Lorraine O’Grady, at 89, has opened yet another show, this time at the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery in Chicago, called “The Knight, or Lancela Palm-and-Steel,” with of course, Lorraine in the conceptual artist persona of “The Knight.” Lorraine dons a custom-made suit of armor weighing 40 lbs. along with a helmet topped with a banana palm! Lorraine’s talent for the unusual in her artistry, along with the often pointed messaging, has won
her great acclaim. This is from a woman who only started her artistic journey in her 40s, having held a variety of jobs including translator, teacher, rock music critic and intelligence officer in the State Department.
Wow!
