Like with all the cases of finnish people wearing fake Gákti

Like these iceskaters, and when Miss Finland did it, and all the fake finnish tourist gáktis. As a Sámi, I'm genuinely curious, is there a feeling among some finns that there is a lack of national clothing for Finland that is "unique", so they want to appropriate the Gákti?
Hi, I’m Arman, and I’m from India. I’m currently studying for my bachelor’s degree in Finland. I have a big question about my name.On my passport and residence permit, I don’t have a surname. But on my city registration (DVV), Finnish bank account, and Finnish ID card, I do have a surname.I’m wondering which version of my name should be on my university transcripts. If I use the version with my surname on the transcripts, but my passport has no surname, could this cause a problem?
I'm familiarizing myself with fast spoken natural speech (puhekieli), and YouTube works great for this. But I need to explore specialized topics too, and every science podcast on Yle seems to be in Yleiskieli, which isn't challenging me anymore (besides new vocabulary).

Hi everyone! I'm currently on an Erasmus+ exchange and trying to make my budget last through the winter. I have around €2,150 in funds right now, but my essential costs (rent, insurance, subscriptions, and loan repayments) add up to more than that, leaving me with a shortfall of about €87.
Here’s a breakdown of my expenses:
I'm expecting some additional funds to come in around February (maybe earlier), but until then, I need to stretch my current funds as far as possible. Do you have any tips for managing with a tight budget? Any advice on reducing or temporarily cutting costs, especially for food and other essentials? Lately, I've been trying to cook at home to reduce costs. All tips are welcome.
Thanks in advance for any help or insights!
Edit: I left my car back home. I just didn’t pause the insurance, hoping my premium would go down in a few months and then I'd pause it.
Edit 2: I'm expecting the second part of the grant somewhere in jan/feb 2025, along with a study allowance from the government back home (should be around that time too).
Hi all,
I recently moved to Finland and am interested in opening a bank account. I've heard about S-bank's cashback system and am leaning towards that. However, the only downside I see is that they don't operate in English.
Is it possible for me to avail the cashback benefit (etukortit) by using a different Finnish bank? something like Nordea or OP (who do operate in English!).
Thanks!
Hi folks, I used to live in Finland ages ago, I was an undergraduate student. In the university canteen they would regularly have these really delicious vegetarian patties (different types, spinach, pumpkin, carrot etc) with always some interesting sauces on the side. I really miss them and can never find any recipes to help me recreate them. My impression was that the patties were baked in the oven, but every time I try to improvise they turn out badly :D.
Any ideas how to search for such recipes?
Edit to add: they were small-ish, usually a portion was made of about 10-15 (sometimes they were small like meatballs) of them with a generous serving of sauce. The sauces were incredibly good!
I'm looking for a good shop for budget-friendly whey protein supplements. Do you guys order online or go to a specific store? My nearest shop doesn’t offer much variety. Any ideas?
I’m looking to make a large purchase on eBay and upon checking I’ve seen comments about needing to pay VAT on the purchase once it arrives to Finland. Can someone please confirm if this is true?
Hey, my car door handles started freezing this winter. I had this car since February and even then with -10c at night, the door handles never felt seemed to freeze. Did a bit of research, and it seems you can put some sort of grease/liquid through handle to prevent freeze, I guess the previous owner had used that and the effect is now waning. Any idea where I can find those in Finland? Maybe biltema?
Having lived here for a few years now, I'm encouraged by my company, family etc to get the Flu Vaccine each year. In the UK it was only over 65 that people really got it. I tend to get it now but I'm wondering what everyone else here does. Any reason the UK doesn't push it?
Thinking of studying a PhD at some of the universities in Finland. Because they're isn't PhD friendly accommodation owned by the universities, thinking of getting an apartment for myself as I have spent a few years saving up money as an international student. Lumo.fi seems to popping up, but looking at trustpilot the website does not seem to exist which makes me question if the website is trustworthy or not. Any help pointing me to renting would be great thanks.

The days are getting shorter, the sun is fading, the cold is increasing, and the first snow has fallen.
I’m a guy from Italy who has always wanted to gain work experience in Lapland or somewhere in the north. I want to do this because I’d like to connect with the environment, the people, and the ways of life—experiences that a vacation doesn’t allow but can only be truly lived by staying for a few months.
I imagine that the hospitality and tourism sector is the most accessible for this kind of experience. I think of jobs like excursion guide, snowmobile driver, shuttle bus driver, receptionist, and other similar roles.
Considering that:
I speak English but not Finnish or Swedish.
I also speak Italian and some Spanish.
I’m in my mid-twenties.
I have no experience in the sector, but I am very eager to learn.
I don’t have high salary expectations; I’m doing this for the experience.
I’m very willing and interested.
What are the prospects for me? And where can I find the kind of experiences I am interested in? My goal is to have this experience and then leave, not to move to Finland or emigrate there, so I hope not to be seen as someone coming to take job opportunities from the locals.
P.S. I forgot to mention that I have already been in Finland for a cultural exchange during my school years, years ago in winter. Although I didn’t go much farther north than Helsinki, I loved the impression Finland made on me. That’s why, even though I would be open to opportunities in other Nordic countries, finding a chance in Finland is much more likely to help me relive the nice memories I have from my time there.
Thank you for your help!

Hi, I'd appreciate any advice for my situation:
So I recently vacated an apartment which I had occupied for little over a year and I feel that the landlord is trying to scam me out of my deposit. First of all, he asked me to vacate about 4 days earlier than my moving date, which I now realise was a huge mistake I made by agreeing to it. Secondly, I cleaned the apartment but missed some spots (limescale on showerhead, some stains on one of the hobs of the enamel stovetop, dust in sockets, some stains I forgot to wipe on the fridge door). The apartment was otherwise cleaned and there was no major dirt or stains, but I couldn't finish cleaning everything by the move out date, which I'm now realising was on purpose.
Given all these issues, he said that he would be ordering cleaning services, which I agreed to. To me it seemed to be about an hour's worth of work, maybe two, and that seemed to cost somewhere around 100€, which seemed fair.
When I followed up, he said that cleaning costed 200€, which was shocking to me. I was doubtful that it would take 4 hours to clean some stains and dust in an otherwise clean 25m² apartment, so I asked him repeatedly for a copy of the invoice from the cleaning agency and he refused, saying that he doesn't have it. I tried to negotiate with him to deduct 100€, but he was quite adamant and refused. His responses to my requests and questions are very rude, saying that the apartment was dirty and that I could've cleaned it myself. He even threatened me by asking me to give my bank details, or I won't get any money back (I don't understand this as I have been paying him regularly to his account so he should already have these details). It seems that he's cleaned the apartment himself and is just trying to pocket the 200.
Is this is a scam or am I missing something? And is there absolutely anything I can do? I am aware of Kuluttajariitalautakunta, but I'm not willing to make a case as it may drag out to a long procedure from what I've heard. I am considering contacting vuokralaiset for advice.
I know I have made mistakes, such as agreeing to move out early, and not getting the cleaning done myself. I asked him if I could clean it myself, but I couldn't as I had a particularly bad bout of bronchitis the day I moved and was in no condition to be cleaning. This is why I agreed to cleaning services, expecting it to be for a fair price. I'm from outside the EU and this is my first time leaving my home country. This landlord was suggested to me by my boss who is a friend of his so I trusted that such things wouldn't happen :/
Have a flight out of Jyväskylä tomorrow evening and I don’t really know when to arrive. It’s the only flight for the day and when I took the inbound flight boarding and take off were literally done in ten minutes so I’m not really sure how much time I should give myself.
Recently, I become a bit curious to know that what does people do for their living in Finland? I mean, I’m nurse student and I do work in hospital as a gig time to time and another job as a nurse student and probably you can guess the salary! I’m not spending so much, most of my income goes for rent then invoices, insurance, car and groceries. By the end of month, not so much left for me and I’m so curious to know, how does people living in Finland specially in bigger cities like Helsinki, Turku or Tampere that the living cost is so much! For example once I go to market and just buy necessary groceries and it cost me 50~70€, and it doesn’t last even a week! And I read news that so many immigrant are coming or already came and don’t know language, so I’m realy wondering how do you survive in this chaos economy or is it just me that I feel the pressure?
I just bought a Volkswagen Golf 2011, it has screen but i want replace it with Android screen so i could have Reversing Camera. Is it legal in Finland or not?
I am a sri lankan wo live in Finland and my extended residence permit application is still under the process. My existing residence permit is already expired. Now I have a family emergency and I need to travel to Sri Lanka. Can I travel to Sri Lanka with a transit in Germany or do I need a transit visa since my Finnish RP is expired.
Also pls advise how can I make my application better to get a 100% tuition fee scholarship. Your help would mean a lot.
My partner (not living together so this doesn't affect me directly) took a predatory loan in 2022, and he's still trying to pay it.
He says it was a company based in Estonia, and they sold his debt to a Finnish company.
What we want to know is, where can we look into the legality of this loan, and whether there is anywhere he can turn for recourse or assistance.
Edit: yes it's exhorbantly high interest. After paying it for 2 years, he still owes nearly the same amount as what the loan was. He is from a country where these loans aren't available, had never heard of such a thing, and there's a language barrier to him understanding what he was getting into. Trust me, had I know, I would have tried to stop him taking this loan. I'm just seeing if he can ease the burden in any way.
I’m French and I realize I know so little about Finland so I’m curious to learn more about your country / culture ;)
