Rules

For the most part, only the usual laws of Reddiquette apply. Basically, don't be a dick, and we should all be hunky-dory. There are two rules we're now actively enforcing:

  1. Don't link to the Daily Mail - not a thing that tends to happen, but now we've got official rules, I'm making it official.
  2. Linking to personal projects is now restricted to once a month, to avoid the subreddit filling up with very similar posts.

About Bucks

Buckinghamshire (/ˈbʌkɪŋəmʃər/ or /ˈbʌkɪŋəmʃɪər/; archaically the County of Buckingham; abbreviated Bucks) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan home county in South East England.

The county town is Aylesbury, the largest town in the ceremonial county is Milton Keynes and largest town in the non-metropolitan county is High Wycombe.

Aylesbury tips

Hello! I'm moving to the Aylesbury area soon and this will be a new area for my partner and me. I'm curious to know what events and places of interest people can recommend in the area. I'm a fan of pub quizzes, comedy, theatre, countryside walks, museums, running, art, crafts and quaint coffee shops. Also... what are the good pubs in town and nearby? If anyone can offer any wisdom it would be greatly appreciated:)

30th Infantry Division (US) - Second World War

In May and June 1944 the 30th Infantry Division (US) stayed at Hodgemoor Camp, Amersham, Buckinghamshire. I'm looking for more information on this.

I already found this page: https://www.amersham.org.uk/ww2/ , which states: "Around Amersham in Rectory and Pipers Woods and at Hodgemore army camps were set up. The camp at Pipers Wood was by occupied at various times by the King's Own Scottish Borderers and also by the Americans and was used after the war as a reception centre for returning prisoners of war. The camp at Hodgemore became the home to a large contingent of Polish servicemen. The camp remained in existence well into the 1950s with its own shop and post office."

But that's not an accurate description of the situation I think. The morning report below of one of the companies shows them at Hodgemoor Camp early June 1944, just before they were shipped to Europa to partake in the liberation of Europe.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Recs for Short term car hire

Hi everyone!

I've been living abroad for a few years now and am coming to aylesbury for xmas to see my family.

I'll only be there for 2 weeks so I'm trying to find an option for hiring a car but I'm having difficulty finding something which doesn't charge ridiculous fees for the Xmas period.

Can you hire cars per hour/day in England now? If not, can anyone offer a recommendation?

Also, a bonus question: does anyone know where I can find the timetable for public transport during the Xmas period?

Lived in Bucks for 5+ Years? Share Your Views on How It’s Changed - Dissertation research

Hello guys, i am currently doing some research for my dissertation on gentrification in commuter towns, i am looking in Buckinghamshire and mostly at Gerrads cross, High wycombe, Beaconsfield and Amersham. If anyone has either lived here for at least 5 years or is very familiar with these towns i would greatly appreciate if you could fill this form out. It is relatively simple and should only take a few minutes, just looking for very rough answers on your opinions of bucks and how it has/hasn't changed. It is all anonymous and any question can be skipped - Thank you!

Looking for Accommodation near the University of Buckingham for January Admittance. Would appreciate all the help or any tips!

Hey!

I’m an international student from Canada admitted for January at the University of Buckingham MD program, and I'm on the hunt for affordable housing options that are still close enough for convenient commuting. I’d really appreciate any tips or leads on housing that other students have had good experiences with... or if you could point me toward someone who might have some insights!

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can offer.

I'm making a Lord of the Rings style map of Buckinghamshire and welcome your help with historic or interesting locations around the area to include. Hoping to have it finished by the end of next week.

State secondaries with additional SEN provision

Planning a move back down south after many years away. Fortunately in a position where we can be somewhat flexible on location so am considering north & west Buckinghamshire (have a multitude of family in Oxford) so I’m asking for location / school recommendations suitable for families and any suggestions particularly from people whose children attend or have attended a mainstream state secondary school that has additional SEN provision. My child’s requirement probably doesn’t reach to a specialist school however one that offers strong academic outcomes would be considered. Am not hugely familiar with the area but have seen and liked houses in Buckingham and villages surrounding. TIA

Bucks Adult Learning Referral Help

Hi all, Bucks Adult Learning give discount to learners if a previous (or existing) learner refers a new learner. The previous or exisitng learner (that could be you) gets £50 to put towards a future adult learning course, the referee (me) gets 15% off a future course.

Unfortunately, I do not personally know anyone who has been on a adult leraning course but I hoped someone on this subreddit could help.

If you have done a course with adult learning and could help please DM me. All that would be required is to fill out a very short online form on the adult learning website (stating your name and when you did the course etc). Thanks.

Music scene(s)?

I’m a musician that’s just moved from St Albans nearby to Aylesbury.

What’s the music scene like!? I’m heavily involved in my hometowns scene, and during the week play at blues bars and cocktail bars across London.

I’m hoping to also find gigs nearby so I don’t have to commute so much back to Herts (did 2 hours driving today to hitchin).

Would love to hear what’s going on in and around the area.

Chesham: Opinion as a place to live

Planning to buy an house at Broad Street, Chesham. Collecting opinions before I make an offer.

We are working couple, no kids. We only visited the town once really liked the vibe overall. High street kind of felt less busy even though it was Saturday afternoon. Is it usual?

Is it safe? How is commute to kings cross? Is it hectic?
