Exceedingly nonsensical or common thoughts will be removed at the discretion of the moderation team, as will thoughts that are poorly written, overly vulgar, or obscene.

This subreddit is moderated for quality, which means we remove content that we deem to be low-quality, low-effort, nonsensical, or common/unoriginal. We do not "let the votes decide." We understand this type of policy is controversial and uncommon (especially for a high-traffic subreddit), but we believe it gives /r/Showerthoughts the best chance at maintaining quality.

Brassica Oleracea (Broccoli, Kale, etc.) is the dog of the domesticated plant world

Okay, so this started after I went down a Wikipedia article trail and learned that Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kale, Brussel Sprouts, Gail Lan, and Collards are all the same freaking species. Not same genus or same family, but same species. So II had a shower thought of oh this plant is the dog of the plant world, a species that is still just one species but we've turned it into completely different looking things. I thought I was clever. Then I decided to Google it and realized that people both smarter and way more knowledgeable about plants already came up with the analogy, wrote papers on it, and made fun pictures to go along with their scientific papers....

Given the combination of electricity and water, it's surprising that washing machines don't kill more people.

There are a lot of books teaching preschoolers how to identify tigers, elephants and giraffes, considering they’ll never encounter one in their local neighbourhood

Just imagine how many serial killers, murderers and criminals are passed through the history without being judged, even unknown in the first era and the medieval times.

Assume that you lived in 2000 B.C, a psychopath broke into your house and brutally murdered you without a spesific reason just like other hundreds of serial killers that we know today because of the internet. We know how those crimes happened and how those murderers got caught or executed because of the organized police and detectives. So what evidence is going to make your murderer caught if there is no witness? They won't be able to check any security cameras, fingerprints, your last phone signal, etc.. If we say that the surveillance cameras are invented in the 1870s, DNA testing in 1984 (which are solid evidences for a crime) just imagine the amount of unknown criminals and wrongly accused people for thousands of years in the hostile human history. jeez

Something might happen that causes you to fall asleep every night, but you don't remember it in the morning

It's hard for me to explain, but it keeps me up at night. Basically, imagine each night before falling asleep, something happens, like a specific feeling of falling asleep, or something weirder, or supernatural, and then you don't remember it happening in the morning.

The odds are still low, but someone may have gotten lucky numbers in a fortune cookie that have matched a winning lottery but didn’t use them

Or they don’t play; as I don’t. Another thought: with how many fortune cookies are out there, and assuming the numbers are normally pseudo-random, many winning lotto numbers might exist in sealed fortune cookies that haven’t been opened yet

Trans women will look better for longer

So long ago I noticed that men while getting older in comparison to woman somehow look better with every year passing 35. Men usually are uglier in the younger ages but slowly starting to look better with age. It's almost completely opposite for women. Of course it's not always the case but this is something I noticed. So if you have a beautiful trans woman in her twenties she will be looking hotter for a longer time.
