I just received my index kit 5 days ago and I am getting shaky controllers whenever I'm in VR. This is my first time ever using a index so can someone please tell me if this is normal or how to fix it.
Has anyone bought one of those sideways head straps? I can't stand the front to back strap that makes a dent in your hair lol, plus I think it might be more comfortable with a side to side strap. I only see one model, a huge thick one online for like $30 that comes with a counterweight that I don't need.
Any recommendations?
So my left valve index controller keeps flying away but if I stop moving it, it will stay in place. I use my quest 2 with my controllers and fbt. So, I know it is not my base stations. It's just only my left controller that is messing up. I covered all reflective surfaces etc. Any idea how to fix this? Steam said they couldn't help because I have an unsupported setup. It's only been a month since I've got these controllers. :(
So my left controller won’t charge and anytime I plug it up everything else stops working?
For example, my trackers and my right controller were charging in the same port because I have an adapter that connects the cords together, as soon as I plugged up my left controller everything else stopped charging and when I unplugged it everything started working again.
I’m so frustrated, this happened to me a while back ago with my RIGHT controller and I had to get a new one but I’m genuinely wondering what is the cause of this??
I tried charging my left one somewhere else and it still didn’t charge and my computer kept saying “device needs stronger port” or something along the lines of that..
So I’m coming here to try to see if i can get some help because I looked literally everywhere and reddit is my last resort to see if I can possibly get my issue resolved :(
Will this laptop work with the index using a port adaptor?
When I try to move forward, I will move at about half the speed that I can move in any other direction that I push the joystick in. Is there any way to fix this? Or do I just have to buy a new controller
so I think something broke and got jammed under the trigger on my left controller because now it doesn't press all the way down and make the click it just presses about half way, it still functions, I'm hoping theres a way to get into it and unjam it but i have no idea how
So the main issue is the usb not being detected? When I first bought the index I tried it on the motherboard I had then It didn't connect at all, next I tried to use my brothers motherboard to see if that fixed it and luckily there was a single usb port on the board that worked! anyway I've just upgraded my parts to an am5 motherboard and 7800x3d and It's doing it again no matter what It won't get detected on steamvr I've tried every single usb port even the usb pcie I have there nothing works Is there something I'm missing I've gone through heaps of other posts having this issue most of them get solved by getting a new cable but It seems quite difficult to get one. I have not seen anyone else have the issue of it working in a single usb port but no other, I should also mention with that usb port that was working I had to do It in a certain way so first I'd connect the power then connect the dp lastly the usb as long as it was in the working usb port it would work but if I had to reset the pc I'd have to do that process again. Anyway thanks for reading this do let me know if I'm doing something wrong :)
I've had my index for years and it's struggling to stay alive right now. I got new knuckles like a year ago and I really like them and still want to use them. am I better off getting another index? or wait for a new headset to be released? or is there a better headset? i was hoping for something with facial tracking that easily let's me use my lnuckles/vive trakers with it? I'm guessing it would have to be compatible with the same basestations/lighthouses. i dont care as much about specs but i dont want the visual differencd to be too extreme. any info is greatly appreciated!! thanks :)
Hello! The right index controller keeps Turing off after about 10-11 seconds. I recently just got a new left controller for my girl from valve and now the right one just keeps turning off.. I have a video posted below of what happens

Hey all, I just bought an Index for a really great price, but the left controller refuses to power on at all if unplugged. The controller seems to be taking a charge and displays a white light, but as soon as I remove it from the cable it shuts down and will not power on no matter what.
I’ve tried all of the basic fixes including attempting to hard reset it, which won’t work as it won’t power on when unplugged, trying five different power sources and cables, and updating the controllers firmware while plugged into my pc. Am I out of luck?
I talked to Steam support and as expected the warranty has expired and they do not offer refurbished controller replacements anymore. Does anybody have any other suggestions I could try? If not I think I’m gonna purchase a battery replacement and fix it myself.
When I'm adjusting brightness in VR, when I have the option at 160% (actively moving the setting) it is very bright, but when I let go of the selection it instantly becomes darker (still at 160%). I figure this is normal behavior but wondering why it does this?
I have a fairly big space for my VR shenanigans, Probably.. 14 x 26. I currently have 3 base stations pointed to the center of the play space, but it seems like one or two trackers goes missing. If I pull up the steam overlay I can see all 9 trackers, but one or two will occasionally shoot off into oblivion, the steam vr program will say they're occluded and not tracking but it's a very open space and seems unlikely. When the trackers sit in their intended space long enough it doesn't show the battery level like the other steady trackers do (I'm not sure if this is an XS overlay or OVR feature) so I'm leaning towards it being software.
Has anyone else encountered something like this? I was gonna try to reinstall steam vr, but then I started thinking it could be because 6 of my trackers are plugged into a powered USB hub, and the other 3 are plugged into USB ports on the back of the pc. No PCI extension card.
The only problem with that theory is that sometimes the trackers will lock in place and work just fine after restarting steam vr a few times.
If the solution is a PCI card, what would you recommend? Should I get a 4th base station? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks! <3
Whenever I look around to sharply or look up or even just stand still and a loud noise happens the audio on the left ear will have a brief static and then just cut out. It is not an issue with the speakers themselves as when steam support told me to swap them the audio issue stayed on the left side. I think its an issue with the cable so I bought a replacement cable and it did not fix the issue but I did find out that when I push on the cable the audio will come back so it's the cables position that causes the problem what can I do to fully solve the issue?
My lenses where a little dirty so I used the microfiber cloth that came with the headset and ran it under a few drops of water to get it a little damp then used that to clean the lenses then I dried it using the dry part of the cloth is this ok or have I damaged my lenses?
In mainly gorilla tag (this is the only game I run into the issue) only my left hand disconnects tracking and I have to turn my controller off and on again. It didn’t do this until a few days ago and I haven’t moved my base stations, though I haven’t checked for updates on the controllers but I’d assume it would do it on both
Hi everyone, I’ve recently added an option in Tomb Explorer VR to switch locomotion controls between left and right-handed setups. However, an Index user reported an issue where a specific input isn’t working when using the right-hand locomotion setting.
I’ve included a short video that demonstrates the reported problem and the Switch Locomotion Hand option:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdxRw-SHdL4&t=2s
Unfortunately, I don’t have access to Index controllers, so I’m hoping for help from Index users to identify the problem and narrow down the cause. If you’re willing to test and provide feedback (bonus points for video recordings!), it would be immensely helpful. Here's how to participate:
Thank you so much for your time
I am not sure why but on my AMD radon RX 7800Xt with Ryzen 9 3900Xt when playing VR it has issues running on the lower power setting 80 and 90 Hz but okay on the higher 120 and 144 Hz. I am unsure if I maybe tweaked something in the setting of AMD to cause this issue but unable to figure this out. If anyone has any tips it would be much appreciated.
EDIT: So with the advice of u/01d50u1 the solution was to downgrade the driver of the AMD radon RX from 24.12.1 to 24.10.1. after doing that all that Hz levels work.
I just got a valve index recently and decided to buy 2 htc 2.0 base stations since the index only came with 2 base stations and I read that you can have a max of 4 Steamvr 2.0 base stations.
however I can't find a clear answer online about whether I can connect these 4 base stations together or how I would do it. I've pretty much only ever used standalone VR so I'm not sure how these work exactly.
Will I be able to connect these 4 or not?
If instead I have to get 2 more of either type which would be better?
The PCB plug unplugged after the metal holder broke in the handle. Who knew that getting a little too exuberant would have consequences. For the life of me, I cannot manage to plug it back in.
I managed to take it apart and glue the metal back together, but this little plug is too short to get it back in the board no matter what I do. I have a pair of long angled tweezers but they are not working. Any suggestions or tips would be immensely appreciated!
Heyoo,
I’m excited to share FaceFocusVR, a project I’ve been working on for months, aimed at making eye and face tracking more accessible and easy to use. The goal is to provide a plug-and-play upgrade for existing VR headsets, starting with the Valve Index.
🚀 What’s Ready So Far
The current mainboard is fully compatible with the EyeTrackVR V4 LED set, offering a cleaner and more reliable setup - no more ESP32 clutter on the front of your headset.
If you don’t already have an EyeTrackVR setup, I’m also developing a custom IR-LED ring. It will clip directly onto the headset lenses, connects with one cable, and eliminates the need for extra wiring or 3D-printed parts from your end. If you’re new to eye tracking and interested, I recommend waiting for the IR-ring!
🌟 What’s Next
Besides the IR-Ring, Face tracking is also in the works! The mainboard is already prepared, and Mute is finalizing the camera placement and 3D models. I am very confident that I will be able to offer a complete set, consisting of the mainboard, IR ring, 3D-Parts (SLS or SLA-Printed) and face tracking, for purchase in approximately 1–2 months.
Although the project is currently limited to the Index, it is not ruled out that other headsets may follow in the future. However, I will only focus on other headsets once the development for the Index is fully completed.
💬 How to Get Involved
Join the community Discord for updates, discussions, and support, and check out the project website for more details. I’d also love your input through a short survey, which will guide future development and launch plans.
The project is fully open source. You can either have the PCB/3D-Prints produced yourself, for example by JLCPCB/JLC3DP, and buy all the necessary components separately, or get a complete set from me. The files will be made available upon completion of development.

I have, once again, sweated too much while playing Beat Saber. Last time they replaced the headset, this time (after two weeks of back and forth about reinstalling video drivers) they said I’m out of warranty and SOL. At least they gave me a link to a website that sells spare parts.
Am I on my own here? I’m not even sure what component of the HMD is damaged. Should I just buy a new HMD? Is there a comparable VR headset that will be compatible with my existing Valve base stations and hand controls but doesn’t cost as much as a new Index HMD? I really don’t want to get sucked into the Zuckerverse…
So I've had a problem ever science I've upgraded from an rx6600 to a 3080ti. My Cable Matters active displayport extension is weird. So with my rx6600, it worked perfectly fine. But with my RTX 3080ti, I need to try to launch Steam VR, let it fail to find the display, and replug the cable from my computer after every reboot of my PC. I just got another extension knowing that I spliced and resoldered my old one to repair it a while back, but the new one does the exact same thing. I'm completely out of ideas, this has been a problem for months and I have been unable to find a fix. My GPU bios is up to date, I've done the DisplayID Firmware Updater, and I've tried the displayport training modes in Steam VR. I am completely out of ideas, any help is appreciated.
Edit: Just tried DDU, still no luck.
