Nachtbussen maken me gek

Does anyone know where this is?

This print hangs in our living room, a tribute to Omas heritage and a little part of who we are! We are finally heading to the the Netherlands and would love to get a photo on the bridge.

Seeking Jamie xx In Waves tour t-shirt -- will pay lots extra (Vancouver, BC)

Hey, fellow Jamie xx fans!

I went to the In Waves tour and had an absolutely transcendent experience—but while high on LSD, I convinced myself that spending $65 on a t-shirt was an unnecessary act of consumerism and that I should simply absorb the beauty of the night. Which I did. And it was incredible. The absolute best DJ set I've seen in my 20 years of experiencing live electronic music.

However, after coming down, I couldn't stop thinking about that black t-shirt with the tour dates on the back in a wave pattern—the one you can’t buy online. And I regret everything. It's been two weeks and I am spiralling.

If you’re going to the In Waves show on March 11 and wouldn’t mind picking up a t-shirt for me, I will pay you for your trouble and then some. I’ll also cover international shipping to Vancouver, BC. If you're someone who going to the venue early and is going to have a little bag or something, or doesn’t mind waiting at the merch stand (or grabbing one after the show), I would be eternally grateful.

Size: Small or medium preferably, but whatever is available

Colour: Black with the white rectangle on the front and the white lines with the tour dates on the back

If you can help, please message me privately.

30% ruling - broken promise

Hey fellow expats,

My 30% ruling has ended. I’ve been with the same employer the whole time.

When I was hired, the HR person said “we’re offering you €55,000 (lowest end of the salary range I have them) but you get the 30% ruling, so you’ll be taking home the same amount as your Dutch colleagues.”

I asked her if at the end of the 30% rule my salary would be adjusted to ensure I wouldn’t receive a decrease in salary and she said yes, my salary would be adjusted at that point.

I didn’t get it in writing as I didn’t think I’d still be at the same company by then, but here we are.

So it was a verbal comment/agreement, which seems to be binding in NL but difficult to enforce.

The HR person no longer works for the same employer as me.

Any tips on how to sort this out?

Seeking Others Who Experienced Harassment by a Well-Known Dutch Designer

Hello, I’m using a throwaway account for privacy reasons.

Years ago, I was harassed and overpowered by a well-known Dutch designer based in Amsterdam. I’ve since learned that I am not alone—several others have reportedly experienced similar behavior from him at different levels.

I am trying to connect with others who have been through this. If you were harassed by a tall, famous Dutch designer, please reach out via dm. You are not alone.

Stay safe, and thank you.

Where to watch the Super Bowl in Amsterdam?

Moved here a year ago, am a Chiefs fan, and not looking to repeat the lonely experience of watching it in my living room in the middle of the night this year. I see that Hard Rock Cafe and Café De Jonge Wees are hosting Super Bowl parties. Has anyone been to either before? Any other recommendations?

Are you aware of any written guideline describing the conditions of when and how a building becomes a monument?

Hello, I live in amsterdam and I need to change the windows. In the same situation the rest of the owners, including social housing corporation which holds 70% of the shares of the building.

The story is pretty complicated, and mostly done of incompetence and negligence. Some facts:

1958: The building is built. Windows had wooden frames (maybe, nobody actually knows) 1990: The corporation decides to change the windows with a completely different style from the original. Double glazed and frame in aluminium 2008: Creation of the VVE and relative actie van splitsing where it is reported that frame’s ownership is of the VVE 2018: The building becomes a monument. According to AMS municipality, every building with more that 60 years becomes a “monument” hence any change to the facade needs to follow certain aestethic criteria. However, nobody knows exactly which are these acceptance criteria. Specifically:

  • Should the exterior be the same of the original configuration in 1958 or at the time the monument become a monument in 2018?
  • Should the materials be the same of the original configuration in 1958 or the ones at the time the monument become a monument in 2018?

In the recent past a consultant made some evaluations: The job was pretty unprofessional and basically it was a “copy - paste” of what done in the adjacent block. At the time I was in the bestuur and I had to block the process because the stake was a work of 8 6 mil euro, plus heavy maintenance leading to VVE cost skyrocketing to 500 euro per month for the next 30 years. Note: The project was proposed to the competent office of the municipality and they had no problem to accept (not their money…)

A new bestuur of more competent people took care. The current bestuur is literally useless since they are “too busy” - so private owners (me and another guy) have to take care of the situation.

The corporation has no interest in challenging the current situation but they are very curious to know if I will be able to make the municipality change their mind.

So, dear community of Reddit, How would you suggest me to proceed? Is anybody else in the same situation?

The first thing I would like to ask is if you are aware of any written guideline describing how it is ruled the “transformation” from normal building to monument?

Bicycle recommendation

Hi people I am looking to buy a good second hand bike. I already bought an elops 520 city bike but a bike repair guy told me it was a bad deal so I will try to replace it.

I want to make an informed purchase this time, so my options are:

I am 170cm and will use the bike for a daily commute of 9km. I prefer the dammesfiets structure as it is easier to get on/off, but which one would you pick if they were the same price? Which one would be of better quality in your opinion?

Do you know this area?

Hi,

Thirty years ago, my mom took me with her on a business trip to Amsterdam and later Zurich. We first landed in Amsterdam, but due to jet lag, I was super sleepy and don't remember much. In contrast, I remember a lot about my time in Zurich.

This is the only picture I have with my mom that was taken in Amsterdam. I asked her where it was taken, but she couldn't remember, so I'm very curious to know where this is because in few years I plan to take my daughters to visit Amsterdam and Zurich and would like to visit the neighborhood I was in.

Thank you so much for any clue!

Looking for your funny Amsterdam stories for a book

Hi there,

I'm an artist from Amsterdam and I'm illustrating a book. It will be a lot of recognizable sights i Amsterdam with animals visiting them. I will add some finished prints here so you can see the vibe.

My idea for the text is to add some funny, happy and interesting stories from the people who live(d) here or just visiting. So if you'd like to share some short funny stories about things that you have experienced here, or what was most memorable for you. I would love to see if i can incorporate some of them in the book. It could be anything, from pigeons or seagulls trying to steal your food, to fun memories with your grandparents, kingsday, gaypride, (bak)fiets mishaps or boatride adventures. I would like them to be appropriate for kids too tho, so please keep that in mind. It can be Dutch or English, since i'm planning to publish in both anyway.

Thanks for reading, and possibly your help! Hope to be able to read some funny stories soon

More places to practise Dutch

Hello everyone! I moved to Amsterdam two years ago and I absolutely love the city and the freedom it gives me. I have been learning Dutch and can speak at A2 level, still struggle sometimes with fast speaking and the sentence structure. I am giving my inburgering exams and I am almost at the last leg. However I want to continue learning and being able to speak Dutch more fluently to be able to have a conversation beyond A2 Ofc. Also speaking in big groups don’t work for me much, because I am not an extrovert; so conversations between people tend to get concentrated between a few people inevitably. So I essentially need a 1-1 speaking partner. I think I can practise it better with kids, because adults don’t have patience for my Dutch. But I don’t know how to do it without sounding creepy. Is there any activity I can join with my level of Dutch to continue speaking or practising with others?

Thanks!

Interest in Queer Basketball Team?

I am wondering if there’s any other queer people in/around Amsterdam who would be interested in starting/joining a queer basketball team.

I used to play basketball as a teenager, but quit at 15 when I wanted to come out  since I’d heard several of my teammates make homophobic comments in the past. A big part of the reason that I’ve never gone back to basketball is because I am trans/non-binary and basketball (as most team sports) is very gendered.

I know that there is a gay/lgbtq basketball team in Amsterdam already, but I read on their website that the team primarily consists of (cisgender?) men and recommends people who join at least have decent stamina.

I guess what I was looking for (and now interested in possibly starting) is a group of queer people that would like to meet once a week to practice and play basketball together, with no requirements or demands of ability, stamina, body control, etc. The goal is to have fun and practice a sport/play a game that we enjoy, with a group of people who also would struggle to thrive in the traditionally very gendered, hetero- or cis-normative environment of team sports.

It would probably not be free, since we would be required to rent out a basketball field/hall, but it would not be run for profit so I hope to keep costs low.

If people are interested, I could start a Whatsapp group chat for us to talk more about this!

Better to rent a room or try to rent a place with a "partner" in Amsterdam?

Hi everyone,

I’m moving to Amsterdam soon, and I’m trying to figure out the best housing option. I know landlords often require a combined net income of 3x the rent, which makes it tough to rent an entire apartment alone.

I was thinking of two options:

  1. Renting a room (usually €700–€1000/month)
  2. Teaming up with someone (like a friend or someone I meet there) to rent an apartment together. We could even pretend to be a couple if needed, just to meet the 3x income requirement.

My questions are:

  • Is it easier/cheaper to just rent a room at first and then figure out my housing situation later?
  • If I go with the second option, would landlords actually check if we’re a real couple? Or can we just say we’re living together?
  • Are there risks/legal issues with doing this, or is it common practice in Amsterdam?

Any advice or shared experiences would be super helpful! I’m new to all this, so thanks in advance for your help. 😊

Do you need to move stuff to Berlin at the end of February?

I am planning to rent a van at the end of February to move my stuff from Berlin to Amsterdam. I was wondering if I can carry your stuff from Amsterdam to Berlin and we split the costs? There would also be place for 2 people on the drive back (so you and a friend can travel with your stuff)

To all the others, is this the best way to find such an arrangement? Are there better ways to organise this?

Migrants looking to integrate more into the dutch community

I read today an article that said that government wants expats to become Amsterdamers and be part of the community. I support that idea, I lived in this city for 7 years and feel at home and actually do not see myself leaving anytime soon. I am learning dutch currently doing courses for B1 level and can hold a conversation, still struggle to understand people sometimes but getting there.

I was looking for things to do, which are more local oriented where I get to meet local people and do things that will help me set down roots.

Do you have any suggestions?

I do check meet up and amigos apps but most of the events seem to be filled with people who arrived in the past year or plan to leave at some point.
