Hello! This may be a long shot but I’m trying to figure out where my family lived. It was somewhere in Yorkshire (so that narrows it down slightly).

I asked my parents where, but they can’t remember which town it was, seen as it was when I was a young kid when we last went; and I’m almost forty now.

The only thing I remember about the visit is my relatives told me the church me and my dad were going to walk past later on was haunted. There was a kind of passageway next to the graveyard and apparently the tree in the passage was haunted by a boy. He used to trip passersby. I remember being scared to walk past it incase I got tripped. I’m sure it had a nickname. The other thing I remember is the church had big wooden doors with a knocker, because my dad banged it. Does anyone know about this “local legend” or the church?

It’s probably the legend from 100 different towns, but it may actually be something someone here would know… and it’s all I’ve got to go on…

So I'm planning to stay for 2/3 months in the Uk, and I definitely want to make one of my bases in Yorkshire.

I won't have a car, so I need to stay where there are good public transportation links. I'm looking for towns/villages that have good pubs, cream teas, market (or not far), a good community, and well located....

Nothing is definite, but I'm looking at Skipton or Knaresborough.

Thoughts as to which makes a better base? I do love that Skipton is near Bolton Abbey... and I love that both are not far from York.

Also, I'm thinking of doing some day trips (Dales, Lake District) and most of them leave from York. I'm thinking that in order to avoid night train travel, especially when I'm tired after a long day, it might make sense to stay overnight in York before the tour, then spend the night of the tour also in York & return home the next day. Of course it means the expense of extra hotel nights when I'm already paying for my accommodations.

Does this make any sense? I feel like there should be better options that I'm not thinking of, especially the tours of the Dales.

I think with the Lake District, I could take the train (transfers) to Windermere and spend a night or two there ...

Me and my partner are wanting to find a farm shop this weekend we can get a steak pie and would love to see some highland cows there. I’ve already spotted cannon hall farm online but was wondering if there’s any smaller hidden gems?

My husband and I are seriously considering a move to Yorkshire and would love some help narrowing down some areas to visit.

We are both secondary school teachers and have a young child who is currently attending nursery. We work in the South of England but live in a particularly expensive area and have no real ties keeping us here apart from our jobs.

We are thinking of moving to Yorkshire to be closer to family as well as for the cheaper house prices. Teaching salaries remain the same across the UK (bar London) so it should mean we are able to afford a better standard of living. We have visited York and North Yorkshire in the past but there is obviously a big difference to visiting somewhere and living there. Our main priority is making sure our child has the best quality of life possible.

Ideally, we would live in a rural village that has a local primary school. We would like to be near to a nice town to visit for shopping/ parks/ amenities/ train stations. As we both need secondary teaching jobs, we would need to move to an area that has a range of good schools. We enjoy walks and eating out.

We would like to visit some places to get a bit of a better feel for the area. I am currently thinking the villages and towns to the North/ North West of York (such as near Knaresborough or Thirsk) would be a good place to start but would really appreciate any recommendations you have. Thank you!

Hello! I'm British but Ive been based overseas for almost 20 years. When I'm in the UK I love old man pubs, walks, charity shops, cafes, local food etc.

I've booked a short break next month: one night in Boggle Hole and one night in York. All using public transport. This is my rough plan:

Day 1: am train to Scarborough. Anything to see or do there? I'll want a coffee at least. Bus to Robin Hoods Bay, mooch around there. Are there supermarkets there or should I stock up in Scarborough? (Staying in a hostel with a kitchen plus I want packed lunch things/snacks)

Day 2: coastal walk from boggle Hole to Whitby. Ive been to Whitby before and will be perfectly happy pottering around the shops and maybe having lunch at the magpie. Is there anywhere I could leave my bag so I don't have to carry it round all day?

Coastliner bus to York. I know it takes ages and I don't really mind.

Stay in York that evening, find a nice pub to spend some time at.

Day 3: nothing is fixed but I have a train home in the evening from Harrogate, so I'll need to get there (is bus or train best?) I've been to York before but it was during the pandemic so almost everything was closed. Id like to go to the railway museum and the tap pub in the station.

Hello Yorkshire! I'm looking for some potential wedding venues in Yorkshire. My partner is from the Sheffield area and I’m an American - we currently live abroad. We recently had a small ceremony abroad for logistic reasons, but are looking for a place to host family and friends who couldn’t make the ceremony.

Do you know any great and reasonable potential wedding venues in Yorkshire, for about 100 people? We'd love somewhere with some countryside. We’ve been looking at places like Whitley Hall, Woodman Inn, and the Coniston Hotel - we are open to other ideas!

I have an event coming up and the theme is Yorkshire for the costumes. Other than a flat cap I am at a loss for ideas for me and the wife. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated

I’m helping my mum look for a spot to live. I’m already based in Yorkshire in Tod, but am relatively new so am still exploring. A couple of her new colleagues have recommended Queensbury. What’s it like? She’s in her early 60s and is keen for a place with a community feel, especially after dad died. She works in Halifax.

Her biggest concern is that she’s been told Queensbury has a factory that smells very bad in the summer…is that true?

Just eager to help her out as much as possible so advice and insights would be appreciated! Also open to suggestions of other places within 45mins of Tod - she’d love Mytholmroyd but it’s too expensive.

It's been 24 years since I moved from Halifax to Melbourne, Australia and although I've revisited Yorkshire about 4 times since, my love for the county never ever goes. I wanted to know how people visit this Sub are permanently overseas and visit this for their Yorkshire fix and where in the world are they.

Looking down the valley near Esholt

We stopped off in Bridlington on our way to our destination on our first trip to Yorkshire. Early evening around the pubs and clubs and arcades as we walk the front and used up our pennies in the arcades.

Literally every bloke and every woman looked like cookie cutter copies of every other couple.

The middle-aged men in their Harrington style jackets of all different patterns, plain or colours, were everywhere. Some more casual, sporting the same style jacket but with Union Jack or RAF/MoD patches. Most not though. The women, blue jeans, stilettos, a healthy tan and blonde hair. It was great, if not a little intimidating, like the early 80s all over again. Some were a little aggressive but we put it down to the Friday night fever. My teenage son got propositioned by someone which was a bit disappointing. Perhaps we stood out to them as just as much as they to us!

At first we thought there must have been an event on but remembered back to our drive in, as we got closer to the area we’d see an increasing number of mopeds, some in groups of 10.

It was quite an amusing sight. To us ‘outsiders’ everyone stood out as looking identical.

And I imagine we stood out as City Slickers 😂

I am interested to try and understand the culture locally. Google didn’t seem to have much and I thought someone local to the area would know.

I have a driving test in Barnsley and noticed the stretch of a638 that's 60 mph has temporary signs across some length of it for 40pmh. There isn't any sign to indicate end of the 40 speed when I drove past the last one so does that mean it's 40 the whole length of the road?
