Jazz, blues, rock, funk - heck even classical - the Hammond organ is just pure awesomeness.

This is a place to appreciate the awesome sound of the Hammond.

Feel free to post, as long as it's related to Hammond Organs.

Would one be able to build a Hammond organ today with no original parts?

I’m not talking about a VST or clonewheel or digital thing. I’m talking about a real Hammond B3, but built today, no parts from an older existing B3 whatsoever. EVERYTHING is recreated from the ground up using modern circuitry, cutting and machining, including the tonewheels, key contacts, bus bars, motor, percussion, chorus vibrato, preamplifier, Leslie speaker and Leslie preamp. Do you think that would be possible at all?

Drawbar dimensions

I am attempting to 3D print some drawbars to build a little MIDI controller. I was curious if someone could give me the dimensions of the real deal? Specifically, I want to know how big the handle is, how long the drawbar extents and how far apart the drawbars are spaced. If anyone could share that info, I would be very grateful.

About the pedals. What would be the benefit, if any, if adding a pedalboard to my clonewheel set up?

I play an SK-1, and right now I use a midi keyboard as a lower manual. I've never actually had the chance to play much on a proper organ with pedals.

I adore all the masters of the Hammond B3 and I am amazed by the technique of playing bass with foot pedals. But is it actually necessary?

I asked my organ teacher, he said that he learned the pedals "out of necessity" because he played many gigs on organs that didn't produce enough bass tone with the lower manual alone, he said the pedals gave him that extra bass boost. I don't really have this problem with the SK-1, in fact you can set the "M Bass" button so the lower manual doubles the pedal notes for extra bass boost.

My teacher says the pedals are mostly used to "accent" the bass lines, and that he mostly just plays them in unison with his left hand. He says it's not particularly difficult to learn how to double your left hand with a pedal board

How do you use the pedals? Also, any famous organists who didn't play the pedals? I heard Richard Holmes wasn't a pedal guy, not sure if that's confirmed.

A total novice needs help with Hammond/Leslie matching

I am currently hunting for a B3 (or if that falls short, an A100), and in the meantime I found a posting for a Leslie that is a modified 31H lowered to the approximate height of a model 145. The tremolo (top) horn has been converted to 2-speed operation using an original Leslie two-speed motor assembly.

Would that be compatible with and sound good with either a B3 or A100? Ideally, I'd like to get a B3 paired with a 122, but the price seems right for this speaker.

I was told a while back that some Leslies can fry the organ electronics as some send power back to the pre-amp. Is that right? What Leslies do I need to be careful about hooking up to a B3 or A100?

Thanks ya'll!

Smaller Leslie clone/rotary amp for gigging

Are you gigging with a Leslie that's not a Leslie, not a 3300 (which I believe refers to both the model, the price and the weight), with an amp that's on the market now, weighs less than a 3300 and how do you feel about it? I was eyeballing the Leslie Studio 12 but it appears it's delayed indefinitely due to supply chain shortages or something.

Pre-pandemic I ran my Electro into a Ventilator II into a keyboard amp, but I want something that actually moves air because you can't beat it. I'll be playing my Electro for gigs and my B3 (which has sadly never had a Leslie friend) through it at home.

Rate my organ setup?

How do you all rate this setup(planned, not yet completed) for various kinds of classical, church and jazz improvisation in performance settings?

-Two Oxygen 61's (someone is selling a Numa Organ 2 nearby, is that a good option?)

-Stand : https://kraftmusic.com/products/on-stage-ks7150-platform-style-keyboard-stand?variant=45257213640978 (with attachment for dual manuals)

-Hammond XPK 250 25-note MIDI Pedal Board

-Bench : https://kraftmusic.com/products/quiklok-bz-7-heavy-duty-bench-with-cushion?variant=45588289749266

-My computer +behringer interface + speakers I have no information or experience to choose.

Home organ model pedalboard dimensions for MIDI project

I've been looking into building a MIDI bass pedal project for a while now and I'm trying to see if I can get a cheap Hammond (something like the 122J) that I could scrap down for parts. I'm planning a chassis for my build in advance but I can't find any of the measurememnts for the pedalboard itself anywhere. My main concern is the length of the whole pedal rod and where along that length the return springs sit. Thought I'd ask here to see if someone who has maybe done something like this and has experience could help out.

Hammond M-103 rotary sound

Ok so I’ll soon be getting a Hammond m-103 that is in great condition and is working. My only question is how would I go about hooking it up to a Leslie speaker or getting it hooked up to a Leslie simulator such as a ventilator. I’ve heard some people talk about hookup boxes but couldn’t find a lot of info on them.

Best keyboard setup visually?

I’m thinking about what kind of keyboard setup would look good in live Baroque and jazz performance. Of course I know the typical black rack stand with 2 midi keyboards-setup which was my original plan.

Hauptwerk guys are good at woodworking and putting together a fancy looking console, but I don’t have those skills. Just looking for visual improvements or ideas, anything goes. Thanks

Online lesson recommendations

Hi guys

I’ve searched online and no one teaches organ in my area or surrounding.

I’m so far self taught (can play piano at a very, VERY basic level) by a combination of ear, messing about and watching videos on YouTube relating to things I want to learn.

However, I’m wondering is there any online lessons that follow a structured regime (ie from beginner to novice sort of thing) as the problem with searching lesson by lesson, based on what I want to do, is that I could easily be missing a lot of stuff that I don’t know I need to know, if that makes sense.

Any recommendations would be great and don’t mind paying of course, as I was well prepared to pay a tutor if their were any, but if anyone knows free ones too I’m a sucker for a bargain.

Thanks

Clonewheel or VST

Just need some advice before I make a decision. I have an opportunity to buy a Hammond xk-1c for around $1000. I’m wondering if my money is better spent on a midi keyboard and vst like the IK multimedia which would be much cheaper at around $300. In my mind, it’s tough to justify the higher price of the Hammond for the same features. If it feels better to play though I’m willing to pay.

I don’t gig often but occasionally travel to a studio and would like to be able to transport the setup. At home I have an A101, M, M111 with 22H and 125 Leslie cabinets. I know these are irreplaceable. However I haven’t been able to play for some time because all of them require maintenance. I’m learning to repair them myself as techs are hard to come by in my area, but it’s a slow process. I’ve also got De Quervain tenosynovitis, so moving these monsters really sucks.

Mainly I’m concerned with how the keyboard feels to play and how close it sounds to the real deal. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The real reason we play Hammond

Come on! You have to admit, even if it isn't your style, you've at least thought of playing a Jon Lord riff.

“Spacey” sound on an idling B3

Note: I am not a keyboard player.

30-plus years ago, I was walking by a piano store and saw a B3 with a leslie on the sales floor. I had never seen a B3 before, so I went inside and asked the salesman if I could try it. He showed me how to start it up and demonstrated how the drawbars worked. It was the one and only time I have ever played a B3.

One thing I noticed immediately was a quiet tone that I could hear when I wasn't touching the keyboard. I'd heard this sound before, at the beginning of the song "And You And I" from the Close to the Edge album by Yes. Its the quiet "spacey" sound behind the 12 string guitar.

What causes this sound? Is there a name for this sound? Do clonewheel organs make this sound?

Problem with Hammond SK1

Hello! Yeasterday I had a concert with my sk1, and it worked just fine the first half of the set. But on the other half it started switching between my favourites. At first it was like once every 30 seconds but at the end it was almost every 5 seconds. Does anyone know why this happened? It doesnt seem like anyone has spilled anything on it, or like any button is acting weird.

If I’m thinking of this little “alligator clip to amp/transformer of some sort to quarter inch pl-55” right appears to me I could use this drive a speaker cabinet?

New to group and also new to my home Hammond M3

Hi everyone! Was graciously passed on this M3 from a Facebook ad free of charge today. In the best condition of any Hammond M series I’ve ever played on. Even has record of the last documented oil servicing it received in 1958. Sounds gorgeous and fully functional!

Is it meant to be so loud with all drawbars out?

Sorry for the daft question, I’m a beginner on the organ. I have a clone wheel (Roland vr730) and I usually play with 880000000 or 888800000 settings, maybe some 2s or 3s in a couple of the upper bars but when I decide to switch to all drawbars out for soloing the clone wheel I have gets so loud it drowns out everything else.

I’ve noticed this is a sound used a lot in rock music for the Hammond solos but with no real change to the dynamics. Is this because the player is utilising the swell pedal or are they not going fully out on the drawbars? Or is it simply because they have hammonds with 2 manuals and the upper one is set slightly quieter to compensate this?

Any help/answers would be great. Thanks.
