  3. Animal liberation and social revolution

Veganarchism is the political philosophy of veganism (animal rights and earth liberation) and anarchism, creating a combined praxis that is designed to be a means for social revolution. This encompasses viewing capitalism and the state as unnecessary and harmful to the earth and animals, both human and non-human.

Justice for Eros: A Tragic Case of Animal Cruelty in Turkey. Need Help From You Redditors!

    Dear Redditors,

I am writing to bring attention to a heartbreaking incident of animal cruelty that recently occurred in Turkey. In a neighborhood where the locals affectionately named him "Eros," a street cat, was brutally attacked and killed by a man named "İbrahim Keloğlan". Despite the incident being widely covered by the Turkish media and video footage circulating online, justice has yet to be served. İbrahim Keloğlan, the perpetrator behind this heinous act, has not faced any consequences for his actions. "Eros" was a beloved member of the community, bringing joy and companionship to those who lived in the neighborhood. His senseless and brutal killing has left a deep scar on the hearts of all who knew him.

Animal cruelty is a serious offense, and it is unacceptable that perpetrators like Ibrahim Keloglan are allowed to walk free without facing any repercussions for their actions. We must demand justice for Eros and ensure that those responsible for his death are held accountable.

I urge fellow Redditors to join me in raising awareness about this tragic case and advocating for justice for Eros. Let us stand together against animal cruelty and speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. Please sign this petition and help justice be served.

    Thank you for your attention.

    Reading suggestion on animal testing

Hi, I am currently starting to question animal testing under an antispeciesims perpective. Do you have any reading reccomendation about it?
I was told that "How to love animals" by Henry Mance is a good starting point but I am not sure whether it covers the topic or not.

    Thanks in advance

How do I find and get involved with local groups?

I’m wanting to get involved with people who actually try to make a difference, because I’m just getting so fucking angry, and I can’t just stand by and do nothing when living things are suffering. I just have no idea how to find other people who feel the same way, especially since I don’t want to do any of that performative, useless bullshit like chaining yourself to a Macdonalds counter. Any information would be great.

People keep claiming they are top of the food chain. They are not. In 50 years they will feel what it's like to be the weak left to suffer without empathy.

    Climate Change, Capitalism, Power structures.

People don't realize what shit is about to unfold.

So damn tired of arguing with marxists and leftists all the time

Isn't it funny how animal lib and veganism get piled on by both the right and left? So tired of trying to argue with marxists who don't believe in normative ethics and instead believe in some flavour of 'Proletarian/class ethics' or moral relativism. Talking with these people is like hitting your head against a brick wall.

I don't actually believe a majority of these people truly feel this way, but they've somehow conned themselves into believing that the only reason racism, sexism, ableism etc. are bad is because they divide the working class from enacting a revolution against capitalism. Oh, excuse me, I thought we stood up to injustice and unjust hierarchy as an end in itself, not because they benefit or disadvantage our movement in some way. What a fool I am.

Then, you try and explain to them how many animals are a part of the working class and experience alienation from their bodies and from nature and they don't have any of it. All because Marx's concept of alienation rests on an ableist animal/human distinction where humans are able to seek spiritual/emotional fulfilment but are prevented by capitalism and can only seek fulfilment in their physical (animal) needs. So, he precludes animals from being able to feel alienation.

God help you if you bring up veganism, you'll hear 'theres no ethical consumption under capitalism' endlessly (which originally came from a Sonic the hedgehog meme lol), despite the fact that there are obviously levels to the unethicalness (which is worse eating a vegetable picked by a low-paid migrant or eating a baby) and you'll be seen as trying to reform capitalism through individual market means rather than through structural systems (Gidden's theory of structuration which mediates between these two areas is an interesting answer to this)

Trying to get marxists/socialists to give a shit about animals seems to me to be a losing battle. I'm much more keen on engaging with anarchsists currently.

This is a companion post to the other one about right-wingers.

    Antinatalism/efilism and veganarchism

I've noticed that compared to other vegan subreddits this topic rarely comes up, so I'm bringing it up.

Antinatalism is a philosophy that states reproduction is morally wrong because it creates a new individual who did not consent to be born and will inevitably suffer for it. Veganism states it is morally wrong to create new animal lives for human use. Creating new humans is always done for the sake of the humans creating them, and nobody needs to be born, so reproduction is not in line with veganism. Same idea with anarchism.

Efilism is antinatalism expanded to all sentient life, and focuses in addition on wild animal suffering (suffering of animals not caused by humans).

Seeing as vegan anarchism is supposed to be about ending oppression of all kinds, that means taking it to the logical conclusion.

All or nothing attitude for Veganism

I made similar post before but it's a bit different.

I have an abolitionist attitude to veganism. I honestly HATE meatless monday or pickme vegans doing things that make opressors (omnis) feel good and comfort them.

I think that we as vegans maybe activists shouldnt encourage Meatless monday or limitimg meat, we should only encourage going vegan. We shouldn't encourage baby steps, That's to say that people would STILL do baby steps, but it would be their problem not ours, we need to remind them of exploitation in they take place.

I got a lot of hate from non vegans and vegans for that attitude. Am I right or not? I am open for critics in good faith.

If Your Looking for a Movie About Anarchist Chickens Rebelling Against Animal Ag (or not), Please Support & Watch This Movie!

It’s a children’s movie but it adheres to both the values of this subreddit and Anarchism & Veganism a lot and it’s entertaining. From these chickens developing a post-oppression self-sustaining community to fighting against speciesism, welfarism, and animal agriculture in general it’s a really good film. Most of the cast is vegan and it would be great to support stop-motion films with a watch due to how much work is put into them :)

Countering prevalent anti-vegan arguments (with sources)

We hear the same arguments against veganism all the time. It can be exhausting to deal with, but I believe it is important to push back against this rhetoric with data, statistics, and reputable sources. I am going to tackle a few of these common talking points in this post; my hope is that others will contribute their own research and sources below. I have been engaging with the same prevalent arguments repeatedly; this post and thread can serve as a quick resource when discussions with non-vegans are taking place. I would greatly appreciate further contributions from this community by highlighting other frequently used rhetoric, or by adding additional sources to the ones that I have provided.

    Argument: "Crop Deaths Tho"

"Just 55 percent of the world's crop calories are actually eaten directly by people. Another 36 percent is used for animal feed."

"The proportions are even more striking in the United States, where just 27 percent of crop calories are consumed directly. By contrast, more than 67 percent of crops goes to animal feed."

"Livestock takes up nearly 80% of global agricultural land, yet produces less than 20% of the world’s supply of calories"

"If everyone shifted to a plant-based diet we would reduce global land use for agriculture by 75%. This large reduction of agricultural land use would be possible thanks to a reduction in land used for grazing and a smaller need for land to grow crops."

"With our modern farming methods, it takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. Therefore, non-vegans consume—whether directly or indirectly—more than 10 times the plant matter of vegans, thus compounding the deaths of the meat-animals with those of the field animals."

    https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets

Argument: "Ethical Animal Husbandry" or "My Uncle's Farm"

"Let’s do the math. On the smallest scale, one cow requires a minimum of 2 acres of pasture land and 20–30 gallons of water daily. That is, assuming the two acres are fully covered with good grazing land (in some places, cows require more acreage because the pasture isn’t filled out with healthy grass for grazing). Additionally, in the winter months, grain will often have to be purchased. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume optimal efficiency, or 2 acres per cow. Now, assuming no change in the total number of cattle and swine currently consumed in the United States, we would need more than 2.5 billion acres of land. The problem, as it happens, is that there are fewer than 2.3 billion acres in the entire United States, including all the mountains, swamps, deserts, and otherwise unsuitable land areas you can imagine. Alaska alone accounts for 17% percent of the United States’ total acreage. And remember, that 2.5 billion required acreage is only for cattle and swine. Would you like to include the 250 million grass raised turkeys, 7 million sheep, and 8 billion chickens currently consumed each year?"

"Cows that are grass-fed as opposed to those being fed grain during the finishing process take much longer to fatten for market, this new system would require 30% more cattle – around 23 million more cows annually – to produce the amount of beef currently in production"

"If turned to grass-fed, the current pasture land in the U.S. could support only 27% of the cattle raised today. Around 67% of the U.S. landmass would have to be dedicated to feeding cattle under this model, up from the 41% today. If forage crops were not used at all the equivalent of 152% of U.S. land would be required for cattle."

Argument: "Veganism is for privileged white people. It is inherently racist."

"Black Americans are almost three times as likely to be vegan and vegetarian than other Americans"

"8% of black Americans are strict vegans or vegetarians, compared to just 3% of the general of the population"

"31% of non-white Americans had reduced their meat consumption in the past year, compared to only 19% of white Americans."

    https://news.gallup.com/poll/282779/nearly-one-four-cut-back-eating-meat.aspx

Argument: "Veganism leads to nutrient deficiencies. It is not healthy."

"the American Dietetic Association (ADA), for example, has argued that ‘appropriately planned … vegan diets … are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle'"

"There is no evidence to suggest that vegans who eat a good range of plant foods are likely to lack in protein"

"You can get the nutrients you need from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet including fortified foods and supplements."

"With good planning and an understanding of what makes up a healthy, balanced vegan diet, you can get all the nutrients your body needs."

    https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/the-vegan-diet/

Argument: "It is wrong to go against customs and traditions practiced by certain cultures"

    Female genital mutilation:

"FGM is seen as part of a girl’s initiation into womanhood and as an intrinsic part of a community’s cultural heritage."

"FGM/C is a devastating health issue that strives under the pretext of social, cultural, and religious beliefs. It is a violation of the rights of the girls and women to life, to health care and protection, to be free from all forms of torture and discrimination and the right to gender equity and equality."

"The reasons why FGM is performed vary from one region to another as well as over time and include a mix of sociocultural factors within families and communities."

"culture is not static, but constantly changing and adapting"

"Today, a greater number of countries have outlawed the practice, and an increasing number of communities have committed to abandon it, indicating that the social and cultural perceptions of the practice are being challenged by communities themselves, along with national, regional and international decision-makers."

    Honor Killings:

"So-called “honor” crime is rooted in a global culture of discrimination against women, and the deeply rooted belief that women are objects and commodities, not human beings entitled to dignity and rights equal to those of men."

"These cultures place significance on women’s general social and sexual behavior, and the value of women’s behavior is what explains the HK phenomena in these communities. The family and social network are worshipped in these cultures; as a result, HK is a collective act that is decided by a family or a group council. It is driven by certain cultural norms regarding honorable acts rather than by individual choices or desires."

"Violence against women in many cultures is perceived as a way of protecting the family’s name and ending the shame that the female brings. Killing, from a legal perspective, is prohibited and punished to the extremes. This is not the case for crimes in the name of honor; these types of killings are considered justified to receive lesser punishment if conceptualized to be honor crimes"

"no cultural, social, or religious belief is ever a valid reason to commit violence against women"
