Strapping Young Lad was my introduction to Devin Townsend. The first song I heard was All Hail the New Flesh and I was blown away. It was so unbelievably heavy but also quite melodic and just all around completely different from any other metal band I had ever heard. City and Alien are still industrial metal masterpieces as far as I'm concerned.
From there I went into Townsend's solo stuff and quite frankly didn't enjoy it all. It's just so damn cheesy. It's like metal for dorky theater kids or something. The talent of Townsend's musical abilities are still there but musically speaking it's just not my thing at all.
Anyone else feel the same?
Grammy Award winning prog metal act Gojira?
I usually don't care about award shows and I'm sure most of you don't either. It's just so fucking awesome to see them get the recognition and success they deserve.
Prog metal is moving up in the world.
This may be a loose fit here but I heard it again after a long time - it used to be on my dad's tapes growing up - and got progressive vibes and it made sense how if I loved it back then, then of course I'd be into the music I am now. A 7 minute heavy song with raspy vocals with an atmospheric section in the middle feels a lot like rush too. Hopefully you enjoy this one
A band that I slept on for too long.
New album out now
Looking for epic prog metal songs that are super melodic, even poppy at times, and have a lot of emotion ,almost like ballads, and still have that epicness. I hope this makes sense lol.
A peculiar Prog Metal piece wit
Out of the 30+ albums he's made that I've listened to way too many times to count, he somehow makes basically every song have a point and direction. Even in the craziest of albums like Empath, deconstruction, Infinity, City, etc. There's always a precise point with anticipation, release, etc. It's really impressive and a lot of prog metal kind of beats around the bush for too long which I'm sometimes in the mood for, but the older I get the more I crave abstract music with a direction.
So yes im a nerd, and I really want to write a concept album or at least a concept ep. I already have the story of the album (it’s not that deep of a story mostly just nerdy). How should I go about writing the actual music. Should I make some main themes first or should I make an outline of how many songs there will be and what they should be about???
Thank you
I'm very much a metal noob who got into the genre only 3 years ago. Only recently started to get into male-fronted ones and I'm still mostly limited to bands that are not that old. Rarely founded before 1995.
My current tastes include bands that are neither too mainstream nor too extreme. To make it clearer, I adore Nightwish, Jinjer, Epica, Within Temptation, Seven Spires, Nervosa, Arch Enemy, Ignea, Eluveitie, Fleshgod Apocalypse and stuff like that.
I guess that the only hint of what prog is that I heard is Dream Theater and I guess Gojira (which I'm trying to know better) and I think I'm missing out because prog musicians are apparently some of the best according to metal subreddits and I don't know where to start.
There's Opeth, but apparently, they went by totally different direction that's barely metal anymore if at all. But he's seen as one of the biggest geniuses.
I mostly need to know what prog is since the descriptions I've heard are too unclear to me and I need very simplistic explanations because my knowledge of music theory is nonexistent.
Loved this album, probably one of my favorite songs off of it and the use of pulse-preserving tactus modulations at the end is fantastic!
I was quite confident in saying The Freeze by Wheel is my song of the year 2024, but after I revisited Charcoal Grace today, I have to take back my claim. Mute totally crushed me.
Don’t know why this album is so underrated, it’s truly great
Been vibing out to some drum covers that change up the beats in popular songs to a half time feel. It got me thinking what prog (or metal in general) songs might have a prominent half time feel to them.
The only one I can think of right now Is Embrace the World - Gojira, but my creative juices aren’t really flowing right now.
