Welcome to Milwaukee's bike subreddit! From the urban commuters to the beach cruisers, everyone and their bike is welcome here for newbie advice, pro events, and everything in between!
Bike maps and bike shops are listed in the wiki.
Oak Leaf Trail system map - PDF - non-interactive, shows all lines and adjacent parks.
Oak Leaf Trail system map - interactive - Interactive browser-based map of the trail system and parks.
City of Milwaukee's Low-stress Bike Route Finder is the City's/DPW's interactive bike map, which gives color-codes roads by comfort level
CyclOSM.org - OpenStreetMap-based bike map, which anyone can edit. Shows road lanes, separated trails, and signed bike routes.
-area/extent included in URL
-fluid zoom
-bike lanes & trals are slightly easier to see
-has a huge key/legend
-many many (maybe too many) symbols and types of lines, many are very similar shapes & colors
-bike racks/parking are a different shade of blue, and are circles
OpenCycleMap.org - Renders the OSM data slightly differently. Bike routes are easier to read, while bike lanes on roads are more difficult to read.
-fixed URL in the address bar, so you cannot share a link to a specific map area/extent (but has a permalink at the bottom)
-fixed zoom levels, not fluid like GMaps, etc
-emphasizes signed bike routes whether or not they have bike lanes on the road or are off-street trails
-and gives different colors to local, regional, and inter/national bike routes
-and also de-emphasizes bike lanes and trails (lighter line weight: harder to see/notice)
-doesn't render bike boulevards/greenways/designated shared streets (but cyclosm does)
-bike racks are blue squares
-small map key/legend

Pre-register online at mkerec.net or at any Milwaukee Recreation location.
Fall colors were out in force despite the summery weather
Hope to see everyone for the October ride!
Critical Mass is a (fun!) socially-paced ride (about 10 mph). We ride to be in community with other cyclists/skaters/scooterers/etc, provide safety in numbers, and demand safe transportation infrastructure for all You are welcome to leave the ride when you’d like, but as a "no drop" ride, we don’t leave anyone behind because of speed. (We cannot stop for mechanical issues, though.)
The starting point at Red Arrow is accessible by transit:
We hope that over time, folks will make connections with people from their neighborhoods and can organize smaller groups to ride together to the starting point. If anyone is interested in organizing a bike bus from their neighborhood to Red Arrow, let us know!
So I just moved over here and saw about 50+ motorcycles speeding on the oak leaf trail last night. Is this like a normal occurrence? A police car seemed to be trying to chase them on surface streets(not doing a particularly great effort BTW). This was at about 8:30 or so.
Is this something that I'll have to be on the lookout for on off-street trails?
Usually take the Hank out west near state fair to get to work, but had an event downtown this past Thursday and got to switch up the morning ride a bit! Loved the views. I miss riding with these city sunrises :)
This will be my first winter using my bike to commute 1 day a week to work. I use a mix of the bus and Hank Aaron for my morning commute and strictly streets for my commute home. My question for those who commute in the winter, what pieces of gear do you find essential for a (somewhat) comfortable ride?
I’m looking to do a sunrise ride tomorrow (Sunday) morning, riding along most of the lakefront portions of the Oak Leaf and west on the Hank Aaron.
I’ve never seen it be actually closed, but I wanted to check beforehand.
Thanks!
Didn’t really know I was allowed to bike around Jones’ island- or that there is a public park there (Kozubes’ park)! Pretty neato. Fun area to explore, kinda felt like I was trespassing the entire time lol
Hope to see everyone for the September ride!

If you plan to stay at the Hubbard Park for food and drink at the end of the ride, you can RSVP here. This is not required but will help the event organizers plan accordingly!
I’m planning a long ride to cap off the summer from Tosa to the northern end of the Interurban, a bit over 80 miles. It’ll be my first time on the Interurban. A small top tube bag and jersey pockets will be enough for nutrition, but there’s no way I’ll be able to carry enough water unless I convince my wife to drive a support car. Are there enough public drinking fountains along the trail to make this possible without support?
Hey friends!
A couple of years ago, I tried to pump my tires at the bike station outside of Corner Bakery in Shorewood, just off the Oak Leaf. I, as well as another cyclist, had difficulty with the air pump and the other cyclist determined the pump was in need of repair. Has anyone used it recently?
Hello. Wondering if any one is running a single speed commuting bike (in the city specifically) and if so what is your gear ratio?
Just curious if anyone had any suggestions for bathrooms along the Oak Leaf trail.
Want to do it indoors for consistent power.
Are there any good gravel biking opportunities in Milwaukee area?
My girlfriend and I are pretty new to cycling in Milwaukee. As we're looking to upgrade bikes, gravel bikes are looking pretty appealing.
Gravel aside, I like the idea of running slightly larger, tubeless tires that you can run at lower PSI to get a little more comfort on the rougher roads we deal with.
Thanks for the responses! You guys are super helpful.
