I'm just kind of tired of hearing the same songs over and over again. And whenever I try to like for new song, they're just kind of like mid to me. I like songs that sort of have like a story to them or, , like an outcome. But hopefully I can find some new songs.
(EDIT)
Thank you for all the recommendations, I do have a playlist on Spotify if you want to see the songs that I picked. It's called : Thank You Riot grrls! (I don't know if it's going to pop up) but I really appreciate it all, I really did find some song that I liked. And I still am adding songs at the moment.
Our first EP !!Beef!! It is out, and riot grrls, yall won't regret checking it out.
Saw a few people here like dazey and the scouts so this ones for you. This is a bracelet I made based off their maggot album. Thinking about making one for juju or life rips.
Babes in Toyland: Handsome and Gretel, at the end she says “she pulls out all her curls” and I thought it was “she pulls out all her grills.” Honestly I thought that line was cool as shit i was imagining some girl pulling out her grills getting ready to fight
I'm relatively new to the Riot grrrl scene but have been enjoying the music, activism, and empowerment so far. I'm just curious about why Bikini Kill broke up in 1997. I've searched online, and there seems to be no apparent drama, unlike other male bands who have broken up due to ego issues or royalty disputes. Can anyone with knowledge about Riot grrrl history explain the actual reason behind the band's breakup? I'm genuinely interested.
Is there a specific sound for riot girl music?
hello! im looking for online access to this book urgently, does anyone know where I could read it/find its pdf? thank you!
It's me again with our final single before the album release next Thursday. I'm of course biased but I think this is an absolute banger. It's about calling out people for their shitty behaviour (especially all the sexist bullshit) and not giving up and not shutting up about it just because they don't want to hear it! Unfortunately based on personal experience. This is my personal feminist call out anthem haha. As always thank you so much for checking it out :)
April March (Elinor Blake) could be described as Riot Grrrl adjacent- she was on Kill Rock Stars, after all. And her song “Chick Habit” was an underground feminist/LGBTQ anthem in the 90s. I had the pleasure of hearing all about her work since the 1980s, and what she’s been working on these days. Listen for free if you like!
Hi Riot Grrrls! I’m currently a student at a university and we have an assignment on making an ethnographic essay on a participatory culture of our choosing and I’ve chosen this community as my topic. This movement has always been more than interesting for me since the day I’ve listened to my first punk song from Bikini Kill. With this research I hope to get to know the people in this community and understand it better!
My research question includes: How did the Ript Grrrl movement’s DIY ethic shape the identity and cultural practices of its participants?
As part of the assignment, I would have to interview some of the members in this subreddit! Please let me know if you’re willing to help and answer a few questions! Thank you everyone <3
which artists groups and songs do you listen to a lot?
i am very old so all my favorite ladypunks are like, joan jett and shit, i remember when sleater-kinney was just a street in lacey, i want the opinions of people who matter lol
did a silly thing where we performed Fuck The MPAA over the music to It's Okay (To Punch Nazis), here it is free on Bandcamp
Can I be a riot grrrl if I’m trans fem? Male going to female?
My band part of the problem just released a new song called We’re Not Indie. It’s about not getting taken seriously or punk enough as a female fronted punk band in a largely white male populated scene.
It’s available on all platforms !
We’re on instagram @partoftheproblemct
I’m going to a festival next month, there’s going to be some annoying men checking out everyone’s outfits. I want to make and wear some riot grrl T-shirts that make them clutch their pearls.
Love you and thank you grrlies
Help
Looking for suggestions for my playlist. I’m not deep into riot grrrl so is there anything wrong with this playlists? And what recs would y’all give? MUCH THANKS FOR ANYTHING !!!
This surprised me to see! Of course they didn’t mention anything about how Mia’s death really shaped riotgrrrl culture at a pivotal time nonetheless, it was amazing to see her story told.
Mia was brutally raped and murdered on her walk home and the violence reverberated across Seattle in 1993, invoking punks to create homealive, a non profit that held self defense classes before riot grrrl shows- literally the spirit of riot grrrl come alive.
Does anybody have any other good sources on the impact? I understand what I know from the book, “Cunt” and after trying to refresh my memory online, it seems like this connection isn’t mentioned or accredited very frequently.
