Tips, PSAs, & Resources

Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

(USA) (up to $400)

Up to $400 preferably, $500 at the absolute maximum if I have no other choices

Not really typically open to used/refurbished but I'd have to see

Weight and thinness is not too big of a deal as long as it's not obscenely heavy or thick lol

A pretty large screen size would be ideal

Yes I plan to do video editing. Probably Adobe Premiere or Davinci Resolve or things like that; I'm not sure yet exactly which software I'm gonna use.

Hoping to occasionally play some less performance-heavy definitely non-Triple-A games. Like Brawlhalla and Hollow Knight and stuff like that.

Not really many specific requirements. My uncle told me to get anything with an rtx 4060 or better though.

So essentially I need a good laptop mainly for video editing and running OBS. But also for other basic uses here and there such as mild gaming and probably writing documents and browsing the internet and whatnot. I'm not in the loop with laptop prices so I'm not sure if under $400 is too much to ask. But that's my preference. $500 would be my absolute maximum if there were absolutely no choices. Battery life and good screens and other basics like that are important but not high priority. Also, looking for Windows 11; forgot to mention earlier. Thanks to anyone who can help me!

My price range is around $600-900. Id buy a seperste monitor for home maybe. again it doesnt have to be a crazy gaming laptop mostly for other stuff but i want enough space and good speed. Also good look w graphics and preferable good sounding keyboard w maybe lights(rgb i think?)

(Greece) Laptop for travel / movies / D&D

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Greece, preferably under 500€ but up to 700€

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Just looking for new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and build quality above the rest.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I want to be able to carry it around in a backpack, so ideally something thin and light, but not flimsy.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I want to be able to enjoy watching movies and doing Dungeons & Dragons DM prep on it, so not too small.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nope. Nothing demanding.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Won't be using it for gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Windows only. No mac or chromebooks. Wifi, bluetooth, usb + usb-c ports, and a keyboard/touchpad that I can use without relying on externals. Ideally would like to be able to charge it via USB either on planes or using a power bank. Headphone jack would be nice but not mandatory. Decent speakers would be nice for playing music during Dungeons and Dragons sessions, but low priority.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

budget/refurbished laptop for graphic design and drawing for 600€

Im currently looking for a budget laptop that can run Adobe creative cloud & digital drawing software smoothly and can handle multitasking. I've been thinking about getting a 2in1 so I could draw on it directly, but from everything I heard the drawing experiences on these isn't the best, so I kinda moved away from that idea. They seem to be more expensive and more prone to breaking, so I'd rather spend the little budget I have on performance than the convertible option, and keep using an additional graphic tablet.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

• Up to 600€

Are you open to refurbs/used?

• yeah definetly, espescially since I know my expectations/needs don't necessarily fit within my budget

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

  1. Performance: My current laptop is really slow and crashes easily, so performance is currently my number one priority. I wanna be able to run softwares like photoshop, illustrator or fresco smoothly. I also tend to do several things at once, so a laptop being able to handle multitasking would be great. I need 16GB RAM and while a graphic card would be nice, I'm also aware of my low budget.

  2. Build Quality: I'm a little clumsy and I also don't have that much money, so something that lasts would be great

  3. Form factor: isn't that important cause I'm not set on needing a convertible anymore. It's not like I'm completely opposed to convertibles but I'm heistant about their use for drawing.

  4. Battery life: I mostly use it plucked in, and if I use it unplucked it's only for short periods of time

How important is weight and thinness to you?

• while I prefer lighter and thinner laptops it's not a priority. I'd rather it be a little heavier but perform better.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

• I like fourteen to fifteen inch screens, thirteen inches would be okay, but sixteen would be too big.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

• Photo editing (only light editing though), but I mostly use it for graphic design and drawing. I only do design and drawing as a hobby, so I don't need professional quality. The programs I use the most are Adobe Fresco and Illustrator, which my current laptop can no longer run.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

• No.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

• I use my laptop to write a lot too, so a decent keyboard that's easy to type on would be nice.

• A high resolution and color accurate display would be nice.

• I need both an up to date USB port and a HDMI port so I can pluck in a graphic tablet.

Laptop for studying and CAD

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1500€ in Germany

  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? battery life > performance, build quality should be good, because I´m travelling a lot
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? weight < 1,5 kg
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.-fill here, remove dashes-
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do some CAD work.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?-No
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? IPS Panel would be great. No OLED fan.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have an old HP Pavillon 14 inch laptop with an intel i5-8250U CPU, 8 GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 940MX from 2017. I use the laptop for Studiengang and some CAD work. I am looking for a latop that has a long battery life, an IPS Panel and that I can continue to do my CAD work with. As I work with an external monitor at home and only use the laptop for office programmes and Netflix when I'm travelling and at university, a 14-inch screen is enough for me. I have my eye on the new Thinkpad T14s Gen 6 AMD.

Laptop for travel school and Civ 7.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: CAD 1200-1500

  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Only new.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I don't want a 2-in-1. What matters most is battery life and a small lightweight laptop with good build quality. The only game I play currently is Civ 6, but I would like to be able to play Civ 7 when it comes out in Feb next year.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I don't want a big gaming laptop.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 Inches

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, it is just for general use; the only specific thing will be Civ 7.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civ 7 with recommended specs.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'll need to type a lot so a good keyboard is required.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would hope to use this laptop for at least 4-5 years.

As a further note, is it worthwhile to wait for Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Acer Aspire 5 vs E14 gen 6

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on choosing between two laptops: the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 and the Acer Aspire 5. Here’s a quick comparison based on their specifications:

Acer Aspire 5 A514-56M-58JE:

•	Processor: Intel Core i7 (13th Gen)
•	Storage: 1TB SSD
•	RAM: 32GB
•	Price: Approximately $200 less than the E14

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 6:

•	Processor: Intel Core i5 Ultra
•	Storage: 512GB SSD
•	RAM: 16GB
•	Design: I really like the look of the E14; it has a sleek and professional design.

While I’m drawn to the aesthetics of the E14, I can’t overlook the value of the Acer Aspire 5. With a more powerful processor, double the RAM, and significantly more storage, the Acer seems to offer better performance for the price.

What do you all think? Is the design of the E14 worth the extra cost, or should I prioritize the specs of the Acer Aspire 5?

Best Laptop Recommendation for ML & Data Science (Planning to Take to the USA!)

Hey everyone! 😊 I'm looking for a laptop that would be great for machine learning and data science tasks. My main requirements are strong performance for ML projects (like training models, data processing, etc.), good portability, and durability since I plan to take it with me to the USA.
Preferences: Ideally something with solid GPU and RAM options, good battery life, and a reliable build.

If you've had experience with a setup that works well for these needs, I'd love to hear your recommendations! Thank you!"

(UK) Windows workstation that can run Fusion, prefers the feel of a metal chassis.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

• Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around £600 would be my limit.

• Are you open to refurbs/used?

I would prefer to just go buy it new online or from a shop like Curry's, refurb suggestions would be taken on board though.

• How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

  1. Performance: It has to be quick, when use my current, really old, laptop and it gets hung up on the simplest of things, I instantly want to put it away and not do any work at all.

  2. Build Quality: Good feel, nice keyboard, nice screen, something that I'll enjoy using.

  3. Battery: This isn't too important, as I won't be taking it on plane or train journeys or anything, mainly in places where it can be plugged in if need be.

  4. Form Factor: Just a standard functioning laptop.

• How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not massively important, however a lighter laptop would be nice.

• Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Anything 15 inches or above.

• Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I like to 3D print, using Autodesk Fusion for modelling things up, and Bambu Studio for slicing. Not really a big gamer.

• If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

• Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/ touchpad)?

A good tactile keyboard would be nice, a finger print reader isn't necessary, but would be a bonus.

• Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The laptop would just be a light workstation to help me with my college/uni work (using Microsoft office), for casual browsing, but with the capability to run CAD software such as Fusion with reasonable performance. Looking at the requirements for Fusion, maybe something with an i5 or better (or AMD equivalent of course).

I like the idea of a laptop with a metal chassis, as I have used my girlfriend's MacBook and really like the feel, just don't like MacOS.

Quick start up is also preferred, I'd like to be able to get onto my college work ASAP before the urge to do it goes away 😂.

Confused which laptop to buy

I've been researching back and forth as to which laptop would fit best for me. I prefer a light and portable laptop since there would be meeting I'd attend to. I also use it mainly for multitasking office work AND moderate editing. I also dont necessarily need a dedicated gpu since i have a separate pc at home for heavy editing. Just need one that allows me to do basic edits while i work outside. Here are my options so far

Please help me find a laptop for university. United States, Under 600USD

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 500-600 USD
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? While I would prefer a new laptop, I would also accept a refurbished one if it is justified.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm open to the idea of a 2-in-1 but it's not a priority. I'll need to take this laptop with me to university so I would assume that it would need to have good build quality(just not cheap/fragile). the performance doesn't matter much as most of the time I'll be using Word or Chrome. The battery will obviously have to last me at least most of the entire day which is about 10 hours, I would prefer not having to use a charger at school.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd prefer it to be smaller and lighter as I'll have to carry it around campus.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 Inches
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, I only use the internet and Word.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'll need to type a lot so a good keyboard is required.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would hope to use this laptop for at least 4-5 years.

A workstation laptop with (preferably) 16 core CPU, 32 GB RAM, no high end graphics card and USB/RJ45 ports?

Hi guys. I'm looking for a laptop for compiling and debugging the Android kernel. Google recommends a 72 core machine for compilation (lol!). But most people doing this work says a 16 core CPU assisted with >32 GB RAM is sufficient. I won't be doing any graphics intensive work on the laptop so an integrated graphics card will do just fine. I found Dell XPS 13 which almost perfectly matches this requirement but it only comes with 2 type C ports. I'm looking for some USB and RJ45 ports on the laptop because I'd be doing development work. Would really appreciate to get some suggestions according to these requirements. Thank you so much!

HP vs Lenovo

Hi, which one is better? Similiar price used I think Lenovo is a little cheaper. Does GPU or CPU matter most in this case? I want it to have it long term and I would like it to be powerful enough to handle heavy multitasking, as in having a lot of tabs open at once, using it for Photoshop etc. Thanks in advance!

1)Lenovo C940 G7 Intel i7-1065 G7(generation 10) 512 GB M.2 SSD Disc 16GB ddr4 3733 ram Intel Iris Plus Graphics g7 60 battery size Vs

2)HP EliteBook 840 G8 OS: Windows 11 Pro CPU: Intel Core i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics RAM: 16GB ddr4 2666V ram Disk: Samsung SSD 256G 53 battery size

Please help me find a laptop.

Please go through it

im looking to buy a new laptop: soo im an ece engineering student(btech), and am looking to buy a laptop to be able to run all my ece related software at home instead of relying on the college systems. the software we majorly use are

Altera Quartus: A programmable logic device design software for hardware description, visual circuit editing, and vector waveform simulation.

ANSYS: A simulation software used for engineering simulation in various fields, including rocket launches, wearable technology, and more.

SimulationX: A system simulation software for modeling, simulating, and analyzing complex dynamic systems.

Mentor Graphics ModelSim: A digital circuit simulator used for verifying and testing digital designs.

Altium Designer: An integrated electronic product development system software for designing and developing electronic products.

PADS: A printed circuit board (PCB) design software used for designing and verifying PCB layouts.

Xilinx ISE: A software development environment for designing and implementing FPGA-based systems.

matlab

cadence

vivado

multisim

ltspice

im okay with a screen size>15 inch, i might adjust with a 14 inch laptops if its extremely good.i dont mind if the laptop is heavy, but i might ocassionally have to take it to college, but maybe having a decent battery can help me move more freely.i will need a windows laptop, i will need 1tb storage and 16gb ram as of now, which i might have to upgrade to 32gb later on. also its okay if the laptop only has 512gb as of now, since i can upgrade it later.i dont have any brand preferences.

also i want to be able to use my laptop for another 4 years, so it should have the performance in it to be able to run all my required softwares and should also have upgradability to ensure it runs for another 4 years.

Im okay with new or refurbished laptops around 800usd. Please suggest good high perfomance laptops

Thanks a lot in advance

Please help me find a quiet laptop.

Hi, I really need some help. I suffer from tinnitus, which makes my ears really sensitive to high pitched noises like the ones laptops tend to make. I’ve been on a “journey” of sorts buying and returning laptops. I really want one that’s quiet or at the very least doesn’t make that awful high pitched sound that many laptops make. I used to have an ASUS gaming laptop, but it was sort of overkill for what I wanted from it. It was heavy, bulky, less-than-professional looking, and the games I ran on it - I felt as though could run just as well on a less power-intensive computer. After owning it for about a year, it began to have an issue where it would be completely silent, then the fans would roar, be silent, then start roaring again, just sitting at the desktop. I ended up selling this laptop with the intention of using the money to buy another one. I detail my experiences below the questionnaire. Suffice to say, it’s been hard finding a suitable laptop for myself.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Budget is $900USD, the lower the better.

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I am not interested in refurbs/used, only new.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Touch screen isn’t necessary, and battery life isn’t the biggest concern as it will be mostly plugged in when I use it. I would like it to perform like a mid-range laptop or as close as one can get, like an i5 or i3 processor. However, the one thing I am most concerned about is fan noise. I CANNOT stand the high pitched noise than most laptops make when their fans are running. It irritates my tinnitus and distracts me, so quietness is paramount while still being compatible with the many different programs than windows can run.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Id prefer a lightweight laptop, maybe around 3-4lbs. However, the quietness of the fans/cooling system is what I’m mostly concerned about.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I would prefer any screen size below 17.3””, but am willing to get one at that size if the laptop is quiet enough.

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/ photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most intensive thing I will be doing on this laptop will be light gaming.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I specifically want to play Old School Runescape, Toontown Rewritten, and various emulators from GBA to PS2 at 60fps or as close as possible.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/ touchpad)?

A good keyboard is desired, especially with backlight.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Here are the laptops I have tried so far:

I first got myself an HP with an i3 (can’t remember the model) that was absolutely terribly loud. Opening an internet browser, or really just sitting at the desktop would make its fans scream at me.

I then tried a Nimo laptop that used an intel N100 chip. Not only was it extremely slow, but the cooling system seemed not-so-great as the laptop would get really hot, like almost painful to the touch, and the fan would make this very high pitched noise which was pretty hard on my tinnitus.

I then got an ASUS Vivobook with a snapdragon processor. It was blissfully quiet, and while doing some work on it, the fans only kicked up a little. However, as i’m sure some of you already know, ARM operating systems aren’t compatible with ANYTHING. I had a lot of trouble getting my presumably simple games to run, as well as finding out that other software wouldn’t function with it as well, especially older programs. I decided to quickly return it to avoid future headache.

I then got myself the laptop I’m currently using, which was also an ASUS vivobook but with an intel i5 processor. The fans start squealing as soon as I do something a simple as opening google, like it’s the HP I struggled with earlier.

I’m not really open to Macbooks, as I prefer windows OS and programs. Maybe if they made one I felt was actually worth the inflated price, I would buy one. Just want to be clear.

If anyone could suggest a laptop for me, I would greatly appreciate it. I currently have my eyes set on a Lenovo Thinkpad next, but have heard mixed reviews. I’ve been told that Thinkpads are extremely quiet and fantastic, while others have discussed tinnitus-like noises coming from the fans. Any insight will be heavily appreciated.

Stressed out trying to find a new laptop

Hey,

I am frustrated on trying to buy a new laptop. I keep getting bad units and having to return them constantly I just bought a ASUS Vivobook Pro. I love the hardware but it sucks so bad. For a 1.3k laptop it lags like shit and it hooks up often when loading stuff. It has a 3050 and oled screen which is what I want. I can’t stand lcd backlight bleed on lcd laptops and that one has an oiled screen. I had a MacBook Pro before and it was the best laptop ever. But I couldn’t run anything because it wasn’t the silicon chip made compatibility with programs hard to run. Also the lack of ports. Should I go with a 15 inch MacBook Air M3 since they updated the ram? Or should I keep looking for a PC because I need windows for College. I am stumped and my mom is frustrated with traveling back and forth for a new laptop.

Is it worth it or should I just go for a gaming laptop?

So I'm an engineering student and I'm looking to buy a laptop which will be my daily driver for university stuff, coding, browsing and some casual gaming when I get the chance (nothing more than stuff like valorant, fortnite, fifa)

My budget is €1000 but of course I wouldn't mind saving some of it.

In my research I have settled on the Asus Zenbook 15 UM3504 (OLED 120Hz Ryzen 7-7735U with Radeon 680M / 16GB DDR5 RAM/ 512GB SSD) which I've found in my country for €1000.

My last laptop was a gaming laptop which was heavy, with bad battery, loud fan noise and constant overheating issues, so I decided not to buy a gaming laptop again, considering that I don't do any 3D modeling or video editing or heavy gaming, tasks which would require a graphics card.

But, I realize now that for €1000 I can buy a laptop with a very good dedicated gpu which will be ages better than any laptop I can find with an iGPU.

The question is, do I just go with this very good laptop that probably will fulfill my needs in processing power and light gaming, or should I just go with a gaming laptop anyway? And if so, is it possible that I find one without the issues I mentioned earlier?

TL;DR: Asus Zenbook 15 UM3504 for €1000 or a gaming laptop that doesn't feel like one?

A laptop just for programming and linux

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget: Rp5.000.000 ($350)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used?: Yes
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?: Travel friendly
  • How important is weight and thinness to you?: Very important
  • Do you have a preferred screen size?: 14 inch
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.: N/A
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: N/A
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: Good keyboard
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.: I already have a PC for my main. This laptop is pure just for programming if I have to travel somewhere (which is rarely), so I would only use Linux, VSCode, and browsing, that's it. Battery life doesn't matter that much since a lot of place has power charge nowadays. Screen resolution and qualkity also not that important. Actually the only important thing is 14 inch, lightweight, and good keyboard (although I can survive with a bad keyboard)

Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i is good?

I recently ordered a laptop called the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i. It has an Intel Evo i7 processor, an RTX 4050 GPU, a 120Hz LCD display with 3K/2.5K resolution. If anyone has the same laptop, I’d really want to hear about your experience with it, especially battery life.

Looking for a Laptop that is efficient and long-lasting.

Hello all

I’ve recently been on a stint looking for a new Laptop to sort of be a back-up whenever my current one decides to fail. It’s been having performance issues for a couple weeks now, so I’ld like to get ahead of the problem while I can.

I am currently running an MSi Apache Pro as my All-in-one. More like a desktop really, as I don’t take it anywhere aside from trips. Wanted to switch to a dedicated desktop setup, since I don’t move it anyway, and upgrades would be easier to perform.

I am in the process of projecting funds for the setup, which aims to equally future-proof and perform for as long as possible.

And in that meantime, I would like to have a laptop that, while not powerful, is sufficed enough to be a grade below (or equal if possible) the specs of my current MSi Apache Pro.

Price range is $300~500 8GB of RAM minimum (16GB preferred)

Would prefer SSD (more for snappier loads), but not a dealbreaker if the processor can make up for it.

I am open to refurbished if it can last at least 5 years. (I generally take good care of my stuff

Also okay with MacOS

I can go a bit higher if the needs require. I simply want a dedicated laptop to hold me over before I take a bigger investment with my Desktop Build.

Thanks in advance!

A laptop for studies and watching media

Hello, I've been looking for a laptop, and I know the specifics of what I want, but there are so many options out there that I feel a bit overwhelmed, so I thought I'd write here.

I'll be buying in Lithuania using euro.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget: up to 1100€ (pref 600-900€)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No, I want to be able use this laptop for a long time (at least 3 years)
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Most important - good battery life, then performance and build quality
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness not that important, but I don't want it to be a brick. Up to 2kg preferably
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? 15-16 inch
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Stardew, minecraft, with few mods; photoshop
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Comfortable, light up keyboard, reliable build quality, good screen quality and wide range of brightness, 16gb, at least 512gb ssd, sd card reader a must, at least 2 type a and 2 type c ports, audio jack port, ethernet, hdmi, Windows (version doesnt matter)
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - I don't know much about cpu's or video cards, but I hope based on this description you'll be able to find a fit. I don't know if this helps, but I tend to have A LOT of tabs open. Also, when I was looking in person in stores I noticed that oddly a lot of laptops are really short and long, so I'd like a more proportional one.

Looking for a refurbed laptop for school & light gaming

I intend to use this laptop only for school (no special software) and playing the sims, and occasionally downloading books and movies, and streaming sports. I'd prefer under $600 and I'm very open to a refurb.
