SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Indicate the geographic location in the title [using square brackets].
  • Take the clearest and most detailed photos possible.
  • Indicate the rough size.
  • If you're looking for an ID of a shed skin, please provide a closeup of the head, scales along the back, and the bottom of the tail if possible.
  • Provide any other information you feel could help!
  • This is a place to foster understanding and appreciation of snakes. Posts about how you purposely killed a snake or how snakes should be killed are not met warmly.

IDing TIPS

  • Don't make blind/random guesses. Our goal is to provide positive leads; false leads are counter-productive, e.g. "similar looking" is rarely good enough at the species level. If one is unfamiliar with the taxon, practice diligence, e.g. check other members of the taxon, as well as those of higher taxa. Especially for medically significant snakes, if you aren't 100% sure, leave the ID to someone more knowledgeable.
  • If you know better, explain why using (ideally) discrete diagnostic characters.
  • Cite/Link a source or point out a diagnostic character whenever possible.

Sorry I do t know how to Reddit but here is a pic of the snakes tail from earlier. Someone said the rattles can break off but it looks like a regular tail to me.

Found in southeastern US.

I really have no clue what it is. After looking through pictures it looks like some type of rattlesnake but it doesn’t have a rattler.

Found this little guy while fishing a river in western North Carolina

Sorry the photo is blurry, but I had seen a rattle snake earlier in the day so I kept my distance from it to be safe.

Found while gardening. Madison County, IL.

Found this little guy while moving rocks in my garden. I was probably stepping around/over him for 20 minutes before I saw him. Thought he was a string that had been buried because he was stretched out and very still. He wasn’t happy with me using a stick to lift him onto the shovel for relocation. We have a heavily wooded creek near the house, might be where he came from.

Thanks!

Snakes Don't want to bite people as evidenced here

Snakes definitely don't want to bite people. This post stolen from Twitter.

The girl is almost standing on the tail of an Eastern Copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix, (venomous) and no one noticed until later looking at the picture apparently.

[Southern California]

He was polite enough to let me know we were on his trail and should kindly go around. Off trail was a severe downslope so we waited 5mins while he just buzzed away. Eventually we just carefully went around since he was adamant he wasn’t moving.

[Southern CA]

Surprised us on a hike this morning. Interrupted some sunbathing. Got a little upset after the picture and rattled at us then went into the shrubs.

I'm mostly just excited I finally have something to contribute here.

Snake ID Requset [Philadelphia]

Hi. We’re hoping to confirm that this snake, found in a house in the suburbs of Philadelphia, is, as we suspect, a garter snake. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.

What is this snake found in the SC Sandhills? I was told by a professor that it’s a glossy crayfish snake but it doesn’t look much like it
