Just a reminder for people to check your tires. A lot of people were driving all over the place this morning with barely any snow on the roads. I'm a dealership tech and see these common issues all the time and recommend checking.
- If you have summer tires I recommend getting winters or all seasons. Summer tires are going to be hard like a hockey puck and not perform at all in the colder temps and snow. Summer tires are "soft" and are meant for hot roads. (Most dealerships will price match tires and will store your summer tires for around $50 if you don't have space)
- Check your tire pressures. A majority of vehicles have the recommended tire pressures on the inside of the driver side door jam below the door latch. For example fronts-32psi rears-36psi. If you don't have this sticker, just google your vehicles tire pressures. I get customers all the time with their tires well below the recommended. So double check.
- Check your tread depth. Every tire has bare minimum bars between the tread pattern. If you are close or riding on top of these bars your tires need replaced as they are at 4/32s or lower with remaining tread depth and will provide little traction in snow/slush conditions.
You can also do the Penny trick and put Abe Lincolns' head between the tread.
-Red zone (REPLACE) is the top of his head.
-Yellow Zone (recommend replacing soon) is on his forehead.
-Green Zone (Good tread life.) eye level.
- Check your tires alignment, if the outside/inside of your tire tread is smooth/bald it's to late and you need those replaced. They will not handle well in the snow or wet conditions. I see this all the time
New to Des Moines… looking to get a men’s Korean perm. Any suggestions in town?
This is my first winter in Des Moines and our house has a pretty steep driveway. Any tips on managing clearing the driveway when it snows and gets icy? Our cars thankfully have AWD so traction getting up and down the driveway should hopefully be good. We’ve also got a stash of salt ready but looking for any other tips y’all might have. TIA
im new to the area and also a student with no money so the cheapest recs the better
112 accidents? Really on an inch of snow!?

TLDR, Apartment Neighbor locks themselves on Balcony twice wakes me up to help them, now they are a lil pissy cause I don't acknowledge in passing.
So I live on the top floor of my building and we have balconies. My unit and the one adjacent to me are in arms length. I work from home and I let my kitties out on their balcony to sunbath and just do kitty things and I am thankful they are chill are have no desire to jump. Recently got a new neighbor in the unit next to me, I can smell he's a smoker as he steps out on the balcony to do so. It's a smoke free building it's state in our lease but honestly I am the type of person that if you leave me be I don't fuck with you.
So one night I am sleeping and awoken to the sound of knocking, I have no reason for anyone to be visiting me at this hour of night so Ignore it, again knocking! I get up pretty annoyed and go check my door and no one is there. Get ready to crawl back into bed when I hear it again! Clearly coming from my balcony! Grab the ol boom stick and proceed to open my blinds no one is there! Then a hand comes and slaps my sliding door again. It's the new neighbor! I stow the shotty and open the door to see what's what. He tells me He locked himself out of his unit. I asked him if he had his phone on him or his keys, nope. I ask if he's door is unlocked to his unit, nope. So I tell him I'll call emergency maintenance as we had both decided it wasn't a good idea to call 911.They of course don't pick up.
I don't know this person and given he doesn't have his keys or phone and his unit is locked I am not going to offer to have them climb over and walk through my unit. I offer him a camping chair my hammock and and thermal quilt for the night and let him know I'll check on him in the morning and get the front desk when they arrive.
Next morning I wake up and check on the individual. Front desk isn't in yet, I get my quilt and hammock back, but they want to keep the chair until someone comes and gets them out. I can understand that but I also got from their tone and inflection they wanted it as leverage to ensure I called the front desk. Also got tge vibe they didn't believe I called emergency maintenance. At this point I just want get this person on there way as I have work to do! Front desk finally opens and I give them a ring and they get him off his balcony and I get my chair back and on with my day.
Few days pass and again I am awoken in the middle of the night with knocking on my balcony. I am pretty fucking annoyed at this point as over the past few days I have smelled the cigs he smokes wafting over while I have my slider open for my kitties to use their catio. I go out and ask them what's up and again they are locked out. I ask why they didn't ask the front desk when they first came to get them about fixing their slider, no answer.Again I ask about their phone, keys, and unit being unlocked. Same as last time. They ask me to go down to the lobby as they had seen emergency numbers posted, not evening think about it I go down and find the numbers... they are the same numbers I have in my phone already. I come back up with the numbers and ask them what they would like me to do now as they are the same numbers I already have in my phone. They ask me to contact emergency maintenance again which I call and put on speaker so they can hear it go straight to voicemail. I offer the camping items again and they say no they are not staying out on their balcony again. They proceed to dance around climbing over and go through my unit to which I tell them what good will that do, you don't have your phone, keys and your front door is locked. You're just going to roam the halls of our complex cause your not crashing in my place. They say maybe they will just climb down, this individual is not in good shape from their looks and I advise that's probably not the best idea but you do you.
We eventually land on calling 911. I end up calling non emergency and the fire department shows up as they have master keys to our building and get the individual off their balcony. They apologies profusely and honestly I am super annoyed that this point. I tell them maybe they should not be out smoking cigs as it's not permitted in the units or balconies and to get their door fixed. They clap back with how they smell weed in the building, which yeah I do as well but none of those individuals have woken me up twice because of it.
Now everytime I see this individual in passing they try to say hi to me and Honestly I never want to know this person from the get go and definitely don't want to after dealing with them twice. So I ignore them and they are clearly butt hurt about it.
So weird question, but I'm working on some stuff and you know what's cooler than 18650 batteries? Free 18650 batteries!
Anybody know if there's a source where I can get free (or hella cheap) 18650 batteries locally? Really, other form factor lipo would work but 18650 is probably ideal.
First day of snow here in Iowa for me. Moved to this state about 2 weeks ago... is the static in homes always this bad in the winter? I've never experienced it this frequently before moving here. My bedding and all clothes are 100% cotton or wool, I don't use anything polyester (I'm not using dryer sheets because of health hazards) - What can help with that? Is it the plastic carpet in my apartment (which I can't change)? Do you all have humidifiers? Maybe the slippers I'm wearing? It's ridiculous how much I'm getting shocked today 🫠🫱 ⚡️✨️

Former employees of the metro's largest towing company, Crow Tow, alleged in court documents of a recently settled case and interviews that some tow truck drivers are being incentivized to push ethical boundaries and exploit unsuspecting motorists in private lots through the company's bonus structure.
The details of Crow Tow's incentives are outlined in hundreds of documents stemming from a 2022 lawsuit against the company that alleged widespread abuses in the metro's towing industry.
Its drivers prioritize "nonconsensual" tows from private lots because they provide larger bonuses, according to former driver Brandon Fredericksen.
Emphasis mine. I really hope that something comes of this.
Looking for a good, reasonable mechanic. I just bought a car off Carvana and have seven days to identify any issues so I'd like someone who could give me a good assessment.
That is all.
Edit: I imagine it's better now, it looks like some trucks have been out with salt. ❤️ to those who thought I was trying to gaslight you because it was only a dusting (ice is a thing that exists).
I am not able to find the tires I want in stores and I want to purchase them online. Never done that before, any recommendations for places to have them installed in Des Moines? Is it an odd thing to ask? Thank you!
Fuck you.
Where can I find a tremendous Cuban sandwich in Des Moines?

Currently live in the Pacific Northwest. My wife is an attorney and I am a Carpenter Foreman. We’re looking to move to a place with more like minded people, and to be closer to family. We are an interracial couple, she is worried about how we would be treated. Is there a decent sized Black community in the area? How accepting are people of interracial couples and finally, how is the economy looking there? Are you seeing growth?
Thank you all for your responses.
There have been several posts on the Ring app of the same person stealing packages off their porch in the Merle hay area. 3 in the last hour and 1 yesterday all appear to be the same person

Does anyone know why Señor Tequila closed? It's located on SE 14th next to Planet Fitness. Google says it is permanently closed and the website no longer exists. They haven't posted on social media since October, so I'm assuming this was sudden.
Anyone have recommendations for a limousine company in town?
They might be struggling for numbers, but it’s always exceptionally clean and well maintained! Shout out to Valley West!
what’s your go to?
I'm a new widower, I'm new here and looking to make friends. I'm not for dating or bars or that sort.
Something along the lines of a coffeshop type hangout or honestly anything that has random people interested and willing to shoot the breeze.
I'm in my mid 40s, fairly apolitical but lean more towards democrat. My step grandson helped me move here and he's leaving when my stepdaughter comes to visit for Christmas and then they go back home.
After that, I'm pretty much free 24/7 I'm looking at starting school and just starting over but I when I visit for orientation, I realized how much older I am than everyone and I just think I can't relate very well.
I have an adult prom that I am going to in February thats 80s themed and I would really like an authentic 80s dress! Anyone know where I can get one. I am interested in Loralie brand style or similar dresses! Figured it was worth a shot to ask!
May be kind of a long shot, but I was hoping to get some sort of merch from Mars Cafe as a gift for the holidays. The coffee shop holds a lot of significance and I’d love to get a mug, or sweatshirt, etc. Does anyone know if they still sell merch and if so, would anyone be kind enough to ship it to me? I’ve since moved out of the area so it’s obviously difficult to sneak 4 hours away to drive to Des Moines. I’d pay for the item, shipping, and extra for the favor. Thanks in advance!
I'm looking for recommendations for therapists or behavioral health specialists in the area who are welcoming and affirming of the LGBT+ community. A close family member is struggling with depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. They’re already seeing an awesome psychiatrist who’s been super responsive and helpful with meds and treatments, but I’d really like to find someone they can talk to about their emotions and work through things on a deeper level.
If you know of any compassionate, experienced professionals who might be a good fit, I'd really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks so much!
Just going off the upvotes from the Thankful post earlier this week. Let's See them Des Moines Kitties.
