil at all times.
Bigotry, hate-speech, harassment, and personal attacks will result in immediate and permanent bans. Submissions which are hostile, intentionally demeaning, or directly insulting will be removed.

Please see the complete rules page for a full explanation of each of the preceding rules.

For some premodern folk, public executions were probably a way of satisfying their morbid curiosity around death in a similar way to what true crime podcasts and murder dramas do for people today.

We have names for Months and Days. But we don't have names for Weeks (either the 52 weeks of a year, nor the roughly 4 weeks each month).

A cop either chooses to enforce all laws no matter how unjust, which makes him a bad person, or chooses to only enforce fair laws, which makes him a bad law enforcer. Either way, he’s a bad cop.

We have gotten to a point in civilization where a house hold pet dog has eaten more exotic meats, has more belongings, and has been treated better, than most humans were only 100 years ago.

If superpowers were real and a person could fly through space, and he flew a few million km away from earth (which is not very much in terms of the solar system), there's a good chance he would *never* find his way back.
