Hi, I’m stressed but I don’t know what to do. I had to submit an essay for a course and I submitted it an hour late because I slept through my alarm and couldn’t finish it on time. Totally my mistake. The problem is that I have already submitted an assignment very late to this course because I was sick and I talked to the teacher and they were nice about it. However now I feel like I’m forcing their hand and I can’t really email them about this, again. What should I do? Should I just wait in the hopes that they don’t mention it either when grading? Do teachers usually mention it to you if you submit it just a bit late?
In the course manual it is stated that with each day that passes, one point will be deducted from the grade. Does this mean after 24 h pass or does the first day count as well?
Thanks
I failed an assignment that is the prerequisite for my first year thesis, and without that I am not eligible for any second year courses(psychology), meaning i will encounter a study delay. There is a remedial for this assignment that is sometimes given to students. I have a meeting with the study advisor, what are the chances that mental health circumstances will prove enough for me to perhaps get an alternative so that I dont have to encounter a delay? I've contacted the student psychologist before as well about mental health issues in general.
Hi! I am an exchange student arriving today to ams. Any tips to buy/rent a bike?
Hi, I am applying for an exchange for term 1.
I was wondering how the terms are separated in UvA. When I take a look at the website, it looks like the first term is separated into two parts. 16 weeks in September to December, 4 weeks in January.
Are there gonna be classes during the 4 weeks in January? Are there exams during that time?
I forgot my student card in my phone country, but there is a delay and I won't have the card for my resit exam. Can I still take the exam with my ID card/residence permit?
Did anyone get selected for their preferred destination? If so, where are you going next year? :)
Hi! I am a 21-year-old exchange student coming from Australia for the next semester. I am interested in ttrpgs and board games such as DnD which I played a lot of back in Australia.
I was wondering if UvA had any kind of association focused on board games. Or maybe a DnD group that would be interested in adding a new player? Send me a DM if you know anything or are looking for a new player for your campaign! I am really looking for new friends during my time here and I know that this is a great way to start!
Hi everyone,
I’m an incoming exchange student heading to Amsterdam for the upcoming September semester, and I’m trying to figure out when I should arrive. Does anyone know when orientations typically start? How soon before the semester would you recommend arriving to settle in and get everything organized?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated—thanks in advance!
I’ve recently been accepted to the University of Amsterdam for a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Studies. As an American student, I’m debating whether or not to accept my offer and would appreciate some insight.
I came across another American student at the University of Amsterdam who mentioned that professors don’t seem to care much about their students. Can anyone share their experiences with this, she didn’t elaborate my much. She also noted that the coursework is heavily research-based, with few opportunities for creativity. According to her, nearly all assignments feel like research papers. While I understand that Amsterdam is a research university, I didn’t expect this to extend so strictly to humanities majors.
As an american, would it also be worth it in your opinion to do my bachelors in the netherlands? I’ve heard many people say it’s much better to do a masters abroad instead.
If anyone could elaborate or share their perspectives, I’d really appreciate it. If these concerns are accurate, I’m not sure if attending would be the right decision for me. Any other advice you think would be helpful is also appreciated! I’m simply trying to get a feel for the school before i make a decision .
Hi everyone,
I just applied for the English Bachelor of Psychology in UvA. I'm already planning on doing a study abroad in case I (hopefully) get accepted, but I can't find the destinations anywhere as you need the UvAnetID to access the World Map which shows all the destinations. So if there are any current students of the UvA I would love to know which schools in the US and UK UvA has exchange agreements with! This would really help me in making the decision between two schools if I manage to get in. Thanks!!
Hello,
I’m a graduate student currently doing an internship here in Amsterdam. I don’t attend the University of Amsterdam, but I’ve been told this subreddit could be a good place to connect with people and find out about fun things to do in the city.
My workplace is quite small, and I’m the only intern, so it’s been a bit tricky to meet people my age (early 20s). I’ve tried Meetup and volunteering, but I’ve noticed that many of the people I meet are older, and I sometimes struggle to relate to them.
I’m looking for student-friendly clubs, events, or activities where I could meet others in a similar stage of life and just enjoy the city together.
A little about me: I’m into photography, cooking, and traveling. I love visiting art museums, trying out new restaurants (and then recreating dishes at home), and reading. While I’m not super sporty, I enjoy trying new things like climbing or pottery. I’m not a big partier but do enjoy going to bars or small home gatherings.
If you know of any groups, clubs, or fun events, or if you’re in a similar situation and want to hang out, please let me know!
Thanks
As much as I have researched, love the way they teach the stuff, professors sound nice, but are there any good job opportunities afterwards or is it a waste of money to go exactly for this specific program? A good job opportunity for me would be something interesting enough that also pays well
Hey guys I´m an 18 year old boy studying at UvA. I have met a lot of different friends here especially from school. And I really like the international culture in Amsterdam and what not but I find it difficult to socialize with people from outside of school, because I am reserved at times, which is ok because I still have a close friend group but a lot of times our interests don´t really match and so looking for new people to do things with can be a challenge I guess
For example: my current friend group doesn´t really go out for sports/ parks and would rather opt for pubs or hanging out at one of their houses or going clubbing.
I was curious to meet people who like to workout or sports such as tennis & volleyball. Also walks around the city or cycling in nature or at the Amsterdamse Boss. Or even if you don´t like playing sports or aren´t that athletic it would still be nice to meet someone new I guess to visit museums and what not. :)
If you are interested, DM me I´ll give u my snap or instagram whichever u prefer
Hey, I am a first year at Economics and Business Economics bachelor. To sum it up, the programme disapointed me a bit. There is almost no math and quite a lot of useless knowledge for me (I want to specialize in finance).
I was wondering whether it would be possible to finish it in 2 years rather than 3. I am familiar with GLASS and have already registered for some additional courses. If I worked it out correctly I would need to do 54 credits worth of courses in the 2nd semester of this year so that I can more or less comfortably write my Bachelor´s Thesis.
Is it possible in an administrative way? Is the university okay with it?
Would I be able to handle the courseload? (I got 8.5 Math, 9 Principles of Econ, 9.5 Microeconomics, 10 Accounting)
Hello! I will be arriving at UvA this upcoming semester to do two pre master courses from the psychology bsc. Neither of the courses are statistics focused (they are social psychology courses), but I noticed both have the "Scientific and Statistical Reasoning" subject as pre-requisite for those who do it in the regular bachelor.
I have done many statistics courses before and don't need to take that one, but thought it would be good to review the contents to make sure I am up to speed on everything.
However, besides a critical thinking book, the description of the course says that the readings will be announced during the lectures.
I was wondering if anyone has taken the course in the past couple years and can kindly tell me what other materials were used so I can review them? Thanks!!

Edit: Happy new year!!!
Hi everyone,
I'm a foreign undergraduate student, and I'm wondering if I could do a paid research internship at the University of Amsterdam.
Does anyone have experience with this or know whether the university offers such opportunities for international students? If yes, are there specific programs or departments I should look into?
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Hi, I got accepted and I’ll start my bachelor degree next year. A few days ago I came to Amsterdam and I wanted to visit the campus yesterday but it was ofc closed (except the library which I just looked around very briefly)
Now I’m wondering if it would be a problem to visit tomorrow (monday) and check the Roeterseiland campus again or visit the CREA center etc. Like I don’t wanna be a bother to anyone so I wanted to ask it beforehand :)
hi! phd student from the us here. has anyone done the summer school for sexuality & culture? if so, did you like it? was it worth it? any details would be so helpful
Hello!
I was wondering about the general experience of the honours program, specifically for those who studied Natuur en Sterrenkunde, but also for general students.
Can you take extra subjects from other fields of study as well?
What is the workload like for the honours subjects?
What are the perks?
Thanks a lot in advance
So Im currently doing Model UN at my high school and would love to continue at university. Im wondering whether MUN is an extracurricular/ UvA hosts or attends conferences as I did not find anything except for an old conferemce notice online.
I'm in my third year and I need to have like 30EC of elective courses, but I am having a really hard time registering the courses. I pick stuff I like, there are places available, and then after the round is done, I'm not placed because it was full. Now I am through the 2nd round and I still need 12EC to graduate. Anybody else have similar problems? Like I am stressing out over this, I think there are 2 more rounds, how can I make sure I get placed somewhere? If I need to do an entire year extra because of not being able to get placed in one or two courses that would suck a lot.
Hellooo! Could someone enlighten me if it is feasible to have 2 back to back classes (eg. 1pm - 3pm, then 3pm - 5pm) if the classrooms are on the same campus? (Roeterseiland Campus if it helps!) Do classes usually take up the whole 2 hours, or might end earlier?
Thank you!
Hello everyone!
I was wondering which fraternities and sororities are the most active in terms of parties and events.
Thank you in advance!
Little vent but I need to talk about it. Why UvA requires for some masters such a weird list of scores for the English certifications?
I've taken the TOEFL and, apart from costing an absurdity, I've got 111/120 which is okay in 99.9% of the universities in the world. However I had a bad throat ache and found pretty difficult to talk for extended periods without coughing, as a result I received a quite disappointing 24/30 which was of course the lowest score in the 4 sections.
And of course the minimum requirement is 25 for speaking and no, I've been told, I need to repeat the test even if all the other parts are almost perfect. I hope you see as much as I do how ridiculous this is. I've even done a bachelor entirely in English but since this wasn't in an English speaking country, this is entirely useless.
It just seems as if they wanted students to donate money to ETS and similar companies.
After completing the program what did you do? Was it easy to find a job? Did the LLM give you an edge over your competitors?
For this upcoming semester, I need to get 30 CTS with electives. I’m looking for interesting electives, preferably with flexible attendance rules and ideallyy no exam Lmk of any recs
Heyo! We're a mix of students, expats and locals in a football team in Amsterdam east. We are always looking for good addition to the team! So if you have experience, come over tot try out :)
Just wondering if anyone has gotten a thesis exemption from their course yet? Planning on doing my thesis soon but due to personal issues I failed the exam component of one of my compulsory courses last Summer and don’t have a chance to repeat it until the thesis begins. I really don’t want to extend my studies; do you know if it is feasible to get an exemption provided I have documentation and a valid case of personal issues?
Hello, I’m a non-Dutch speaker (Swedish) in my second year at AUC, and I’m considering taking a few courses at UVA (specifically within physics). The problem is that many of the courses I want to take are taught in Dutch. Has any other non-Dutch speakers here done this and could share if this is manageable? Is there any way to get help from the professor in English, or possibly even taking the exams in English? Thanks in advance!
Hi! I’m from Mexico, and I’ll be moving to Amsterdam for the spring semester in 2025. I’m a bit concerned about the costs of public transportation I’ve seen on social media. I know biking is a common option, but I have a few questions:
• Since biking is so popular, how convenient is it really? How much time would I typically lose by relying on a bike as my main transportation? And does the weather (cold or rainy) make it hard to get around?
• I know there will be times when I’ll need to use public transportation instead of a bike. Is there an affordable monthly pass for international students (non-EU)?
• If there’s no special pass for international students, what’s the regular monthly cost for public transport?
Any tips you might have are also very welcome—thanks for the help!
