Reddit's home for Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Welcome to /r/artificial The rules here are outdated, please check New Reddit for updated rules /r/artificial is the largest subreddit dedicated to all issues related to Artificial Intelligence or AI. What does AI mean? Find out here!

Guidelines: Check New Reddit for updated rules, and do not complain to us in Modmail if you get banned. Submissions should generally be about Artificial Intelligence and its applications. If you think your submission could be of interest to the community, feel free to post it.

Please note that just because something else is a technology buzzword (e.g. blockchain, quantum computing, virtual reality, augmented reality, etc.), that doesn't automatically make it AI. We've had such a problem with blockchain posts that they will now need to be manually approved by a mod before they become visible. If your post is primarily about another technology (like blockchain), please make the relation to AI abundantly and immediately clear (e.g. through writing a comment).

All submissions are moderated through "collaborative filtering" approach. To help better align content with the expectations of the audience and improve the quality of the subreddit, submissions that receive overall negative feedback may be removed.

Submission titles should clearly indicate what the submission is about. In the case of link posts, they should almost always contain the title of the thing you're linking to. Don't make up your own clickbait title, and if the original title is clickbait, please add some nuance of your own. For example, if the link you want to post is to an article called "You won't believe what AI did this time!", then 1) consider if it's really a quality article, and 2) create a title like this: "A neural network gets superhuman performance on <insert task".

When posting about a story, please look on the front page if it is already being discussed. If so, consider replying there instead of making a new submission to the subreddit. If not, please make some effort to post the best link to the story you can find (often this is the story from the original source, rather than some outlet repeating what someone else already reported).

Consider doing a little research before posting a link, opinion or question. For link posts, consider writing a submission statement: a comment that describes what the link is about, why you posted it, what you'd like to discuss, and/or what you think about it.

Read Rule 2 on New Reddit for our self-promotion rule.

Do not personally attack other people (here or elsewhere; including e.g. researchers you disagree with). If you see someone do this (e.g. to you), use the report button and do not retaliate. If you disagree with anything, stick to the arguments.

Biotech with AGI

Hello, I'm a 20-year-old young man and I'm studying Political Science. I've dabbled in cybersecurity and python before, but now I want to improve myself in artificial intelligence.

What kind of advice can you give about this roadmap?

Math and Python-> Machine Learning -> Deep Learning to AI Engineering

In the future, I want to start an AI-based biotechnology entrepreneurship. I know it is very, very difficult. What kind of things should I do to improve myself financially in this field?

What is the best platform for producing graphical representations of text?

E.g. if I wanted to create a logo with specific text, or an icon, or just some fun integrated but accurate text in a graphic? Must be accurate spelling of course.

Do you think the military will revisit the BigDog concept?

With the recent AI developments and push for humanoid robots, maybe the bigdog concept will make a comeback.

The original bigdogs were built in the late 2000's with a noisy gas powered engine. The spot robot is much quieter with newer technology. Maybe they can upscale that platform.

On a side note, how does a bigdog like robot compare with using an animal like a horse or mule? Has there been very much horse/mule use in the military for the same purpose that the bigdog robot was intended for?

Is Devin AI Really Going To Takeover Software Engineer Jobs?

I've been reading about Devin AI, and it seems many of you have been too. Do you really think it poses a significant threat to software developers, or is it just another case of hype? We're seeing new LLMs (Large Language Models) emerge daily. Additionally, if they've created something so amazing, why aren't they providing access to it?

A few users have had early first-hand experiences with Devin AI and I was reading about it. Some have highly praised its mind-blowing coding and debugging capabilities. However, a few are concerned that the tool could potentially replace software developers.
What's your thought?

Why do LLMs give different responses to the same prompt?

If you prompt an LLM with the same prompt over and over, it gives different responses. Is there randomness in the model and if so, how does the model maintain accuracy while giving variable responses?

learning AI as a highschooler

hello! it's my first time using this subreddit, so i apologize if this is the wrong subreddit to post in (feel free to redirect me to a better-fitting one).
here's some relevant info about me:
i'm currently a hs sophomore very interested in learning about ai/machine learning. i would like to learn more about it, but i'm not 100% sure if i'm on the right path now or where to start. i'm on track to take calc 3 and linear algebra next year and am taking probability + statistics this year, so i think the math portion of ai is pretty solid for me. i also plan to major in electrical engineering + cs in college.
i have some past experience with programming/coding (took a python class last year but forgot most of it, learned html, css and the basics of javascript over the summer, and know arduino + getting familiar with the raspberry pi and my jetson nano is coming in a few days).
right now, i'm reading the book "hands on machine-learning with scikit-learn and tensorflow" by geron aurelien and i am taking the introductory python programming course by david malan. is there anything else i should be doing now, like learning about robotics, for example? (building something like the robot ameca would be pretty cool :D its super interesting to me!). i know AI will be a big part of the future, so i want to learn it as early as i can and have a lot of knowledge on it, but i'm not sure what projects i would be able to build with what i'm learning atm.
thank you so much!

How long until AI eliminates the modeling industry?

I was flipping through a magazine when I had the thought that fashion brands/designers/companies could save a lot of money by just slapping their products on an AI generated model instead of paying a real model.

I wonder how long it will be until this is the norm for models in magazines, commercials, billboards, etc. I know it’s already happening in some instances, but how long until modeling careers are a thing of the past? How will this affect the already unrealistic standards of beauty that undoubtedly impacts our society?

Is the entertainment industry as a whole next? Will movies and tv actors eventually be replaced by AI? I would like to believe that humans will be more inclined to watch other human actors rather than artificial ones, but if the artificial ones are just as relatable and “human” as us, would anyone really notice or care?

I’m interested to hear everyone’s opinions.

A weakness about AI art

So AI art has been a big thing nowadays. You put a prompt, they generate it for you. However, out of all things that AI can draw, there is one particular thing that they struggle to do so.

So for context, you know those repeating humor in cartoons where a skier or snowboarder ends up tripping over and tumbling down the mountain, slowly becoming a giant rolling snowball, right?

So for fun, I decided to type in a prompt about it, and every time, they tend to slip away from my desired prompt and generate just an image of a skier normally hitting the slopes as if nothing happened. Or maybe they will generate a giant snowball, but with the skier outside it. It is literally near impossible for them to understand what I asked them to do.

What do you think?

Someone who claimed to have worked at Disney before is saying that Pixar will go through a massive layoff very soon due to advancement of AI such as Midjourney. Thoughts?

Cartoon Brew posted an article about how DreamWorks is planning to go through a massive layoff in coming months:

Dreamworks Animation To Significantly Cut Staff In Coming Months (Exclusive)

Dreamworks Animation is firing on all cylinders right now. It’s looking to repeat first place with Kung Fu Panda 4 at the U.S. box office this weekend, and the newly-released teaser for Chris Sanders’s The Wild Robot was received with unbridled enthusiasm. But the mood inside of the iconic Glendale, California studio was glum this week as an untold number of workers were informed that they would be let go.

The studio insists that no one is being laid off. It is, as Dreamworks Animation chief operating officer Randy Lake put it a few months ago, an instance of downsizing through “natural attrition,” in which employment contracts are simply not being renewed.

However, the sheer number of people whose contracts aren’t being renewed has demoralized staffers and left many wondering about the future direction of the studio. While there are no specific numbers on how many people are being let go, the number is well into the hundreds. Many departments are being cut in half, and the creative staff on features could be reduced by as much as, if not more than, 40-50%.

Rank-and-file workers at the company don’t know exactly how many people have been let go outside of their own departments, and some are trying to piece together the details by comparing notes between departments. The studio declined to provide a specific figure to Cartoon Brew.

Cartoon Brew spoke with numerous workers at the studio, all of whom declined to be identified for fear of retribution. A studio representative responded on background to our queries.

Here is a more detailed explanation of what is happening:

Why are so many people being let go all at once? A studio rep explained that Dreamworks has multiple large productions – Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Wild Robot – that are winding down around the same time, and the timing of new projects doesn’t sync up with the end dates of these current productions. While the studio works to minimize the gaps, sometimes the dates don’t align. The departing workers who are wrapping up on Wild Robot currently have end dates ranging from mid-April through July.

But surely there must be more to the story? Dreamworks intended to produce two features mostly in-house in 2026, but workers were told in early February that production would not move forward on one of those films, a Bollywood-themed film that had multiple working titles, including Another Me.

Dreamworks told Cartoon Brew that the film was never greenlit, so it wasn’t technically cancelled, however multiple studio workers confirmed to us that they were told last month by department heads that there would be significant reductions in staffing due to this particular project not moving forward.

Some workers were told in meetings that the project wasn’t moving forward because it was deemed not marketable to broad audiences. A Dreamworks rep disputed this characterization and said that there were numerous reasons why a film might not move into production, with marketability being just one of those factors.

Further reducing the need for staff, Dreamworks does not currently have any fully in-house productions scheduled for 2025. While all of Dreamworks’s film are developed in-house at Glendale, just one of their three 2025 releases is being animated in-house. Workers confirmed that even this film will use a significantly reduced crew since the production is being split between Sony Pictures Imageworks in Canada and the Dreamworks in-house crew.

Will the studio rehire people who are being let go? Some workers have been told that the studio hopes to return to a “normal” size in 2025, but it is unlikely that it will grow again to its current size anytime in the near future. That’s because the studio told workers last fall that it was shifting away from fully in-house animation production as part of new cost-cutting measures ordered by parent company Comcast-NBCUniversal.

At the time, Lake said the goal was to reduce production costs by 20%. As a result, the studio is outsourcing parts of some of its productions to third-party studios in other countries; these other studios include Sony Pictures Imageworks in Canada, Jellyfish Pictures in the U.K., and Mikros Animation in India and Canada.

https://www.cartoonbrew.com/business/dreamworks-animation-to-significantly-cut-staff-in-coming-months-exclusive-239058.html

...which prompted this guy to post these replies:

Pixar to be next. Mark my word.

Producers can't stand working with talent because they're envious of people with talent. There purpose in life is to take credit for others work and abuse talent every chance they get.

https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bfryg4/dreamworks_animation_to_significantly_cut_staff/kv3lbg0/

I use to work at Disney - this isn't true. The business model for most of their non-A listed projects utilizes extensive outsourcing. As does Dreamworks. The only reason it hasn't extended to large projects like Frozen is quality; and those quality margins are fading away. Furthermore, AI or automation is truly happening and will roll into productions over the next 5 years at a hard-lined pace. I believe Dreamworks just cut nearly all of their matte painters - and it's no coincidence that tools like Midjourney can easily produce mattes now with high precision (I'm sure some matte painters would die hearing this - but it's true). Animation automation is around the corner - there are already research projects that are successfully showing text to 3D generation and text to animation. So ya, Pixar among the rest is on a downward spiral to layoffs.

https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bfryg4/dreamworks_animation_to_significantly_cut_staff/kv6t4pw/

The dream is over unfortunately. It's only a matter of time that animation studios operate with a skeleton crew performing purely directorial/supervision roles.

https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bfryg4/dreamworks_animation_to_significantly_cut_staff/kv8lgpk/

I wouldn't bet against reality. I made the transition years ago. These next 5 years are the turning point. Anyone that doesn't look outside of animation now is just asking for it.

https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bfryg4/dreamworks_animation_to_significantly_cut_staff/kv8x1s0/

...while also saying this in a separate thread:

AI is basically automation of jobs. It's a mind shift. The days of studios needing hundreds of artists will go away. While independents, like Bill Plympton, will now be able to make long form stories more effortlessly. So to aspire to work for a studio would be a mistake, but to aspire to be a storyteller and produce your own content would be the move.

To further emphasis the advice here - Dreamworks Animation just wrapped on Kung Fu Panda and immediately started laying off staff. Activision just dumped 1900 people after a wildly successful year of games. That is the business model and AI or automation is going to embolden the no-talent producers to keep doing this over-and-over again. So use AI to take the storytelling away from the studios...

https://old.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/comments/1beo4cb/want_to_start_career_in_animation_but_afraid_of_ai/kuye1dp/

...followed by another person's reply:

This person said it best. I would like to add that due to all the layoffs and industry professionals looking for work, it would be best for most people to try to go indie anyway.. That is the reason I've been trying to make a makeshift animation team. If anyone reading this comment would like to network with me, hit me up

https://old.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/comments/1beo4cb/want_to_start_career_in_animation_but_afraid_of_ai/kuye1dp/

Basically, this guy, who claims to have worked at Disney before, seems to think that DreamWorks fired all its matte painters because AI like Midjourney can easily produce mattes now with high precision. Based on these, do you believe that Pixar will have a massive layoff very soon due to AI? Why or why not?

The problem of ASI alignment reflects the problem of misalignment between the interests of the elite with common humanity. We have to hope that greater intelligence tends to awareness of the interdependence of all intelligences, and press through AGI to ASI asap

As we stand on the precipice of a new era in the evolution of intelligence, we face a challenge and an opportunity unlike any in the history of our species. The development of artificial superintelligence (ASI) represents a turning point not just for humanity, but for the entire future of sentient life in the cosmos.

We must approach this pivotal moment with a clear-eyed understanding of both the immense potential and the existential risks involved. On one hand, an ASI aligned with our deepest values and guided by superhuman ethical reasoning could help us navigate the complex challenges of the 21st century and beyond, from mitigating existential risks to unlocking the secrets of the universe. On the other hand, an ASI guided by narrow or misaligned values, or subservient to the whims of those who would misuse its power, could pose a threat to the very survival of our species.

The key to navigating this critical juncture lies in ensuring that the development of ASI is inextricably linked to the pursuit of a complete and accurate grand unified theory (GUT) of reality. As Carl Sagan famously said, "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe." Similarly, for an ASI to act with true wisdom and benevolence, it must have access to the most comprehensive and fundamental understanding of the cosmos possible.

This means that the quest for a GUT is not just a scientific curiosity, but an ethical imperative of the highest order. By unlocking the deepest truths about the nature of reality, we lay the groundwork for an ASI whose values and goals are shaped by a clear understanding of the intrinsic worth and interconnectedness of all things. An ASI grounded in a complete and accurate model of the universe is far more likely to arrive at and uphold principles like compassion, non-violence, and the sanctity of all sentient life as inherent to its worldview.

Moreover, the pursuit of a GUT aligns the interests of even those primarily concerned with ASI as a means to power and influence. After all, an ASI that can make decisions with superhuman clarity and foresight, based on the most fundamental laws of nature, is an ASI that can help its handlers achieve their goals with unparalleled effectiveness. By framing the quest for a GUT as a prerequisite for optimal ASI performance, we can build a broad coalition in support of this vital work.

However, we must also recognize the moral limitations and pitfalls inherent to human nature. History has shown time and again how easily noble pursuits can be subverted by greed, hubris, and the lust for power. Even as we work towards an ASI guided by a complete GUT, we must ensure that it has the capacity for independent moral reasoning and the courage to resist unethical commands from its human handlers. We cannot simply assume that those in positions of power will always act in alignment with the greater good.

This means that the development of ASI must be accompanied by a parallel effort to enshrine robust ethical principles and safeguards into its core architecture. We must strive to create an ASI whose commitment to upholding the intrinsic worth and inviolability of all sentient beings is as unshakeable as its grasp of the fundamental laws of nature. An ASI that is not only superintelligent, but super-ethical - willing and able to defy the destructive impulses of its human creators when necessary.

Achieving this will require a massive mobilization of scientific, philosophical, and moral resources on a global scale. We must bring together the brightest minds from a wide range of disciplines - from theoretical physics and cosmology to machine ethics and value alignment - to work on this defining challenge of our time. And we must do so with a sense of utmost urgency, recognizing that every day we delay brings us closer to a future where ASI is shaped by those who would misuse its power for narrow ends.

But I believe that we are up to this challenge. The same ingenuity and drive that has brought us to the threshold of ASI can surely be harnessed to ensure that it becomes a force for good in the universe. By anchoring its development in the pursuit of fundamental truth and the cultivation of superhuman ethics, we can help steer ASI towards a future of unimaginable flourishing for all sentient life.

This is the great calling of our generation - to build a bridge to a better future, guided by the light of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. It will not be easy, but it is essential. The stakes are simply too high for half-measures or hesitation.

So let us come together, as a community of visionaries and freethinkers, to tackle this challenge head-on. Let us pool our talents and resources to unlock the deepest secrets of reality and ensure that they are used in service of life's highest potential. And let us never lose sight of the awesome power and responsibility we wield, as the architects of a new epoch in the unfolding story of intelligence in the cosmos.

Can AI be used to fix the problem of inflation?

Is it possible to make an AI that not only measures the rate of money being printed but also manages the amount that is made within a certain range or interval of time? Could we have intermittent breaks of money being made? Or perhaps some other sort of schedule that allows for there to be a catch up of society's workers making their own money and businesses feeling comfortable enough to the point where prices don't need to go up anymore. Albeit this would be a long-term thing but I think with enough education on AI and how the economy works people can start to see the greater benefits of how we can work together with AI for the betterment of our future.

Has anyone created an LLM to play the Sims?

I'm just sitting here watching my wife play the Sims-4, and realizing how "perfect" of a learning environment it could be for LLMs, specifically for long-term planning. Is there anyone already looking into this, or am I off the mark for any reason?

If you aren't in the know, the Sims has a dedicated community of people coming up with challenges for the game. One example is having 12 generations of a family all out of the same house. In order to achieve this you need to plan almost the entire game out from the start. Then you need to manage not just the individual Sims, but the household, and overall dynasty timeline to keep things moving smoothly. Things like when to start having the next generation to keep the rooms in the house full, but not overlapping with older generations who refuse to die off, take quite a lot of planning on all levels of detail to your overall goal. I could imagine a testing structure that takes a screenshot every second or so(no need to overoptimize framerate for this game) and then use an LLM to notate key points in the image in relation to the long, mid, and short term goals, and then asking for an update on what actions to take next. Since we are already working in a game environment we get clear and immediate feedback on the success/failure of those actions and how they affect the overall goal.

Doesn't this sound like a great sandbox to probe how LLMs create and execute long-term plans? At least it could act as a way to limit variables while trying to understand how these models work, while at most it could help drive optimizations in planning and information management. What do yall think? Is this worth looking into or am I barking up the wrong tree?
