Hi,
I have finished Under the North Stars and The Unknown Soldier. Any other Finnish fiction with English translation that I should look into? Preferably about Finland’s history though!
Thank you so much
Coming to Finland for the first time
0- Arrive this afternoon or eveninng in Helsinki
1- Helsinki - free walking tour, Explore Suomenlinna Fortress, Market Square, and Helsinki Cathedral.
2- Porvoo - Day trip to this quaint town for its old town, cobblestone streets, and riverside cafes. Return to Helsinki.
3- Nuuksio National Park - Day trip for nature, hiking, and possibly a Finnish sauna experience. Return to Helsinki for the night.
Does this give me a good overview for my first time? Do I need a rental car for days 2 and 3 or can I get there by public transit? Thanks!
Hey folks,
I have to take a flight from Helsinki airport with my spouse and 2.5 month infant. 2-3 pieces of luggage. To reach airport from Tampere, what are the best options? Infant (in stroller) on VR or infant on baby carrier in Onnibus? Are there any other options? Any other things that I should keep in mind?
Thanks.
Hyvä ilta kaikille.
My brother is in Helsinki with some friends this weekend and they fancy watching the boxing. Does anyone know of any good bars centrally that are showing it?
Kiitos!
I guess many here will or have enjoyed playing this game. Fantastic references to Finnish cultures and habits in the game.
More than a year ago I got scam and had all the info of the person who scammed me, I open a police report and now i have a letter of attendance, i cannot attend, letter says that if i don't attent the trial will continue without me (there are 5 more people and companies invited), I don't really mind it was not a lot of money and it was a year ago, how can i cancel my attendance?, or announce my absence?
Hyvää paivää.
Hi I want to ask how easy it is to get an apartment in hervanta tampere. And what kind of contract do I need to take.
My mom and I are traveling to Lentiira and Helsinki in June during the week leading up to Midsummer. My mom is half Finnish and was raised with a lot of the cultural influences, but hasn't been to Finland since she was a teenager. I have never been myself, but I am excited!
What are the best films/TV shows to watch to get a feel for what Finland is like today? I've seen lots of recommendations for films set around the Winter War, Continuation War, etc. — but what about regular, everyday Finland? I recently watched Heavy Trip, which was bonkers, and Tom of Finland, which was devastating.
To be clear, I'm not discounting historical or period movies/shows — just looking for anything that has a good Finnish flavor!
EDIT: I am from the US, and it occurs to me how impossible it is to recommend movies/shows that perfectly sum up America — it is a huge and VERY diverse country. I appreciate everyone's recommendations, I realize how limiting my question might be! I'd be very curious to know what media actually provides a good portrait of America from a visitor's perspective.
Hei, I am a Dutch student and i got the opportunity to do a semester abroad. I want to go to Finland, but I find it difficult to choose between Diak Helsinki and uef Joensuu. I also want to sign up for one of the esn (Erasmus student network) when im there.
So Joensuu has the study I like most, psychology, but i heard from my mentor that the school kinda dumps assignments and calls it a day. So no lectures or classes. And the esn doesnt seem to be as active when compared to the one in Helsinki. But I read on reddit that Joensuu is very popular for (exchange) students. I also like that it is a town and not a big city, but on the other hand isnt as reachable as Helsinki.
Helsinki is better reachable, has a more active esn, and has classes or lectures. But it is a city, and im afraid I wont have the full Finland experience. Also I dont like the study's as much but i think I can work with it. But its still a con.
So my questions are:
-realisticly how bad is transportation around Joensuu to like Helsinki or nearest airport?
Its a lot of text but i hope you understand haha Thanks <3
For Finns: What do you think of foreigners who do not speak Finnish, and/or want to learn Finnish and you have to communicate with them in English?
For Foreigners: How do you go by with just speaking English? I guess the biggest problem is to find a job ? Anyone also here who is long term here, like maybe 5-15 years and still don't speak Finnish. Or plan to be there entire life here, but doesn't want to learn the language?
One of the most popular songs in Russia right now:

Didnt they steal this melody from some old Finnish song? Anyone remember the name?
I'm located in north-eastern part of Finland and we're experiencing the first of hopefully many to come warm summer days. Bros and brodettes, let's enjoy this now after the long and awful last winter!
Yep. I really made a whole post about the odd and rare weather phenomenon called "a warm sunny day" 😂.
I have a few vintage audio items (cassette players mainly) that I want repaired. Does anyone know someone who knows someone etc. who is highly specialized in vintage electronics?
I would really appreciate people sharing a bit of info too you specifically had something repaired well.
Helsinki region preferred.
Huge thanks in advance!
I graduated from a Finnish university and have been working full-time in Finland for a year. Now that I'm losing my job and thinking of taking an integration course, I'm considering applying for a job seeker residence permit since I graduated from here. Will I be eligible for unemployment benefits or integration course benefits?
We are going by train today, and I wanted to know if it‘s a big problem if we drink in there!?
Thanks
EDIT: Thank you so mich for all the answers :)
This small town gave me a start for the life in Finland, which I am grateful for. Do you know this town?

Hi,
Now that we have this great weather I wanted some recommendations for places with nice summer terraces or just nice locations by the lake/water around the capital area 😊☀️👙🍉🕶️
Thanks!
I might have a chance to live in Vantaa, Helsinki this August. I'm looking for HOAS housing that is available for just 3 weeks in August near Metropolia Myyrmäki campus. A place in the crowded city center would also be nice if it's not too far from there. I'm on a budget, so I need accommodation that is affordable as possible. If you have other recommendations for cheaper and nice accommodations, I'd love to hear them. Thank you!
Hi. My friends and I are planning to visit oct 7-13 and main goal is to see the northern lights. Is this a good time to visit considering that this year is the optimal solar activity? Can you suggest best months ? Thank you in advance
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some guidance or advice regarding university studies in Finland. I'm from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and I attended a technical engineering school here for about 1.5 years as a commuter for electromechanical engineering. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy my time there for various reasons.
I've lived in Boston my whole life, but I have Irish citizenship, so I've been exploring different universities in Europe. Finland and Denmark have caught my eye because I'm only fluent in English, and from what I understand, the universities in these countries offer free education based on citizenship, not residency. This is crucial for me as a US/Irish citizen residing in the US.
I've been researching Finnish universities that offer bachelor's degrees in engineering in English. So far, I've found Aalto University, Tampere University, LUT University, and the University of Helsinki. I eventually want to pursue a career in motorsports engineering, so I'm trying to keep that in mind when selecting a university.
I'm also very interested in Finland as a country. From what I've read, it seems to be very safe and has low levels of corruption compared to Boston and the US. The cost of education here in the US is a major concern for me, and I believe many problems here are due to lobbying and corporate influence on the government.
I plan to visit Finland soon and aim to transfer by September 2025. Until then, I'm working summer jobs and learning IT, which I will continue to do until I make the move.
I have a few questions and concerns:
Any insights or advice you can share would be greatly appreciated. Kiitos!
Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi everyone,
I'm currently at Finnish language level A1.1 and I'm looking for a non-online, contact-taught courses this summer to continue my studies.
I've found some courses, but they are all taught in Finnish and I'm specifically looking for ones taught in English.
Does anyone know of any summer courses around Espoo that are still open for enrollment?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Hei! My family and I are hoping to move to Finland by autumn 2025. I have begun learning Finnish through Duolingo, but I am hoping to find some sort of online tutoring for conversational skills. I also plan to study through text books. We want to be as fluent as possible by the time we make the move there. I am looking for any advice for learning this language. I understand that it is one of the more difficult languages to learn and takes years to truly grasp. Any advice (no criticisms please) is appreciated! Kiitos!
Hi! My name is Santiago Bello, I'm from the south of Argentina, Bariloche and Villa la Angostura.
So, I'm studying Literature in the Nacional University of La Plata (currently living near the capital), and ever since I was a kid I loved Tolkien. It was not until some months ago that I started to investigate in depth about the inspirations of the guy and that kind of things. It came to me that he was inspired by old finnish language to create the Quenya (the elven tongue), and precisely while studying the Kalevala.
¿What's a Kalevala? I thought. ¿What does it mean? ¿Can I eat it? So I activated my Sherlock mode, and the book seemed amazing! Kind of like our Martín Fierro or El Quijote for spanyards. I removed sky and earth in an attempt to find it and I did. I'm currently about to start the Kullervo chapters, like in the middle, but for now it's being a wonderful epic to read. I love Vainaimoinén (and not so much Lemminkäinen), and the prologue is just amazing. There's so many things that resonate with our human way of living.
So, I was wondering if there's any Literature student of Finland in here, or maybe a Kalevala enthusiast like me to talk about it in Discord or in the comments of this post. I would love to record a video also. Of course, I'm not expecting a Literature Major specialized in finnish's folk histories. Just chatting here is of course fine, but if anyone resonates with the idea of having an interview with an argentinian about your national epic, I would be thrilled!
Anyway, mi instagram is santi._bello so you know I'm not a weirdo haha. Have a great day, and I hope to see some day the aurora borealis and the inside of a giant's belly.
