For reasons that I swear have nothing to do with murder, I'm going to have regular access to human blood. Could I pour it directly in the water? Could I let it congeal in some way and have them eat that?
Do you guys bruise after leeching?
(marked nsfw just in case) I honestly thought it had parasites at first. But I guess its just a good parent.
My leeches will be moved in a modified fishtank when everything is ready, but for now they live in big glasses with some decor and frequent waterchanges (they are still shedding a lot from their last meal).
Hey, so I'm setting up a 2.5-gallon blackwater aquarium for some leeches I'm getting soon. I was wondering if a metal screen lid like the ones used for reptiles would be okay for them or if the holes are too big and they could squeeze through. I have a picture of the lid in question. Thanks for any advice!
Baby Buffalo Leeches arriving now! Ready for their new homes in just a few weeks. I ship within the US.
Hirudinaria Mallinesis is one of the largest species of leech, and is growing in popularity in the hiruduculture (leech keeping) hobby. They have simple care requirements and make fun, low maintenance pets if you can handle feeding.
Reach out via PM or message here for more information. I'm always happy to discuss leeches!
Hey, I recently received 8 leeches and 7 of them latched and fed and are happy in their new jar of spring water.
Little David on the other hand, has not latched and does not seem interested in latching at all. Kind of lethargic as well.
Are there any tips on anything I can do to get it interested in feeding?
This is my first time with leeches and I'm not sure what might help it
They're so pretty aaaahh
Hello!! I’ve never kept any leeches before, but say I wanted to keep one in a 10 or so gallon tank with very little light. Does anyone know of any inactive species of medicinal leech that is not too curious? I know people generally keep them in small enclosures but I’d feel too guilty to have a super curious escape artist in a smaller tank.
Just got two leeches from a family friend who practices hirudotherapy. I'm already in love with these dudes hehe Here's a shitty video of them exploring.
Heya, I've feed my leech on myself multiple times, and she's always been a slow girl, taking about an hour and a half every time. I fed her today and she disconnected after twenty five minutes. I noticed she was VERY active pumping and I felt a little more pain than usual this time as she was more continuously biting. Attempts to reattach failed, she was simply done, even moved AWAY from the wound. She looks to be almost as full as she's been during previous feeds and I'm definitely bleeding like it. She's an adult hirudo verbana
This has just been an outlier in my experiences with my precious baby, and I definitely am concerned because when leech behavior gets different, that's usually a bad thing. Do y'all have these crazy differing feed times with your leeches?
Trying to source horse leech here in the UK . anyone any ideas . i live West Sussex if it helps
This is my giant Draculas first feeding (on me ofc) <3
So I was feeding my leeches and I think one of them started vomiting while feeding. He made these weird undulating motions and fresh blood states oozing out (gross, sorry), but then he went back to feeding normally. Is this ok? These are medicinal leeches I've had since the fall. Should I be worried about bacteria or infection?
Howdy! This is my first time owning leeches and I've heard alder cones and almond leaves are good for if they get sick. Would it be safe to stick some in their tanks as a preventive measure while they're still healthy or could that cause issues?
I found this little guy in a pool of water by a fire hydrant in a park at first I thought it was a leech but then it stuck its antenna out so It might be a slug can someone help identify this little guy.
Hi everyone, i bought leeches for the first time. In my country they are not allowed for purchase outside of medical trials. I found a man who sells them and they are the hirudo verbana. I am thinking to message him and ask him if they are safe to use but could you guys give me some suggestions as to what kind of questions i should be asking? And any advice for first time buying, how to ensure they are safe to use etc. it would be appreciated!! Thank you!
I've been thinking of getting a tattoo recently but I was wondering if that would affect my leeches and they're feeding? I'm unsure if the tattoo inks would effect them in any way when feeding because the spots my leeches feed are where I want to get some tats to cover up their scars since my skin is pretty light and their bites really pop out :p (Bonus picture of gundam feeding just for fun)
I was wondering if you can use bait leech vs medicinal, to feed off your own blood. Would it be dangerous to use bait leech?
I've added catappa leaves to my leeches tank since he's having digestive issues. How long do they usually take to help the leech out? I've already noticed that char is starting to move a lot more again but his body still looks weird.
I currently have three ribbon leeches, and I found egg cases all over their jar this past week. I heard somewhere (forgot where exactly) that leeches will die after mating. Has anyone had any experience to confirm or deny this? Thanks a lot.
I really hope its offspring!!
