A subreddit for simple communication.

Welcome to /r/minlangs!

A minlang (mini-language) is a conlang designed to be simpler. There are also minscripts among conscripts.

Some examples include Lojban (for its few parts of speech and regularity), Toki Pona (for its few words), Vahn, Vötgil, and a growing number of others. Auxlangs also tend to qualify. You can visit this discussion for more about what a minlang is.

Just post things about simplicity and communication!

MǍ¹PÊ⁴K̂¹OV̂³MŌ (Test Language)

https://preview.redd.it/w648ea1itrhb1.png?width=2432&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6c2b50eb0cbff66c0f90fc8551c7b5be4ecada3

Basically how it works, is that words are categorised into groups, and then assigned a number code.

For example: The combination M & A is a singular pronoun, but how do we know which one?

Well this is what the small numbers are for. M¹ is the second person singular pronoun (you)

The small arrows above the letters just show whether the number is positive or negative.

This is in no way complete, and I will likely add and remove some features.

I know it's not the most efficient, so feedback is welcome. This is just the first draft.

(Also this may not be a minlang anymore, but I call it that because of the lack of having an actual vocabulary)

New Idea

I'm thinking of making a language with a small word list, that can still fit a ton of info.

Idk if this is even possible, but I'll update here as I work on it further.

Super Tiny Conlang Idea.

/ʔ/ ’ THINK
/m/ m NOT
/t/ t TRUTH
/k/ k MAKE
/p/ p QUESTION
/ŋ/ ŋ RECIEVE
/ɔ/ o THIS
/i/ i ME
` ` future ( stress marker )

o’otí . toŋíp
Think-truth-me(future) . Truth-recieve-me(future)-question
I think of truth. Will I find it?

I made this tiny conlang, and would like feedback.
I am hoping to keep the word/letter count under 12.

Any suggestions?

Would anyone like to co-create this with me?

Miki Tomi

Minlang - Miki Tomi

(Update - I added 13 new words. 53 will be the final word count. I also added emoji's for each word, which I thinks adds to the simplicity.)

This is a small language I constructed in about two hours. I wanted to take a break from my main project and see how small I can get a language.

Miki Tomi, meaning bright / happy language, is the product.

I’m no professional when it comes to conlangs, but it should at least be somewhat functional. :)

Rules:

  1. Nouns can be used as verbs, or adjectives, and vice versa.

Ex: Air (verb) = to breathe

Ex: Water (verb) = to wash, clean, or wet.

  1. There is no tense. This is left up to context.

Ex: The verb: Create (Mapa), could mean create, created, or creating.

  1. Numbers are made by putting two or more numbers together.

Ex: Di ku = 3, Kelo kelo mip mip ku = 222

  1. The word me (da), can also mean my.

Ex: My death, would be: Da pana.

  1. When saying a yes or no question, put “Po” at the end of the sentence.

Ex: Su tomi po = You talk?

It’s kind of like putting “yes?” or “right? at the end of a sentence.

That’s all I can think of, so yeah. That’s Miki Tomi.

What, in your opinion, makes a minilang?

Is is a small set of phonemes? Is it a simple, regular grammar? Is it a small lexicon? Is it something entirely else?

How long does it take to make a Constructed language?

So I don't want to create a language but rather create a rule set for creating languages in a fantasy game I am running. To feel like I'm doing it properly I just want to know some things about creating languages. My main questions are:

  1. Roughly how long it takes to make a language I mean a full language (written and spoken), not like a cipher. Also how long does it take if the language is only spoken or only written?
  2. How long would it take to learn a language that's wholly original and not based on another?
  3. Would basing the language of a pre-existing one this process faster?
  4. How long does it take to make other uncommon language-like things like ciphers, sign language e.t.c?

Thanks for the help!

pupulim, a conlang written on both sides of an index card

source: https://twitter.com/StephenEscher/status/1353479594641399809

An incredibly compact conlang experiment, small enough to be only on both sides of an index card.

Not sure how far you can communicate with it, but it looks fun!

A language with one root word

I was scrolling about on this subreddit (like I do sometimes) to find some stuff. I was in the zone, I was basically showering without the shower. Then, I came up with this weird idea. What if there was a language with one root word? A word that has one meaning, but can have a load of stems.

Some examples of some stems:

Causes the tense to become its own word
Causes the word to become the reverse of meaning
Causes the word to become the meaning that is in between the reverse and regular
Negation
