Hi, I want to buy an Elac DBR62 and need some advice on choosing an amplifier. I have a choice of Yamaha a-s301/s501 (400€/550€) or Marantz PM6007 (475€) or Denon PMA-600NE (415€). Which amplifier's sound characteristics will be suitable for the DBR62? I listen mostly to electronic, ambient, cinematic and classical music. I will listen via Spotify/Tidal from a computer plugged into Topping D10s (as my pc doesn't have S/PDIF output) which will be plugged via toslink into an amp. Thanks for the advice
Hi all,
I’m looking for some advice on speaker choice and placement for my setup (UK based).
Here's the room and 3 possible configs. It's a small room (6m x3m / 10' x 20') with a low ceiling.
https://imgur.com/a/5DobfNS
Currently leaning towards KEF speakers based on their excellent reviews (though I haven’t had the chance to hear them in person yet), but I’m open to other suggestions too. Listen mostly to indie, hip hop and electronic music.
Here’s what I’m considering:
Source Setup: Mac Mini → Wiim Ultra
Equipment I have: Wiim Amp, Wiim Ultra, 2x AIYIMA A07 MAX, S.M.S.L SU-1 DAC
My 3 proposed configurations:
Nearfield setup: KEF Q1 Meta (on stands) or the more budget-friendly KEF Q150/Q350, powered by the AIYIMAs.
Dual listening zones: KEF Q150 or Q1 Meta on the desk for nearfield listening. KEF Q Concerto Meta for chair listening, with Q150 powered by the Wiim Amp and the Concerto powered by the AIYIMAs.
Modified dual zone: Same as above, but I’d rearrange the desk monitors to make space for the Q150 or Q1 Meta speakers.
I’ll also be storing away my current gear (AE towers, Monitor Audio 360 Sub, and A’Diva satellites) to simplify the setup.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the speaker choices and placement. Are the KEFs worth it for nearfield use? Is there a better way to configure my gear? Thanks in advance
Hello everyone. I'm looking for speakers that are not built in plastic for desktop use. Mainly to listen music, watch series and gaming. My favorite music genres are classical, electronic, rock, jazz and pop. I'm not looking on spending more than $500. Best wishes.
Hi,
I'm located in the US start collecting vinyl records a few years ago which has been fun and we really have been enjoying hanging out and listening to records. I want to upgrade my initial stereo setup for better audio quality and not sure where to start. I have a Sony DH190 receiver I got on sale. My turntable is a Audio-Technica LP120 and my speakers are two Elac Debut 2.0 bookshelf speakers. Sound has been good but looking to upgrade my system to improve the audio quality and wasn't sure if I should start with upgrading the cartridge to something like the Ortofon Red or Blue and getting a seperate pre-amp, as I have using the integrated pre-amp in the receiver. I don't have a sub-woofer as the receiver doesn't support it but wondered if I should consider upgrading the receiver as well.
My budget is about 2k for upgrading and my stereo is in a living room space that is about 1200 sq feet, listening about 10-15ft from the stereo. Mainly listen to Rock, Alternative, Country, Soul and some Jazz. Not looking for tons of bass as we live in condo with neighbors on both sides of us. "!thanks"
Would be for a living room setup, paired with a vintage Pioneer sx 727. I listen to jazz, rock and roll, EDM, folk and I'd like to start getting into classical.
I heard the monitors at an audio festival and was impressed. Everyone seems to drink the Lintons Kool aid though. Has anyone here heard both? Would you be able to point me in the right direction
Hi guys, total newbie here. I would like to get into the hi-fi world and get an entry level system (with a budget about 500 USD). Currently I am using an Edifier BT1700, so there is room for upgrade for sure. I like every kind of music (electronic, hard rock, metal, jazz and also classical and pop), I am not a basshead, I really like when small details show themself in a song... I also like it when the instruments get a certain texture, a warm sound).
I am planning to place the speakers on my desktop (I work from home office... I but didn't decide between bookshelf and desktop yet, because mainly I would like to have a system which I can replace somewhere else if that will be needed). My room is about 20 sqm and location is in Europe. I don’t have any turntables or CD player, I usually stream the music from Spotify via Bluetooth.
Right now I can’t decide between this two ways:
Or do you have any other suggestions? I really don’t know if Kef Q150 would make any sense — would it be a significant difference between sound quality compared to the Kanto YU4? I have to add, I live in a block of flats which also determines how loud I can really blast out the music. I don't have to be super careful but I think you know what I mean.
Thank you for your advice in advance!
Hi,
I'm based in England, and my current setup is:
Sources: MacBook Pro via RCA to 3.5mm cable, Rega Planar 1
Amplifier: Cambridge Audio CXA81 MKII
Speakers: Wharfdale Linton (pair) with stands
Phono stage: Pro-Ject Box MM
In the future, I will add a sub and upgrade the turntable and phono stage. Right now, however, I have the budget to stretch to a streamer; here are my options:
WiiM Pro Plus
WiiM Ultra
Cambridge Audio CXN100 MKII
I am also open to suggestions for better alternatives. I am mainly focused on finding the best-sounding streamer; I use local files and Tidal to stream exclusively, so I am looking for something that can handle lossless and FLACs. I'm just seeking advice on which streamer to go for and which should have the best sound for my setup. I will most likely be using the DAC built into the CXA81 MKII, but I am open to suggestions to streamers that include even better DACs if they are out there.
Budget: £1000 but very happy to spend less than that
Thanks in advance!
Hey all, I'm planning on getting my turntable setup in February when I get my bonus.
I want a Bluetooth turntable with a built in preamp and then I'll get a set of bookshelves separately. Alternatively I can get a set with everything included.
I'm in the Netherlands and I'm willing to spend around 1k.
If I were to buy the turntable separately, I was thinking of this one: Audio-Technica LP120xBTUSB (https://amzn.eu/d/j3FlpQF)
And I found these two sets but I'm not familiar with the brands.
Teufel: https://teufelaudio.nl/ultima-20-kombo-pro-ject-e1-bt-107002257 Project: https://doublepoint.nl/project-jukebox-s2-speaker-box-5-s2-set?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAxqC6BhBcEiwAlXp45zNlWlmjK3apbdOyL2enjd-RZVoqFY40oOZuXW4gav-qSj8EsX0lPhoCkx0QAvD_BwE
What are your views on these 3 options? (Just the turntable and some good speakers, the two all inclusive sets)
I have an AKAI 1200 Tube Amp Receiver from 1986 in my living room. What device and cables do I need in order to essentially connect and play bluetooth to my home receiver ? Would like to accomplish this for $50 or less if possible.
Hi, so I just ordered a pair of KEF Q350s from a second hand shop for €260 (tbh seems too good to be true, but I guess we'll see lmao) and I have a couple options in mind to complete the setup. I was wondering if someone could guide me to the most optimal one.
I will primarily be streaming FLAC files from my PC using Plex. I don't need bluetooth or a remote, but it's always welcome. Won't be using a sub for now, but it's nice to leave the option open for a potential future upgrade. Now, what I had in mind:
SMSL SU-1(€67) with Aiyima A07 Max(€90) or similar amp. See this as the most bare-bones/budget combo.
I have a chance to get SMSL AL200 second hand for €150. Will the SU-1 be practically obsolete with this amp, seeing as the AL200 has a (equally good?) integrated dac? Also no pre-out, can a high level input sub be easily connected to this?
Spend a little more and get a second hand Yamaha AS-301/501, probably no separate dac needed with this?
Other suggestions are for sure welcome! I highly appreciate any feedback. Cheers ✌️
40+ and going back to my childhood roots diving in on an entry-level turntable setup this year. (Oh the good memories of my mom's vintage setup cranked up all summer in my basement!) Starting from scratch.
After much research, I'm decided on the RT82 for turntable.
Now I'm in the fun stage of going back and forth on speaker setup. I'm in the USA.
At first, I thought active for ease, pretty quickly decided to start with at least a basic passive system so I can be in a better position to upgrade later.
So, if I go with the STRDH190 receiver...what are my best options for speakers to match it with? I'm probably up for spending $300 on the speakers, I might squeak up to $400 for a really compelling argument. And will I need any extra components here? I'd prefer not, if possible, for now.
Keeping in mind real life things:
The room where the setup will be is absolutely not optimal - the turntable and speakers will be on one side of the sofa. Not exactly sure of the size, but it's not a large room. But really, it's an open floor plan, and the overall goal is that I want to be able to generally enjoy listening throughout the house - which is small, not *just* while sitting in front of the turntable.
Music will be pretty across the board - from country to classic rock to indie to soul.
Appreciate the help :)
Hi friends, happy Thanksgiving!
I am in Canada and looking for a speaker to listen to music also use as sound system while watching movies.
Budget - I am good to spend up to $3000
My place is around 650 square feet
Currently I do not have any sound system.
I always wanted to own a B&O Beosound 2, visually it looks beautiful and the performance seems good I experienced at their store. However I am not knowledgeable.
I have two questions: 1- What do you think of B&O Beosound 2 performance. Is it worth to that much money? 2- What would be your preference the black anthracite or natural finish? https://www.bang- olufsen.com/en/ca/speakers/beosound-2
Thank you.
Hey Team,
I'm upgrading my desktop setup - I'm WFH so it gets heavy use. The Kali LP-UNF seems to get rave reviews for it's size and price, so that was what I was thinking of going with, but I don't need the USB input or bluetooth. My engineer brain tells me
With the LP-6 I get bigger woofers and no bluetooth/USB, so it seems like more of the money should be going into what I want :-D And still within budget. That said, maybe the extra money is not worth it when paired with a subwoofer anyway?
For context, the rest of the signal chain will be Macbook to MiniDSP DDRC24 via USB, then RCA cables to speakers + a B&W AS608 subwoofer.
Caught in analysis paralysis... Any opinions? :-D Basically, given that the lows will be handled by a sub anyway, would there be any benefit to the larger woofer in the LP-6?
Edit: Automod tells me I need to include a budget, I guess I would put that around 400USD ;-)
I want to get a desktop speaker setup with a subwoofer. I came across these and thought looked pretty good but I know nothing about speakers. I’m just looking for some speakers to listen to music with. I really enjoy high quality sound so, of course, I’d want the best for my buck. I don’t want anything over $150, because I’m cheap. Is this a good option? Any other suggestions? I would like to purchase new. Also, this would be for a computer setup.
Not sure what I should looking for. A powerstrip, conditioner, regenerator? I want something that's not going to harm SQ and will keep all my devices nicely plugged into one space and perhaps provide surge protection
My equipment: Chord Hugo TT2, Chord Mscaler, Chord Bertti, TV, PC, Game consoles, and Blu-ray player
I have no idea what device I should be looking at for this, that is also quality. My budget is around $1500 give or take some depending on the value
USA
As the title suggests I want to get my turntable setup going with a pair of active speakers and can't decide for which option I should opt.
My setup would consist of the Project Carbon Evo 2 as a turntable and my room is around 18 m² therefore I will listen to vinyl.
Budget is around 1200€ and I do live in Germany.
If you have any further questions or recommendations/suggestions be free to ask.
Help much appreciated!
Read some good reviews on the new version of B&Ws entry level and decided to build a setup around it since it is 25% off on Black Friday.
B&W 606 S3 Speakers - $810 B&W ASW608 Powered Subwoofer - $599 Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 TT - $699 Marantz 60n - $1,500
Main goal is listening to Vinyl and stream via HEOS (Lossless Apple Music or Tidal). Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, The Doors, etc… mainly rock.
Secondary use. The amp has an HDMI eARC HDMI connection so it will be connected to my TV. It will replace a $300 Polk Audio Soundbar.
Some say I am spending too much on the amp. But this has good streaming capabilities, Phono preamp., and it seems to be a newer version of the Marantz PM7000N which is very well recommended for these speakers.
Should I find a cheaper amp and go for the 707 S3? Bite the bullet, keep the Marantz and still go for the 707 S3? Keep the current setup…
Hi all,
Budget: $250 or less
Room Dimensions - 10x12
Music source - vinyl
No current audio gear
I'm buying for my 14-yo son who wants to start listening to vinyl. He will mostly be using wired or BT headphones as he shares a room with his brother. I would love for him to have something with good quality that can last him years, but ideally is under $250 as I'd like to also get him some good over-ear headphones as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Basically, I have little to no knowledge regarding speakers. I will be sharing these speakers with a fellow who composes music. And I myself will be using them for high-end gaming and programming (indie dev).
What are some of the best options out there? I don’t want something incredible large, just something that can fit under my table (pretty long table), or on top of my table (not much space on the table anymore lol). I don’t need something wall shaking, just whatever’s the requirements for my needs.
What do you guys recommend considering my needs?
(PS: I could spend about $200 CAD if it’s really necessary… but ideally, I wouldn’t want to spend that much)
Hello everyone,
I will preface this long post by saying I am fairly new to Hi-Fi and due to my use case I may post in the Home Theater subreddit too at a later date.
Some information to get this started (hopefully I'm not missing any key details).
Location: Japan Budget: fairly flexible but I am aiming at around JPY 350,000 in total. Room Size: 2.8 meter by 2.8 meter. Distance between listening position and TV/speakers: about 2 meters Listening level: about 75 DB on average. I would appreciate bookshelf speakers that sound reasonably good at low volume, i.e voices/ dialogues should be intelligible even at low listening level as I live in an apartment and I do not wish to disturb my neighbors. Preferred headphones: Epos H6 Pro (open back), Meze 99 Neo.
Use case: video games (50%) / movies (25%) / music (25%).
Artists I typically listen to: Radiohead, Muse, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Rory Gallagher, Lou Reed, John Lennon, T. Rex, New Order, Chemical Brothers.
Equipment I already own: Sony Bravia TV (A95K) PlayStation 5 Pro Xbox Series X LG sound bar SJ4 with a subwoofer, connected to TV via optical cable, although I do prefer the sound of the built-in A95K TV speakers. I also inherited a dozen of records earlier this year but as I know very little about vinyls as a music format, I have not purchased a turntable yet. Ideally
Due to my specific use case and the lack of space in my media room, I am looking at the following equipment (prices are in Japanese yen) but I am open to any suggestions you may have of course. Just keep in mind a number of Hi-Fi brands (e.g. SVS or Triangle) do not get distributed properly in Japan, meaning having to pay high price from resellers and that is IF you can even manage to find the speaker model you wish to purchase. Triangle BR03 loudspeakers were sold at JPY 108,000 as of recently for example (compared to USD 500 in the States I believe).
Amplifiers:
Loudspeakers:
607 S3 (JPY 104,000)
606 S3 (JPY 126,000)
Subwoofers:
-Klipsch Reference R-101SW (JPY 72,000)
Turntables (fully automatic)
Active Speaker Solution -KEF LSX II (JPY 178,000) KEF S1 stand: 39,000
A few questions:
Amongst the options above are there any preferable pairings (e.g. Marantz Models M1 with B&W 607S3 and ASW608/MB subwoofer)?
If I do end up getting the Marantz Model M1 or Demon Home Amp, how would I be able to plug a pair of wired headphones (given the lack of headphone port)?
Considering the room size, should I even consider purchasing a subwoofer regardless of the loud speakers mentioned above?
Would the Monitor Audio Silver 100 7G not be too big and sound too boomy in this small room, I wonder? If so, would that issue also apply to the B&W 606 S3?
Would the KEF LSX II combined with the Kube Mie 8 subwoofer not be a more straight forward solution than any of the passive speakers mentioned above?
Or am I better off sticking to passive speakers for a more reliable solution in the long run?
I have read online the Massimo group may shut down some of their brands (including Marantz, Denon and Bowers & Wilkins) in January 2025. If so, will that impact any purchase warranty? Also, do you expect any deep discount as a result of the shut down?
I saw the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Signature bookshelf speakers in a shop and I was blown away by their look and finish (which partially explains their high cost at JPY 485,000). They were bi-wired to a Marantz Model 30 amp and connected to a Marantz SA30 cd player. Out of curiosity, on a second visit to the store, I did bring along a Radiohead CD to test out the speakers and I ended up being a bit underwhelmed by their sound even setting the volume at 50 on the amp. Are they speakers that perform poorly at low volume perhaps? I specifically recall a review video (https://youtu.be/7yppX0VX4yo?si=FjYcj7GxtpBXfaB4) from Andrew Robinson about those speakers where he mentioned they paired very well with the Marantz Model M1 amplifier and sounded great at low volume so I am a bit puzzled as to why they sounded "muffled" IMO even compared to a pair of B&W 607 S3 amped by a Marantz Model M1. Perhaps I am missing something here? I wonder if the speakers would also perform that poorly in my small media room too?
Sorry for the long ramble and a massive thank you in advance for any insight or suggestion you may have.
Hey group, hoping to get sme insight and suggestions here. Starting my audiophile journey here and recently snagged some awesome B&W 802s S2 for a very reasonable $600 for the pair.
Looking for some suggestions on reasonably priced intergrated amps to power these suckers. Ive hear some of the mid 2000 rotels are the best pairing. Wondering what thoughts are around the newer class D stuff with built in streaming and DAC like the WiiM Amp. Also looking at some of thr Class AB amps from Shiit which seam reasonable but will likely then need a pre amp and a DAC.
On that note , any suggestions around hi res streaming devices / platforms etc
Looking forward to thoughts and feedback
!thanks
Hi there. I got bitten by the Black Friday bug and now I have an Arcam A15 on its way. In Uk and I currently have Quad s2 speakers, but thinking of moving current set up to another smaller room and getting new speakers for the Arcam.
This is for a medium just tipping over to large sized room. Will be listening to vinyl, cd and streaming through Wiim pro plus. All genres - mainly rock, funk, soul, electronic, jazz and classical in roughly that order.
Want to spend less than £1000 - ideally closer to £500. Happy with second hand want to make sure I get speakers that will match and make most of the Arcam A15. Thank you for any advice you can give!
Hi everyone.
I think I convinced my fiancee we’re putting a pair of Genelec 8040 in the living room.
Now, i’m looking for a streamer.
everyone seems in love with the Wiim Ultra here. And i see most people are told they don’t need a standalone DAC or even a preamp.
Why is that? Is it because most people just listen to spotify or sth like that?
What about all the other streamers? I’m thinking
And wouldn’t it be worth getting a separate DAC and balanced preamp for listening to CDs, concert DVDs, streamed concerts, and hi-res audio files?
!thanks
Location: we’re based in Italy, I can buy online from all over the EU
Experience: i’m not new to this, i own too much audio gear already, but i’m going from a PC-as-source setup to a traditional Hi-Fi setup.
source material: we’re gonna listen to records, CDs, audio files at all resolutions, as well as stream music and movies through those speakers.
budget: around 1000 for the streamer
Hey guys i live LA and im looking for subwoofer which brands worth very penny? Im eyeing SVS brand atm and it has clean and deep bass. Can anyone suggest where to find the best deals for subwoofer this coming Black Friday? Also, what brand would you recommend? My budget around 500-600. This is for my gym setup at home. TIA!
update - thanks for the suggestions guys, took a deep dive into this Black Friday's deals on subwoofers and came up with this list, sharing in case anyone cares for it:
Best subwoofer Black Friday deals:
So, for casual lower volume listening to streaming and radio on my Dali Opticon 5 speakers, will I notice a real sound difference in the two amps?
I was going for the Denon because they were around the same price, but since the WiiM has a good Black Friday deal I can get it at 150 cheaper than the Denon. So that’s worth the consideration.
The thing that is holding me back on the WiiM is that you can not no-wire your speakers. I have borrowed some pretty good bi-wire cables at the moment, so I have to buy new cables. But will I notice the difference?
Hi, I recently inherited an old turntable from my late grandfather, along with two speakers. Unfortunately, one of the speakers no longer works, so I’m looking for suitable replacements.
The challenge is that the turntable uses an old DIN 41529 input, so I assume I’ll need an adapter to connect modern speakers. I’ve been considering the Triangle Borea BR03 speakers, but I’m unsure if they’re compatible.
Ideally, I’d love to use the speakers for both the turntable and other devices via Bluetooth, though Bluetooth isn’t a strict requirement. My budget is between €300 and €500, and I’m based in Belgium. I’d really appreciate recommendations for good speakers within this price range that would work with my setup.
Thank you in advance!

Hi all, I need advice. I was using ELAC BS 192 with Denon PMA-520AE for years and was happy with the combo; maybe it was missing a little bit in the bass range. Recently, I purchased a new TV stand; unfortunately, it has only 5.5 inches of height clearance for an amplifier, and my Denon does not fit there. Changing the TV set is not an option. The sound source is a Dell laptop plus Topping DX3 Pro DAC. My budget is up to $600, and I don't have a preference between Class A/B or Class D. Both new and used are acceptable. I was looking into the streaming field, something like the Bluesound Powernode, but now I think that a regular 2 or even 3-channel amplifier is just fine, but I'm open to any ideas. Primarily, I'll be watching movies and listening to streaming music.
Good Evening All,
I'm looking for an Integrated Amplifier to pair with my Heritage Lintons. I'm looking to spend no more than $2000 cdn max. I've been thinking about the following;
Audiolab 7000a
Leak Stereo 230
Yamaha R-N600
If there are other suggestions, by all means weight in. Your time and thoughts are greatly appreciated. My room is medium to large, but I will be sitting near field.
Edit: looking to not spend my maximum amount, if it can be helped..
Edit: i would like to thank you all for your time and ideas, suggestions and comments. They are all greatly appreciated. I will review each of your suggestions and hopefully should have everything purchased in the coming months. The money I will be using to purchase any of your suggestions, will be due to my Dad's recent passing. He, as well as the rest of his/my family shared a great love for music. His first big system he purchased was a pair of JVC Zero 10 speakers in Saudi, back in the day, along with the appropriate components to run them. He would be tickled pink to see all the responses here.
I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving, if your in the US of A and fun-filled upcoming holiday season!
Kindest regards,
Hi, as beginner I’m setting up a sound system for my 8m² room.
The space is both a home office and a mini recording studio.
My budget is $400-500 (Living in Japan)
I read that some people add a subwoofer to studio monitors to make them better for home stereo use, so I’m considering that. I want something with good bass, enough power, and versatility for music listening, mixing, and light recording.
I like models from:
Sub? I don t know
I’ve also seen comments about needing extra equipment like a DAC, preamp, or volume control, but I don’t fully understand what those are or if I need them. Could someone explain?
I’ll be connecting everything to my MacBook. I think my favorite choice would be Adam monitors with a subwoofer. What do you think?
Thanks!
TLDR - Wiim Amp vs Denon Stereo amp + Wiim streamer for music + tv
Currently looking to change up my system in my small living room - changing from a 3.1 setup (due to an aging AVR) to a 2.1 setup. Main uses are for connected to tv, but main priority is quality music streaming. However ease of use is also key e.g. ideally not too many remotes, separate components to be turned on/off etc. System will be paired with my Fyne Audio f301 speakers and a Wharfedale powered sub. Would love to hear any thoughts/experience/recommendations on the below 3 considerations:
Won’t be listening at any loud volumes, so don’t think amp power is major issue? Goal for tv is ease of use, and goal for music streaming is sound quality. Don’t envisage adding any other sources. Any thoughts or guidance appreciated.
