Graphics in MUDs?

Hello everyone.

I recently started developing a MUD and wanted to ask what everyone's opinions were on making use of graphics. I understand the perks of being text-based is that it allows the player to use their imagination and creativity while playing. But how many graphics is too much?

For example, would avatars of NPCs/Enemies break the immersion in your opinion? Or would you prefer a detailed explanation through text?

What about character equipment and inventory GUI? Would using icons to represent items break immersion? Or would you prefer simple text and details?

What Was Your First MUD?

For me it's a tie between two games (started the same day and nit sure which was first)

AOL had a series of MUDs like gemstone, but my first and still favorite was Modus Operandi. It was set in an island in the Caribbean and character creation was you filling out visa forms. Then you arrive in the port authority and you're off. They had the BEST mob generation of any game I have ever seen and you could even track down NPCs that had been generated that were tied to crimes. Some were easy and some would fight. I absolutely LOVED that game.

Second one (that is still active and I still have my original character) is Legenda of Terris. Standard spell and sword fantasy game, but they had amazing guild and temple systems. They also have the gold standard of quest systems that I have recreated several times in SMAUG games (though they aren't as good...).

MO closed down about a decade ago and I heard that someone recreated it on a free server, but I haven't checked that out yet.

LoT is still active, though it requires a subscription to play (I think k the free version will let you get up to level 20 or so).

The best fishing mechanics

Let's be real, in games there's only one mechanic that means anything, fishing. What MUD has the best fishing if a MUD doesn't have fishing... is it really worth playing at all?

Anyone remember MysticalMud from the 90s

This was one of my favorite MUDs back in the day with a good RP community. The new player experience was great, and there were always admins around fixing up things and answering questions. Combat was fun too, although I don't know enough MUDs to compare it too. Any vibrant MUDs like this to recommend me?

Need a Coder for a RPI Engine to Get Setup

Hey, I've paid for a shell setup, and I want to get a mud going if there are any coder's with some free time willing to help? It could be a 5 min job, or maybe more. I've tried to get it to compile but I really know nothing about code language, and linux.

Chronicles of Krynn: Increased Focus on RP with New Tools + Loads of Fixes and Improvements

Chronicles of Krynn is a TBAMUD (Circle) based MUD that has been heavily modified to use the Pathfinder 1^(st) edition rule set. It is set in the post-war of the lance era of Dragonlance’s Krynn theme.

If you just want to see what's new, click here: https://krynn.d20mud.com/increased-focus-on-rp-with-new-tools-loads-of-fixes-and-improvements/

This update comes with a renewed focus on role playing, including a number of tools to assist in character building and offering information for storyteller staff to assist with your personal character storyline as well as integrating your character's story into the overall narrative.

If this is up your alley, we strongly recommend visiting the link above, which contains the full news and changelog for this update.

The game is role play focused, and has quest lines for both main starting cities, Palanthas and Sanction, though both only go up to around level 10 (out of 30) for now. We are still working on extending them.

We have 17 base classes: Wizard, Sorcerer, Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, Monk, Druid, Berserker, Paladin, Ranger, Bard, Alchemist, Inquisitor, Blackguard, Summoner, Warlock and Psionicist.

And we have 20 advanced classes: necromancer, weapon master, arcane archer, stalwart defender, duelist, mystic theurge, arcane shadow, eldritch knight, shifter, sacred fist, spellsword, assassin, shadowdancer, knight of the crown, knight of the sword, knight of the rose, knight of the lily, knight of the skull, knight of the thorn, dragonrider.

A base class is a class you can start the game as. An advanced class has to be unlocked with account experience, and cannot be taken at level one. In addition to account experience, each advanced class has certain requirements, which may be skill ranks, feats known, or something else.

As for races, we have 13 base races: Human, Qualinesti Elf, Silvanesti Elf, Kagonesti Elf, Mountain Dwarf, Hill Dwarf, Minotaur, Kender, Gnome, Half Elf, Baaz Draconian, Goblin, and Hobgoblin.

We have 3 advanced races: Kapak draconian, Lich and Vampire.

Basic races are those that can be selected by anyone, including new players. Advanced races must be unlocked using account experience, which is obtained mainly through fighting mid and high level enemies. Once unlocked, advanced races can be selected for any new characters you make on your account.

We have 25 different skills, over 500 different spells or spell effects, over 100 psionic powers, and over 1,200 different feats, class abilities and racial abilities.

We have a crafting system that allows you to create items with custom descriptions and, to a degree, custom stats.

We have a large world of over 10,000 rooms, consisting of many dozens of zones, all of them custom and none of them stock. The roadways have a random encounter system, where you can encounter different monsters based on your level, party size and terrain type.

There are fast travel options such as carriages and sea ports, to travel between major zones and landmarks.

We also have a hunt system, wherein players can hunt down certain boss-strength mobs that drop trophies. The trophies can be turned in for weapon enhancements, such as making a weapon flaming, or defending, or even a vorpal weapon, and many more options. They can also be turned in for rings, bracers or necklaces with permanent affects, such as detect invisibility or haste.

We have a premade build system that let’s people start with an effective build without worrying about the large variety of build options.

We also have a respec system that will allow you to rebuild your character without losing anything.

We have a small, but active staff and player base, who are friendly and willing to help. Development continues nicely, with occasional breaks, and we have a lot of fun things planned for the near future.

You can check us out at https://krynn.d20mud.com/ or connect to krynn.d20mud.com port 4300. Our Discord channel is https://discord.gg/5m5EtQ5XQu

Hope to see you soon!

Help me identify the MUD I played in the mid 90's

I was a college student. The years I played would have been 94-96. I played in the college computer labs, as I didn't own a PC.

It was text only. You could do certain commands by typing "emote takes a puff from his cigar," and it would type (Name) takes a puff from his cigar.

I don't remember many of the adventures, but I clearly remember there being an underwater encounter with Davy Jones or his locker.

You had a variety of items that fit various parts of your body that were constantly upgradeable with new items.

It was fantasy based. Swords and stuff. Can't remember if there were spells.

Any Zombie RPIs out there?

I was doing some digging, just out of curiosity, and stumbled across a few old posts about The Free Zone, which has apparently since been shut down. Everything I'm reading on it is definitely ticking some boxes. Anything of a similar vein still up, these days?

hello, im writing a telnet server and would like your help with some MUD knowledge.

I'm writing a telnet /tcp server and would like to support most MUD protocols. I know GMCP etc (well documented here https://tintin.mudhalla.net/protocols/gmcp/) and am using tintin++ as my test client. I was wondering if there is anywhere still relatively active for developers that I could lurk at and talk shop.

Any recommendations for ACTIVE superhero themed MUX/MUSHes?

I was looking at Multiverse Crisis MUSH but on their wiki the most recent logs are form 2020. Are there any truly active superhero themed MU's out there? TMC only has 5 listed and they all seem to be inactive or very lightly active.

What's a good MUD to play at a 90s-only-game LAN party?

I don't know a whole lot about MUDs, but they seem like a fun idea to run at a 90's game LAN party.

Are there any suggestions for something I can spin up locally and have folks who are new to the genre connect to and get crazy with?

RPMud?

This was an ambitious project to code a mud that would use the 3e D&D system. I picked up a build when the site was up. Now long gone. But could never get it to run.

Years later a friend looked at it and got it up and running. I poked around in it as Admin and could not find any documentation or even room building tools?

Anyone ever poked at it and figured it out? Or was that part just never completed?

Shattered Eden MUD Promotion

Hey, this is my first time making a MUD and my first time posting about it. I'm also more than happy to talk to people about how I made my first MUD and the learning process that I went through to get here. In a lot of ways, making a MUD has been just as much fun as getting it up and running, so feel free to send me a message asking about it!

Shattered Eden is an untamed jungle world where storms blow through, opening rifts between other dimensions that allow all manner of strange creatures and themes to contaminate it's untamed wilderness.
Players exist as entities in the world in their own right, having access to The Void, a realm of empty space where they can make copies of themselves in order to become themselves again after death.
Players can also make items and rooms with lockable doors as well as vehicles and vehicles that can be entered like any other room.
Players can acquire fully customizable followers who will obey orders, helping allow players to truly shape the game world.
The system is class-less with a small number of skills that are each widely applicable to various activities in the game world.
Players are fully capable of customizing their character's race and appearance.
The game-world is still small (about 200 rooms), but with time and effort I hope to expand it for everyone's enjoyment.

There is no application process, and players are encouraged to go wild and enjoy playing with the game. I've seen too many MUDs where staff members are overly-involved to the detriment of the game's gameplay aspects, and to the detriment of the overall enjoyment of the game. Please feel free to do whatever you like and let the game become truly your's.

I kept things cheap for myself by not having a website, instead I simply have an IP and a port, feel free to get connected and check things out!
IP address: 145.223.121.239
Port: 3001

(Opinion) What MUD has the best combat system?

Pretty straight forward, what mud in your opinion has the current best combat system, obviously this is very subjective.

ArmageddonMUD permanently closed

ArmageddonMUD has been permanently closed. For more information as to why, you can visit the game's discussion forum and the post regarding it here: https://gdb.armageddon.org/index.php/topic,61081.0.html

On behalf of the ArmageddonMUD team, past and present, thank you to the players of our game that shared their time and passion with ArmageddonMUD.  As we close the final chapter of this beloved world of bone swords we built together over 32 years, when we think back we're filled with wonderful memories.  Together, this community has shared epic battles, forged lifelong friendships, and lived countless stories.  May these memories live in the hearts of all who walked the sands of Zalanthas.

Nightmare Night begins in Midnight, Equestria!

It's the darkest time of the year, where we hide from the Mare in the moon in costumes and offer her sugary treats so that she may save her wrath for another day.

Midnight's Nightmare Night festival has begun! Take a swing at carnival games, trick-or-treat from townsponies, or brave the terrifyingly confusing corn maze to win tickets and earn prizes. This event is only lasting through the week, and will culminate in a townwide costume contest!

Midnight, Equestria is a sandbox, slice-of-life-dungeon-crawler RPI MUD/MOO set in the universe of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. We are an actively developed game frequently receiving new updates, including the upcoming enchanting system. Currently, we are working towards the end of our open beta (known as 'Season 0') and developing content towards full release (known as 'Season 1'!).

If you're into grindy, roleplay-y, comfy, occasionally-terrifying games where you play as a small pastel horse, come give us a look!

(Our website is still under construction! Excuse the placeholders.)

Your current favorite MUD and it’s mechanics

I asked a similar question a few days ago but this one is more specific, for one it should be a MUD that is still up and playable and the focus this time is on mechanics and gameplay systems! Combat, travel, whatever, what does your favorite MUD do mechanically that hooks you in? If you’re a creator feel free to state why you think your MUD stands out mechanically.

Colony MUD

Hi there! I know I just posted here, but are there any Colony type MUD's? I came over to MUD's from Space Station 14 (as apparently quite a few have), and I wanted to know if there's any RP based MUDs where each character performs a certain job or such to benefit the crew/colony/society at large? If not, then it's still a cool thought if someone would make one! Feel like there's a good market for it.

Good MUD client for live testing and multiboxing?

Can anyone recommend me a MUD client for live testing purposes? Like basically having multiple clients at the same time, for multiboxing (executing actions automatically on a per client basis, but not having to open like 10 processes for the client)

Any MUDs That Match?

Just looking to see if any free RP MUD/MUSH's fit what I'm looking for?

-Survival based, like zombie apocalypse level. Low technology, modern people, Walking Dead sort of vibe.

-Sci-Fi fantasy, basically just Sci-Fi but with a magic-esque system. Similar to Star Wars, but in an original setting.

-Cyberpunk. I know there's a few that have been around for a while, but I know said games have horrible player bases, so if there's any newer/less toxic ones that would be nice.

Id like to volunteer to help a mud

Hi, I'm looking to volunteer to help out with a mud. I used to play muds when I was younger, and I want to give back to the community

What j can offer- I'm a programmer so I can do feature implementation , bug fixes etc. for the mud, or if you need a website made, I specialize in web development.. I also am willing to host the mud server and website if needed free of charge.

I would prefer to join someone who might already have a mud, but if you're really dedicated and serious i would still be willing to help from scratch. All I ask is that I can list the project on my portfolio and allow me to contribute code in some form or another.

Are there any....

Are there any mud codebases out there that have something similar to what coffeemud has with mudgrinder and the ability to build areas not from within the game itself but by using a web interface thats linked to the game or is coffeemud the only codebase that has that particular feature. Id much rather build areas using a web interface than by typing 10-20 command lines of varying lengths inside the game just to build one room, mob or object. Plus mudgrinder has the ability to connect all your rooms in a snazzy looking map builder function in the web interface.

What’s your favorite MUD, and why?

Pretty simple question. What’s your favorite MUD or main MUD and why? Features? Community? Any reason is valid!

Hell if you have multiple favorites that’s fine too, I won’t force you to pick one.

(If you’re a developer/wizard/immortal/whateva on a MUD feel free to advertise why you like your project or think it’s unique as well.)

MUDs that are now shut down are also valid, reminisce about the past if you wish to.

Are there modern muds?

I like muds in concept.

I'm curious how they have changed over time in terms of adapting to modern day (if at all).

I'm talking something as simple as button ui for movement and inventory.

One thing I'm also curious about is, how did people play these together and understand what's going on?

I played one with a bud a while back. Years ago, back in the 2010's actually.

It was cool, but both of us read at different speeds making it kind of wonky and us unequipped to react to it to the enemies.

Mudrammer question

I just downloaded mudrammer and I am having an issue. In the mud I am playing it is required to use quotations for casting multiword spells. Such as c ‘detect magic’ when I type this in to the client it does not recognize it, and the command fails. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
