What laptops qualify as Ultrabooks?

Ultrabook is a specification and brand developed by Intel for a class of high-end subnotebooks which are designed to feature reduced bulk without compromising performance and battery life. They use low-power Intel Core processors, solid-state drives, and unibody chassis to help meet these criteria. Due to their limited size, they typically omit common laptop features such as optical disc drives and Ethernet ports.

What can you expect from an Ultrabook?

With respect to Ultrabooks, these computers refer to a specific category of laptops created by Intel to compete with the increasingly popular tablets and the well-designed MacBook Air. Ultrabooks are ultimately meant to offer a reasonable compromise between portability and performance. For instance, while netbooks may be extremely portable, there is no question that these same netbooks do not operate at a high performance level. Ultrabooks, however, are extremely portable and boast more muscle than that of the typical netbook on the market today.

How much do Ultrabooks cost?

They vary. If they are brand new usually between $1000-$1500. Refurbished ones could go as low as $700-1000 if it's the current generation.

Are Ultrabooks a good option for you?

Without a doubt, Ultrabooks are an excellent choice if portability and design are highly important to your lifestyle. For example, if you travel often, or if you use your laptop to write, conduct Web research, and perform similar activities, an Ultrabook is definitely the way to go. However, if you require the use of heavy graphics and portability is not a priority for you, it might be in your best interest to consider other options.

Need to hear from someone that has used a Dell XPS 13 and Solidworks

Is there anyone in here that has tried running Solidworks on an XPS 13 Plus? Yes, I know ultrabooks are a far throw from capable workstations, but the question still stands.

Tired of the XPS13 battery life. What are my other options?

I've been using an XPS13 for a number of years now. First the 9350 (~2015) and then the 9310 (~2021)

I love them, they have been great. But OMG the battery life is ATROCIOUS.

Granted, I have been running the i7 / 4k touch model both times, but it shouldn't be called a portable. I get 3.5hrs out of mine. Some occasional heavy usage running a JVM and other work tools, but mostly it's just Teams/Zoom calls and MS Office apps.

Also, the webcam. It's laughable and pretty much unforgivable. Yes I know the tiny bezels make it tough. I'd love a truly great webcam though.

What are my other options?

-I don't need the 4k touchscreen. It's cool but I really don't need it.

-Definitely need the USB-C thunderbolt, as I have a dock at home & the office for that, otherwise I don't care about the ports, but I'm not against a USB-A and/or HDMI

-Not fussed about moving to an AMD chip if that's going to help, otherwise I am considering an i5 purely for battery life concerns.

-Please. An actually good webcam.

-Minimum 16gb RAM. Would love an option with 32gb for the occasional heavy lifting day but they only seem to pair with i7/i9 type chips.

-I do like the form factor. The tiny bezels are lovely and it's great for travel. I would consider a different size to meet all my other requirements.

-I'd love to keep the weight down where possible.

I've been trawling "best ultrabook" websites for a while and keep getting lost, so any help would be really appreciated, but I'm close to switching over to a Macbook (Windows user since 3.1)

They both have full hd displays but the asus is 14 inches and the hp is 13.3 inches

They both have the same price 950$

Xps 13 (9310) or galaxy book pro 360?

Split between the two

I found a refurbished i5 16gb xps13 off the Dell outlet website for the same price as a new 2in1 galaxy book pro i7 16gb.

Originally had the galaxy book on preorder, and i have a samsung phone, so i thought it made sense. Did a little digging and read complaints about the hardware of the GBP and overall pitfalls of having such a slim design. When i did the same for the xps, ive read constant complains of dookie software bugs and dell bloatware that drag the laptop down.

Any tips to sway me one way or another would be greatly appreciated.

Context: itll be used for media consumption, research papers, zoom meetings, valorant, etc. Ive never bought a windows laptop, so i dont really know whats good or whats not. Currently using a 6y/o macbook air that can barely keep up with the tasks i run in the background

New Ultra Portable Advice

Hi guys

Just came across this subreddit so thought I'd also ask here too.

I've been looking around for a new lightweight device to replace my Lenovo Yogo 910. This is hands down the best laptop I have ever owned and I'll be sad to see it go, but it's due unfortunately.

I've listed my must haves that I'm not willing to compromise on, as well as nice to haves that I'd love to have but if they're missing I'll learn to deal with it.

Must Have

  • Detachable Keyboard
  • Touch Screen
  • Windows Hello face and/or fingerprint
  • Type-C thunderbolt also supporting power
  • WWLAN
  • Whole day battery
  • Display must support itself when detached from keyboard (Kickstand or cover if needed)

Nice to have

  • Weight <1kg
  • Back-lit keyboard
  • Bluetooth keyboard
  • Thin bezel
  • Fan-less
  • Pen support (Pen with tip)
  • 4k screen

Usage
Microsoft Office
Media Consumption General internet browsing

Now after reading all that you're probably thinking just a tablet right. Well exactly. I'm looking for a Windows tablet. The Surface Pro devices are great, but that massive bezel just kills it for me. I wouldn't be able to stare at that all day long. Dell make a few models that fit most of my asks, but probably the one that really catches my eye is the Microsoft Surface Pro X. The ARM processor doesn't worry me at all as all the apps I use will be natively supported.

I just want to know if any other devices come to mind when looking at my asks? Anything perhaps scheduled for release later this year that I should wait to check out?

Apologies for the long post, and thank you in advance for any advice.

Light, small laptop for traveling and multipurpose after COVID

Hi all, was hoping I could get some recommendations on a laptop/ultrabook.

I'm looking for a small and lightweight laptop that I will use on travel. I have a powerful custom built PC at home, and am in need of small but capable computing power on the go.

Will be mostly used for:

  • Web browsing (I like having lots of tabs open, not gonna lie)
  • Office work (Microsoft office, excel, spreadsheets, PDF's, etc)
  • Schoolwork (computer programming, running modeling applications (mostly systems diagrams, some CAD if necessary)
  • watching movies and netflix
  • some light gaming (a 920M used to suit all my needs so not looking to run any AAA titles here, just respectable framerates in games like dota and some arcade style games)

Want:

  • 13 inch if possible
  • not against macs, but having used PC's my whole life that's more what I'm used to
  • decent battery
  • decent price (Trying to stay around $1200, but open to moving that up if there are good options)
  • at least 12-16 GB of ram. My uses will be more CPU/RAM intensive than GPU intensive.

Had my eye on the Samsung Galaxy Ion 13, but I heard the 13 inch version can't upgrade the ram capacity and 8GB is a little low for my uses. I definitely wouldn't mind a samsung device though, since I have the galaxy buds and a samsung phone.

Ryzen 5500u or 1165G7 for mainly web browsing - which chip would you recommended?

Let's assume the same laptop but with either one of those chips - which would be the better choice oif you would be mainly looking for a CPU that handles lots of web browsing tabs open at the same time. Some of those tabs could be very CPU intensive, like browser games that would run in the background. Other tabs could be news articles for later to read. I'm looking for a smooth experience for switching back and forth lots of those open tabs. Would I be better off with a CPU that offers more cores like AMD or is the high single-thread speed of Intel more important? Thanks for your recommendations!

AMD 7 4800U vs 2-in-1 I7-1165G7

Currently in the market for a developer ultrabook (no macbook or thinkpad) I also watch a lot of movies and I'm always on the road. I was thinking of buying a 14 inch laptop, minimum 16gb RAM, 500SSD and Wifi 6 (want to try out cloud gaming in the future)

I've found the lenovo yoga series very interesting. But I'm wondering if a 2-in1 is good/if you actually use it for content consumption like movies and TV shows. Is it worth the tradeoff of 4 cores and battery life?

Or do you have any other recommendations? Thanks!

New Ultrabook recommendations

I'm currently in the market to replace by 2017 Razer Blade Stealth and I am looking for some suggestions.

My #1 requirement is that I need to be able to have 3 external monitors while docked, and if at all possible only have to dock using one cable/connector. Currently I'm achieving this by using the 1st gen Razer Core. From my research I'm pretty sure I can still use the Core for current Razer models, so an advantage to just buying a newer version of the Stealth.

- Minimum 16gb of RAM. I would like 32Gb, but it isn't a deal breaker.
- i5, i7 Ryzen, doesn't matter really, nothing I do on the laptop is processor intensive.
- Prefer Win10Pro, I will upgrade Home to pro if I have to (ie another Razer)
- Light, as I carry it around everywhere I go.
- NO XPS. Although I have personally had two of them in the past we have had a seriously bad run of them for 3 years now at work and I've banned them.
Graphics aren't a big deal either. 1080p display is perfectly fine. No need for touch.

Thanks for any and all input.

New ultrabook suggestions?

Hi all,

I currently have Lenovo N22 as my backup/travel notebook and while it's OK for basic browsing, I'm looking to replace it with something better specced.

First, pluses and minuses of my N22:

  • cheap (so not a disaster when lost, stolen or damaged)
  • sturdily built and spill resistant
  • good keyboard
  • lightweight at 2.6lb
  • poor quality display
  • too weak CPU (Celeron N3050) / too little RAM (4GB) to watch movies comfortably, browse the web really smoothly or do anything that requires a bit of processing power

I'm looking for something that will meet the following criteria

  • 11-12.5" good quality display, doesn't matter if touch-enabled
  • min 8GB RAM, 128GB storage (or less but upgradeable to 8 and 128)
  • proper keyboard (not some tabletsy afterthought)
  • not a Chromebook or MacBook
  • nice to have: AMD CPU rather than Intel
  • nice to have: proven/documented capability of running on Linux
  • as my main machine (ThinkPad E495, arguably an ultrabook itself) cost me ~€700, it would make sense for the smaller guy to not exceed €600 (new, not second-hand or refurb)

Anything comes to mind?

TIA

How much hot do ultrabooks get?

Hi! I'll probably need to get a powerful lightweight laptop in the future, and I'm wondering how much hot they get as CPU temperature is always a concern for me.

I have been thinking of just getting a MacBook Air with the new M1 processor which seems to be very powerful and it doesn't get hot, but, I prefer Linux over any other OS, and Linux (including all its available software) is still not compatible with ARM based processors like the M1.

So, I wonder how much hot do ultrabooks get in general. I would get one with AMD processor.

Macbook Air Late 2020 (Newest version)

Hey there

Currently I am running a MBP Retina mid 2012 thats slowly going to die, thats why I am after a new portable laptop.

I love a good sharp screen and less kg to carry around. So now that the new M1 chip from Apple is released I thought I could give the Macbook Air a go. When upgrading it to 16GB / 256Gb id cost me 1300CHF.

I like the simplicity of a Mac and I am afraid, that going back to Windows i'd be overwhelmed with the amount of work I'd have to put in for drivers etc.

I use the laptop for office, web, youtube and I would like to game using a shadow pc.

What does the community has to say to this idea? I am open to windows, if you feel like there would be a way better and/ or cheaper model having the same build quality as my current MBP and about the same screen I'd be happy to switch.

Thank you a lot in advance

Ultrabook that has potential for being corebooted, Librebooted, etc?

Hello!

I'm looking for a cheap laptop that I can do lightweight computation on but is also something of a thin client to my servers. I would prefer one such as this: https://pine64.com/product/14″-pinebook-pro-linux-laptop-iso-uk-keyboard/?v=0446c16e2e66 .

In fact, the following two laptops are the best options I've seen so far:

  1. 14″ Pinebook Pro Linux Laptop
  2. Asus C201PA are the two best options I've seen so far.)

Are there any more recommendations that share these characteristics:

  • coreboot friendly
  • cheap
  • possible to do lightweight computation
  • can provide full featured interfaces to servers (KVM-over-IP, KVM-over-RS232, KVM-over-console, SSH, web interface, etc, etc)

Thanks for any tips!!

Which Ultrabook should I get

Hi Everyone !

I am 21 curently I am working in Logistic Department and hopefully I will go to school next year so I am looking for 13” - 14” (max) ultrabook. I am not going to play games or editing some hardcore stuff there. I was looking at DELL XPS 13 (2019/2020) but I found out many users after 1 year have overheating problems or many other small issues. Which is really bad joke for Ultrabook that cost 1300 €.

I would like to own something reliable, good design, can be little bit pricey, that is not a problem. But most important something that I can depend on.

Work (coding, statistics, WSL2 etc) heavy and casual gaming laptop! (Budget - 1500-1800€)

Hei everyone,

My 2015 MBP finally gave up on me and I am on the lookout for a new one. But this time around I am looking for a windows laptop.

I would mainly work (coding, statistics, WSL2 etc) on it and only use it for casual gaming (Civ 6, Stellaris, CK 3). I already have a Ryzen 7/3700X+RTX 3070 system built, so having a top-notch graphics card in the laptop is not needed.

Budget is ideally within 1500€ or maximum of 1800€.

What would be nice:

  • 15.6" or above, good display (300 nits or more)
  • portable (<2 kgs), USB-C charging
  • decent battery while working (5-6 hours +)
  • good thermals OR very low fan noises
  • webcam

Though if there is a really good laptop without a webcam I can take that too.

PS- Can't get Elekutronics or other variants of Tongfang chassis in Finland.

Thanks!

Undecided to pick an Ultrabook

Hello! My name is Mihael and I'm looking for a slim reliable good-looking laptop mainly for online courses, projects at University, and internet surfing. But at the same time, I would like to play occasionally some light games like Dota 2 or CS:GO (but not on the very best-looking preset) without damaging the unit in the long run. I have to say that gaming is not a factor of choice for the laptop.

Speaking of budget, it will be around 1000-1200 euros, but I don't think this is too relevant, because in every country the prices may vary.

I was thinking about Asus's new line-up of Zenbooks, the UX425EU with the new 11th gen of Intel, and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 powered by AMD 4800u. The new laptop should have 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

What are your thoughts about these models and what would you recommend? I also accept other alternatives.

Thank you!

Ultrabook for Gaming/School

Hey guys, I'm in school right now and I need a new laptop. I'm looking for something that can gaming at 1080p with decent frames. It would be awesome if it had 1tb, but i would be fine using an external SSD. I also need decent battery. I don't really have a budget, just give me the best that you guys can think of. Any recommendations? Thanks everyone!

Need help to find an Ultrabook.

Hey guys,

I hope I can get some advice from you. I wanted to get myself a Microsoft Surface 7 Pro, because I liked the 6 Pro already. Now I am wondering, if it is more worth to go for an ultrabook, because I would buy a keyboard and a pen too. I mostly want to use the computer/tablet for Multimedia uses: Youtube, Netflix, surfing, etc. But also play some games with low requirements (like Magic Arena). The game is running on the surface 6 pro in a OK way. So a little more GPU Power would be fine. What can I get in a ~700€ price range? I started looking for a Asus Zenbook, but don't know if it is my best bet.
