Dead Cat Highway 1

Sorry for the bummer Sunday morning post, but wanted to share in case it belongs to anyone reading here. Drove by a dead cat on highway 1 northbound past the Helmcken overpass. Was a darker colored tortoise I think. Called EMCON to pick up after googling. Very sad, but standard PSA plug to please keep your cats indoors.

I hope this reaches the right people. Party at the break water tonight.

We took a late walk along the breakwater, and got to witness a lovely party of some sort. I wanted to take a video to capture how much fun you were all having ☺️♥️.

What are those hoses for?

Maybe naive question, but respectfully, what are those short garden hose things for that a lot of people in Victoria’s unhoused population carry around?

Please help me find a mattress

I need to get a new mattress and I need help. I've been doing a lot of research and it feels impossible.

I don't want a foam mattress - none of those beds in a box like Endy or Casper. Fawcett's is also foam.

I want a traditional spring mattress. From what I understand, the brands that used to be considered good like Seely, Serta, and Simmons quality have gone down a lot. They cut corners and use cheaper materials to up their profit margins and now the mattresses aren't as good and they sag a few months - a few years after you purchase it.

The mattress I would really love is called Winkbed. It's voted #1 by Wirecutter 5 years in a row however it isn't available in Canada at all. Neither is the #2 option.

Does anyone know of any good quality affordable (or even not affordable, I'm desperate tbh) spring mattresses that you can purchase (and preferably try out first) in Victoria?

And does anyone have any experience with Zed's Beds? I see they sell spring mattresses for pretty cheap but I can barely find any reviews about them.

Thank you in advance.

Private Sip and Paint

Does anyone have any recommendations for contacts for private sip and paint nights to host at our house for my mom’s 70th birthday party?

To the lady I was talking with on the Number 6 today

Probably a long shot you see this, but I was really happy to meet another Yugioh fan as an adult. You really made my day, I don't get to gush about my favorite game ever if at all in person lol.

I regret not giving you my number since I nearly missed my stop, but if you read this I'd love to play you on a simulator like Master Duel or even in Person (although as I said, my real life deck is really outdated lol)

What 3-6 hours active walk/hike around town would you recommend?

Good evening, people. Want to go for a hike/ active walk for tomorrow (or Monday) and would like to ask which one you recommend. Preferably 3-6 hours hiking, with transit access, you I live in town for 6 months, I had few walks - Thetis Lake, Dallas Rd seaside, Swan Lake. I want to start going outside little bit more. I would love to hear advice from you. Thank you. Edit: I want to take my camera with me, and will be using AllTrails app for navigation.

Newsstand that carries the NYTimes?

Does anyone know of a newsstand in the city that consistently carries the NY Times? Just trying to prepare for the yearly mega crossword.

Edit: Mega crossword is really only useful in the newspaper and comes out once a year. That's why I'm asking for a newsstand.

Most "affordable" empty lot in the region

I think some at Saanich has gone crazy if they are trying to sell this vs selling it to the neighbours.

Hospital ER wait times?

I know that this is a long shot but does anyone know the current wait times at any of the ERs (RJH or VGH or San Pen) or is anyone waiting in any of these places currently? Thank you

Microneedling Reccs?

Hey all! Does anyone have recommendations for affordable medi-spas or individuals for microneediling?

Bonus points if they are having Black Friday sales or any other promos right now. I have some raised scarring on my face and I think I would benefit from microneedling, but it's super expensive, and I think I will need at least 3 - 5 treatments. Not willing to DIY this one! Ha! Thanks all :)

To the 2 teens who found someone’s $10 at London Drugs yesterday and returned it, thank you for being good humans. The world needs more of you.

Two teens came up to me yesterday asking if I had dropped my $10 bill, and I told them no and thanked them anyway. They proceeded to ask people if the money was theirs and found the woman with a walker who had dropped it (I could tell from her response that it was actually hers).

Thank you for being good people. Teens get crapped on a lot and you were upstanding and caring humans yesterday. We need more people like you.

I'll post an owl pic too! I saw this guy at Topaz Park a few weeks ago.

I think this photo turned out pretty good for a crappy phone camera.

Ladybug hero

To the man on the second floor of the 95 bus this afternoon: I witnessed you continue trying to get a trapped ladybug to crawl onto your hand so you could take it back outside, and although you were not successful, this is the kind of small act that makes me have hope in humanity again. Thank you for putting a smile on my face.

Looking for west shore volunteer opportunities.

Hey friends. Currently have some extra time to help out, was wondering if anyone had any ideas or experiences they could recommend.

I have a vehicle so it's okay if it's a little farther than around langford.

I'm going to look into the food bank and spca, but perhaps someone here may need some help with a Christmas drive and such. Thanks !

Tipping

Was at a Pub with a friend recently and I noticed he tipped on the full bill. I tip before taxes not the final amount. Why tip the government? He never realised this before and will adjust. Do you tip before or after tax?

Victoria Repair Clinics

Are these still a thing? I can't seem to find anything. It always seemed like such an awesome idea - bring your broken stuff and handy people would help you fix it. Now that I finally have something to fix...am I too late?! I have a small toaster oven/air fryer that is just so perfect, I don't want to replace it if I have too. Any input would be super!
