IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts!
For IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts.

Tips:
When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated.
When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. (Comparison video)
The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. Never use nail polish remover (acetone).
When reinstalling Windows, try the Lenovo disc images, as longer battery times have been reported, probably due to custom drivers.

When I bought my first Carbon X1 ThinkPad a few years ago, I didn't think I would get used to it. Today I love it and would never want to go back to using a touch pad again. For those people who use a conventional old fashioned mouse, I can't understand why they might prefer it. I primarily use a wireless Lenovo ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II which does not have a pad and I don't miss having that pad at all.
Using a new King Sener battery on my t480s. OS is win 11. Old battery was genuine Lenovo and sleep always worked well. I am finding things are a little bit inconsistent with sleep management with the new battery. Sometimes I will wake up to use the laptop and battery drain is 0%. Is this common? Would it be better to switch to Linux possibly?
So I've got a X13s that I wanted to clean reinstall Windows on, rather than the Lenovo recovery drive. But the ARM iso doesn't seem to boot? I installed it using Rufus, and it just doesn't do anything, reboots without any error messages. Any help would be appreciated!
I recently upgraded my Thinkpad L420’s CPU to an i7-2860QM and since I have not been able to boot into any OS. I was going to reinstall Arch but am not able to boot into the installer (I am able to get to the first page where you select what options you want, like install or boot into an existing OS). Similar thing when I try to install Mint. I’m able to boot into the BIOS as well, so I’m not exactly sure what I should be looking for anymore.
I have a Thinkpad W540 that I use for work and I'd like to upgrade to an ssd. I'm hesitating between a Samsung 870 EVO 500 2.5" Sata SSD, or a Transcend 480GB m.2 Sata SSD. I don't know which is better.
Thank you everyone for any suggestions! Really appreciate it.
I need both internal and external batteries.
My bios is junk. I could try and reflash or get motherboard on eBay;~$250. Anyone have any experience with buying parts on eBay. I’m worried that I’ll get bad parts
Has anyone successfully reflashed their UEFI chip?
Hi there, has anyone encountered T495 issues with Windows 11 freezing?
I've been a long-time Linux user and due to upgrading to a T14 Gen 5, I've decided to run Windows 11 on the T495. However I've noticed that the T495 freezes randomly (no BSOD or minidump or event log) both during light gaming and desktop use. Temperatures are OK-ish - 55-75C, drivers are from Lenovo's support page, BIOS is up to date and Windows updates have been applied. No issues were noticed when using Linux, i.e it's unlikely to be a hardware issue.
Has anyone experienced it and if yes, how did y'all resolve it?
Hi there, have some unfortunate news, my R31 isn’t posting after freezing and locking up in XP. I held the power button but nothing happened so I had to remove the battery. Upon plugging it in the laptop turns on instantly by itself and the fans ramp up but nothing shows up on screen. I reseated, and cleaned the ram slots but that didn’t help either. Another thing is when turning on, the speakers make a grinding / popping sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I just got this machine. ☹️
$188, 2 day shipping w/ prime. Tempting, but the reviews seem mixed...
Have any of you purchased one on Amazon? How did it turn out?
Thanks!
Edit: Here's a link to the laptop on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-i5-7300-Windows-Renewed/dp/B0BN39DBVZ/ref=asc_df_B0BN39DBVZ?mcid=6cfe104f8a803b13a266e4d1aeffecd9&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693415510935&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1808216178293966662&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031554&hvtargid=pla-1931991787615&psc=1
P14S was showing no signs of life, opened her up and had a look. After some time, found this chip that looks like it's shit the bed.
Is it repairable?
I recently got myself an X13 Gen4 AMD with Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U and Radeon 780M, 32GB RAM. I am extremely satisfied with the laptop, my main concern was the display being only 1920x1200 - I switched from a surface pro - but due to scaling the displayed area is basically the same. One strange thig is that I can't find my exact product number (21J4S14U00) in PSREF... Anyone has insights why?
And to my recent problem: I can't install the 1.31 BIOS update. I get the error "BIOS Update Utility - 10/11 Canceled by user or the update installation could not proceed due to AC power not plugged in, low battery or other reason." Can't find anything useful in the logs... AC is plugged in, battery is 79% "fully smart charged" and I definitively have not clicked on cancel. Could anyone help me with this?
Hey,
So right now I am wondering about these two laptops. I know that one of them is a workstation and the other a gaming laptop, but I was wondering which one would be best for my needs.
Both of them are around the same price of 2400€
P1 specs: Ultra 7 155H, 32GB, 1TB SSD, 16'' WQHD, RTX 4060 8GB
Razer specs: Intel i9-14900HX, 32GB, 1TB SSD, 18" WQXGA mini LED 300HZ, RTX 4070
I need the laptop for CAD work- AutoCad, SolidWorks, ArchiCAD, some rendering, as well as Illustrator and Photoshop. Some light gaming too while I am at it- GTA 5 or something.
Longevity is also very important. With the Razer I would get 2 year warranty, with the P1 1 year.
I very much like the look of the Razer as well as the big display, but the only drawback would be its weight- probably would not be much of a problem, but comparing to the light P1 there is a noticeable difference.
Any help appreciated!
Hello guys I am looking for a replacment keyboard for ThinkPad w530 but all brand new ones are almost 50 euros with shiping. Now i am wondering if anybody has an used one or know someone that i can get it fo cheaper. If it matters i am form Slovenia. And sorry for my english. Thanks all
i just buy a new E14( Gen 5 with intel ) . Wondering what interesting or cool things ( exclude gaming ) are people doing with thinkpad?
I've just got a t14s gen 1 Ryzen from eBay. I'm very happy with the condition. It's nearly new and it was relatively cheap, however it seems to have a bios supervisor password.
I've messaged the seller incase they might know v what it is but if not what is my best course of action? Is it a huge pain to bypass / fix?
so excited to have my first thinkpad。That's the second laptop i buy,but the first i bought on my own!i buy it mainly for programming。im going to share more phots and more experience on it,just wait !
uploading photos is unsuccessful,please wait
I am installing a new ssd as a system drive in my Lenovo P52. I want to do a clean win 10 install, since I don't trust any of the cloning tools out there.
I want to make sure I get all the correct drivers and specific Lenovo stuff on there. So, can I just make a Win 10 install media at MS and then install drivers afterwards?
Some also suggest downloading a Lenovo preload image from the Lenovo image recovery site, instead of the Win 10 install media, since all the drivers should be included. Is there a recommended way of doing this? What are your experiences?
I'm thinking of buying a year of XBOX game pass on PC, and I was wondering if my ThinkPad would handle it, as long as I have a stable internet connection. I have a T14s, Core i7-1165G7, 32gb ram. I'm not really sure if cloud gaming use any GPU performance, which is why I'm asking. Also, my screen is 60hz, which isn't ideal, but I don't play much fast pace games so I don't think it's going to be a problem... Type of games I'll play: CS2, Farming simulator, lil bro will probably be playing some driving games, and clicking games.
I bought my first Thinkpad for christmas! It's a L14 Gen 3 AMD, 16GB Ram and 256GB SSD for 330€. It's also gonna be my first laptop with Linux as main OS. I'm excited. I hope it was a good deal.
I have already done the Bios check and every test passed, only battery 'Lifespan Mode' test showed a warning. Is this an issue? Should I change the battery?
Also, long term I might want to change the SSD to one with 1TB. My research so far told me the specific SSD might be difficult/expensive to get? I believe I need a NVMe 2242 one sided - which options do I have there?
Hello,
I have bought a P14s G5 and I want to change the keyboard for a ANSI US layout backlit.
Where can I order that? I do not find any spare keyboard on Lenovo website.
I can find keyboards on Amazon, but not with these particular specs. Is it ok if I take a keyboard for P14s G3 or G4? Are there the same?
Thanks
Got an E14 Gen 6 that is my daily use laptop and an E560 that I got for a bargain on eBay. E560 is for use in my shed/office when I'm working and is basically my DVD player and allows me to watch all the 100s of DVDs I've got sat around.
E14 has a 1TB drive with Ubuntu and a 2TB drive with Windows 11 and I just switch between them using F12 boot menu with Ubuntu as default operating system.
Hi, I'm a second year computer science student and a web developer, but, as of right now, i still don't own a pc.
I know that thinkpad are pretty reliable and pretty easy to mod (change RAM, SSDs upgrade, etc), and ii have a pretty limited budget (300€, 400€ at best... i have to pay rent), so i was looking for older models of the T series, like the T480/T490 or the T14 G1.
I discorverd today the the processor makes a pretty big difference in performances for this computers.
Can anyone give me advice? I'll use the pc pretty much only to code, work in remote and study so there's not much that i need.
I got an X13 not long ago, I like the machine and its slightly smaller form factor, including the keyboard.
It seems tho that the keys travel is quite more/higher than what I am used to, so that's not something I like a lot. Would a T14 1st gen have a shorter travel keyboard than X13?
I guess I got used over the years with keyboards from HP, I have been working on Elitebooks for many years and more recently, with my current job, I use a Thinkpad P14s, which also has a slim/low-travel keys keyboard.
If someone has access to both a X13 gen1 and a T14 gen 1 to compare key height/travel, I would highly appreciate your input.
