Social and exercise groups

Hey! Does anyone know where I can find a list or website that lists some groups in Hertford? Me and my partner are keen to join something, be it a sports or exercise group or something else. Anyone got any ideas?

People that are in groups/ societies how often do you attend?

I recently joined a board game group but it is a week day so only go once a month as I have to be up early the next day for work. I also joined a walking group and try and go at least once a month. I know I should attend more and meet new people but I just am knackered from work

Waltham: is waltham good or bad place to live?

My husband and i are considering to move to waltham. Can any local dweller here give a good overview of the place? Hows it like to live there. Schools, connections to london and hospitals (foundation school hospitals for junior doctors)

Oatibix in Hertfordshire

Hello,

Has anyone seen the Oatibix (not Oatibix flakes) in stock anywhere in West or East Hertfordshire? I have a relative who can only eat this for breakfast but I haven't seen it in stock for a week or so.

Apologies for this extremely random request

Anyone know any homeless shelters that accept hand-knitted/crochet scarves and hats?

I crochet scarves and hats to keep my hands busy in the evenings, the pile of finished wearables is piling up in the spare room and I've run out of friends and family to gift them to. Other charities that accept hand-made goods are also great! My aunt volunteers in a charity shop and they don't take hand-made items.

Anyone like me?

I joined a couple of groups, the people seem nice but only socialise at the group. I would like to go to the pub or go to gigs etc but they don’t seem up for it

Bald nonce

Anyone in Hertfordshire remember this chap, the bald nonce. He lived in Letchworth iirc so I was just wondering if anyone had any stories about him or knew what became of him after the infamous sting?

5 aside teams

Does anyone know of any 5 aside Leagues or websites so that I could join a team as a ringer? None of my friends live in the area and travelling into London is quite the mission for 40mins on the pitch and would like to play like I used to. I'm early 30s if that helps.

Is Hertfordshire really South East?

It's officially East of England but apart from maybe Baldock and Royston I wouldn't class it as that, but South East? Hmmm, not sure. Maybe the more southern reaches of the county like Watford, Bushey, Borehamwood et al, but I'm not sure the rest is south enough. I've even seen Hertfordshire classed as South Midlands on things, but that doesn't feel right either.

What's your thoughts?

Is potter's bar bad for public transport?

Hi there I'm looking to do a homeswap to Hertfordshire and I've noticed a few people in Potters Bar. However I don't drive and have heard rumours that I'd feel very isolated there and lack job opportunities. Is this true? Many thanks

Proposal locations

Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone can recommend a place to propose to my girlfriend. She’s originally from Hertfordshire and grew up there but I don’t know much about it as I’m from London.

Ideally a hotel to stay at for the night that has a great dinner option. Leisure facilities like spa / wellbeing are ideal but not a dealbreaker.

She likes greenery, nature and starry skies. This would be soon so baring in mind the autumn/winter weather and sunset times. I’m happy to do it at the hotel location if they have a nice outdoor area, I’d bring electronic candles or fairy lights if the hotel would allow me to set up for that.

So any suggestions? Thank you :)

Charity/voluntary work over Christmas period in Herts

Hello,
I'm keen to volunteer on Christmas Day (or other days over the Christmas period) - maybe cooking, or serving food for people, or visiting people who would otherwise be on their own. Can anyone recommend any particular Herts-based charities that might suit? I'm in west Herts, but happy to consider anywhere relatively local.

Thinking of moving to Hemel (Gadebridge/Boxted Road)

Hi all

We have a compelling house purchase (private transaction) for a lovely detached 4/5 bedder in Hemel - off Boxted Road.

It's perfect but we're both from Zone 3 London and 30/31. So in the next few years we're looking at schools, safety, things to do.

I work from home 5 days a week and go into Liverpool Street very very infrequently, my other half goes into Old Street twice a week.

We've poked around and it seems nice. Any advice would be useful.

Groups for 30-40s

I am trying to join groups where there are people around my age. I know there is a walking group called stag but was wondering if there are any more. To explain a bit more about me, I am mid 30ish, single, male. I fallen out with my school mates, I tried to keep in touch but they never responded or it was just one way travel. Not nice when I saw on social meeting them meeting up without me

Advice on where to move

Hi, I’ve recently been appointed a great job in Luton and looking for where to live in the Hertfordshire area. I’ve been looking at Harpenden and Hitchin because of their reputations for great schools, but I don’t know if I’m missing other areas that I haven’t considered.

Our priorities are good state schools / grammar schools (we won’t be able to afford fee paying), multicultural and lively town centre and slightly worried about flood risks for the future. Has anyone got any better insight?

Welwyn Garden City to live?

We currently live in Hitchin renting and are looking at properties either shared ownership or outright. We are currently in a flat with a toddler which we don’t mind. We’d be looking at either flats or house with a garden.

We love Hitchin but can’t afford to buy here, next on our list is Welwyn Garden City or Biggleswade (granted it is Bedfordshire) Is there any places to avoid? Is it a nice place to live?

Thanks in advance😊

University of Hertfordshire

Hi! I plan on going to university in the UK next year to study either illustration or comic & concept art.
Uni of Hert was one of my options on my list of unis and I was curious about what it's like there to those who have studied there, whether it be one of the courses I plan on doing or something else. I'm very interested about hearing of people's experiences and what the facilities and faculty are like etc. as it'd be super helpful for me. :-)

What are the best food delivery restauraunts near South Hatfield?

Since moving here a few months ago, I've tried a couple of Chinese restauraunts, one fish and chip shop, one kebab restaurant, and obviously the Subway, Mcdonalds and KFC.

They're all great, though I was unimpressed by the 2 chinese restaurants I delivered from. That's why I'm genuinely curious what locals around Hatfield usually order from and are great restaurants on JustEat, UberEats, etc.

Edit* I'd also recommend Krave Hot Wings & peri peri

Looking into University of Hertfordshire for creative degree. Honest opinions?

Soo yeah, I'm in year 13 right now and am looking into attending Hertfordshire for a creative undergraduate degree. I'd like honest opinions about the University since the students on the website are most likely specifically chosen to say good things only.

Thanks!

EDIT 15/OCT/24

WELP, after reading your comments (and thank you for them by the way) I think it's safe to say uni of Herts will be a backup but not an aim. For context for anyone who may have more advice for me, I'm looking into Comic & Concept Art right now but that may change. Other areas Ive glanced at are Games Art and Animation.

Irish live band for a funeral?

Hi all, I am looking for someone to do a quick set at my sisters funeral!

My (33) sister (39) died suddenly a week and a half ago, she was a beautiful soul, but we all say that don’t we!

She was also my best friend, we would talk about stuff, and we always said we both wanted a big Irish send off! We would always have the most fond memories of our grandparents dos and funerals where my dad and my uncle would play their accordions! My dad is sadly no longer here and my uncle is too sick to come, but I’d love to try and bring that vibe to my sweet sisters funeral.

I’ve looked at Irish bands but I just can’t afford the costs they charge, and I’m also not wanting to be someone who belittles someone’s art and talent.

I am just putting feelers out to see if anyone local would be willing to bless us at all for as short or as long as they are willing to, ideally some Pogues songs as they were our favourite !

She died suddenly and left 5 kids under 13 so I don’t have much money I can spare, but I am asking if anyone can provide me quotes, or if they happy for me to pay travel?

I’m so not wanting to insult anyone, I’m so happy for the answer to be ‘no’ but I’m just putting it out there to see what I can do, and if anyone is able to help.

Thank you so much, even if that answer is no 🩷
