Hey r/Amsterdam.
Since moving here from the US, I've had trouble finding a good place to watch NBA basketball. I'm a lifelong NBA fan, and while eventually I'm sure I'll drift towards football fandom like a good European, I've begun to realize I am too much of a basketball junkie to quit my usual habits cold turkey. So I've decided to do something about it and host a little meetup.
https://www.meetup.com/nba-basketball-fans-in-amsterdam/?eventOrigin=event_home_page
The idea is to watch two games back-to-back with all the breaks cut out. (Each game is about 90min this way, so that's 3 hours of hoops.) These will be games that took place within the previous week.
It's free. I don't make money on this. The idea is just to find some more basketball fans in the city that wanna watch the games.
The first one will be next Thursday, December 12th. The new in-season tournament (now called the NBA Cup) will be happening, so we will likely end up watching two of those quarterfinal games.
Hopefully this finds some NBA fans based here.. everybody is welcome! Just follow the link and RSVP if you're interested.
It would be a good idea that others suggest the idea as well
LOT61 was my go-to for coffee in Amsterdam. And the best part is that they do a mean decaf. I've got anxiety disorder so it's easier for me to deal with decaf. I really miss it since I moved out of the Netherlands early this year.
So, I was wondering if a good Samaritan here would be kind enough to ship me a few packs of coffee beans from LOT61. I can have the coffee beans delivered to your home and buy a PostNL shipping label that you need to use to ship it to me.
Sorry if I'm breaking any rules here! Thanks!
This isn't a lazy, tell-me-your-favs post asking for suggestions. Rather, I've compiled a list below of "historic" (more than 10 yrs in business), legit and popular places where locals would eat. All are within walking distance of Vondel park, because my parents (visiting) won't be able to walk much, nor ride a bike.
Comments / additions / deletions invited.
So what else would you suggest around Vondel / Overtoom?
Hi all, I’m a 22 y/o hobby hoarder and I’m looking for new friends. I find it hard to meet new people since I’m a big introvert and I dislike going to clubs or bars etc. I am very creative and have many hobbies like crafts (like crochet or knitting), reading, gaming, watching movies, making music etc. I was wondering if there are any recommendations for clubs like a book club or crafts club. I’m also open to try new things like a board game club if they’re beginner friendly. All suggestions are welcome!! (:
Hi all,
Does anyone know if a storage room impacts WOZ value? I have asked the gementee and been sent around in circles without any real, definitive answer.
The reason I query is that there js a storage room attached to title, which was actually sold to a neighbor by the previous owner before we took ownership. We’re currently in the process of potentially buying off our ground lease, but given the WOZ value impacts this, I need to work out if we can get a lower offer once we have the room removed from our title.
We are in the process of having it removed but it, like everything else, is a long and frustrating process that will not be complete by the time our offer expires.
Any insight is appreciated!
Visiting Amsterdam for the second time.

Thanks.
Hi all! For some years now, I have been looking for talking group such as for recovering addicts. I can find a lot of meetings for people with addiction issues, but I would love to join talking groups that are not specific for addiction (I don't have a past with addiction problems, but I do have a past with other psychopathology). Do these exist? Edit: I really mean mental health recovery meetings, so no book or other hobby related clubs, or group therapy
Updated: I’ve filed a complaint on politie.nl and decided to delete the original post due to the blame and baseless accusations in some of the comments. I sincerely hope no one ever has to go through what I experienced. And if, one day, you or your loved ones find yourselves in a helpless and traumatic situation, I hope you’re met with support and care, not blame and hate.
Thank you once again to everyone who offered kindness and advice. God bless you all. 🙏
I currently live in a 34m studio, but I’m looking to move into a one bedroom apartment at least.
I got this option in the Noord for about 1660 (including utilities) and extra 120 for parking. I’m basically getting this for free for the first 6 months (saving the equivalent from first month rent) and also considering renting it out eventually.
The difference will be around 220 EUR in my current expenses and I’m wondering if I should take it.
I like the place. But can’t stop questioning whether I really need the extra room or if I should just continue saving the 200+, while I search for a cheaper alternative.
Any advice?
I [25M student] got arrested after I truly thought I had paid for everything. Even handled perfectly, it's just scary to have life go from a normal day to a holding cell so quickly, seems to be happening more.
I think the punishment itself was pretty fair because I did mess up, but the treatment was awful. The real issue was that they didn’t let me communicate. I'm a bit ashamed of this, but I couldn’t speak without crying because of deportation fears and personal trauma with yelling, and the AH security officer wouldn’t let me communicate through writing on my phone or paper because I “had made a mistake” and deserved my treatment.
I forgot to pay for my cart, around 100€ of beer. It takes unfathomable stupidity to do this, but I was extremely stressed/distracted that day. I tapped to pay, couldn't because of a bag check, then after the bag check my mind was like "we're done here let's leave". I had my hands full so I followed someone else out instead of scanning the receipt I thought I had, which is illegal and a huge mistake.
But I did scan all the items with the loyalty card associated with my credit card so they could’ve identified me. Don’t think shoplifters do this. And after leaving, I spent time outside the store rearranging my items. After a couple minutes, the checkout girl came and asked if the unpaid purchases were mine. I said I thought so, so I followed her back into the store (again, don’t think shoplifters do this).
She brought me to a AH security officer, who interrogated me in this backroom. If I tried to answer, he’d cut me off to yell at me for making excuses. He held me there until the police came and drove me to a police station. They searched me, took my possessions and put me in a holding cell. After fifteen minutes, somebody came in to tell me they were letting me go because they needed the cell "for more dangerous criminals".
As a first time offender, I have a 181€ fine, a 12-month ban from the store and an official warning / arrest. It's unclear if I have to inform job applications about this.
Overall, I am very lucky because it could’ve been way worse. Don’t mean to downplay my responsibility, I understand how dumb I was and how bad it looked. The police officers were very nice / just doing their job, just absolutely despise the AH security officer who was power tripping. And I wish I could’ve made my case, since at no point did anyone try to take my testimony.
And god I’m never using self-checkout again.
Located at Leidseplein, also known as “The Diamond”.
Before construction started, it was stated that the new building would be a “peaceful-looking addition to the square” and that it would “contribute to the visual coherence of the square”.
Well… what are your thoughts?
My partner and I bought a couch to be delivered almost right after we moved into our new home. When we moved into our new home, a significant amount of roadworks was occurring out the front of the house & resulted in poor access to the window to deliver the couch using a lift.
Ultimately, our first delivery removers weren’t able to deliver the couch through the window, nor did it fit through the stairs, so they left and returned the couch to the warehouse. We ended up having to pay for the failed delivery.
Albeit unfortunate, we were determined to find a company to make it work so we contact a few removalist companies and Student Verhuis Removalists said they could after we explained the situation.
They came over the following week after picking up the couch from the warehouse and - somewhat expectedly - weren’t able to deliver the couch through the window as there’s a tram line connecting to the house and for some reason they were able to get the right angle to safely get the couch through. They also then tried going up the stairs with no luck.
After this, the 2 young & junior workers decided they would hoist it on straps and pull it by hand through the window. As they couldn’t do this alone, they had to ask for help from some of the constructions guys (and didn’t ask for our permission to allow them to do so). They were able to get 2 of the 3 pieces in through the window this way. After this - and prior to pulling the last couch pieces - one of the construction workers mentioned that the straps were looking weak but the removalist replied they should be fine. When trying to pull the last, heavier piece in, the straps broke once it was suspended at the 1st floor apartment (a floor beneath ours), dropping the couch from 3m high which resulted in a huge snapping sound. Realizing that they had f’d up - they called their manager for support in helping to get the couch through. In the end, 2 of their seniors came over and helped them get the couch in, which was WITH THE PULLEY SYSTEM attached to the house - somewhat of an obvious and likely safer solution to what ended up being implemented, though initially was never discussed.
The issue we have now is that this company is not accepting liability of the damage. Their contract states that hoisting furniture negates their liability in the 99th term of their contract you sign when hiring their service (which, of course, I had no idea of when they proceeded down this route) and so are claiming they’re not liable for any damage. They did offer to pay for a repair of the couch, though we recently had a furniture maker come over to assess it and they have said that it is completely unrepairable given the extent of the structural damage. The couch piece is worth €1500 so it’s not a insignificant loss, though I’m concerned we won’t be getting any compensation for this at this point in time.
Would greatly appreciate any advice here. I feel like we’re being unfairly treated and this company isn’t accepting the fact they had incompetent employees that weren’t able to do their job properly to deliver our couch safely and notify us of any risks, liability etc.
