Do any of you have an understanding with the managers/workers of the stores to which the dumpsters belong?

I ask this because for a couple reasons. Firstly, I’m oblivious. I joined not because I’m a dumpster diver, but because I enjoy seeing the treasures you all find and share here. Secondly, I wonder if any of the managers or employees would be willing to set aside the food, clothes, and other useful things to be disposed of outside of the dumpster (or just packed in a box inside the store) as to prevent people from having to actually enter the dumpster itself. It would save a bit of time and effort if there was an understanding between the diver and the workers. Of course, I get that some stores might have a policy of some sort that would prevent this, but I’m still curious.

For those that are cool with the stores, how did you get good rapport with them? Any helpful hints for the rest? Do you ask them if they have a certain day which they throw out certain items? How do you operate around unsavory store managers and employees?

I regret talking to a random kid about dumpster diving

Alright so I met some kid whilst dumpsters diving, they made the usual question, "what are you looking for? " I told them that I was looking for clothes, electronics, and metal. They said, "that's sick!" Then told me about TikTok featuring dumpster diving videos and he thought they looked cool and interesting. He then walked away saying, "stay safe," I repeated the same pleasantry.

I feel like a bad influence cause dumpster can be dangerous with the sanitary and infection issues as well as legal trouble. I wasn't able to explain the dangers to him as we both were strapped for time.

What do you guys think?

Small chain grocery store a mile from my house

I hit this place up usually twice a week bc my hauls are almost always this good. I bring 70% of the food I find to work for my coworkers and keep around 30% in my basement. Keep it up, trash pandas ✌🏼

Allergies and aches and pains are under control.

Dumpster diving seems to always provide when needed. Sitting in the car with a runny nose , I realize I need cold medicine and tissues. I stop and look in my favorite dumpster and there are 5 bags waiting for me. I grab them and run. I stop to check them out and low and behold the Karma Gods have blessed me. I have enough allergy , cold meds and pain relievers for a year. There were lots of pain patches and muscle rubs. I sorted out what my family would use and passed on two large boxes of goods for more friends to take. My Medicare flex card renews on Saturday. I've been making a list of needed over the counter items. With this haul,I can now use my benefits for other wanted items. Dumpsters are a blessing in disguise.

Hi do you live in the New Mexico area?

Hi if you live in the Santa Fe New Mexico area and want to stand against consumer waste like myself please let me know! Yes I am looking for a dumpster diving partner! So far I have been very successful with Dollar Tree. However trying to figure out the other stores has been quite a challenge a lot of them have one of those dumpsters that connects to the store like Kohl's, and Target. I need a partner who's going to investigate and help me save perfectly good items from just ending up in the landfill. We are killing our planet with this waste. You could resell the items or keep them for yourself I don't really care as long as they get used. If you live in Santa Fe New Mexico hit me up on a DM or message me on here. :-) I am trying to stop these companies from throwing out perfectly good things. The stores I'm trying to figure out are Ulta, five below, ross, T.J Maxx, and any other store you think might just throw their stuff. Anyways I could use any bit of help or tips possible as I am new to this. I have been going late at night in the middle of the night. Mainly because that's when security and everybody else is pretty much gone. :-)

Compactors are such a downer

So i go into world market to buy this dog toy i saw a few days ago. Cant find it, so the lady says "oh that was part of our christmas stock which removed yesterday." I ask "removed how" and she says "destroyed it." So i pull around back to check and theres a compactor and a small dumpster that just had some cardboard :(

Found a $400 working pump in a thrift store dumpster.

I check this and it works! Brand new it’s $410. Idk if it’s used or not, it was in the original box tho. 🤷‍♂️ I’ll try to sell it somewhere.

One of my best find this past month!

Only a few were missing manuals, the Brawl has sun damage but the disk was great, the orange thing is a notebook & the ziplock bag was Mario Tennis something for GameCube. I check this place nearly every day & I’ve found so many bangers, last week was a ton PS4 games like Call of Duty & GTA, this past Monday was Legend of the Five Rings collection that I haven’t gone through yet.

Rummaging at the Dump (LA)

Hi there. So I used to go to the dump in Santa Cruz to get art supplies like wood slabs or moving blankets etc. Instead of individual dumpsters I wanted to go to the dump but wasn’t sure where to start/ if I would get in trouble. Any LA specific advice like which dumps or locations or generic advice would help.

DG raccoons update!

I went last night 6pm, with intention of cleaning up area around dumpster, it was garbage day so I knew dumpster was empty.

I went inside and it was 90% cleaned, they even had shovel and rake off to side and I went inside and did a little more cleanup.

I then CLOSED THE DUMPSTER LIDS! And sprinkled cayenne pepper 🌶️ All over the rails and walls where raccoons would jump into the enclosed area.

I looked up while sprinkling and accidentally inhaled some. So my eyes, nose & throat burned for 15 mins but it was well worth it.

Those trash pandas 🐼 are going to get the idea, from the research I did they said to do that!

That dumpster is a gold mine, I just donated hundreds $$ worth of non-food items to local school.. I wanted to save this dumpster as best as possible. 🫶🏼♥️
