For discussion of the Valve Index.

Once upon a time a guy could easily navigate his Windows desktop in SteamVR and launch applications through the HMD while using a mouse or even the Menu button on the headset.
Now, if it works it's so very hit or miss.
I am on a new system and I don't recall if these issues started on my old PC, so not ruling that out.
To give a brief explanation of my situation, about three years ago, I got a quest 2 during its glory days. it is served me very well, but Maddie keeps on pushing out software updates that’s making it harder and harder to use. on top of that, I don’t like that the PCVR side of Meta is Windows only. And well, the whole Windows 10 and Windows 11 fiasco is another discussion itself.
Because I’m planning on spending quite a bit of money on getting an upgrade upgraded PC that has a display port, I’m trying to see if I can save some money by buying a used headset off of eBay. Generally speaking, is this a good idea?
Hey All! If you want to watch the video review, see the link here https://youtu.be/3_lcHLX_-mk
But this is reddit, so I am going to write it out as well.
The BASICS
The atmosphere, lore, and overall design are spot-on for Alien fans. Playing as Zula Hendricks in a creepy research facility felt true to the franchise, and the motion tracker works beautifully in VR, adding tension in all the right ways. The story is engaging, and Survios nailed the Xenomorph animations—they’re creepy and incredibly lifelike. The Xenomorphs themselves are the true highlight of the game. They are fun to fight, they way they crawl around and line up attacks feels pretty organic, and each one seems to have a mind of its own.
Combat is good enough. By default, there is an ADS system turned on that locks the gun to your eye to help stabilize the weapons, it's kind of like a virtual stock, and feels similar to the super rifles in the RE games. I wasn't a huge fan of this setting, it felt a bit too strong. The shotgun and revolver feel great without it, but the rifle almost needs it to be effective. Its recoil is a little nuts, and its kind of hard to be accurate with the gun, but accuracy isn't too important in this game. Ammo scarcity forces you to use all your tools, which I liked. There are also some fun gadgets, like deployable mines and a welding torch for cutting through doors.
The sound design? Phenomenal. The iconic blip of the motion tracker, rifle sounds, and eerie ambient noises are all there. It’s a dream for any Alien fan.
The game leans heavily on random Xenomorph spawns, which can feel like filler rather than adding meaningful challenge. After awhile I get tired of these random spawns. They don't really ever stop and sometimes I just wanted to look for ammo to explore the world a bit, but there is also this timer in the back of your head saying ALIEN COMING SOON. And it just seems to waste your resources.
THE BAD
Recommendation
I think this is worth it, as long as the devs for sure fix the save bug I encountered. The game is an awesome addition to the Alien franchise and a worthy VR game. The length is just a tad short for the price, but overall its a quality experience with some really memorable moments. Combat is good enough, and the Aliens are menacing, and a lot of fun to fight.
On my 2nd index at this point, screen constantly flashes gray as if I'm losing tracking. I've changed every port my index is plugged into, moved around my base stations, replaced my base stations, uninstalled and reinstalled SteamVR and every game I'm trying to play to no avail. My first one I just replaced the cord and it worked fine for a little while, but then went back to business as usual. I just bought my new refurbished headset from tundralabs and it's having the same issue after less than 3 months. Any fix? Anyone else experienced this?
I read that no more MUX from bios but Advanced Optimus is enabled. Does this mean that index valve would work with this laptop? It's so expensive I'd like to know before purchasing. I'm looking at the RTX 4070 version.
I know you should never use the word “for sure” when discussing valve products, and its always a gamble. But based on what we are seeing with leaks, and their history of releasing products a couple months after the leaks is it safe to say the index is coming soon? Really thinking of returning this Quest3 so i can get the Deckard instead since i am a pcvr only guy and the quest3 is not that great imo.
There are a few games that lag really badly whenever I press the home button on my Valve controllers to check Spotify, Google, Discord, etc.
please help really annoying thanks.
I’m basically at the point where if Valve doesn’t do a reveal by the end of CES, I feel like I will cave 😭 Anyone else feel this way? I’m probably dumb and should just throw in the towel and NOT wait any longer.
Hi everyone sorry if this is an annoying question especially since it is in an index subreddit but I haven’t found a good general vr channel yet. I’m fairly new to vr and have a quest 2. I only play pc vr stuff with it; the wireless aspect is awesome but I do hate how it doesn’t natively run steam vr and how you have to have like 4 different apps running to make it work well. I have been wondering if the index would be a good choice for me since steam vr is where I want to be playing at anyhow, and would be nice to be able to plug in and roll. I just want I ask how it stacks up now-a-days since it’s older and is still a steep price tag. Would be better off waiting, or going with something different altogether. Just would like some input before spending too much money lol. Thanks everyone!
They see to be a little loose and I believe has been causing senor issues such as if I grab something in game it won't let go till I do a grabbing motion a bunch of times. Any suggestions or am I cooked?
Hey reddit, does anyone have a relative time frame on when i can expect this? I ordered it around 1pm Thursday, only asking due to me leaving for a family trip this Saturday and am worried I might not be able to grab it once it arrives, Thanks!
Ahh yes, the Valve Index is still out of stock.
I've checked literally every single day since September to see if the Valve Index is in stock and it STILL isn't. Are the scalpers just buying the Index every single time the Index is out of stock just to make money off of it? You all will probably say "YoU SHoUldN't GeT ThE ValVe INdeX In 2024!!!!11111" which is kind of overexaggerating but it's good enough. I just kind of wanted to get it for a family member who really likes VR and has SteamVR on his PC just incase he is able to get a good enough headset for PCVR. So I've been searching and saw a Valve Index on Amazon and on eBay. Which one should I get it from and if none then why?
So i upgraded to 4080S and trying to run some older VR games at 120hz with 200% supersampling so i have nice and smooth picture.
But i realized with increasing reprojection the GPU utilization falls down drastically and basically causing more reprojection?
Why does it happen? It does not happen when i force synchronouse reprojection (utilization stays high) with fixed framerate (50% reprojection).
Can anyone help me solve this or help me understand how reprojection is implemented? I use fpsVR to see reprojection and utilization.
My right controller turns on, then gets to the green light and turns off randomly. It's fully charged, and I've tried repairing it to my headset, but that didn't work. Support just told me to perform the fun and very easy hard reset that no one seems to know how to actually do. Has anyone got anything for how to do it?
I just purchased a valve index second hand. I saw it being used with the guy's computer but now that I'm trying to get it set up I keep getting this error. This makes me think that it has something to do with my laptop.
I am using a USB-C to Displayport adapter that supports 4k 60 hz. The USC-C port I plugged it into has the D and thunderbolt etched above it. Any ideas what's going on?
I've also updated my NVIDIA graphics drivers and am on the most recent update of windows 11. It's an ASUS TUF Dash F15.
Either my vision is going bad or I need new lenses.
I wear glasses with my index and before it was fine. I haven't touch my vr in a year or 2 and now it seems blurry.
Any help?
Thanks.
I bought my index 4 days ago and it worked very well for a while. Today I wanted to play Hard Bullet and Glade and Sorcery, but the image was stuck. I had fps drops. When I turned, the image stood still, and sometimes I had a black screen. When I'm in steamVR HOME, everything works fine. I have no idea why this is happening.
ps. Sorry for my English
I followed previous posts on Sound properties and even reinstalling steam. I also did attempt to switch ports on from 2.0 usb to 3.0 usb with no result. I also did remove the drivers for it and reinstalled but zero audio.
Am running a 3070 RTX GPU. Thoughts?
Hi!
My 2070 decided to retire so I need a new gpu. What would you recommend? I don't really have a budget but paying over 1k seems kinda alot for a gpu.
This night was laying down watching YouTube through ovr toolkit. A few times the displays faded to black like I was blinking my eyes. After that happened a fire times my headset faded to black and stayed dark. The displays were fully off. The two LEDs on tho outside of the headset were red and restarting steam vr didn’t help. The only thing that helped was unplugging the quick disconnect and plugging it back in. I’m just wondering if there’s something wrong with the headset or cable that I should keep an eye out for or be whare of. I use turn signal and make sure my cable is untwisted when I’m done every time and I’ve only used the index for 986 hours. Any info helps.
Thanks.
Whenever I open the menu in my index, my PC has a stroke. USB devices getting disconnected and reconnected, Bluetooth devices get disconnect, and I lose tracking. I've tried a couple things suggested like updating my bios which was apparently only one version behind and the latest version was in 2022, or switching my pcie gen to a lower one but apparently that's not even an option in my bios settings, because I checked everywhere. I own a pre built Walmart PC with not so good reviews here's the specs: Motherboard/name of the pc: G10dk GPU: rtx 3060 CPU: ryzen 7 5700G Gaming chair: some red Respawn gaming chair idk
I just bought an index and was wondering where would the best spot for my basestations go? Or is there a better way to situate things in my room for more playspace. My room is pretty small but my bed can be easily folded up in the door area for a non permanent space solution. I was thinking basestations in the purple circles? (2.0's if that matters)
So my base station that I've had for a little while now suddenly started blinking red as on SteamVR it said something about an internal error. I tried unplugging and plugging back in of course. Resetting pc, uninstalling SteamVR and everything but nothing fixes it.
SteamVR still connects to the base station as I can see the channel its currently on and also change that which I tried but it never lights up blue in SteamVR.
I took out the camera as well on my phone to check and the 2 lasers inside are still lighting up red and the motor is running.
When I plug it in it turns blue, blinks for a bit then green and then about 10 seconds after turns red and blinks.
Does anyone have any clue how to fix this if its possible?
I discovered an issue that when mirroring or duplicating a monitor to a TV while using an Index, certain games will flicker the display in the headset dropping about every 4th or 5th frame. This doesn't appear in the duplicate view shown on the monitor or TV. I was able to confirm it affects What the Bat and Beat Saber but does not affect the SteamVR home environment, Alyx, Pistol Whip or Job Simulator. It doesn't seem to matter which Displayport I have going and the issue only happens when you mirror your desktop onto a TV, not if you extend onto it as a second monitor. The TV was connected by an HDMI but I'm not sure if that mattered.
Of course this happened when I had friends over to play with the Index, I had never experienced it before that, and didn't figure it out until the next day.
I have no idea why it does this and don't need a fix, but it took me long enough to figure out that I wanted to post the issue for anyone with the same problem in the future. Seems like a common enough configuration that it should have come up before but I couldn't find any bug reports or troubleshooting posts describing this exact issue.
Your Index isn't broken (probably) and cables are fine (probably) it's just that something about duplicating your desktop while running an Index makes some games mad. Switch to extend desktop to the second display instead and it should resolve itself.
So as the title says.
I used my Index last weekend on Friday and it worked fine. Then on the Saturday I either had the display working and no audio or I had no display but the audio worked.
I thought it could be the tether, which I ordered a new one and I still have the same issue. I have updated all drivers as well. The bluetooth also syncs to both stations when I have the display showing but not when I have the audio.
I have tried to resync everything as well
I was replacing my head strap when I lost one of the face gasket screws and I was wondering where I could find a new set of screws to replace the one I lost, tried looking everywhere I could think of and I couldn't find anything that matched the screws I still got, help me please.
