Frustrating Rule-Breaking Drivers on Russ Baker Way During Rush Hour

Driving to work every morning along Russ Baker Way is incredibly frustrating. The right-hand lane is clearly designated for vehicles carrying three or more passengers, yet while we’re following the rules and using the other two lanes, cars with just one driver keep zipping by in the dedicated lane. It’s obvious they’re doing it on purpose. Where are the police? Are they all hiding in coffee shops? The last time I saw them setting up a checkpoint was probably months ago. Everyone’s blatantly breaking the rules, and it’s infuriating!

Richmond City Council and Members of the Community are Discriminating Against Legal Cannabis Consumers - Know Your Rights!

Since the beginning of Cannabis Legalization, Richmond has refused to allow legal dispensaries. Furthermore, they’ve created organizations like the Cannabis Concern Group that stigmatizes legal cannabis consumption and blocks legal access in the community for consumers. Meanwhile, the other legal drug, alcohol, is welcomed and even encouraged with the recent ruling to allow alcohol consumption in city parks. This is discrimination.

Know your rights:

As a tenant: you have the right to possess and consume cannabis. You have the right to work in the legal industry and not be refused housing.

As a landlord: You do NOT have the right to refuse a tenant housing for either being a cannabis consumer, or being employed in the legal cannabis industry.

Consumers: If you’ve been discriminated in the workplace in any way, or been refused housing for being a legal cannabis consumer or working in the industry, you have a right to contact the BC Human Rights Tribunal. https://www.bchrt.bc.ca/human-rights-duties/

Exercise your rights! Don’t let the mis-educated take away rights that so many people fought for!

How good is KPU University?

I’m looking for Game Development programs and KPU is one of the institutes that caught my attention which is located in Richmond. However I’ve seen little to no recent opinions about it and the ones that are more elaborated are from several years ago.

So I wanted to ask if anyone knows how good it is, tips for international students or any recommendations are helpful!

Not a Shortcut: Misadventure in Richmond

Here's a fun little story. It doesn't have a point, read just for your own curiousity.

I went from Vancouver to Richmond yesterday. Usually when I take my bicycle there I end up on some weird route that cuts off suddenly, so I thought it would be better on transit + jogging.

I left Richmond-Brighouse station and decided to try and cut through CF Richmond Centre. Turns out, the mall doesn't really have a back door? So I went back as far as I could see, and then followed the big glowing EXIT sign. I was quite surprised when I saw that the EXIT is a stairs up? I didn't know the mall had a second floor. But I followed it, and ended up on the roof! (you can see the door I came out of). This path led to some scaffolding stairs, and I thought that would be the exit I was looking for! Alas, no, the doors you can see in that photo are not accessible due to construction.

Only two minutes after I arrived up there, a mall security guard opened the door to bring me back inside. That's a pretty fast response! They told me that this EXIT sign is pointing to an emergency exit, not a normal exit. That's embarassing. They asked me to delete those two photos, but I was able to recover them.

Alright, so I exited the mall and went to my first destination, then looked up the bus schedules to my second destination. There wasn't anything convenient, so I decided to jog there. I went through Minoru Park and saw a grand spectacle at the firehall: A fire engine was testing its pump in the parking lot, pumping three hoses at a tremendous water pressure! It was a marvel to see, but it's also bitter because oversized fire engines like these are one of the reasons why we need wide roads everywhere instead of pedestrian-centred access paths.

I continued on my way, cutting through an artificial field in Minoru park successfully, and then finding another bad shortcut to the northwest.

Jogging next to these six-lane roads is loud and unpleasant, so I was trying to stay to the smaller lanes. But once the lane started curving south, I decided to shortcut through a housing complex parking lot to get back to the main road. Another mistake! The housing complex had these huge bushes to keep the road noise from reaching them, and I had to cross through them.

Luckily, someone had broken through the bush at the other end of the parking lot, but once I got around the parked cars I found that it wasn't a full access. I had to climb over this mess to reach the road! Honestly, kind of fun though.

Now back on the main road and enduring the noise, I was waiting at a crosswalk and saw an abandoned road construction sign. It had been there so long, it was starting to kill the grass. My friends in my LARP group have been looking for these kinds of signs to make post-apocalyptic armor, but I didn't want to steal it just in case it wasn't actually abandoned. I asked another friend who lives in richmond, and they say those signs are everywhere in Richmond. They said that as a young teen, they dragged a few of them into a bush area to make a little fort.

And that concludes my misadventures in Richmond. Don't even try and take short cuts there, it's not worth it. I can see why people don't walk to get places in Richmond, everything is so wide to fit all the cars. Check out Strong Towns Vancouver if you want to push against car-centric city planning, and if you live in richmond, support completing the bike lane network please! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten stuck on sidewalks because the bike lane suddenly cuts short with no signage.

Places in Richmond where I can sell my used clothes?

Thanks! If I can sell, that’d be great. I don’t want to wait for people to buy on FB marketplace so I’ll just donate if there’s no option.

Appreciate it

Question

I planned to go to the food bank today but according to a Facebook post, they aren't distributing today.

Is there another place I can go? I don't have money money for transportation, so it would have to be in walking distance, preferably around the food bank

This city wasn't designed for this many cars

I've lived here since '99 and I can't believe how much traffic there is on the road. I live on a road where each house has 3+ cars. I don't blame them as rent is expensive and so you probably have two adult kids who each have a car. You also have so many more apartments in this city too.

This is not a complaint or rant, but it does feel like we probably need to do something. At the very least, we should ban parking on the streets on the weekend. We should also find people who are speeding inside plazas. There are people walking in the parking and it's not worth anyone getting hurt just to get slightly faster where you want to go.

Anyone see the accident at Blundell Centre today (2 PM?)

I didn’t see the impact, but saw a Nissan in the middle of the barrier and a man laying unconscious on the floor. Saw people doing CPR, and later ambulance came. Hope he’s doing okay.

Anyone know what happened/was there?

Seriously, getting out of Richmond to work is getting worse and worse

The construction on Westminster Hwy is causing lane merges, and honestly why start major construction in the middle of winter, when traffic is already worse? Wouldn’t it make more sense to schedule this during times of lighter traffic say summer?

And why do they have to kick things off during rush hours? Every time I drive by, the crews don’t even seem to be actively working—they’re just prepping or standing around.

It used to take me 35 minutes to get to work in Burnaby. Now, it’s consistently an hour, sometimes even stretching to 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is beyond frustrating.

Anyone here working for Canada Post?

Just heard the news that Canada Post is laying off some striking workers.

I dont know how the union can do that when those same workers are fighting for a living wage which also increases union fees for the union. Not to mention, this is probably the worst time of the year to get laid off. Is this just a financial move where then the union doesn't have to pay for the striking workers and let the EI be responsible for it?

Just wondering if anyone who is currently working for Canada Post? I know a retired Canada Post worker from 6 years ago. He's always talking how great the best benefits are. And he was saying that they were not that busy during their regular hours. However, they can get extra pay for overtime. Which sounded to me that they have opportunities to make extra money? However, the new hire are getting the worst of it. Apparently, the new hires are getting paid less than their counterpart who was hired 10 years ago when they first started out.

Anyways, just wanting to hear what's the pay and working condition like nowadays because I always assumed it "was" a great working place from I heard.

"Edit" I was hoping to find out from a current Canada Post what's the working condition like. This is what I learned from a retired Canada Post. It "was"

  1. A great place to work for. A lot of people and my friends (when they first graduated from high schools) applied. And they had to apply repeatedly hoping one day they will get the opportunity to work for Canada Post. Mind you, this is probably 20 years ago.

  2. They will take care of you after retirement. When they say they will "take care" of you, it doesn't just mean money. It also means early retirement is also possible. Also, this is about 7 years ago.

  3. Working hours can suck for new hires because of seniority. However, the working environment is quite relaxed with opportunities to make extra on overtime.

  4. New hires are really getting screwed since it's less pay, benefits and work-life balance for them.

This really happens to a lot of different industries where the previous generation seems to have better working condition, better pay structure, better benefits etc. Another example I can give is Air Canada. The mechanics working there 20 years ago. They had better "everything" comparing to new hires. We used to have an Air Canada Hanger in YVR where they do light and heavy maintenance. I don't think they do that anymore unless things changed.

It's so sad how the world is more competitive, the free money is everywhere (just accessible to you), all time stock market highs, housing prices out of reach, way better technologies (we have rich people travelling to the moon and back). Yet, everyday normal people around the world are suffering with less opportunities to move up the ladder or even just to keep up with the inflation.

Any location in Vancouver for sperm donation?

As ironic and dumb the title sounds, is there a facility where I can donate because in this climate of dating cultures/economy I don't feel like I'll have my own child one day

Dear Richmond Drivers

Get off your God dam phones. For some context, I am a worker on the roads all throughout Richmond. I have lots of bright yellow lights flashing away and even an arrow bar pointing which way to go and that you should be going around me. So please, get off your God dam phones and pay attention, especially you Tesla driver's. You guys are the absolute worst!!

More yellow-light runners??

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a huge increase in people speeding up to get past yellow lights even when they’re far from the intersection??? I have to wait until the red light to turn left now this is outrageous! i thought yellow lights meant slow down to a stop if safe to do so.
