IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts!
For IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts.
Blog posts are encouraged.
Tips:
When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated.
When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. (Comparison video)
The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. Never use nail polish remover (acetone).
When reinstalling Windows, try the Lenovo disc images, as longer battery times have been reported, probably due to custom drivers.

Best members,
Im using IBM/Lenovo laptops for years and done almost 10 Years with a used T520 i7..
As W11 is coming on need to replace my T520 i7 and the T510 i5 of my wife.
No gaming, just some surfing, email an light youtube video. And they need to last for years again.
We have found these 2 to replace.. but which would be best option?
Need some feedback for Pro and Cons..
Lenovo T15p, i7, 10750u, Nvidia GTX1050, 32GB, 1920x1080
or
Lenovo P15, i7, 10850h, Nvidia Quadro T1000, 32GB, 1920x1080
Price is almost same.. get warranty for 2 years too. We know the P is a bit heavier but we dont mind that.
Only thing is we dont want is a noisy blowing laptop on our laps when in use.
Let me know what you think will be best option.
Hi lovely people, i've been reading your very helpful opinions the last few weeks, so first of all thank you.
My 2018 Dell XPS 9570, as much as i love it, has started failing (very strange issues with heat and maybe battery, which is new) so i'm replacing it with a powerful laptop and i feel lucky in being able to spend a good amount in it mainly because i will probably be using it for 7+ years like my previous laptops.
I've decided on the ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 (Intel) after some investigation and i had some last questions which can finish setting my mind at ease before ordering, which i'll do from Portugal in about a week. Thank you if you have the time to help me!
First of all, more of a comment really: i wonder why there aren't many reviews of this model (outside of this sub), maybe because people usually get them from their job? or jump to the P1?
CPU: 155H vs 185H. I'm very much in the camp that wouldn't get a dumb costly upgrade for something 3% better, so my first choice was the Core Ultra 7 155H... but i see i could get the Core Ultra 9 185H for about 15-20% more perf, and that sounds quite reasonable for a long-term machine. My worry is that this would get hotter and/or affect the battery life. Do you know if in general this makes for worse thermals and such? In heavy workloads or always? I clearly remember not going for i9 in 2018 just for this reason (reviews said the 9570 wasn't designed for such heat-making chip). In short: does it make sense at all if i want moar power or is it actually bad and/or it's not that much difference (and my numbers are wrong)?
RAM: mixing sticks. I was thinking of getting it with 1x 32GB and just buy another equivalent stick soon enough when i yearn to go back to 64GB which is what i currently have... but i have some vague recollection that mixing RAMs isn't the best?? does anyone know exactly what sticks come with this machine? otherwise i guess i could go with 1x16 and get 2x32 separately but it seems like a waste. Of course i would get the same speed (DDR5 5600mHz), but not sure if brands or other specifics being different would spell trouble. Also note that in Lenovo pt difference vs base option is not that drastic, otherwise i'd get that and just replace it.
GPU: just iGPU. This would be the first time i'd have an iGPU and only that, it's weird to see that it's only like 30% better (benchmarks are very simplistic yadda yadda) than the 1050 Ti Max-Q in my 7-year-old laptop lol, but i don't game much! and if i do it's old games, will i be fine?? just hold my hand and tell me i'll be okay. Does it matter if in the future i may want to connect the laptop to 2 monitors (let's say FHD)?
SSD: "Performance" variant. Does anyone know what the "Performance" label changes if at all? should i ignore it and save 30 eur or is there an actual significant difference? The models offered are "512 GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 {Performance} TLC Opal", that word is the only diff.
nit-picky but i see there are 100W and 135W charger options; i'm guessing the latter is thicker? if the first is good enough should i just get that one? what if i go with no dGPU but the Core Ultra 9? (though if possible i'll undervolt it). Also, first time ever charging a laptop with USB-C so have patience for dumb questions plz.
Aside: other options i had in mind were Framework (VERY tempted but ended up wanting something a tad more battle-tested), ThinkPad X1 Carbon (but i prefer power over lightweight, and soldered RAM is cringe, hope it's not a problem in future gens with new CAMM2 modules), ThinkPad P1? (too expensive! unless you know of a way to get it cheaper to Portugal). If there's others i should consider i'd be grateful you mention them, my restrictions are i do not trust HP (based on own experience), has to ship to Portugal, has to run Linux well, i want more than FHD.

).Didn't want to make this longer but ask for anything i haven't specified here.
Thank you for any knowledge you can bestow upon this humble still-thinkpad-less pleb, very excited to join the cult!
I have an thinkpad 10 which has windows 10 but when I try to boot into the bios I just get a black illuminated screen. Think bios config gives me an invalid parameter error when I try to disable secure boot. What should I do?
I recently picked up a refurbished ThinkPad and have been loving it so far.
Here are the specs: CPU: i7-10510U RAM: 32GB DDR4 2666MHz GPU: GeForce MX330 2GB
I’m running Fedora 41 with Wayland, but I’m struggling to get proper drivers for the MX330. It’s functional, but performance is limited. I’d really prefer to stick with Wayland—has anyone here managed to get the MX330 working well on it?
The picture contains Ubuntu 24.04, but I switched to Fedora 41.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this setup and any advice you might have!
hi! im feeling so stressed because i have an urgent work that needs to be passed tomorrow and my laptop is charging based on the orange light but wont turn on when power butten is pushed :(
I'm looking to upgrade from my T470s to an X1 Carbon 9th Gen. Price range seem to be between $450 and $550. Most seem to have 16GB RAM and 500 GB SSD.
Does this look like the pretty standard config, is it worth it to move up to the I7 processor (I'm not what you would consider a heavy user, are there likely to be any open RAM slots if I want to add RAM and how easy are the to upgrade RAM, HD, add additional batteries and that sort of thing?
Finally, anyplace beyond Amazon and EBAY that has a good selection of the machines?
I switched from macbook air m2 to thinkpad T14 gen5, because 64gb macbook is too expensive, but i like Thinkpad + Pop os much more than macbook!
Hello, i may need a quick replacement for my asus over the top 5 year old laptop, and i'm on a tight budget + want to go lowtech. I'm intersted in buying a used thinkpad, and install linux on it.
I'll need to use it for graphic programs (Krita, Adobe softwares...) and some light-ish gaming (indie games + minecraft)
I'm a little lost in the possibilities and requirements.
I'm ok with upgrading RAM and SSD obviously.
Any recomandations? thanks in advance :)
I dont know how fix this
Здравствуйте! Хочу попросить помощи с ноутбуком lenovo thinkpad z61t Нуже bios mod для удаления белого списка, для подключения wi-fi модулей, так же интересует можно ли поставить процессор t9600, p9800
Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right place, so please tell me if there is a more suited one.
I have a thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 20KG-S3W819 with S/N PF-1GZ5NQ that is kinda bricked after a BIOS-reset. When turning it on, there's a bootloop: Black, then Lenovo screen, then it turns off, then black, lenovo and all again. It doesn't allow me to get into the BIOS, so I guess that it's kinda broken....
I've heard that there's a crisis mode and saw many tutorials, but none of them had exactly what I had. Most of them tell to rename a .fd file to <name of the crisis>.bin, but I only have a .FL1 and .FL2-file. After seeing that they are just update files and not complete bios images, I wandered around the forums here to find a BIOS-File for my computer.
I formatted a usb-stick to F32 with a partition size of +128M and put the .bin file inside. After that, I did the Fn+R thing, but it didn't work. Same old bootloop...
So, I have 2 questions:
Thanks in advance
Hi everyone, I am planning to buy a second hand ThinkPad E490 with an i5 8265U, 8 gb ddr4 and 256gb samsung nvme is this a good choice? It is in good condition and it also falls into my buget. I like to use linux mint myself and I use my laptop more for standard daily use so the specs look good. I currently have a very cheap hp with an amd 3020e that I bought for school (because I needed something cheap for schoolwork) it works fine is not the fastest but works fine but I now get a lot of problems with the screen that often randomly shows no display or when I move my screen no longer gives an image, So I'm looking for a laptop that is a bit sturdier and lasts longer and that also has better performance.
Though these are incomparable, the purchase prices are close between E14 Gen 5, i5-1335U and X1 Gen 9, i7-1185G7 in Egypt (given the scarcity of imports). I am a full stack web developer, so currently choosing between them. Yes, I did thorough comparison on Gemini, ChatGPT, Deepsee.
But wanted to here from ThinkPad Family.
Hi, been getting this disk error 2100 on my win10 machine. Already reseated the ssd.
Attempting to plug a usb with any linux distro won't boot from it. It always goes black for a bit and then sends me back to the boot selection. I have tired setting the different boot options legacy, uefi, both, with and without csm but same result everywhere.
How do I get access to the data on my drive? How to boot from my linux usbs? Why is it not workin? What have I missed trying?
Hello brothers. I'm thinking of buying the lenovo thinkpad E16 gen 2. Ryzen 7735hs, 32gb ram, 1tb, 1080 screen. In my region this laptop is around 1500 usd. Does anyone know if this price is good or is it better to go for a cheaper thinkbook with similar specs?
Hi friends, I was thinking of buying a ThinkPad T480 i5 laptop for $160 .Are there any tips or alternatives that are stronger or newer but with the same durability and preferably with a better screen and the same update capabilities?
Bought a W510 untested, and seemingly with a black screen when booted. Removed the ram stick in the accessible slot and it started to work, replaced it with another stick and again stopped working. Am I an idiot or is it broken?

I have spent nearly the past week de-cluttering my living situation. A huge component of this was my desktop I had been using for the past six years +.
Since I was about 12 years old, I have been devoted to the consumption of tech. My dad helped me purchase the components to build my first PC, and for the following 20 years, it had been an endless chase for the newest, best, most powerful component to add to my rig. To my dismay, I have always been poor, and the *newest, best, most powerful* was always *just* out of reach. Still, I continued the chase. It was an unending process, I would consistently research electronics - not only PC stuff - and find new creative ways to blow incredible amounts of cash (especially because, as I said, I have always been poor.) I have, in the past, chosen PC component acquisition over romantic-interest's needs, over family gatherings, over rent payments, over bill payments... I have dug myself into a veritable bottomless pit with my spending on electronics. I have loans with atrocious interest rates devoted to this addiction which I am still - and will be for a long time yet - repaying.
This past week - the week leading to my 32nd trip around our local star - I decided I AM DONE.
I decided that the best gift I could give myself would be to remove the chains from as many worldly possessions as I possibly could. This was *hard*. Surprisingly hard to accomplish. My poor car - a 2014 Ford C Max Energi - is already full of a plethora of shit I use every day for my job as an electrical contractor, so adding even more to its load was difficult. I took so many trips to so many different places to try my best to repurpose my accumulated belongings. I went to thrift stores, computer stores, camera stores, called people on Craigslist... And finally, after nearly a week of work, I feel *free*.
It wasn't only my main rig that I felt was holding me down. There were so many items I did not need, but felt some strange attachment to. I had two MacBook Pros (2012 & 2013) I had put Sonoma & W11 on, 5x old Windows laptops of various makes, countless video games, game systems, endless amounts of clothing, footwear, various small electronics, the list goes on and on and on and on...
I got all of this shit out of my living situation. It took so many trips (because my car was already full of stuff I really can't get rid of). But now, after all the work that went into this week's long project, I finally feel *free*. Or, at least, as free as I have felt for 20 years.
Now, I sit here at my desk, typing out this post on my T430s, reveling in the glory of finally freeing myself of my addiction. I have promised myself, the universe, my cats, my mom, that I will never delve back into the depths of that endless chase again.
This laptop. Its enough. Its enough for me.
Love my x230, still very usable today. IPS screen really makes a difference. i5 and 12 gb of ram.
Bought the AX200 and was trying to replace WiFi on both Thinkpad, however I find that only WiFi available but no bluetooth.
Both laptops are already using whitelist BIOS (tested with 3rd party Intel 72650MW already), for the 7260 I blocked PIN51 and bluetooth also usable, then I tried to swap with the mini PCI-E AX200 (yes, not M2), no matter I block the last pin or not on the card, bluetooth never there (under Linux there should be USB bluetooth device). The new card is checked with another Fujitsu laptop (same generations) and I am able to see AX200 bluetooth device under USB which proves that card is working correctly.
Searched for some old posts, someone mentioned on X220 the original bluetooth module needs to be removed (I couldn't find the one for X201), did that but still not able to see it, is there any other trick I need to do to make it working?
Apparently it still boots up, though on the 4th or 5th time, It is a thinkpad t410s and is listed for like 15 bucks.
I am on the fence about getting a X1 carbon gen 11 with the 1335u used on ebay for $690 vs the t14 1365 u Gen 4 for $600 on ebay as well. I almost purchased a MacBook pro m4 but realized that it won't serve me well in school because im majoring in finance and accounting. I want to know of the two which one is future proof, my concerns are 1. when running accounting software, code which one will perform better over time and not overheat and throttle down(my friend ran an accounting software on a macbook air and it throttled the cpu.) 2. which one has a more satisfying build quality / keyboard I used to be a m1 MacBook air user and the keyboard is very important to me because you interact with it so much. 3. what other ThinkPads do you recommend that fits my criteria I am very open to all ideas I am not a wasteful person so I want to make the right choice now and use it as long as I can. One last thing price is very important to me I want a 600-900 dollar used refurbished laptop from ebay because one thing I learned on this sub is for the people in the know you can get very good laptops for very cheap because corps sell their old stuff so the better for the consumer.
This is my charger from a used t480 I bought. It was working for a few months but just now it stopped and the little stub at the end overheats. I can’t seem to tell what is the wattage on the charger, it only says 52 something Wh? Nor do I know what that stub is doing, it says 65W on it. I thought if it was truly 65W then it would charge fine, but maybe something is wrong? Any help is appreciated.
Should I buy this laptop? I plan to run linux and use it for light gaming and work, also upgrade it. Is this good buy?
