As of yesterday, I was accepted with an unconditional offer for Computer Science in the University of Cambridge at Churchill College. Also accepted to Uni of Edinburgh EECS. AMA- I’ll probably do this again in a year after actually experiencing the unis.
Edit: For reference I haven’t travelled there yet lol but I can help with all questions since it’s pretty weird.
title.
ive lived in X for nearly my whole life but I’m from Y. As such on common app I put my family home in Y as my permanent address and our home here in X as my mailing address (since we’ll have to leave once my dad stops working so it’s not permanent to me). And at the time my parents agreed.
But then when filling out the CSS profile my parents only used X as my permanent address. i emailed the css office about this and they agreed that apparently this is how it should be.
Do I have to email each university now to fix this? am I going to be ineligible for financial aid? I don’t know what to do
Does anyone know what time?
Like I know someone who work in admissions for Berkeley, and he said it was an easy decision for basically every candidate. Most students do not match what they are looking for. It is not like they have a hard time deciding to give out acceptances to who
Can you still request transcripts to schools on naviance after it is frozen?
I’m from Mexico so teachers are definitely not used to making rec letters and submitting documents and all that stuff. I asked two of them and my counselor for recommendation letters as usual. That was two months before Nov 1 when ED was due. Bare in mind they had to write CERO additional letters. I am in my gap year so I couldn’t be behind them all the time but I sent them reminders constantly and specific instructions for everything. Still, they did it in the last minute.
The first teacher submit her letter to another portal that id tell her was for later. And then she had trouble creating her Common App profile THE DAY BEFORE. The other teacher actually sent it the last day despite me calling her several times and messaging her daily that week, and then she did it in like 15 mins so Im still worried about the quality of that but whatever, it turned out ok.
Afterwards I applied to some canadian schools and had to ask for referees for scholarships. This time I asked a third teacher that I thought would not wait to the last minute. Guess what… he did. Though him I understand more because he has two small daughters and he’s very busy taking care of them. Still, he sent it the last day at like 10:00pm and I almost (i did) had a panic attack because he wouldn’t pick up the phone.
Finally… my very favorite. For another scholarship, they asked for a teacher and a “community involvement reference”. So I asked my community service coordinator. I told her about it in December 15th. it was due January 31st (yes, today). I even gave her and my other recommenders some chocolates and mugs for Christmas. I continuously asked her, not even to fill it out, but to check if she’d gotten the mail to do so. She didn’t do it, and then she told me she hadn’t received it YESTERDAY. I was used to them waiting until the last minute, but this is way worse. Also, I can’t send her the invitation myself, I have to email the Uni to do so, and they usually answer in like 3 business days so i was cooked next level. But I called and they answered yesterday, so all was solved… or not? Ha! as if things were so easy, she texted me two hours ago saying she’d done it, in SPANISH. Like what?! can’t you see that the questions are in english and the university is from f*ing Canada. and she tells me “but it won’t matter will it? because it wasn’t your fault” I sent another email two try and solve this but i’m honestly done for. I was very hopeful of getting this scholarship but now i’m not very sure I’ll get it.
In case you’re wondering, all these teachers love me and especially two of them have really helped me in like… life. so it’s not that they don’t care, they do.
TLDR: All my teachers did my rec letters the last day and one even did it in spanish. probably because they’re not used to this or don’t understand what’s expected from them by colleges.
I have applied to FSU but the portal says I am missing my "Secondary School Evaluation" as well as my "Official Transcript for Invalid or Missing CEEB". I filled out my application in CommonApp. My counselor uploaded my transcripts, and I also filled out the Courses & Grades section. So what is this that they are asking me to provide? Thanks in advance.
I’m a high school senior with a 2.3 GPA and a 1040 SAT score. I’m aware these are very low and I have been denied/deferred from a few in state schools I was excited about which I will list below.
Ohio University, Kent State (accepted to their regional), Baldwin Wallace (expected this)
I do have an essay explaining what events happened during high school to contribute (I was bullied to the point I didn’t want to go to school). I also am not against CC at all, I have been doing dual enrollment and doing great. I’m willing to do a semester or a year at CC. I have around 5 colleges that I am waiting to hear back from but I’m most interested in seeing if WVU or Bowling Green accept me. I have three others but I applied before I got those rejections which put into perspective my situation. I’d also like to mention money isn’t a problem, I just want to have a normal college experience which is seeming impossible. I’m willing to message my essay if needed too.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I know this is going to be brutal for my self esteem but I need any advice I can get.
I’ve been seeing people receiving their decisions back today, but I haven’t yet. Does anyone know what’s the exact time that they release everything?
I don't know if my regions Yale ASC website is outdated but it says that interview reports need to be in by February 15 and that's like 2 weeks away...I haven't gotten an interview yet and I'm really worried I won't get one...
I got Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton interviews and got into Georgetown SFS + 2 other top 25 schools so I would hope my application would pass the initial round 😭😭😭I mean if I don't get into HYPS I'm probably am going to Gtown SFS or one of the others as I really love them and I'm gonna try to become a diplomat but I don't want all those HYPS applications to go to waste yk 😭😭
I had some medical problems 1st semester that resulted in a lot of absences, and because my psych teacher would not let me make up a select few tests, I have ended up with a C for semester 1. Although I kept all of my other grades as As and have a cumulative 3.9 UW for the rest of high school, I am actually terrified that this is going to really negatively affect my college decisions since it might look like a downward trend and I've never had a C before. How bad is this? I explained it in my additional info section, but I'm kind of freaking out!
This might be really obnoxious but I'm genuinely wondering if I'm screwed.
Have a wonderful day and thank you for reading :)
Looking for some colleges to help me start getting into a directions of getting to becoming a Psychologist in the Military, which would be best for this?
so for some reason it won't let me post this onto georgia techs page, but isnt Early Action 2 supposed to release today? I swear I got an email about it a week ago. Anyone know what time?
Already completed FAFSA a while ago, didnt do TAP.
I went to the HESC website and im going to the tap section where it says apply for tap, the site does not work.
How do i apply for it even.
As the title says, I submitted a CSS profile to CMU but I see now that they require FAFSA as well. I am an international student so I don't qualify for one. Is there anything else I can do?
I love science and want to pursue it. I have narrowed all career choices to Aerospace Engineering and being a Geneticist with a biology major. I think I'd have more fun in genetics but I don't really know what the day-to-day looks like. I have a family of engineers that want me to follow engineering. My question is how do I decide what to choose/what steps to take?
Hi, did you receive an email today from UW madison saying "Congratulations, #FutureBadger!" I still haven't open my portal to see my result ( I can not, due some issues with my ID), but today I got this email... Anyone else?
Pd: anyone rejected or deferred who receive this mail? I do know what does it mean..
It seems really obvious what a weighted vs. unweighted GPA is, but each high school calculates GPA slightly differently, so it's not really obvious at all.
For example, in some HS's, an A- is a 3.7, and in others it's a 3.75. In still others, there's no difference between an A and an A-, they are both worth 4.0 (odd but apparently a thing, according to this subreddit). I'm sure the rest of the calculations for lower grades are all over the map re: how much they're worth. Then, of course, there's weighting for taking harder courses like AP's. In our HS, for example, AP's are worth 5 (not 4) for an A, but others definitely weight harder or there'd be no way to get a GPA over a 5. Yet we see kids in here with GPA's well over that, so it's clearly calculated in wonky, nonstandardized ways between all manner of different high schools, nationally and internationally.
This is untenable. To compare apples to apples, each U you apply to is going to recalculate your GPA. They have to. It's to standardize what a GPA means in their framework. I'll bet each one recalculates it slightly differently, too.
Can any AO's give me insight into how this is done? Obviously holistic admissions are holistic admissions, and everything counts. But when I look at a number I want to know exactly how it's calculated, and if someone is tweaking GPA numbers, ostensibly the most important part of applications, I want to know details on what that looks like.
I was used to pink.
do colleges actually blacklist certain high schools? nobody has gotten into this certain college from my school since 2006 and i want to know if i have a shot (to be fair, this is a highly competitive school)
Anyone know U Tampa well enough to compare to U Kentucky? Right now Tampa is my number 1 school. If I don’t get recruited for soccer, I’ll go walk-on in the fall…. If I get accepted academically. I’m picking it because I liked the environment but was only there for a weekend and a friend goes there and loves it. U Kentucky sounds good but I’ve never been but I hear a lot of good things. I’d like to know for both please … Party scene Dating scene Things to do Safe in town Quality of academics Job opportunities based on reputation of school
My stats 3.7 UW No act/sat International soccer Will graduate here in the US, and currently living playing for Barcelona residency academy
Good luck to all of the UMD applicants out there!
Today is the day I find out if I’m paying ~$120k, or over $240k for my kid’s college!
🙃🙃😂🤪
I'm a bay area asian w/ my only activities as debate and robotics am i cooked....How can I seem less stereotypically asian??
I am 22 and applying to college again. I am financially independent but don't have extenuating circumstances preventing me from contacting my parents. How do I proceed without adding my parents to my FAFSA. I don't live with them and I don't receive monetary support from them.
About me: I'm a Penn grad, and my admissions journey is interesting because I maxed out my Penn admissions scores.
For those unfamiliar, Harvard has a 1-6 system for scoring applicants that was exposed when they got sued (from this report) - overall 1's have an 100% chance of admission, and 1's in any category are very rarely given (something like less than 1% of admits have a 1).
Penn has a similar system where 6 is the equivalent of a 1, and they rate you on excellence of mind and extracurriculars. I got a 6 for both. (For context, I was an international olympiad gold medalist and a national champion in a sport, among other things).
The point is, I royally fucked up my essays in order to get rejected from basically everywhere else. And in retrospect, I would've rejected me too looking at the garbage I wrote. I spent a lot of time on them but essentially got mentally constipated by the process.
In contrast, when I applied to Harvard Business School's deferred MBA program as a junior in college, I didn't really care and wrote a 100x better essay. I probably won't decide to go to the MBA so that ended up being a waste of time anyways.
I have some pretty contrarian takes about college, education and careers - so ff to ask anything.
One example hot take: it's very easy for international students at good schools to stay in the US indefinitely, or even work in college without restrictions, through the O-1 visa if you know how (it's the visa I'm now on)
I am answering questions on the parent section and some of the questions. If I don’t know and can’t find it can I report 0. Like for alimony, housing/food, and health saving accounts Most questions on the parent income section I can’t find the numbers for. Is it okay if I put 0? Or will I have to skip CSS profile?
If my parents don’t have retirement savings can I put 0?
Hi guys! I'm an international student and I just got selected to participate in NASA's United Space School program 2025. It's me and another student from a different part of the country that'll be representing over there at Texas.
The program consists of a two-week stay at the Houston Space Center, where we'll design a theoretical Mars mission with other students (two selected per country) from different nations. We'll receive mentorship from NASA specialists, engineers, and astronauts throughout the program as far as I know.
I was selected from a pool of around 150 top students from different parts of the country, the process basically was: developing a proposal for a Mars mission (should have an innovative nature in aspects such as rocket design or route planning or smth) that was then reviewed by the admissions committee, and a debate intended to contrast proposals and argue “why yours is best”. The process also included submitting videos showcasing motivations and knowledge of space science, submitting recommendation letters, selecting an aspect of the mission and why I should work on it, and some other less relevant stuff.
I'm applying as a STEM major, 9/10 gpa, 1500 (780ebrw 720math) SAT, quite good and unusual ECs, outstanding support from reccommenders (according to what they told me about what they wrote). Hooks: somewhat underrepresented nationality maybe, low income too. I'd like to know what you think ivies and other tops will think of this (btw I'm only applying to those bc I need the full ride, so the rest is not much of an option)
I wanted to see what you thought about this update to my profile cause here in my country everyone is blown away when they find out I got this (which is super nice of them ofc) but I have a feeling that maybe it doesn't seem that impressive for someone that knows how US univ admissions work. Would you say it has a big impact? or maybe it's just a mild improvement and not much more. Thanks for reading!
Edit: man, this place is so toxic. I don't know what's wrong with what I posted but I'm already getting downvoted
does anyone know what time UMD will release the admissions results?
also do they defer ea??
Specifically, for Ivy league.
