Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

ThinkPad-like laptop for travel (800 euros)

Hello people! I'm an organic chemist working as a researcher. I'm currently using my omen15 (2020) laptop for work but it's overkill, heavy (especially with the power supply, so it's very inconvenient to travel with it) and the battery doesn't last nearly as long as I need it to, so I'm looking for a different laptop.

I'm looking for to run the following software all at once:

  • Windows 11 (I know, I know...)
  • Firefox with 20-30 open tabs
  • Microsoft Word + PowerPoint + Excel
  • SigmaPlot
  • Inkscape
  • Mestrenova or Topspin

I will also occasionally use Blender, but I plan on rendering the (relatively simple) scene on my other machine so I don't think I'll need a dedicated GPU.

Features I need:

  • 4 h+ battery life when on the go (won't use Firefox/Internet connection but the rest of the software will run)
  • Lightweight and relatively small (a 14 incher would be ideal)
  • Humanely sized charger (ideally, USB PD)
  • Reliable and sturdy (I will frequently walk with it under my arm, open/close the thing many times a day, it will live in my backpack which may have debree in it and I don’t want to be worried it’ll stop working because of that)
  • Good keyboard and touchpad
  • 2+ USB type A ports
  • External display support
  • 16 GB+ RAM; 512 GB+ SSD

Features that would be really nice to have:

  • RAM slot(s)
  • Two SSD slots
  • Legible display even when outside
  • Repairable
  • Spanish or International keyboard (I need the accents. Yes, both accents and yes, even on capital letters. I'm talking to you, whoever designed the Italian keyboard).

I was rocking an old ThinkPad X240 and I loved it, but it was just a bit too slow even when I was not using inkscape and blender. Ideally, I'm looking for something similar, but up-to-date. It doesn't have to be a ThinkPad, but I'm looking for a reliable, repairable, no-nonsense machine.

I live in Europe and I'm looking to buy from around here through eBay or Amazon.

Thank you for your help!

I want a laptop and well, it's kinda specific!

My priorities are good ports, I want atleast one USB4 and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, HDMI is a must and RJ45 would be great to have!

I don't care about the laptop's size and 512GB SSD will be a good starting point, no requirements about the upgradability of the laptop too.

My budget is under $750...

With my research, I was able to find Acer Aspire 5 (A514-56M-576D)

Please give any suggestions you have!

(1000-1500 usd): Lightweight Laptop for mobile tasks, some gaming

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ~1000-1500 usd (flexible for more)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? no
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Open to any form factor suggestions, top notch build quality, performance, and battery life.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? High for both
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No. Not too small though
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming isn't a huge priority on this, it would be more for browsing and lightweight stuff, heaviest games OOTP baseball, RimWorld, Madden, 2k, Cities Skylines, l and lots of stuff open at once, so RAM and storage a priority.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? RAM intensive games like OOTP baseball, RimWorld, Madden, 2k, Cities Skylines
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen is a nice to have, like a good keyboard, definitely need reliable build quality and sleek, finger print nice to have
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.-My main is my gaming desktop for everything, but it was built in 2020 and I want something that can be used when traveling. Haven't purchased a new laptop since 2016, a large mobile workstation Lenovo Thinkpad P50, I'd like it to be much more lightweight and low profile. Definitely willing to pay more for a nice graphics card/ssd/more RAM if it doesnt add too much bulk

Have owned an HP where the screws/glue broke apart and the inside was exposed, and a Thinkpad. I want the reliablity

Need to replace my old laptop

Old laptop shit the bed and I'm looking at replacements. It's mostly for light general use. Email. YouTube and Crunchyroll. Paying bills.

It doesn't need to run Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings or anything but I'd like to be able to play a bit of State of Decay 2, Warframe or Elite Dangerous.

Here are some options in the price range I'm willing to pay...

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 - £300

Dell Inspiron 15 3535 - £400

Acer Aspire 3 - £380

There are also a bunch of these brands I've never heard of that give off Chinese same warehouse/different door vibes...

DREAMFYRE 16“- 2.5K Screen Laptop - £245

15.6 Inch Laptop - £380

I'm not sure I trust them but if I can get...

ACEMAGIC Newest Gaming Laptop Computer

... on Black Friday for like £300 I'd be pretty tempted. I'm mean, it does have dollar store Optimus Prime coming out of the screen.

Or if you have other suggestions in the UK let me know. Thanks.

Laptop for Photoshop / Gaming

Hi, I need help with buying a laptop. My budget is currently £400-500 but am willing to save for a few more months to get a better model priced around £900-£1200 if needed.

I am an Art student at University and am hoping to purchase a laptop which will get me through the next 4 years and hopefully into my career! The laptop will need to be able to easily run adobe software such as Photoshop.

I also need it to be able to handle multiple tabs of google open at once and be fast, my current laptop is a ‘Lenovo Ideapad 510-15ISK’ and can struggle with this and takes ages to start up, which is very frustrating.

In my spare time I enjoy playing the Sims 4 which had recommended specs of at least

OS: 64 Bit Windows 10 PROCESSOR: Intel core i5 (4 cores), AMD Ryzen 5 or better VIDEO CARD: 1 GB of Video RAM, NVIDIA GTX 650, AMD Radeon HD 7750, or better MEMORY: 8 GB RAM HARD DRIVE: 50 GB of free space, with at least 1 GB additional space f

Buying new computer, not for gaming

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I don't really have a hard set budget, but somewhere between 1000-1500 USD, preferably in the lower range, but I may spend more if its worth it.

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A good compromise between battery life and performance is most important.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very important compared to other factors like performance and battery life.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14-16". I'm currently using a 15" macbook pro and I'm pretty satisfied with the size, but

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to be able to run 3-4 virtual machines. No gaming ATM.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Backlit keyboard is a must. I'm Norwegian, so if I could get the computer with a Norwegian keyboard that would be nice. USB4 would also be nice, along with at least 3 USB connections.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need to upgrade my 11 year old macbook, and I am trying to learn more about computers and hopefully get into network, cloud or cybersecurity or something else within IT. Still very newbie, so I dont know yet what I might find interesting though.

Need Laptop for translator student Spain 400-600€

Hi there! I recently started my masters on translation and interpretation in public services and my laptop conveniently died. It was an Asus Vivobook 14 and I really liked it but I had some issues with the screen a year ago and from there it was never the same.

We’re starting to use some CAT tools in class but things are not that serious yet and I’m still learning, not a professional, however, since I have no idea about laptops, I thought it would be a good idea to ask here first.

Do you guys have any recommendations? My main issue with my previous laptop was how fast the battery died but apart from that, I don’t have many requirements. I would like to spend between 400-600€ ideally since I’m still a student and I don’t really need the best laptop out there. I do have to say I’m quite used to ASUS so any ASUS recommendation is welcome too!

I’m all ears! Thank you!

Form

• Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 400-600€ • Are you open to refurbs/used? No • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Not that experience about laptops so I’d say battery life and performance • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light and thin enough to be able to use it on a cafe or at uni comfortably • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Indifferent • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAT Tools

• Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Already mentioned above

Laptop for Music/Workspace Apps and maybe Minecraft

Looking at a Nitro V 15 with Ryzen 5 7535HS - GeForce RTX 4050-16GB DDR5 -512GB SSD. $700USD

Or Asus Vivobook 17X FHD with AMD Ryzen 7 7730U with 16GB-1TB SSD (integrated graphics) $600USD

Anyone have experience with music on either machine? FL Studio (recording and tracking, as well as lots of hefty plugins) Storage is not an issue (I think) as I can get some external SSDs. I really don’t play games other than Minecraft occasionally, so I’m not too scared of the integrated graphics, but I assume if that’s the route I went then I wouldn’t have much luck with other games on that laptop, heaven forbid I find something that looks worth it and fun to me. Any other recommendations and help is appreciated, thanks much! I am a sucker for high quality picture, so maybe something with OLED in the $500-$800ish range if any body has anything they can think of as well.

Gaming laptop under $800

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US

800$ USD, preferably lower. I can go over if necessary

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, as long as they do not not need major repairs

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

It isn’t that important, but I would like a good battery life when doing things other than gaming (at least 3 hours)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness isn’t too important, but I liked the size of the Nitro 5, and I don’t want something too much heavier. I will be carrying it around from class to class.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

A 17 inch screen is the largest I would like, though larger isn’t the worst.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do Blender, Da Vinci Resolve, and GIS mapping as a hobby, and I play CK3, Arma 3, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. I will also be using this to do schoolwork.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would like to play Microsoft Flight Simulator and Arma Reforger on at least medium settings with 60 fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don’t care about much besides a decent keyboard and quiet (but I don’t know much about them) and a few USB slots. I would also like to have a quiet mode for fans, though it is not important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I used to use an Acer Nitro 5 with an I5 and a GTX 1650 before this, and it could run almost all the games I would play on medium settings except for the newer ones.

Help! Should I go for 8GB or 16GB RAM in Acer Aspire Ryzen 5 for Daily Use (Budget: 30K)?

Hey folks,

I’m looking to buy a laptop for daily use, video calls, entertainment, and multitasking, and I’ve narrowed down my options. My budget is around 30K, and I’m planning to use the laptop for at least 3-4 years, so I want something that’s future-proof without overspending.

Here are my two options:

  1. **Acer Aspire Lite AMD Ryzen 5 Hexa Core 5625U (8GB RAM, 512GB SSD)**

    • Price: ~30K

    • Windows 11 Home

    • 8GB RAM (expandable)

    • SSD Storage

  2. **Acer Aspire 3 AMD Ryzen 5 Hexa Core 7430U (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)**

    • Price: ~32K

    • Windows 11 Home

    • 16GB RAM

    • Backlit Keyboard

I am unsure whether 8GB RAM will be enough for my needs (video calls, light editing, and multitasking) or if I should stretch my budget by going for the 16GB version. I plan to keep the laptop for the long term, so I want to be as future-proof as possible.

Is 8GB sufficient for smooth performance, or would I really benefit from 16GB? Also, is the performance difference between the Ryzen 5 5625U and 7430U significant for my use case?

Any insights would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Business Major + some gaming

Hello! I don’t have any idea what would be the best laptop for me and I need some advice.

I’m a college student about to graduate. I’m a business major so I do typically prefer to work with laptops that aren’t apple since a lot of the programming I need easily downloads to windows.

I sometimes like to play video games on my laptop- not often but enough to where I take it into consideration.

I like touchscreen laptops but I have an HP one so far and it has been a burden to deal with. So I’d be okay with losing that feature if it means I get a better product. I like the touchscreen option because I make tons of presentations and it’s easier for me to just use my finger. But as I said, I would be okay with losing that feature.

I like thin, lightweight laptops and I want a lot of storage since I am typically writing several papers, downloading large spreadsheets, & creating presentations.

forgot to mention- my budget is a little tight but I am willing to splurge since I do plan on using this laptop long term.

  • 1,200 USD - USA

Are you open to refurbs/used?

  • Battery Life is most important, followed by build quality & performance for durability & reliability when traveling & working in different locations.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

  • Fairly important for travel & portability

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

  • 15-16" ideal, 14" is acceptable

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

  • Prefer to be able to use at least middle-quality graphic settings for casual play, but do not need absolute best.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

  • Good camera & screen quality for video calls & working in various indoor/outdoor environments with different lighting (needs to be much better than my current Acer Swift 3)

£300-

Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Anything that runs well and can retain at least 4-5 hours battery life with browser use

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important, I'll take anything

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Thinking 14", but not choosey, I'll take anything if its cheap enough and performs well within the budget

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll mostly just be using this laptop for everyday browsing (Chrome, netflix), microsoft suites, but do want something that will support use of a FPV Drone Simulator through Steam at its most basic settings

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Seeking 14inch Laptop Under $600

As the title suggests I need something I can use that is under $600 and if it’s slightly over that also fine just need to see it.

Im not a fan of intel but to be honest will take it. But I want the best bang for my buck.

Reason for laptop

Only work not for gaming and not even for streaming strictly for work.

Browsing, playing youtube videos, saving and storing files, and even email.

study & gaming laptop that’ll last me a while

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

A little over £500 & UK

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factors aren’t too important to me but an Ultrabook interests me, not a need though. Not too bothered about build quality, as long as it doesn’t break on me and is decent quality - performance is my priority & battery life should be sustainable but not insane

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don’t care too much about weight but I’d prefer a thinner laptop for aesthetic reasons

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14- 15 and over inches

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Roblox & SIMS mainly

Valorant, Fortnite & Fortnite occasionally but not actively

‘Unpacking’ more than I’d like to admit

IDK much about FPS and settings but I guess I’d wanna play fps games at a decent rate that I don’t lag?? No idea..

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Nope

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Unrelated but could I play LIS 3 on a laptop..? Not a priority but I kinda wanna 😣

Seeking Budget Laptop for Kids

The general use case: I have a 10 yr old and an 8 yr old. They both really like games, and have shown an interest in developing mods for Minecraft, and generally pick things up quickly. They have also shown interest in building and creating art. I’d like them to be able to do entry level/just getting started types of tasks like mod-making for Minecraft, maybe light video and picture editing. The goal is to get them tools that are inexpensive without making the actual activities unpleasant due to under-performing equipment. While these devices may occasionally be used for online activities, for the most part we don't allow them to just freely use the internet.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

As this is for young kids, I’d like to keep the price as low as possible while still accomplishing the tasks. Under $200 would be great, but I'm open to all suggestions.

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Absolutely. Buying off ebay, for example, would be fine with me.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performanc/battery life second, and form factor 3rd

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very little

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, light

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, Stardew, Among Us. Nothing AAA/high requirements

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

N/A

Laptop for wildlife biologist

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1,500

Are you open to refurbs/used?

yes to refurbs

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I like long battery life. I don't like 2 in 1 laptops. Beyond that I don't care.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important. I don't want a super thick laptop.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14" or wider for width. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will not be doing any of these applications.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a plus. I don't care about the other characteristics.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need a laptop that can simultaneously run one or more of these apps at a time: ARCGIS Pro, excel, word, RStudio, Google chrome.

Lenovo vs ASUS for PhD

Hi Everyone!

My old DELL G3 15 is dying, so I am planning to replace it with either a Lenovo or ASUS laptop. I am currently doing my PhD in Security Studies and the main functions of the laptop would be thesis writing/qualitative and quantitative research and occasional gaming. I’m torn between four options, all of which have 32GB of memory, 1TB SSD, and weigh under 1.5 kg. My main priorities are good performance, portability, and long battery life (7h+) with a budget under €2k.

  1. Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 Copilot+ PC (Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 32Gb SSD 1Tb 14" LED Tactile Full HD Qualcomm Adreno)

  2. Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 9 14Q8X9 (Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 32GB SSD 1Tb 14.5" OLED Tactile 3K Qualcomm Adreno)

  3. ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED Copilot+ PC (Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 32Gb SSD 1Tb 15.6" OLED 3K 120 Hz Qualcomm Adreno)

  4. ASUS Zenbook S 16 OLED (UM5606) (AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 2.0 GHz 36 Gb SSD 1Tb 16" 3K (2880x1800), 16:10, 120 Hz AMD Radeon™ 890M Graphics)

Which one would be the best fit? I am also open for other options until they meet my main criteria.

Big thanks!

Seeking a well rounded, gaming friendly laptop

Total budget - 1000--1200, but preferably less, US

Are you open to refurbs/used? - Not really

How important is weight and thinness to you? - Thinness doesn't matter, but I would prefer something on the lighter/smaller side

Do you have a preferred screen size? - 14 to 15.6 ish, I had a 17 once and it was too much

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? - gaming, web browsing, writing, research

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - I'm not looking for top of the line. I want to play the stuff that isn't easy to play on the handheld PCs. Point and click stuff, simulation stuff. Top graphics don't matter but it all needs to run smooth. 60 fps is fine.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - not required per say but I like rainbow vomit, the gayer the better. Keyboard also matters a lot. Touch screen would be nice as it's a habit at this point but not required, I'll be using a razer naga with number buttons on the side. Optical drive not needed.

Battery life - 8 hours unplugged for general use, a day out. Games I'll be tethered to power cord.

Bottom line I'm looking for is a smaller device that I can play moderate games on, write easy, and carry around. I knew what was good of wise a few years back when I built mine but I'm a lot less familiar with laptop parts and what makes a good deal there. Thanks for reading
