Did some digging and DMing. Music producer is not Native but grew up in the Suquamish tribal reservation in WA and said he drew “heavy inspiration for his songs from culturally significant greeting and farewell songs” the tribe would have an elder perform at ceremonies. After the cinematic intro, you can hear some Native-sounding vocal rifts.
How much inspiration can modern music take from Native ceremonial practices before the song would be considered inappropriate?
A medicine woman holds a ceremony to thank the Sun God for the recovery of her grandson from polio. Scenes from the ritual include: tree cutting prayers and ceremony; selection and cutting of tree for center pole of medicine lodge; purification ceremony in sweat lodge; raising center pole and erection of lodge; ceremony inside lodge; dancing outside and stick games. The ritual takes place at Heart Butte, Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. Produced in 1956 by the Montana Office of Public Instruction and the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The Montana Historical Society digitized Knute Bergan’s 16mm print of The Piegan Medicine Lodge in 2017, in cooperation with and at the request of the Blackfoot tribe and the Siksika Board of Education. Working within the Native-American tradition of the Canadian Northwest, Joe David has become one of the strong contemporary links in the preservation and reinvention of the art of the northwestern Pacific coast's indigenous population. This program follows David's creative process, from carving and finishing a magnificent wolf headdress from a block of cedar to its ultimate use as a ceremonial mask worn by the artist himself in a haunting dance that concludes the videotape.
