Tips, PSAs, & Resources

Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

Laptop gift for dad (Office + Personal Use)

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1000-$1500, USA
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ultrabook (No need for fancy screen features like bending 360 or whatever)
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Needs to be light enough for everyday carry
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15'
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only some Photoshop, mostly Office programs. Lots of browser tabs.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touch-screen, a higher refresh rate is a plus but 60 is fine, good keyboard, will last a while.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to buy a brand new laptop for my dad as his 8 year old Lenovo Ideapad is dying on him. He lives outside of the US so I reckon I will have to get him a different charger but I wanted to surprise him when he visits me. He does his work on his laptop, watches a lot of YouTube, and keeps a lot of browser tabs open. I think the most important parts would be having at least 32 GB RAM, lots of storage (at least 1TB or more), and being lightweight so he can carry it around a lot. Oh and maybe at least a 1080p camera for his meetings.

Which of these would you go with?

Looking for something under $700 USD refurbished to run basic stuff plus Photoshop and Illustrator on, and I’m liking how the Acer Swift Go 14 is looking. I found these two on Acer’s refurbished ebay store, but I’m not good enough with computers to really know how to compare.

Windows laptop for research and gaming

  • Total budget: Under PHP200k or £2,800 or €3.350 (will be going back to the UK soon and traveling around europe for sometime so i don't mind purchasing wherever the model is available)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? no.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Hoping for a laptop thatcan handle ~8 hours of usage without being charged if needed. No specific preference to build quality except i hope it can last a long time lol. No preference in form.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? If the laptop ends up being heavy and a bit thich, I guess it's something I can overlook if the quality is really great and would last me several years.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Python / R/ Matlab (entering neuroscience so these are the most likely softwares I'll be using), Miscrosoft Office, heavy browsing, and occasional gaming
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Sims 4, Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, The Last of Us
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is all I hope for.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. In case this is beneficial, I'm hoping for a durable laptop where I wouldn't need to replace it after 2 years already. I understand its longevity is relative to how I take care of it but surely having a reliable quality helps. I've been using a macbook pro for the longest time and while i appreciate its value, I can't play games on it and have heard from friends that coding/programming isn't the best here. I have no proper knowledge on these things so please go easy on me lol

Note: I know im supposed to add a flair, but i'm only being given the option to add tags.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Looking

Hey Y’all! I’m from Canada and am looking for a laptop (not a chromebook preferably). I have a budget of 700 and under preferably. We mainly use the laptop for gaming (rom hacks and such) and word processing. I would rather it be new but am opened to refurbished as long as it has a warranty or such. I’ve used a macbook in the past but it isn’t in the budget for me currently. Screen size and weight isn’t a big factor for me currently! Thanks all!

TIA everyone

Work Laptop - Considering Asus Zenbook Duo ?Alternatives / Multiple Monitors / USB-C Charging

I have accepted a fully remote job which I start in a few months, as part of this I am to buy my own laptop which which will be paid for by the company, there is not as such a fixed budget but realistically under 2k GBP/Euro. I don't want a Mac. I am considering an Asus Zenbook Duo (The New 2025 once it comes out) but am wondering if there are better options. At the moment with my current company I have a HP Zbook 17 Inch (i7) Laptop I extend and charge via a single USB-C cable to an external HP 24 Inch Monitor (with inbuilt USB C hub) and to that link another monitor, for a total of 3 screens. I have no issues with the setup.

I may later in the year try VanLife in which case power consumption and charging would become an issue, so something that can be charged from 12v/USB C would be preferable. Any thoughts on the earlier model Zenbook Duo form factor or better options with external monitors? Screen space is quite key for me. But I won't need to run demanding software or games.

  • Total budget 1000-2000 GBP/Euro, United Kingdom
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? New only
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not so important
  • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**14-17 Inch (Would like to extend to multiple monitors
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? USB-C Charging, Ability to Extend to multiple external monitors (at least 2 for a total of 3+ screens)
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Lower power consumption better, considering off-grid type situation.

Thank you.

Basic school laptop

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$500

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Almost exclusively

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality #1, battery life #2, performance #3, don't really care for form factor/2 in 1.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

No preference

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Word, PowerPoint, google

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No make or breaks

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm in the middle of med school looking for a bare bones laptop that will see pretty infrequent use. I usually study at a desktop, so it would really only be for reviewing notes, etc during mandatory lectures. Right now I have a Thinkpad t480 that I like a lot, but don't like how often I am fixing it. It would be nice to look at radiology/histology stuff through a better screen, but that's not a deal breaker.

I've only used work laptop for 10 years. I.T. is being jerks now and I need my own. I need a laptop for gaming, Fusion 360, photoshop mainly.

Old I.T. was very chill, didn't care if we gamed on the weekends as long as we got out work done. New I.T.... Not so much. I've not kept up with computer specs AT ALL for the last 10 years and appreciate any help given! Less about the absolute best FPS, and more about having something solid that I can use for years and years.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2,000 USD, USA
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Refurbs yes, used no.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, Travelability, Battery Life, Build Quality, in that order. But these are flexible.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? I do travel for work occasionally. Would like to fit it in my laptop back with my work comp. But it's not the primary thing.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, large enough to use Fusion 360, Photoshop, etc.
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Fusion 360, Adobe Suite, Whatever steam game looks cool that week.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No specific requirements here.
  • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**Reliable is important, I don't want it to be a paper weight in a month. Don't care about optical drives, touch screen is neat, but not really needed.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly fusion 360, Photoshop, Gaming. Basically want something that is going to be solid and usable for a long time. It would be nice to have decent enough battery and size to be able to fly with it easily.

Need new laptop for daily use and gaming, under 3000-4000 Euros, Luxembourg

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

Max 3999 Euros, ideally 1000-2999 Euros. Luxembourg (France is okay for the websites that allow a different country for shipping, such as Amazon.).

Are you open to refurbs/used?

No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I need enough battery life to get through 12 hours of on and off use, so 6+ hours of battery life would be ideal. I also want my laptop to be able to run video games, so 16+ GB of memory. I also want 500GB or even better, 1TB of storage. That's all.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It needs to be able to fit in an average bag or backpack without breaking my back. I will not buy very bulky laptops, but also do not want tiny laptops.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Anything, as long as its enough to fit in a backpack.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Valorant, Genshin Impact, HSR, Gacha games in general.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

60 FPS. I don't want potato graphics, and that's about it.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Preferrably not touch-screen. I need it to run Windows. I want a reliable touchpad, not an overly thin or small keyboard (I currently have a 2017 Macbook Air, and its keyboard is perfect). I need it to have a QWERTY keyboard, and a headphone jack.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It would be for daily use, so I want it to be easily transportable, and also no extremely loud fans. I am thinking of maybe buying a gaming computer, but do not want ones with patterns/designs on the laptop, or unremovable rainbow lights and decorations on the keyboard.

Looking for a new laptop

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700-1200 USD, would prefer to keep it under/around 1000
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? yes but would prefer new
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality is important to me, I am getting a new laptop because my Lenovo ideapad 5 I've had for like 4 years keeps having issues and I'm tired of paying for repairs. Battery life and performance should be decent, but I don't need anything too fancy
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not particularly important as long as it isn't super heavy/clunky
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some light gaming, I am mostly playing games like Skyrim, Session skate simulator and MTG Arena which do not have high requirements but Session doesn't run very well so would prefer something a bit better. I would like to have the option to run games with a bit higher requirements but don't need anything too fancy
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't know much about gaming settings but it would be nice to be able to run some games a bit more smoothly than the laptop I currently have (lenovo ideapad 5 with Ryzen 7 AMD and stock AMD radeon graphics card), so something with a bit better graphics card or whatever would be nice
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is important to me

Any recommendations? Kinda just looking for something with more reliable build quality than my current laptop and the option to do a bit more gaming stuff

  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance first
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Irrelevant
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 16"+ if possible, but will take 15.6"
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, mostly will be used for bookkeeping and web browsing

Super bare bones laptop exclusively for tabletop D&D gaming (not online)

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: EUR 200 to 300 (willing to go to 400 but would really prefer not to). I'm based in Malta so Europe would be my purchasing area. Shipping costs are sadly a painful reality for me.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality is important, given that I'll be taking it around to different locations. Performance is only needed to run rudamentary apps (see question #6 below).
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not in the slightest.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft Excel, any browser, Discord.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No video gaming.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As bare bones as possible (due to budgetary constraints). However, semi-tablet functionality is appreciated (but not mandatory).
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I basically intend to use this laptop as a versatile digital stand-in for a paper character sheet (during sessions of Dungeons & Dragons) through the use of Microsoft Excel, while also being able to pull up an internet browser and Discord at will during said sessions. I'm not completely against the idea of using a tablet instead but I prefer the tactile feel of a laptop (call me old fashioned). To be clear, this laptop will not be used for any online D&D sessions - only in-person. Also this is the first time I'm ever posting on Reddit so apologies if I missed anything. Thanks in advance.

US Professor new Dell laptop around $2000 budget

I work at a University and they have a special deal/rate with Dell laptops, especially because of the support.

The last laptop I got was a Dell Latitude 9510, a little over 4 years ago. I liked it overall, but there were some issues toward the end of its life. The external speaker did not work at the end, and I had to keep getting new chargers for it. It was a 2-in1 because I thought I would be using the tablet mode much more than I actually did. I realize now that I should not necessarily go for the 2-in-1, but maybe get a good laptop and then separately get a good tablet, as opposed to trying to get both in one.

The budget is around $2000. I'm not paying for it, so I'm not looking to cut costs. I'd rather "pay" more now and the laptop last me longer. I can over the budget some, but it's probably best to stay within the parameters.

I'm not really a gamer or use the CPU for anything serious. The majority of the laptop use will be internet browsing, word processing, and watching videos.

I would rather "pay" more and have a lighter laptop rather than a heavier and bulkier one.

The Latitude 9510 had a 15" display. I liked that. I would rather stay around the same size. I could be convinced to go up in screen size as long as I didn't have to sacrifice the laptop being uncomfortably heavy.

I look forward to recommendations! Thank you.

Cant choose between ASUS Flow X13 and ASUS ProArt X13

So as the title states, I wanted to buy a new laptop. I cannot choose between X13 of Flow and ProArt. I want a laptop which is 360 (I am used to stylus and digital art) and something with a good processor and gpu so that I can work on 3d modelling and stuff. Since I am a student and might need it for professional use in the future too.. I am going with the 13 variant and not 16. Please provide some insight and lemme know which one would be suitable. Rn in my mind flow x13 holds a good place cuz I getting almost the same features with a better refresh rate. Although I dont intent do heavy gaming, I get the sense why ProArt would be better than Flow. Please help me in this regard.

Also price is quiet a concern. Here the ProArt costs around $2K. I dont have any idea how I can check the price for Flow, its not listed anywhere. If anyone from India please let me know how I can purchase a Flow X13(atleast check the accurate price) for the 2023 model.

Danke Schon.

ThinkPad X1 or P1, Asus ProArt or Asus Zephyrus for data analysis / programming

I'm hesitating between these four models. All have very similar specs :

  • either Intel Ultra 9 or Ryzen AI 9
  • at least 32GB RAM (some have optional 64GB)
  • RTX 4070 (some have 4060)

Price points are similar, too, at around 2600-3000$ CAD.

Any opinions on either laptops being preferable over others?
