Mines near Nanaimo to visit

Are there any mines near Nanaimo that are open to the public? I hear the area used to have a bit of a coal mining industry, and I geek out over mines and caves.

Bylaw taking photos and ticketing for hockey nets and basketball hoops.

Out walking my dog and noticed bylaw taking photos. Talked to a neighbour and he said the city is ticketing for hockey nets and basketball hoops.

Westwood lake area.

Why do some people hate kids just being kids.

Film Buffs of Nanaimo!

On Sunday November 3rd 1:00 and 7:00, the Nanaimo International Film Screening Society is showing the 2023 comedy “Thelma” in the Shaw Auditorium in the Nanaimo Conference. Tickets $15 at the door or online. You can also become a NIFSS member online at nifss.com.

The film presents a refreshingly lighter look at the lives of seniors. When a scam phone call cons Thelma out of thousands of dollars (thinking she is bailing out her not-quite-mature grandson), she sets out to find the swindler and get her revenge.

Come out and support film in Nanaimo!

Following the screening of Thelma, the society will hold its first AGM and screen the short film Motherland, which depicts an Iranian immigrant in the US during 1979 at the height of the Iran Hostage crisis when he goes on a trip to meet his fiance's parents and ends up confronting the realities of what it means to be an Iranian immigrant in a patriotic post-Vietnam America. All members encouraged to attend!

Moving to Nanaimo in January—Looking for Safe Living Advice!

Hi Nanaimo! I’m moving from the mainland to start a job downtown in January and could use some advice on finding a safe place to live.

I'm a single woman in my 30s, coming from Vancouver, so I’m familiar with issues around homelessness and substance use. Still, I’m pretty cautious (maybe overly so) when it comes to safety—I'm used to avoiding being out alone after dark unless I’m with someone. I’ll also have a car with me, so I’d love to find a place with covered or at least secure parking.

I’d prefer to live near downtown for a short commute, but I’m torn: should I avoid downtown altogether and look north, or is the convenience of being close to work worth it? I've heard mixed things about safety, especially on Reddit, where it can feel quite gloom and doom. But when I talk to people who know Nanaimo, they have a much more positive take.

I have a few potential units on Selby Street and am curious about Stewart Avenue too. Is it generally safe around these areas, and would I be okay with parking across the street if my building doesn’t have covered spots? Any tips for someone new to Nanaimo, especially as a woman moving here alone, would be amazing. Thank you all in advance for your help! 😊

Curious what the turnout in your neighborhood was like. We had under 100 kids in the Diver Lake area.

Dickinson Crossing Tim Horton’s

There’s a lady that works drive through, I’m sure she’s lovely. But, holy sweet lord, the first syllable of her initial greeting is ear drum piercing. Gets me every time. Does anyone else have this experience?

Racist encounter at Maffeo Sutton park

To the white guy in his 20’s wearing an orange jumpsuit prisoner Halloween costume that crossed by my bf and I in the parking lot at maffeo Sutton park tonight, that shouted the N word twice at my biracial boyfriend tonight completely unprovoked and randomly, fuck you. Doesn’t matter if you were drunk or what, we didn’t even say a word to you, just walked past.

My boyfriend is half white half black with an Afro, and we moved from Van to Nanaimo in may and since living here he’s encountered much more racism than in Vancouver. Really making us regret moving here. I grew up on the island and take pride in islanders being good people but it’s becoming clear to me that it’s not that way as I thought. People need to do better.

Self-Promotion Fri-yays!

Hey everyone!

We're excited to announce a new initiative in the r/Nanaimo subreddit to help our community grow and thrive! We have been seeing a growing interest in users sharing skills and services, and thought it would be better to have them all located in one spot, rather than randomly throughout the subreddit.

To keep things organized and easy to find, please let's use this thread for all service advertisements.

What services/skills can you share?

It's been a minute or two since I've seen Halloween in Nanaimo - do people still take their Jack-o-lanterns out to Shady Mile after?

Arts-based research opportunity: Contraceptive care

Hi all --

I am a PhD candidate at UBC's School of Nursing and am conducting this research as a part of my dissertation. We are interested in understanding more about the way that we talk about contraceptives and how that might impact contraceptive care. At this time, we are recruiting cisgender women and people who can get pregnant to participate in arts-based research to discuss their experiences with controlling their fertility and/or contraceptive care. Participants will be asked to create a collage related to contraceptive care and experiences which will then guide a one on one virtual interview. Supplies for the collage can be mailed. An honorarium is provided.

Please see the attached poster for more information regarding inclusion criteria and what to do if you are interested. If you have any further questions, please contact me at kermar@student.ubc.ca

Please note: We are also recruiting health care providers that currently prescribe contraceptives in British Columbia. If you are interested in participating as a health care provider, please see the following link.

Internet Service Providers in Nanaimo recommendations

Our Telus plan is expiring. We currently have internet and basic cable TV and were paying $100 all in/month. Now with the contract ending, it is over $200/month. I phoned them up and they had no other offers for me.

Though we have been with Telus for years, we are willing to switch if we can find the right deal. I know there are internet resellers out there (ie. Oxio) and we would be happy with one of them, but would like to find one that is already using Telus wires (as opposed to Shaw/Rogers). Our reason being is that our old house is not wired for Rogers/Shaw, our basement is a gong show, and I don't want the hassle of having some technician coming in and being up in my business all over our basement etc.

Is there a TELUS reseller I could use that would be pretty simple/straightforward since we already have Telus in our house? We are in south Nanaimo.

Cheers!

Is there a need for non medical home companionship?

I've been thinking of starting a home companion business catered to a variety of ages though I know mostly elderly folks would be interested.

Like hire a friend or hire a grandchild type of thing.

Basically, I come to your home to hangout and do crafts or whatever hobbies you enjoy, or I meet you and we go for a walk and talk about whatever you want to, go out for a coffee, whatever really (no NSFW).

Could be for lonely people, mentally unwell people that struggle to make friends but desire human relationships, for elderly people that dont have family nearby, executives that work too much and dont make time to find friends but want human connection, etc.

No medical care would be offered, just pure, goodhearted companionship.

Thoughts?

Rent in Nanaimo.

After reading a post about rents in Nanaimo. I looked up the rent vs. Gross income suggested ratio. 30% is the suggested amount of Gross income that should go towards rent. Is anyone getting close to that ratio? If you are working a full time job at minimum wage you could afford about 800$ per month.
