IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts!
For IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts.
Blog posts are encouraged.
Tips:
When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated.
When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. (Comparison video)
The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. Never use nail polish remover (acetone).
When reinstalling Windows, try the Lenovo disc images, as longer battery times have been reported, probably due to custom drivers.

I need it for 5 years for my university and It doesn't have touch so it's display has changed?
Hi everyone, I have an old L540 that works perfectly except for this one problem that has slowly creeped up over the years: when powered off, some of the screen backlight LEDs stay on (shown in picture), slowly draining battery with lid closed. I suspect that the problem lies in the screen cable passing through the hinge, but I wanted to ask if someone had the same problem before disassembling everything.
Hi everyone, I’ve been searching for a good, affordable laptop for a while now, especially a thinkpad since they are such good value and found this deal on ebay. I think it’s time to go for one now but I just wanted the opinion from other thinkpad users. The specs are:
Lenovo Thinkpad T14 G3 14" Laptop Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U 16GB 256GB SSD with W11P and the price is 419$. It is an ebay refurbished device. I’d really appreciate just a quick opinion on this offer and recommendations if you think its a bad deal. Also I’m wondering if its possible to replace the display with a 2k panel and if the ram is soldered or not.
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop for my studies. I need a lot of power for music production etc. and a good battery life for studying (approx. 8 hours)
Here are my two options:
Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 7 Intel Ultra 7 155H 16GB DDR5 512GB M.2 SSD 1920x1200 WUXGA Battery: Li-Polymer 60Wh
Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U 32GB DDR5 1TB M.2 SSD 1920x1200 WUXGA Battery: Li-Polymer 54.7Wh
got a little curious that the t480 has a AMD version which is the A485. Just asking if its hot swapable and in terms of upgrade potential what can it do that isn't the same as the T480
Hey, would you consider £575 a reasonable price for an A grade X13 gen 3 with these specs in UK market? Thank you.
I'm not looking for a super computer (£££), but a reasonable upgrade from from my 480s that could at least run things reasonably well from Steam VR (to accompany my Quest 3).
Any recommendations that won't put me in the poor house for a decade?
Guys currently doing Web dev on ideapad 320 with A6-9220 processor with R4 graphics working just fine with windows 10 but i didn't change stock battery yet so it lasts almost 2 hours so i need a second laptop in which i can learn linux do some programming like learning new languages like python, C, bash scripting, C++, so i recently saw ThinkPads meme and fell for it, had couple of great deal on X220, X230 the X220 is in great condition with 8gb ram 256gb ssd and the X230 giving the same specs but not in even good condition, or i lean toward X250, so need your expertise here guys. Please 🙏🏻 help
I don't know if this is just me but right after I installed this update, my modern standby and sleep completely broke. I used to be able to close the lid on my system and sleep and wake just fine but right after installing this my computer can go to sleep for 3 hours and when I open the lid, it fails to wake up with a flashing sleep LED and the only way to get it to start up again is to hold down the power button. Is this just me?
Laptop is P16s G1 AMD. Already installed latest chipset drivers but that didn't seem to work.
Hi all Windows 11 24H2, ThinkPad E15 gen2 After installing the last intel video driver from vantage I got artefacts and can't use anymore my laptop Any suggestions please?! I want to hesitate a fresh windows install but like a last instance I will install it
Opened my T480 for the first time to take a look inside, raised the aluminium (?) cage where the SSD is encased a bit as I wanted to take a look at the SSD within it then put it back in it's seat. Now the laptop won't boot to the OS anymore, it's stuck in the BIOS Boot menu where I can't do anything other than going in the diagnostic tool.
The SSD is not recognized by the BIOS diagnostic tool by the way.
Any suggestion?
Hello.
I just wanna ask for confirmation - what are my options to reset the supervisor password in bios?
I bought this laptop as refurbished. I doesn't know that password is here. I may return it to the seller but I am considering it as my last option tbh.
Laptop is still under 3 year guarantee (3Y On-site, 9X5).
Second problem is that fingerprint reader is not recognized by the system (Windows 11). There is no such device in device manager. I believe it is connected with supervisor password or settings in bios?
Sure, it's no 7-row IBM keyboard, but. Wow. I used an EliteBook today and the keys felt like typing on the metal chassis of the laptop. The bumps on F and J were uncomfortably sharp, and the Ctrl key is in the wrong spot. The T480 feels so much better, especially because of the travel.
Hello. I need a used Thinkpad for my last year of college. I am studying mechanical engineering so I will mainly be doing a lot of CAD, maybe simulations, coding, Zoom meetings, etc. Looking for it to be relatively lightweight, fast, good battery life, not touchscreen.
My budget is under $300 or max $400. What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.
I may or may not have impulse bought the first T480 I saw ($30) and got a pretty low-end model:
- 1366*768 display
- i5-8250U
- Normal camera (not infrared)
- No fingerprint reader
- 8GiB RAM
- No battery (came with a sealed, brand-new Lenovo charger though)
- 128GB SSD
- No keyboard backlight
The bezel is a bit loose in the bottom right corner.
Should I even bother hunting down parts or should I just look for a better T480?
I heard that the gen 5 does not feature a replaceable wifi card, which is quite weird, but would that a big issue?
G5: 7735u, 8gb ddr5 (will upgrade later), 256gb ssd (will too), wuxga non touch new: https://www.lenovo.com/us/outletus/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadl/lenovo-thinkpad-l14-gen-5-14-inch-amd/ 21l5cto1ww-pw0e05bb#compatible_acc
G3: 5675u, 16gb ddr4, 512gb ssd, fhd touch refurbished: https://www.lenovo.com/us/outletus/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadl/thinkpad-l14-gen-3-(14-inch-amd)/ 21c6x01200
The wlan of the g5 is soldered on, and later on if it fails what should I do? Do I use a usb wifi adapter and leave it in there? (please provide solutions to this question too please)
I’m looking to buy a new carbon to replace my Gen 6 in the next month or so.
I’m really caught between ordering a Gen 12 with an OLED, i7 and 32GB ram or waiting a month or so for the Gen 13 aura.
The price difference is about $1200 AUD but that isn’t a real big issue for me. I am concerned about battery life with the OLED but I really do want to try one. I’ve never had a OLED in a laptop before.
Most of work is light coding and software dev, general office work, emails etc etc and some fancy spreadsheets.
I would say 80% of the time I’m plugged in anyway so I don’t think the battery life would be a huge deal.
However, I keep reading the Gen13 will be a lot better on battery life with the new CPU however I can not find any real world tests.
Any thoughts?
Thinking of buying a new machine and my options are either a refurbed P53 with an i7-9850h, 16gigs of ram and an rtx3000 6 gig or a new E14 specced with a ryzen 5 7535HS, 16gigs and 2gb of int graphics
The ryzen cpu benchmarks about 30% higher on average and is more efficient but the graphics on the p53 crush the integrated amd gpu
My main concerns are weight and battery life on the P53 and build quality on the e14.
Ideally i would want to have a machine that i can upgrade and use for atleast 5-6 more years
Pricing wise the p53 comes in it at approx 473 USD and the e14 comes out to 722 USD (converting from INR)
I'm into getting a thinkpad pc but the issue is what I'm suppose to choose for 150 $ and my usage is just browsing and writing stuff and old games
Hey all,
I was just wondering if the X1 Carbon Gen 12 is fully supported on Linux distributions (like Debian)? As in, are all the drivers for the 5G wireless card, fingerprint reader, etc, available?
Thanks in advance!
Hello! I'm new to thinkpads but I know a bit about hardware. I'm a mac user but I liked to code a a few years ago when I was in highschool and I want to give it a try again. I'm not that much of a gamer, just minecraft, I don't care much about the GPU.
I'm choosing between those two laptops from a known, trusted seller and the T14 g1 is just 30$ more expensive. The only problem are the batteries in both models, but I know how to buy and replace it. Both are i7 quad core in the 1.8Ghz-3Ghz zone, the P43s is 32gb ram and the other one is 16gb 2x8 (If i'm not mistaken, one is soldered)
What would you recommend? thanks!
Hi, so I wanted to tell the story of how I got this computer so someone left a district of where I go to school at and it was found on campus today and I got home. I uninstalled the previous windows and reinstall Windows so I could use it because I'm not in that district and that I updated a drivers and now the screen does not want to turn on. I've tried every tutorial on YouTube and I cannot figure it out. If anyone has any suggestions please help me. It is a Lenovo yoga 11e 5th gen.
