This subreddit focuses on the futurist visions of eras past. However posts may also contain contemporary art with a retrofuturist theme.

Futurism was born out of humanity's sudden thrust into technological revolution. To the many that witnessed the dramatic, rapid change, it seemed a technological utopia was fast approaching. This unbridled optimism caused the collective imagination to run wild.

Dreams of the future reveal more about the mind of the dreamer than the future itself.

Futurism was born out of humanity's reaction to a sudden thrust into technological revolution. To the many that witnessed the rapid change, it seemed technological utopia was fast approaching. This unbridled optimism caused the collective imagination to run wild.

Although many of these visions seem almost comical now - the spirit in which they were created is part of the reason you are currently looking into a glowing rectangle with unlimited, instant access to the sum of all human knowledge.

POSTING GUIDELINES:

Vintage =/= Retrofuturism

Vintage Sci-fi =/= Retrofuturism

Please avoid posting vintage technology, unless it has a intentionally and obviously "futuristic" design.

I will work to prevent default sub syndrome: clickbait titling, meme-ification, etc. So please watch the titling and try to be as informative as possible! Vast majority of submissions have been perfect for the sub and the community is great. Just want to nip any trends in the bud. I reserve the right prune low-quality and/or questionable content to keep the frontpage looking good!

Post only:

1. Futurist visions from eras past.

2. Contemporary art with a retrofuturist theme.

3. Discussion threads related to retrofuturism.

Is there a name for 80s retro futurism?

I really like the styles of the alien franchise and more recently mouthwashing but they’re not quite futurism or retro futurism, more 80s futurism. Star Wars very roughly would fit into this category as well

This post is probably off topic I’ll delete when I get an answer

The Creators of the Kickstarter hit, "The Book", are back at it with a very retro-futuristic inspiried book called The Black Book - The ultimate guide to alternative inventions

First off, I'm not affiliated with the creators or the project. I backed the original Book kickstarter and really love the results. Was really excited to see this new project of theirs and some of the sneakpeeks at the artwork. I'm not one to typically share a product, but given that this kickstarter is already backed, I feel like it's less blatant promotion and more sharing something that others who are really into retro-futurism artwork would really be into.

Lecture: Retrofuturism: in search of lost illusions

Lecture within the framework of the seminar "Retrofuturism"

Each of the epochs assumed its own project of the future. This future was built from what surrounded people, pushing to the limit the trends that seemed most important to contemporaries. And what seemed like a real possibility some 50 or 100 years ago now looks either naive or creepy.

At the lecture, we will try to figure out what attracts us to the alternative future and how it happens.

Lecturer — Vladislav Degtyarev, PhD in Cultural Studies, Associate professor of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, specialist in English art and architecture, author of the books "The Past as a field of creativity" (Moscow, 2018), "Baroque as connection and Rupture" (Moscow, 2021), "Madonna among the Ruins" (St. Petersburg, 2022) and "Memory and Oblivion of Ruins" (Moscow, 2023).

The lecture will be given today, October 24, 2024. At the Mayakovsky Library, St. Petersburg.
