We get a lot of posts with very generic questions about dorms, majors, and so on. Having the answers in one place is more helpful for everyone. Yours might already be answered!
For questions not specific to CMU, /r/pittsburgh is a much better resource. This includes things like cost of living, places to visit near campus, and where to buy groceries.
Any posts selling items, spamming app invites, trying to recruit CMU talent, etc. will be removed and the poster banned.
Post to e.g. /r/pittsburgh (use their stickied post), /r/PittsburghList, /r/PittsburghJobs, or any other relevant sub instead.
Differing opinions and debate are fine. Trolling, derogatory remarks, and *-isms are not.

Long Shot but does anyone know if there is an EEG headset we can borrow from CMU for a week? For an art project lol.
Thanks in advance!
Hi, the final for modern regression is literally two weeks away and I truly don't know wtf is going on in the class. I am trying to go through the lecture notes but they are extremely confusing, and this year they don't have any practice exams so I don't even know where to start. Any good videos or courses online that could walk me through the concepts, pls let me know, or just any tips on how to go about learning this all would be very much appreciated. Help a brother out, thanks.
Hi people from CMU, I’m currently applying for the MCDS and MSAII programs of CMU. However, I’m confused if having 2 different videos or different SOP as a submission will be a disadvantage to me, should I be creating a same video or SOP for both the program while mentioning that I’m applying for “MCDS and MSAII” ?
Anyone who can help me in this matter on DM or here in comments?
Hello -
I'm interested in taking Prototyping Algorithmic Experience in HCI 05-380, and don't have much experience in this area. I'm curious what the workload will be like. It says it will teach the hands-on techniques and knowledge, but I'm curious for any thoughts on the course as well as if the course will be manageable as someone with no experience coding AI/ML experiences. I can't seem to find any other reviews.
Here's the link to course: https://hcii.cmu.edu/course/prototyping-algorithmic-experiences
Thank you SO much for your response in advance!
I'm applying for a Master's in mechanical engineering this fall, but I'm confused about whether to select MechE—Research or MechE—Advanced Study. I don't have prior research experience hence, I wish to research to gain my technical acumen. Also, I'm afraid that this could be a reason to get rejected as a lot of people who apply could have research experience. The research course is 4 semesters long, which I like the most. My ultimate aim is to Learn and research mechanical engineering integrating Computer science and eventually to get a job in R&D.
I've completed my Bachelor's in Automotive Engineering from India with a GPA of 3.7/4, and I have 4 years of work experience in leading US automotive tech giants in India office.
Which should I apply? Shall I apply for both? if so, will it reduce my chances of admit
I'm an international applying to CMU and I have two main questions:
1- I've heard internships are 10x harder for internationals, and I'm aiming for some quant internships. I have a bronze IMO medal, and I am planning to participate in Putnam, but what should I aim to do in university if I want to get an internship.
2- What do firms prefer major wise? I'm planning to either get a CS major, math minor or the opposite.
Hi guys, it seems like most of the requests I'm getting for materials is for 122. Do you guys want:
With your response, please let me know why you want that material specifically for this class specifically. Please respond quickly/share with your friends so I get get you something in time for the final. Cheers.

Will the bookstore be open at anytime from December 27th-Decemeber 30th? I'm taking a trip up to Pittsburgh and always love coming to see the campus!
Preferably under $1200/person each month, including utilities.
Either on the 61/69 bus (that stops right in front of the school) or within walking distance (15-20 min) from the school
If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
Hi guys, I made a place where you can take some practice exams. If you want me to finish the rest of them, let me know. Feel free to also comment on other classes you'd want practice for.
Is 50 too much? 55? 60? 65? What's an upper bound? Wish I could do a poll
Senior in high school currently applying to unis. I want to study math and eventually work for a quant firm (JS, 2 sig. etc.).
While going through their alumni outcomes however, I found that the 15 hires by Jane street were all CS majors. Not a single math major, which I found shocking.
Is this a real outcome or simply a reflection of low sample size (not enough people replied)?
Actual CS and math majors please let me know how it actually works.
Looking for a one-bedroom apartment near CMU for the upcoming spring semester. If you have an available unit or know of one, please send me a DM.
Hey CMU students!
I know the dorm desks tend to be on the smaller side, so I’m wondering—can you comfortably fit a monitor on them and still have enough room to work? Also, is it possible to attach a monitor arm to the desk, or is there not enough space for that?
Would love to hear what set ups worked for you. I appreciate any insights or tips :D
Why are this sub’s shitposts always so unfunny? Something needs to change.
Does anyone know does greggo give curves on the final?
How’s the 21-120 calc final usually? It is like the midterms? Also, do they curve the final more than the midterms?
Hello! I am a junior (going to be senior) in CMU design and I was was wanting to apply to be in the dual degree program for HCI. I think I have good chances of getting accepted, as I have a portfolio and know a few students and professors in the HCI program and in clubs that use some UI/UX skills. However, my qpa is a few decimals away from a 3.0, and I checked that they usually accept people from a 3.0 to a 4.0. Most of my bad grades are from freshman and sophomore years, but my junior year is pretty strong with a few B's and mostly A's. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice to further strengthen my application or anything that seems more important to focus on. And if anyone applied and got accepted, let me know how your application stood out or any general advice! Thanks!
Is it worth ~25K? Anyone have experience with completing them? Specifically any of the ML/AI ones
My friend (SCS freshman) is addicted to anime girls. At first, it started as a innocent hobby, sending quirky memes of anime girls. Now, it is full on NSFW memes and body pillows from floor to ceiling. I asked him to stop multiple times, but he keeps indulging in this sinful behavior. How do I stop him before the situation becomes unrecoverable (i.e. he will try to infect me)?
EDIT: this is a shitpost.
I want to use a windows pc for couple of hours with an external hard drive. Can I do that somewhere on campus?
I heard that there is a lecture that taught for MCTS with reinforcement learning.
But I look the list of courses but I can just find basic theroy of MCTS.
Is there anyone who knows about this?
does anyone know if greggo still decreases the cutoff for an A based from previous iterations of the class? if so, how much?
how should i study for these finals? im doing fine in the classes-- 92 in physics 89 in concepts. but i have no idea where to start...its my first time taking finals. any advice appreciated
Hey there!
I’m a senior in high school right now applying for Mechanical Engineering and I’ve been researching Carnegie Mellon to write my supplementals and just understand what life in this school is like.
I wanted to ask this subreddit what students think of the school and how your experience has been so far. How do you feel about the school overall, how is your day-to-day life like? etc. Both in the grand programs and facilities that CMU is famous for and how day-to-day life is like there. I’m trying to figure out if CMU would be a good fit for me, so any insight would mean a lot.
Feel free to write your experience regardless of major and any cool perks/activities/facilities that made your time there special or unique.
I tried to message some people I thought were active on this sub but I don't have enough Karma since I made this account for this specific reason. I don't know how Reddit works but if you want to message me (if that's possible) please feel free to do so.
My apartment's heating system went down and I got ghosted from the management for 2 days. I'm having a really bad time sleeping this cold. I'm thinking of buying a heater but not sure where from as I don't want to buy from Amazon which may takes time to get here. If getting a heater today is not possible, heck I'd consider booking an airbnb until the management responded 🥲
Does anyone know if Scotty’s market is open on Thanksgiving? If so, what are the hours? Thank you!
Nothing open on campus, lmk if there’s a near place easy to get by bus where I can get a cheap week pass or something
