what type of jazz is jazz BGM?

it cant be smooth jazz as smooth jazz is things like sade, Kenny g or Boney James.

Here's an example of Jazz BGM.

is it cool jazz perhaps? is it its own think? I know it could be cocktail jazz but cocktail jazz seems to be strictly piano and these tracks do sometimes have saxophone and trumpets. help please.

How do I start listening to jazz?

Hi I am really interested to get into Jazz but I don't know where to start from. This is my playlist of Jazz tracks that I enjoy very much https://open.spotify.com/playlist/40cQ3KC7foeBIpb3foXi2v?si=zqwdp8ANT0m5MBi7cl6S7w&pi=0UKW9RKQStOmx

I don't know if they are actual jazz though. Please feel free to educate me as I really want to learn about Jazz.

Seawind anyone?

I’ve been on a massive Seawind kick lately. Does anyone else dig that group? If not, I highly suggest checking out their records from the 70s. Killer band.

Realizing I might like jazz, hoping for recs based on what I like so far

Sorry if this gets asked a lot. It seems like there are so many different types of jazz and I'm not sure what they all are so I'm looking for recommendations based on things I've heard that I liked.

KNOWER - Overtime

Too Many Zooz - Bedford

Hot 8 Brass Band - Sexual Healing

Tigran Hamasyan - What The Waves Brought

Those are just a few, I know they're all probably pretty different but does any particular style stand out from these songs? Thank you!

general advice for jazz arranging?

I wanna write an arrangement for my university’s jazz band. i’ve never done big band arranging before at all, but even if we don’t play it i think it’ll be a good learning experience. i’m looking on my university’s database and online for resources, and once i have something i can go to my professors to polish it. looking on here for general advice about it, anything you’d like to give me, any resources or personal lessons learned from experience. pls and thank you!!! ❤️

Vic Juris - Everything I Love (from 1982's 'Bleeker Street'), lovely playing from a prolific but somewhat-underrated guitarist

Why is Laufey getting more media attention than Samara Joy

Note: This is not a hit Piece on Laufey, I love her and Samara Joy's music. This is just my opinion based on some of my own observations.

So, the 2025 Grammys just ended and, Samara Joy just won her Fourth and Fifth Grammy all within the Jazz music Category. Examining the stark differences and similarities Laufey and Samara's careers had me thinking about something. So far, Laufey got to perform at lollapalooza, The London Jazz festival, the Newport Jazz festival, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. She got her own tour, her own movie, got a brand deal with Chanel, attended major fashion weeks and even walked the met gala. Laufey has been critically acclaimed by major artists and even Kpop Idols started covering her songs. Samara on the other hand has also done some major performances at Jazz festivals and also performed on the today show and the Jennifer Hudson show, she even sung a song for the Shirley chisholm movie on Netflix. She's performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie hall and overall, has more awards and critical acclaim with more so Jazz enthusiasts. I understand that Samara style of Jazz is very different than Laufey's style of Jazz, and I also understand that Laufey style of Jazz might be a little more digestible to modern listeners because it has more of a pop edge to it. However, I think that Samara Joy should also get just as much attention as Laufey is getting because she is a genuinely talented artist and I personally enjoy her music a little bit more because, it embodies more of that older Jazz style in the tradition of artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie holiday. Laufey is also a talented artist in her own right, but we've see how time and time again the media will pedestalize a white artist performing black music styles as opposed to giving that same amount of media attention a black artist performing the same style of music. Samara has more awards and Grammy wins than Laufey but yet in still, I haven't seen Samara being memorialized in the same way Laufey has over the past couple of years. People even started branding Laufey as the "Savior of Jazz" even though Jazz never needed to be saved. I know not of this is Laufey's fault though, she's just doing her job and so is Samara. Maybe Samara is happy with not having to much attention on her which is also okay. However, I hope after this grammy win, Samara gets more of her props as a Gen z Jazz icon that she so rightfully deserves. And I wish nothing but the best for her and Laufey in the next steps in their careers. Even though this is MY opinion, You may correct me if I seem to be wrong about anything.👍🏿

anyone else here happen to like jpop?

Super weird question i know but I would love to meet other musicians who also like genres like jpop and appreciate all the jazz influences in it. So far I haven't found many but maybe there are a few of you lurking around. I would love to make some friends with people with similar music tastes!

Can you guys identify the basic form / concept of Lee Morgan’s “Yes I can, no you can’t”?

This is a song I’ve always liked, and for some reason I’m having trouble discerning the basic concept of it. I’m a dumb drummer who’s dyslexic and can’t read charts, and never learned theory. But my ear is usually great haha.

The kind of description I’m looking for would be, for example, if I would describe Coltrane’s “Traneing In”, I would say it’s an AABA where the A’s are a blues and the B is the bridge from Rhythm changes.

The head, the changes you blow on, and the interlude thing in the Lee Morgan song are confusing me cuz they seem different from each other?? I absolutely LOVE that turnaround thing - at the end of the form?

2025 jazz

Hi everyone,

Do you have any album recommendations from this first month of 2025?

I have one to recommend you all: Leo Genovese and Mariano Otero - New York Sessions Vol. 1

https://preview.redd.it/6qnjgeoo30he1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc46b930bab4a4a8e37f77bdbd6bfd4bc688393f

This album consists only on piano and bass. Both musicians are Argentinian and they are both great. I don't know about the bass player, Mariano Otero, but I'm pretty sure you must have heard the pianist Leo Genovese before: he plays with Esperanza Spalding, he has toured with Wayne Shorter, he's the musical director of the rapper Residente and he's currently a member of Mars Volta. Anyway, check the album out, I'm sure you will like it.

Does anyone have any other recs? I'll be looking forward to your responses!

If I like… ? (Recommendations)

I’ve been sort of obsessed with Yussef Dayes projects and live recordings, and You’re Dead by Flying Lotus for a while now (as well as the Maida Vale session)

I love the

frenetic energy drum style Layers of keys\synths

Also, an OD’d guitar;

Something that isn’t included that much but I love it when it is on these projects, and I could totally see a guitarist performing in a fusion group.

Does anyone know any groups that include a bassist, drummer, guitarist and keys? (not opposed to more players by any means)

Can anyone recommend anything with all these elements? Or something similar?

Thanks!

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio - Midnight Sugar (TBM)

From the Japan came this album, released in 1974 by TBM, an audiophile label, this is a brilliant piece of music. The band is composed of Tsuyoshi Yamamoto on piano, Isaio Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro on drums. The track list includes some standards and 2 originals from Yamamoto. Used for the demonstration of hi-fi sets or in audiophile shows this is really a high quality sound recording. Try it at YouTube.

I really love Sunrise by Trombone Shorty for its slightly energetic and soul feeling, but I can't really find anything else like it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Similar to Solo Monk

It’s been my top played jazz album for the year, but I’d love to broaden my jazz piano horizon. I love solo piano works where it’s someone discovering on their own, and the playfulness is huge, any other similar solo piano albums that have that same feel?
