Hello everyone! I was hoping to get some advice/clarity on some keyboard options I am interested in. My old keyboard from high school has what seems to be 1/4 of the keys not working properly so it’s time for an upgrade.
I’m looking for a keyboard with great action and great acoustic/electric piano sounds so that I can practice/casually play as a hobby without having to open up a VST on my computer. This keyboard should also be able to record midi on Ableton in a studio setting as I compose an assortment of genres small time for some theater performances. I also make electronic funk music and hope to perform it live someday. So, ideally, I’m in the market for a nice stage piano that can also record midi. My budget is 3k or less but am open to more if swayed.
The top contenders that I have on my radar are the Yamaha CP88 and the Roland RD-2000 EX. From what I understand, the CP88 is more geared toward live sound with great action and sounds, but I am not sure how well/easily it can record midi. The RD-2000 EX version is newer than the RD-2000 and is overall better at the midi controller aspect but I have heard mixed reviews on the regular versions action and sound compared to the CP88.
My questions are can the CP88 be used as a midi controller for Ableton including its pitch shifters and knobs? How does the new version of RD-2000 EX compare to the regular? What should I get, essentially?
Some other ones I had in mind are the Kawai MP7SE which is older but still great I hear. I also was looking at some workstations like the Fantom 08 or the MODX8. Though these seemed redundant since I already have some nice plug ins on my computer and a Prophet 6.
Thank you!!
I've seen a few videos about these keyboards. I cannot really work out if the akai would be a better choice or not than the traditional workstations at this price range. Any views?
Criteria: best quality piano and epiano sounds Playable synth style keybed Lots of great synth sound options
Thoughts so far: Modx likely best 'acoustic' sounds Fantom 0 - best controls for live perf Akai - great multitouch screen, poorer (shorter keys) keys, glitch software and takes while to switch between sounds
Please share your experience of numa compact x se. It seems really good in that price point
I have an old Casio LK-30 electric keyboard that I would like to gift to my niece for Christmas. Everything on the keyboard still works except when I turn it on I’m getting annoying feedback on the speakers. This keyboard might be 15 years old. Any suggestions? Could it just need a new cord?
I am thinking of buying the Roland Go Keys 5. I plan on connecting a mic to it. I wish to then video record my singing and piano playing on my phone.
But instead of using the phone's mic to record my piano playing and singing, I want to connect my phone with the go keys 5 via a cable while this video recording is happening, so that i get very high quality audio which is synced to the video.
Is it possible to connect the go keys 5 to a phone and record the video, piano and mic simultaneously? Thanks
I have the abive stated keyboard and would like to play a song meant for piano, but the octave is too low, and i cant find anything online on how to change it, if its even possible. Ive also been fiddling with it for a while cant get anything done. Pls help
So, I started thinking the other day about all the keyboards I have bought and used since I started playing in bands in the early 70s. I wish I had had the foresight to hang on to most of them. Just for fun here’s the timeline, and the prices of a few that I recall.

Curious if other old timers have a list as well.
I’ve been using MainStage with varying levels of success for the last 10+ years. For the most part, I love it! But, there have been a few times that I’ve had some glitchy issues.
I do my patches from scratch and use third party vsts, my concert layout has a nano kontrol, 2 boards, and a patch list and some additional cc’s from one of the boards. I tend to make a patch for each song and alias that patch for different sections, I keep the channel strip pretty simple, while I have saved parameters on the nanokontrol doing cc controls inside omnisphere. Most of the time this works, but if I change things on the physical controller, it keeps the last used value instead of my selected saved value.
I’ve considered moving on to more powerful softwares like ableton, but it’s just been so overwhelming for me to leave something I already know pretty well. I’ve tried using ableton and had trouble just getting vsts to stay put when I close out and open the set back up.
My dream is to have something like the setup above, but honestly ableton feels big and scary to troubleshoot if something goes wrong on the gig. Anyone use Gig Performer? The wires scare me there too lol
Hello everyone! This year I picked up a Wurlitzer 120 electric piano for a steal and up until today, it had no issues other than the damper felts needing replaced (which I have).
My friend graciously built me a pedal for it, and the sustain mechanism itself works fine, but when the pedal is pressed down, the signal starts to pop, fizz, and distort. Not really sure why this is happening, and it is from like 1959, but I would love some help with this!
I have a very weird problem with my Studiologic Numa X GT. [Which I just love BTW]. It showed itself when playing Keith Jarret's "Lucky Southern". Where a specific note combination will result in one note not playing.
If I play the following notes, the top note will only play about 1/10'th of the time.
The notes are (bottom to top) D1,Bb1, F#2, D3 [the numbers are the midi octave numbers].
Changing any note in the chord, or not playing any one note, the problem goes away.
It is the D3 that fails to play.
Any other Numa X GT players out there that can try this to see if you have the same problem?
Thanks!

Hey all!
I'm really interested in learning piano and would like to get my first new beginner keyboard. Which brand and product would you guys suggest I get for the best value for money?
After watching tons of Youtube videos, I felt Yamaha to be a better option as compared to Casio as the piano tone is way better as said by a lot of people. Is it true?
I also was planning to get a Yamaha PSR E483 when it comes out but have been waiting for a long time for it to come out and it still hasn't come out yet. What do you guys suggest I get? Should I wait for it to come out or should I get the older E473 or should I get the newer E383 instead?
I wanted to use this keyboard for any live performances(require better portability and features) and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon. I also need the best piano sound out there.
Thank you!
Would appreciate any advice on this but I have just bought a secondhand Numa X 73 key and I'm trying to get the inputs to work and no sound is coming out. Can't seem to get the inputs to even pick up a signal as far as I can see. Any help would be appreciated
Hey, I'm looking to buy a keyboard. I like the look of the 75% keyboard because I need the function keys and I now how to build custom keyboard keycaps isn't the problom i can buy keycapsfrom aliexpressor something. I have 300$ to spend Can anyone share their experience to help me chose?
Hi everyone,
Looking to get a lovely keyboard with great organ and piano sounds, while also having a good keybed. From what I see online I can get the rolands for around 300-400 euros and the Nord for around 650/700. The 09 looks great in terms of versatility, but lacks a waterfall keybed. The 760 seems to get worse sounds compared to the 700, according to some videos and blogs. The Nord is perfect for sounds and gets the option for rotary foot switch next to a sustain. Though is less available and doesnt provide the same workstation options.
Any advice/ experiences that can help me?
Thx!
I recently saw someone place a guitar pickup under a bicycle wheel. When the wheel spins, the spokes create a hum through the pickup. I tried it and it is a lot of fun, especially through a ton of effects.
Does anyone know if there is a Keyboard out there that I can plug this pickup into so that I can change the pitch of the hum with the keys? That's really the only thing I need it to do.
I have a Casio LK-160, but I don't think this is an option.
Hey all, going to start gigging again after a long hiatus. Have a Kronos X workstation in the home studio but not interested at all in carrying that thing around. Leaning towards incorporating a MacBook Air for lots of VST sound availability and Mainstage for patch/song controls. Tried the Kross 2 61 cause it would be so easy to lug but that synth action is just too tough to get used to. Need at least semi-weighted keybed. Considering the Kross 2 88 but can't find it anywhere to actually try it. Budget is a concern at this point - under $1500. Any solid recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Most 73 key keyboards go from E1 to E7, but the Korg Krome EX and Nautilus 73 come out as a C1-C7 layout. What's the reason?
I have a Studiologic SL Studio but I dont like the feel of the keys at all. They are a little to stiff for me, and honestly feel a little cheap.
I am comparing the feel to a 3000 dollar digital Yamaha piano that I my friend has, which of course is not fair.
But if I want to reach that quality, but dont need the internal sound, speakers etc, only the midi controller functionality, is the next step up Kawai VPC1 or is there something cheaper ?
My son currently has the Williams Legato (I) that we originally bought when he was small and first learning piano. Now he is in high school, loves to play (mostly video game music these days), and wants to start a youtube channel/record his music. He has access to a CK88 in the music room which he has spoken highly about, but I don't think he's truly had a chance to sit down and put it through its paces.
Today we went to a local music store and the owner had a Yamaha DGX-670 that he usually recommends to people and they are happy with it. My son enjoyed playing it, liked the sound over the CK88 (which makes sense considering the CK88 is expected to be plugged into an amp/PA system) and liked the extra beats/tracks and the menu. Obviously it's the more budget friendly buy since it's roughly half the cost of the CK88, but as someone who knows nothing about these things, I was wondering, if we would be willing to spend the cash on either, which makes more sense as the better buy? I know sometimes "flashy/gimmicky" fluff will be added to lower priced items to make them seem better, but I didn't know if that is the case here?
Currently, he plays mostly at home but sometimes we drag a battery and amp out to the local coastal town and he busks for a couple of hours. He is ok with keeping his current keyboard for this purpose and having a stationary keyboard at home. He arranges some of his own music, and will be starting to compose original work this year in his Music Theory class. He'd like to digitize his playing/record himself playing for a youtube channel partially as a project to submit to colleges as a sort of extracurricular activity. He sometimes plays with the speakers and sometimes likes to wear headphones. He's not planning to major in music, but as he's been playing for over 10 years, I thought an upgrade might be in order.
Are there certain things regarding plugging into the computer/other electronics we should keep in mind if we get one over the other? This will likely be the last keyboard we purchase for him and we are hoping it carries him through several years until he can get one of the $$$$ ones when he has a grown-up job to afford it. If you've read this far, thank you and I appreciate your insight.
I am in need of buying a keyboard, and i cant decide between these two, the psr 1500 (grey one) is do one i like more, because it has a modulation wheel, sounds that i like more, and more options, and also, i LOOOVE 2000's aesthethics so i love this keyboard and its design, but im concerned by how old it is (20 years) so im not quite sure if it is bettere than a yamaha psr e 473 (the black one) also i dont know these keyboards well enough to trust myself with this decision, i ask you, wich do you reccomend more? Wich has more function, better sound quality, or is generally better for a beginner, also if anyone has any information on the psr 1500 please tell me because its hard to find online, i can only find videos about the psr 2000/3000 wich are quite similar but not the same. I know that the psr 1500 is very old but it was very very expensive when it came out so i dont know how it holds up, thanks to everyone who will comment!
I bought a Korg SV2 a few years back and absolutely love it, but am coming to terms with the fact that it is simply too heavy for me to transport for gigging, as I used to drive and now just use public transportation. I am looking for recommendations of a keyboard that is solid, sounds great, and is easier to carry. I play with 73 keys right now and it is plenty, so something in that size range is ideal.
I primarily use Rhodes/Wurlitzer tones, though I'm looking for solid acoustic piano and organ tones as well.
Would love to hear some recommendations, thanks!
Hi I have a 2010 Ford Territory TS.Long story but at this stage I have no key for it and the council have given me 1 week to move it.Im in Melbourne and im hoping there's a cheaper version than going to Ford and paying $680....thankyou for any replies
I recently got the Yamaha Reface CP and I love it. I play it probably 5 days a week.
I’m going to be traveling with it and I’m looking for a tiny amp or Bluetooth speaker that is loud enough to keep up with a couple of acoustic guitars in a jam, but still small enough to fit in a backpack. I’m thinking of the Spark Go or Spark mini, because they bill themselves as guitar and bass amps, meaning they are designed to handle some low end. They are around $100 and $200 respectively.
However, at this price point, you can find plenty of high quality Bluetooth speakers. So if there’s one with an aux in, that might be as good or better for the price. What do I do?!?!
I've just acquired a Pianet T and have been testing it out. The low notes have an issue - there is a delay between me hitting the key and the note actually sounding - like a sort of analog latency. If I press the key a few times the note plays like normal, but every time I go back to a key I've not played in a few seconds the "latency" happens again. Can anybody shed some light on what's happening here and how I can fix it?
Curious
Hello! I recently bought a Studiologic SL88 and I'm looking for the best supported DAW for it.I mean liveplaying. I read that FL lacks aftertouch and I noticed that there is no specific midi option for the instrument, only generic. Is there any DAW that has full support of our Studiologic?
I am really intrested in buying this keyboard, but there is just one doubt in my mind, does the keyboard have church organ sound? If someone has it or knows it i would be gratefoul
