For the first few months of having the headset I don't necessarily remember having any comfort issues, but after that I used a small haptic device that went on the headstrap that messed up the comfort a little bit. Since then, my Index has either been too tight on my face, or has been sliding down my face constantly from weight. It's to the point where, not even half an hour in to playing, the feeling of the headset will be the only thing on my mind. There have been a few times of frustration where I've almost been driven to impulse buy a different headset, but I'm held back by the countless people telling me how comfortable they find the headset, and how sometimes they forget they are even wearing it! My question is: what am I doing wrong? Here is a list of everything I've done so far:
Not one of these has solved the problem so far, I have tried every combination of the fixes so far. I still find myself either pulling the back part down reset the sliding or waiting for when I can close the game. My face is wider than average I'd say, but not small. Even with the headset as loose as it can be, I do not fit in it with the small head adapter. I do apologize for the slight venting nature of the post if I come across that way, I've had my fair share of frustrations with this :') I don't expect a magic fix but any advice helps!! Thanks
edit: For the sake of clarity, I did remove that little haptic device before all of this, it would make it so the back part would sit at the very top of my head, I've since ditched it a long time ago!
Hello everyone, as the title says, what USED parts should i pick for my pc that’ll run vr with index properly?
My pc currently: CPU: i5-4690k (not overclocked) MOBO: ASUS B85m-e RAM: Corsair 16GB 1600mhz GPU: RX 580 8GB PSU: 750W XFX 80+ Gold
My budget is something between 500-1000€
What should i look for? Honestly im kinda a amd/nvidia guy but i wouldn’t mind another amd card if its cheaper to get and better.
Mostly i play older games but i really wanted to go for valve index because i used it at my friends home and i was astonished by its capabilities. Also i wanted to play hl alyx on it, lol. Thanks for helping
I just wanna know
Basically as the title says, My Index will either start without any tracking the base stations or will work semi-functionally with random grey flashes but after a short time will lose tracking and wont be able to get it back. Is there a fix for this Im open to hardware and software alterations.
*edit
* I have tried clearing all usb ports, reinstalling steam, and a different computer.
*the knuckles track fine according to the steam vr app
I just moved, so my best guess is it simply got destroyed in a box, but now it keeps turning off and not on for hours.
I've tried multiple plugs, I've tried leaving it unplugged for a while and then plugging it back in, I've tried heating it with my hands in case it was simply too cold.
Yet it keeps turning off and then randomly coming back hours later.
Anyone have any help or do I need to replace it?
also, to my knowledge its drivers were up to date and it hadn't vibrated itself to death
Its making me fucking nuts, ive tried to look for every fucking fix on this planet and I still dont know why I paid this 1500$ to see 1990 pixels. Oh and I have browsed through steam vr settings more than you can possibly imagine.. Can anyone kindly help me?
Windows 11, NVIDIA 1060
This is happening especially while in game apparently.
PC Specs:
OS: Arch Linux with KDE Desktop and Wayland CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Radeon RX 6950 XT, 16GB Mainboard Asus Prime X570-PRO RAM DDR4-RAM - 16GB 3200MHz
I was so hyped, but I am pretty sad right now, because it's just not working the intended way. I can live with the text being blurry close up and only being readable at mid distance, but this flickering/stuttering or whatever it is is unbearable. I would really appreciate some help because I don't know what to do anymore.

Looking for some recommendations on braided cable sleeves that will keep the index cable from kinking. I have had 2 cables go out due to kinking because the 'pulley solution' creates issues with the cable twisting in air and then kinking. This causes the cable to fail over time. When I asked valve about it, they confirmed that these pulleys do cause this issue over time (they sent me a new cable for free). However getting the cable off the floor is still great and I thought running the cable through some braiding would make it more stiff and support it better. Has anyone braided their index headset cable, any recommendations on diameter size for the cable braid?
Recently, I was thinking of buying the valve index, and I kept thinking to myself that it is worth buying because it was released in 2019
Hey all,
I've been trying to set up my Index on my laptop recently and nothing's been working.
Whenever I plug in my VR headset to my ASUS Strix G733ZW (i9-12900H, 32GB DDR5, 3070 Ti), I get either the "Screen is not connected" error (213) or the "Headset display is mirrored" error (212), depending on which USB-C port I connect it to. I checked to ensure that my display is not mirrored, I checked that all cables are connected securely, I updated my drivers, I restarted both my PC and SteamVR more times than can be counted, and I even ensured that SteamVR is using my dGPU. This whole charade is growing tiring and I'm really lost. How can I get the VR headset to work? It didn't have any of these issues 2 months ago, on the same computer.
Safe to buy index controllers from ali express? Valve does not sell them here is Australia. Want them for varjo aero.
Finally got enough money to order my index Going from my half working Quest 2 to what I’ve always seen as the pinnacle of VR (that’s not going to cost my future children’s soul) Honestly can’t put into words how fucking happy I feel
Whenever I try to stream a game through Discord, it’s laggy as shit, and reducing the game quality didn’t help. How do I fix this? I use a Valve Index with FBT (waist and feet trackers). Non-VR games stream just fine, and it doesn’t matter if I stream using the application itself or just my screen. I’ve turned off Discord’s hardware acceleration since that’s what the internet told me to do, and that didn’t work either
Im making this since I have tried and found little to no information anywhere about this. I got my index around a year ago second hand off Ebay, nothing in the listing said anything about it being a pre-production model, so no steam support can't do anything. But I wanted to know if anyone else has also had a pre-production model and what their experiance was like with it. Since it wont get anymore firmware updates, it seems to get less and less usable as time goes on. I wanted to ask for anyones opinion on what I should do to be able to use it, or am I cooked and should wait for the deckard? (And no I cant return it, shipping would be to much)
I'm using pipewire, the HMD shows up in aplay -L as an nvidia hda output, but does not show up in pavucontrol/alsamixer as an output. The microphone works fine.
When steamvr is open I can use aplay -D to play a test sound, which works despite it not showing as a device.
feel free to ask for more system information (3060ti, r7 2700) I've added the steamvr kernel rules with no real noticable change.
smaller, less pressing issue is i get frame drops/tracking stutters and im not sure why, could that be a cpu/reflective surface issue?
I want my WMR to behave like vives. Everywhere i ask i get zero answers. I tried steams rebinding system but it has to be on a per game basis and the UI for every game is different. I want a one size fits all type of emulation
One morning, about 1-2 months ago my headset decided to just not work and would not show light. Then I tested it on separate computers, and plugged it into the wall but nothing worked. So I contacted steam support and they said it was the tether, but I want to verify if it is indeed the cable. How would I test, and is there anybody that could fix it if it’s not that.
I decided to play some VR again after a couple months from doing a factory reset on my PC. I noticed that my microphone wasn't working with the boiz in discord once I changed my speaker input device to the valve index headset so I can hear things. I dug a bit deeper and found out that anytime I switch the speaker input device from any app or the sound control panel, the microphone would just stop working. I've been trying to troubleshoot this crap for such a long time now, I need some help please. I've tried a bunch of things like reinstalling steamVR, fooling around by changing the default device between the microphones and headphones, reinstalling the device itself and more. Nothing seems to work and it's annoying. Nothing is broken since everything does function, I just think it's a internal thing that I can't figure out or something.
If you have any ideas, please let me know!
Bought a used Index recently and when I went to set it up I found that I was missing the cable that goes: FROM - the AC power bricks for the base stations TO - the base stations themselves Basically, the cables that are 5.5x2.1mm DC barrel jacks on one end, and the 2-pin square (Molex?) pins on the other end.
Anyone know where I can buy those cables? I don't want to buy entire DC adapters again just to power the base stations, it just seems wasteful to me.
So due to the Most recent Nvidia Driver causing a blue Screen when trying to change the Refresh rate of my Index via the settings menu, I would like to know how to change it via a configuration file if at all possible. Thank you.
so Ive had my Index Headset disconecting every now and then and it worked to just reset headset fro a while, but now that doesnt seem to work either and when it happens it also seems like theres a posibility that my entire pc will freeze, and it sometimes gets flickering pixels with pop sounds from the speakers, so looking at what others said when the problem was poted here, I need to get a new cabel, but is it recomended to get the official Valve teather, or a non-Valve one since I saw that the former just doesnt seem to last too long?
Most of my library works fine except for: into the radius 2 (the first one works though!), metro awakening, and metal hellsinger vr. OpenXR is set to steamvr (I can't even change it if I wanted to). Re-installed steam vr so far to no avail. wth?
Just as the title says - Is "Lenovo Legion T5 i7-14700KF RTX 4070 Super" Compatible with Valve Index?
Just yesterday this issue started and I have no idea why. The controllers seem to be just completely messed up software wise and are causing most games to crash and the ones that don't, result in the hands being sucked into a ball pretty much. Not too sure how to describe this issue other than that. Interestingly, if I go into steam vr settings / controller / test controller, it appears to recognise the controller and it's inputs. Also if I start some games with the controllers turned off, it runs fine, but the second I turn on the controllers it crashes.
This is from Disasembly, but the same happens in steamvr home and other apps games
