So, after the FAQ 1.2 the drilled rule has become much more clear, but also new questions arise, at least for me.
If I understand correctly:
You deploy your 14 Swordmasters 2x7 in two ranks. (this works of course for all drilled units, but it is much more fun with M5 units such as the elves)
Your Opponent moves their Elite Heavy Cavalry to prepare a Charge for the next turn. They are likely the only ones going first or at least at the same time as the Swordmasters.
High Elf Turn. You use drilled to go 7x2 for free. March up 12"
Now you are allowed a single Wheel "whilst marching" so you wheel 3" (gets you 90° on 2 width 25mm)
All within the 15" total allowance of 15" for Swordmasters in Marching Column.
Due to the Wheel, you are now 14" closer to the Heavy Cav instead of the 12" you marched.
Most Heavy Cav want to be 15" or closer to have a high likelyhood of the charge.
You now have a Problem. Do you charge the one or 2 remaining inches into the SMs who are going to go first with 7+1 Attacks S5 AP-2 and Cleaving Blow.
Or do you weirdly wiggle around, due to the proximity you can only retreat a few inches or shuffle to the side.
On the other hand the Swordmasters, now wheeled are looking at your flank, and can again redress to 2x7 before charging.
Also a good opportunity for SM darts if you ask me. 5 SM with drilled come at 75 pts or 81 for 6 attacks.
So, is there anything wrong in the points presented above? something I am missing? Anyone used this same strategy?
And finally, bonus question. FAQ 1.2. states:
Movement Q: What constitutes a ‘move’? A: Quite simply, if you touch a model or unit and change its position in any way, it has moved. There are some exceptions to this, a war machine that pivots does not count as having moved, for example, but in the vast majority of cases, the term ‘move’ follows the broadest definition; if a model or unit shifts its position or changes its location, it has moved.
So if you are charged by a unit that cannot close ranks for whatever reason, terrain etc. you have to close. So are you allowed to redress? because you are about to touch a model and there is no limits on the Drilled rule......
I have this proxy for the Anvil of Doom, what base size should I put it on?
Most ppl try to take the minimum amount of core possible, unless they're playing empire and/ or wanna play fluffy. That's a shame because rank and flank is cool! U all get it.
Here's an idea to slightly nudge ppl into taking core choices: for every 10pts above the minimum 500, u get like 1pt u can put in hero equipment or items or whatever. It could even be something like for every 10pts, get 1pt back for free, or for every 5pts, get 1pt more rare allowance.
So if someone plays a tide of 900pt Skaven clanrat blocks, maybe they get 40 free additional points to spend for the 400 extra they spent on core, or they get 80 more rare, so on and so forth. There's many ways to tune it.
It kinda makes lore sense too, I guess? The more standardized ur army is, the easier it is to upkeep them.
What do u think of this idea? Maybe good for a friendly game to encourage off-meta lists?
Been looking through the novels and short stories for Age of Sigmar's Ironjawz and Kruelboyz and 40k's Orks but something just occurred to me while looking through Warhammer Fantasy's catalogue. Are there no Orc novels and short stories? There's a book focusing on Skarsnik, a night goblin, but what about Orcs? At the very least are there Fantasy books that have chapters dedicated to the Orc point of view? Is there maybe a rare gem I'm overlooking?
If there are no Orc novels or short stories... that is genuinely pretty odd. Aren't they some of the oldest and most popular villains in Fantasy, going far back as the first edition?
Hello All,
Had a match against some Wood Elves recently, and just trying to get a feel for some of the rules we went by during the match. To be clear, I don't think my friend I played against "cheated", but he's been playing WFB forever and some of the rules have blended together. This wouldn't be the first time we found out something has changed in TOW, but they weren't things I could clearly find in the book or online.
Can a unit that is outside of terrain (read: woods) charge into a unit in terrain? The scenario: I had a Gigantic Spawn of Chaos on my side of the battlefield at the start. My friend put some Waywatchers inside a woods terrain piece within hypothetical charge range of this unit, within its front arc. However, he ruled that my Spawn couldn't see them, because they were in cover. While I see rules for units being shot at in cover, I don't see them for preventing charges. In fact, charging has specific rules for charging into terrain. Should I have been able to charge his Waywatchers at the start? What if they were on the other side of the terrain piece?
At a certain point dealing with same terrain piece, same Waywatchers. My Warriors are moving down the map, technically flanking both sides of this terrain piece the Waywatchers are in. I hadn't had them go in because at this point we were operating on the same visibility rules as 1. However, my WoC were within 3" of these models. When does LoS stop mattering with terrain? Is there any penalty for ranged units to shoot enemies next to them (I.E., akin to marching rules)?
I understand you cannot Turn and Charge. But if I had Turned my Warriors and walked into the woods, making base contact with his models, would that have started combat between the units? Or would we have had to just ruled that such a movement was impossible BECAUSE it would put them into base contact. Same thing with non-terrain encounters. If his Wild Riders are alongside me, can I turn and walk into them?
This weekend I had a game of TOW, WoC vs Empire, and a situation occured which following the rules as we read them seemed a bit silly. My friend's Empire knights were being attacked in the front by my Chaos Knights and on one side by a unit of Chosen. The Empire Knights lost several rounds of combats (several of which they could not even attack me back), but always passed the Break test, so they Gave Ground and I followed up. The rule explicitly says that the unit must move "without turning, pivoting or otherwise changing its facing in any way,", so in this case they moved diagonally (or sideways, later in the game when I could only attack with the Chosen).
Did we do this right? Was there nothing they could do to change direction?
Hello, Ive been using ravel plastic glue for my plastic warhammer minis (it chemically binds plastic by kind of “melting” it and then drying). I had to use a lot on one spot as I was making a mountain and had to glue separate rocks, this resulted in a small part of the wall being squishy!??? Even after drying for multiple days it now almost feels like rubber and not hard plastic. It’s still strong enough to keep shape and it’s not in a visible spot but is there a way to fix this?

Really trying to make this slaughtermaster shaman with illusion work, I'm sure it's not the best range wise but lmk what you think of my list and if my death star unit (guts and slaughtermaster) are enough of a threat, also for threats I have my stonehorn tyrant, Gorger is just fun for me to be honest I'm sure others would make better use of sabretusk since they are core but I have been struggling to find good proxy's, mournfang is my cleanup crew, I'm hoping that they can take on 2 or three (weak from iron blaster or Gorger hit) units from just impact hits alone, am I dreaming? Thanks for any feedback provided! I'm sure there isn't just one way to do it, please let me know if anyone catches any mistakes I made thanks again!!
Hello all,
Recently looking for ToW, i imagine starting a fantasy army. I already play vampire count v6/v7 But now i hesitate between 3 factions:
empire of men: my heart choice, love the aesthetic, cannons and block of basic guys but they look weak in game (perhaps it will change with the new book?).
bretonnia: close to empire for hobby, but with more horse.
Look fun to play with cavalery and peasant.
For me, hobby is important, having a thematic army, but be "eficient" in game too (aka having fun, not get crush all the time)
If you have any advice or small faction "guide", i will be happy :).
Hello everyone, just a stab in the dark. The other day I saw someone sharing covers for the Legacy factions for Old World. I'm thinking about printing them physically but I'm missing the Back Cover. Does anyone have back covers for these (or even a generic one) lying around. Thanks in advance!
So, instead of spending either a lot of time or a lot of money (or both) how does this movement tray idea sound? I'm sure someone else imagined this but I couldn't find it so here's my attempt at "orignal" hobby-hack:
Step 1: cut cardboard into the shape and size of your ranked infantry
Step 2: cut out a steel sheet (cheap roof flashing) in the same length and width
Step 3: superglue steel sheet to cardboard and mask tape the edges
Step 4: superglue magnets to miniatures
