…How damn good this album is. For a cartoon soundtrack it could have been a throwaway but Vince made it something special. It’s got blues, cool jazz, hard bop, and all of the Christmas standards are totally reinvented. Great stuff.
tl;dr any recommendations for modern jazz artists?
Yo. Im old and lame—well, in my 40s, so not that old, but quite lame—and for the first time in my life I find myself listening to more recently produced jazz. Always been a big fan of bebop and adjacent styles, the obvious names, but lately I’ve discovered artists like Kamasi Washington, Yussef Dayes, and BadBadNotGood—have dived headlong mainly into the first two and am loving both.
Also mixed up in this recently, finally heard The Smile for the first time (told you, lame), and I’m digging it. I’ve always really enjoyed math rock/post punk/post hardcore/noise rock type stuff with jazz influence, but I’ve never gotten into the more jazz-rock/fusion end of things or whatnot at any level really (post Miles & co. anyway, certainly nothing current) and also would be open to exploring down those lines more.
So anyway—I’ve rambled and broadened the scope of this more than I was really aiming coming in maybe, but any suggestions for expanding my horizons? TIA!
Not a huge fan of most jazz but recently heard a band called The Dirty Rotten Vipers and have fallen in love with that sound, if anyone could recommend me some more stuff with a similar sound i’d very much appreciate it
Hi. I have a series of photos of Jazz greats that were taken in Germany in the late 80s/Early 90s, with many signed. I feel like the photographer took the photos, developed them and then took them back to the musicians for autographed. As many are live images and backstage ones it might’ve been a tour or series of live shows in Germany around that era. A festival seems possible. Any thoughts on how I might ascertain provenance and get more details on which shows they were from?
Hello, I'm a drummer trying to learn piano. I know theory, I know what I can play in some harmony but i don't really know how to make it really sound like something. If you tell me to play something over just one chord it will sound like.... bad. Any tips?
I came across this unopened cassette tape today does it have any collectors value?
We made up this little shedding in the snow arrangement. Happy holidays y’all!
I’ve been trying to become a better improviser, and I decided that I should probably focus on swing for a good foundation before I start venturing into bop and stuff like that, but I don’t know where to start. Like when I listen to bird I can tell he’s outlining chords, but I can’t tell what Lester Young or Johnny Hodges are doing. Are they just thinking in terms of the key and the song’s melody, and then using their ears to know when to play notes outside of it? I have no idea and would really appreciate it if someone could explain it to me. Thanks in advance
Today's revelation that Spotify is undercutting it's Jazz artists by paying scabs to record and post knock offs so they can pad their coffers with their garbage songs instead of having to pay actual artists, writers, copyright holders, etc., I therefore cannot, with good conscience, continue to upload my weekly "actual human curated" playlists. I've been halfway out the door since before "meathead Rogain" blew up but I couldn't find a cost effective way to proceed. Well now, regardless of a new streaming source, I'm pulling the plug. Thanks to all who put up with my self promoting interloping (I tried to be careful to not overstep good taste/moderation). Mostly, I'm just very thankful for those who actually tuned in and listened. I'll leave all the shows up til new year but then I'll be stripping them all bare before I pull the plug.
So, once again, enjoy the Holidays. Hope everyone will be safe. Cheers & thanks for listening!

Dec 21st for the 9:30pm set for anyone that is NYC right now. I am not able to make it because my flight keeps getting delayed due to bad weather. Table seating will sell them for $100 each, it’s first come first serve for seating
I'm very new to jazz, and not knowing much, I mistakenly thought of jazz as having brass instruments. What makes this song "jazz"?
What is it about jazz that draws you in? Why are you interested in it? Playing it? Listening to it? Share your thoughts. For me, it creates a sonic world where anything can happen, life is beautiful and... it's just warm and inviting, even the harder stuff. What is it for you?
My way of introduction to Louis Smith was via George Cables. Have 5 or 6 of his SteepleChase releases and love them all
is funk jazz? my friend says while it contains many elements of jazz, funk is not jazz.
meanwhile I believe if it has any sort of element of jazz, it's jazz.
like if you take the jazz elements out of funk, is it still funk?
I know they are 2 separate things, but to me funk is still jazz
Recently I have absolutely fallen in love with the spiritual jazz sub genre and I need more of it!
Artists i have traversed so far are
Nala Sinephro
Alice Coltrane
Pharoah Sanders
Please hit me with some good recommendations!
I had a gig and I was wondering if its against the rules to post a youtube link to it and ask for feedback? Theres a rule about asking for advice buts it vaguely worded
