Wait.....do domes and arches help at all with earthquakes?`

I just realized all the arches and dome talk...is about compression and shear force.....so what did I miss here? In tropical areas there is no...snow load on the roof or anything like that so I kinda dont care at all about compressive force, I care about shear/lateral due to earthquakes...and im reading that is about being able to flex and shake....and the dang cement/concrete im dealing with seems like a bad idea versus bamboo or wood. What the heck did I mess up here for years not even thinking about this? Also why are there many dome people who mention it helps with earthquakes when....earthquakes are not about compressive force ?!

Searching for Instructional Material

Does anyone happen to know where I can get my hands on a DVD from Good Karma Domes? They used to sell it on their website before the owner passed away in 2020.

Is a Zome the easiest dome structure to build between 2 people and then ferrocemented?

  • I have lots of bamboo in my home village where I live
  • I want to use bamboo and wire mesh, instead of rebar and wire mesh
  • It seems I can split bamboo and cut it up into equal pieces and then use bolts to fasten the parts together
  • The problem is I dont know the formular to calculate a zone and all the parts, is there some formula or site?
  • Is there anything easier than a zome that is as strong and can be ferrocemented?

Can I use this sandwiched chicken wire instead of wire mesh for a 5m wide dome with 10mm rebar? Grid wire mesh is expensive, this is way cheaper.

Anyone here done a thin shell or ferrocement dome?

  • Thinking about a 4m wide dome
  • 10mm rebar to make a dome shape
  • Sandwich the rebar with wire mesh
  • Cement it
  • Rock foundation

Has anyone put their dome on Airbnb?

I have a dome house (actual house not tent) in Florida. I’d like to relocate but don’t want to sell it. Anyone have pros or cons or have you done this before?

What exactly from a dome or dome-like structures gives the strenght?

Basically my exact question is really, I understand earthbag domes where the entire structure is arched, but what about a circular structure and then only the roof is arched? Would that still be strong and get the dome strength or the walls have to be arched too? See the picture below. Because it doesnt have arched/curved walls, does it lose out on strength or its still getting the extra strength due to circular wall and dome cap?

Do I have to cut AAC (aircrete) blocks/bricks to make a circular structure?

  • Imagine a 12ft wide circular structure
  • The roof would be a dome style cap, made out of rebar, then wiremesh, then latex cement
  • My question is for these 10x20x60cm white AAC (aircrete) blocks/bricks, would I really have to cut the ends off each one to make it so I can do a circular form?
  • Or can I have a wedge/triangle space between them and fill with mortar?

Ekodome trustworthy?

Hi! I’m trying to get a feel for how trustworthy Ekodome is. We’re comparing different companies that make hard shell domes and Ekodome seems to be the best. Can anyone who’s gone with them comment on your experience with the company? Or does anyone have other recommendations for different companies? Thanks!

Dome cooling/ventilation

Before I go cutting holes in my newly assembled dome, I wanted to ask how others have faired in cooling/ventilating their domes.

I've got screened holes at the very top of my dome (with cupola atop) to allow hot air to escape, and now need to do something to promote fresh air flow. My assumption would be to install a vent/fan as low down as possible, and on the side of the dome facing prevailing winds.

Any insight or ideas appreciated!

Geodesic dome in Canada

very interested with this project https://youtu.be/NGDr3Xrv0Ko I was wondering if anyone tried to do this in Canada. What companies are selling this type of dome? What would it take to do it diy? The dome is basically used as an outer shell for a house with a cob garden. Thanks

Geodesic dome in Texas being built - how to cool it

I have a 20ft wide, 11ft high at the center point geodesic dome being built. It’s coming along well. This week, temps I. Texas are hitting 105, and the inside is wayyyyy too hot. I have some issues I know of, but I’m looking for the best way to cool it. Here’s my current situation.

No venting added yet: how much is this going to drop the temps?

I have Mylar blankets over the skylight. Should I cover the whole half of the dome that is exposed to the sun the first half of the day?

I have an insulation layer on the inside that came standard with the dome.

I have a 12,000 BTU AC that works in the evening and night, but once the sun is on it, the temps skyrocket to 90s

Will the venting solve the heat issues?

Need Dome Rental Companies with Prepackaged Content

I'm currently on the hunt for dome rental companies that offer prepackaged content like outer space or under the sea or other stuff. You get the point. There should be a content and not just the dome.
I've come across several firms, such as DomeGuys, Pacific Domes, and Fulldome, who rent out domes for events like festivals.

Do you have any other recommendations for companies that offer this kind of service? Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ekodome progress update

The base is complete. Was a bit confusing to get going, but once you grok the patterns and optimize your process, it goes really smoothly.

Biggest impression for me has been the quality. Every component is beautifully made and finished. Each piece obviously hand packed and labeled. Rubber and foam gaskets and the smaller bits of hardware are top quality. We are feeling very happy with our choice.

Back in a week to finish the frame and panels.
