Good quality field guide for North American snakes?

I'm looking to get a good quality field guide to learn more about North American snakes. I don't plan to go herping and dont need to become an expert. I want to learn about types of snakes, ranges, color variations, etc. I am also interested in turtles, but if there is a great book just about snakes I would consider that. Thanks in advance.

Can someone please help me to identify this snake?

It’s a low quality video so this may be difficult, sorry.

It was found in a backyard near the Northern Beaches of Sydney Australia.

Recently took in a milksnake

Recently rehomed a milksnake from a friend’s colleague (so basically a stranger). It’s been about a month and she’s eating well, but is extremely skittish and musks when handled. So far we’ve only tried handling her twice and that’s mainly been to change her substrate or clean the tank a bit. The tank was filled with poop when we got her so we’re assuming the previous owners didn’t handle or interact with her a ton. Wondering how to go about desensitizing an older snake to handling and our general presence. She is active when alone in the evening, but frantically hides when she feels our vibrations in the room.

We have a corn snake (in a diff room) who is very curious and comfortable where he comes out to the front of his tank whenever we are in the room. I would love to get our milk snake to that level of comfort. I’m wondering if this is just something that will take a lot more time or if I should put a piece of my clothing in her tank (I know that works for lizards but don’t know about snakes). Another idea is decking out her tank with more enrichment and hoping being generally happier in her tank will make her more comfortable overall. Any thoughts?

What are some snakes that are more perceptive to their environment?

I’m currently a high school student, and after making some contact with rescue snakes from an animal shelter last year for our Biology Society’s activity, I have fallen completely in love with these little meat noodles. I have decided that I will get a pet snake after I have a stable job and one of the greatest and comfiest terrarium for my future snake friend, and I would like to know what are some snakes that are more compatible with me.

I would like a snake that are more docile in general, such that for instance they can calmly coil around me as I do my work/study. I would also like one that isn’t too blind to their environment (i.e. always doing stuff that can potentially harm itself), so I would also like a snake that is more perceptive to their environment. I’ve heard good things about eastern indigos, but I’ve also heard that their intelligence is overrated. I’ve also heard things about Black Milks, though I haven’t researched about them enough.

Any suggestions is alright, as by the time I adopt it it will have the best terrarium customised for it in all of earth! :D

My pet pythons are still cranky even after being fed

Hello! I'm new to the community of keeping pythons and snakes. I have been in this for roughly 18months now, I just wanted to get some advice on why my Woma (9 year old female, roughly 5.5ft) and Black headed python (3 year old female roughly 8.5ft)

So I feed them a meal every month, my Woma gets a 200g to 250g rat and my BHP gets a 250g to 300g rat. Should I increase their feeds or get them larger foods? I've tried to get them to try other things like quails and some smaller baby rabbits but they are just not interested unless it's rat.

So should I be increasing their feeds or changing their diets again, I apologise if this comes off as uneducated, this is only become a recent issue in the passed month since their last feed. It has also gotten warmer here due to summer (Australia), so I am thinking that's a factor aswell as I assume the warmth and increase their metabolism.

Thanks! Just wanted advice

Humidity and Moss

Good afternoon y'all! I'm currently researching and looking around to be prepared for my first ball python this Saturday from a repticon. I've seen how tricky having humidity is, and wanted to ask if it's a good idea to use moss? Specifically I was thinking of putting moist moss in the hides and covering the area in coconut chips and maybe some sand. Ik snakes can be individual little guys so I'll have to see what their preference is. Any other advice is appreciated, I love hearing people's thoughts and experiences. Thank y'all 😁

Meet Udon, the Corn Snake!

Udon is my first baby, she’s ~2.5ft long now and very cuddly! I also have a Honduran Milk Snake named Soba, but I’ll post him another day. Enjoy this picture from when Udon was still a lil thing!

Tank temperature is too low. How can I

Hi! It's gotten a lot colder where I live and as a result it's gotten colder in my snake enclosure too. I'm looking for ways to up the temperature in my tank so my girl doesn't get sick. Is there a stronger bulb I could use for my heat lamp? Would replacing it help? I've had the same bulb for awhile, so is it possible it's gotten weaker over time? Would it be a good idea to swap it out for a new bulb?

I'm not 100% sure what to do. Any advice or feedback is appreciated!

FEEDING

Any advice on switch my snake from live mice to frozen? I've looked online can't really find anything helpful. She was eating live when I got her and I just find it to dangerous for the snake.

Substrate for arid species?

I recently got a Schneider’s skink, its currently substrate is a mixture of rocky sand and calcium. I was wondering if calcium sand is dangerous, because I’ve heard the small particles can cause damage. I also have a Rosy Boa that I know can’t be in dusty substrates, but I would like to have her on a more natural, sandy substrate. What sandy substrates can I use to provide places to dig without having fine particles? Also, is mixing in coconut fiber into the sand a good idea?
