News, discussion, and current events for the state of New Jersey

NewJersey Subreddit Rules (Moderator discretion applies)

Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.

  • R1: No hate speech or trolling: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, sexism, & hate speech against minority groups, religions, or national origin is prohibited. That goes for language you might have used in other subs.

  • R2: No reposts, redundant content, or old news. Check the queue first before posting.

  • R3: No posts for information or requests for illegal products, services, or activities. No unnecessary violent content.

  • R4: No off-topic posts. Content must be substantially about or unique to New Jersey.

  • R5: When possible, link to the original article of a news story, and absolutely NOT a partisan re-write to make a political point. No linkjacking.

  • R6: No links to articles behind hard paywalls (like Wall Street Journal). Soft paywalls are allowed (like NY Times & NorthJersey.com)

  • R7: Headline & link format: No link shorteners or otherwise obscured links, including posts, text, and comments.

  • R8: Articles must be submitted as Links, not as a Self-Post and especially not as screenshots.

  • R9: No ALL CAPS TITLES or inappropriate use of NSFW/Spoiler flairs to get increased visibility. Submissions must in English.

  • R10: Please, don't post a help/advice question needing a local business without mentioning where you are or how far are you willing to travel, etc. It does no good for us to help you find the nearest shoe repair shop in Atlantic County only to find out later you're in Morris.

  • R11: No denying, downplaying, or spreading misinformation about COVID 19 or measures to reduce its spread. This includes: vaccines, quarantines, limits on gatherings, mask wearing, contact tracing, and other public health measures. Moderators can and will use personal judgement when enforcing this rule.

And finally...

  • Don't drive slow in the left/passing lane.

  • Don't drive with high beams on while passing traffic.

  • Don't take up more than one spot in a parking lot.

  • Don't drive with snow and ice on your car.

  • Don't shift lanes / make a turn without using your turn signal.

What to do:

  • Be nice, be funny, be informative. Shitposts may be allowed if they make moderators laugh.

  • Events! What going on in New Jersey? Post it! (But not NYC or Philly; they have their own subs.)

  • If you're rude, you better be twice as funny.

  • If you're self-promoting, it better be good.

  • Report accidents, incidents, and closed roads on Waze.

Any question on rules or other sub issues, please message the moderators.

Car insurance that didn't donate to Trump

We all know car insurance in NJ sucks massively. I just got my Geico rates increased yet again with no reason wahtsoever. I also just found out that these assholes helped funding trump and project 2025. Goods unite us only has progressive sort of listed as an alternative option but even Geico shows up blue unless you start clicking around. Please help.

How is Paterson for landlords going into 2025 and forward?

Planning to buy a multi-family property to rent out all units. How is the renting situation? Can you easily rent them out? Any concerns about crimes? Or shortage of demands before I go into it? I've lived in south jersey for about 10 years but not really familiar with Paterson. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

cozy bookshop/cafes to hang out for reading?

cozy bookstore/cafes with COMFORTABLE armchairs, sofas, and the like to seat and read away a morning or afternoon? bonus if they also provide snacks and drinks too.

alot of places have hard chairs, or little seating or too bright/loud. Ideally in Central Jersey but can be North or as far south as Burlington County.

My moms car got stolen in Union City

This morning, my dad was loading up the car to drop off my sister to her college campus, and he accidentally left the keys inside. I grew up in this neighborhood, and it's hard to believe how much it's declined. If you see a black Camry anywhere, please reach out! It's my mom's only car, and I gave it to her as a gift 5 years ago when I moved out. We are devastated beyond words, any information or sightings would help tremendously.

We need to warn Americans about Musk's illegal Treasury takeover. Here's a National Day Out proposal.

Most Americans don't realize that Elon Musk has seized unprecedented control of the federal government through the Treasury Department. If this is news to you, here and here and here as well as at New York TimesFox NewsAP NewsNY mag, Politico . While the media is not calling enough attention to this, and isn't calling it a coup, Musk now has direct access to control Social Security payments, Medicare disbursements, and sensitive personal data of millions of Americans.

This isn't abstract politics - this is about people's survival money. We need to get this information to regular Americans in a way they'll understand.

We need a national day out.

  • We can create simple, clear downloadable flyers explaining what's happening (draft below)
  • Coordinate masses of people to distribute these in their communities
  • Target high-traffic areas: Laundromats, grocery stores, bus stops, community centers
  • Focus on places where people actually gather, not just online

We need boots on the ground sharing facts with our neighbors. We can ask people to hand out fliers at laundromats. supermakets, public transit, etc. We need the average person to understand the risk here. How can we organize this? Does anyone have resources?

======

🚨 YOUR MONEY & SAFETY AT RISK 🚨

ELON MUSK NOW ILLEGALLY CONTROLS:

  • Your Social Security checks
  • Your Medicare payments
  • Your tax refunds

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

  • Not elected by anyone
  • No government experience
  • Can freeze YOUR money anytime
  • He is ignoring the US Constitution

YOUR PRIVATE INFO IN HIS HANDS:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Home addresses
  • Medical records

NO WARNING. NO VOTE. NO OVERSIGHT.

THIS IS NOT NORMAL. THIS IS NOT DEMOCRATIC. THIS AFFECTS YOUR FAMILY TODAY.

Montclair parking by Washington st/Charles h bullock school.

Hey everyone, my cousin asked me to post this on Reddit:

“Hi! I’ve been visiting my family on Washington ave in Montclair from out of town, and I might stay at their place for a few months. But recently I’ve noticed that parking seems a bit tricky. Do they ticket often for street parking? Are there certain times or areas that are better for parking? I work from home so I’m nervous to leave my car more than one day since it says “no parking during school hours 8am-4pm m-f” Also, would you say it’s generally safe to park overnight? Just trying to get a feel for the area. Thanks!”

Concierge / errand running / personal assistant service recommendations - Bergen County

Hi,

I’ve been searching for a reliable source for miscellaneous errand running: delivering things, picking things up, shopping for things in store, coordinating with vendors when I’m not home, etc. Nothing large (not looking for a moving service or anything like that), but the person would need a car.

In NYC, I’d normally use Taskrabbit or similar service for requests along these lines. But last I checked, it wasn’t available in NJ.

Most of the requests would occur in Bergen county, with dropoffs or pickups up to an hour away by car.

The requests are not frequent enough for me to hire someone full-time, so I was hoping I could find an owner-operator of a concierge style service, or an agency, whether they charge per occurrence or monthly.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you!

Paulsboro Councilman Holloway berates cop for pulling him over for running a stop sign

“A longtime New Jersey politician unleashed a profanity-laden rant at a cop for pulling him over last month — telling the officer that he’s his “boss,” body cam footage shows.

Paulsboro Councilman Theodore D. Holloway tore into the local cop after being flagged for allegedly running a stop sign near Penn Line Road and West Adams Street just after 10 p.m. on Jan. 4, according to footage obtained by Fox News Digital.”

““I’m the one that brought you on! I put you on!” Holloway yells at the camera before threatening to call Police Chief Gary Kille, the footage shows.

“I’m the one that hired you! You actually pulled over an elected official. … You’re pulling over your boss. I’m literally your boss.””

I need ideas in either NJ, NY or PA on a day trip idea for my toddler’s 3rd birthday coming up in a few weeks.

Looking for somewhere fun we can spend the day for my son’s 3rd birthday since it’s on a weekend this year. It’s way too cold to be outside so somewhere inside preferably! TIA!

Is there a reason for pet registrations/licenses other than a money grab for the town?

I could go out and buy 50 rifles with no need to register them with the state or town, but god forbid I don’t register little fifi every single fucking year with the town

NJ driving question

Serious question from a New Yorker not trying to troll. When I learned to drive 30 years ago I was obviously told the left lane is the passing lane. I was once camping in the left lane in NJ as a teenager and the driver with me reprimanded me and told me how serious NJ drivers are about this rule and I noticed wow they really are pretty good about this, definitely better than NY.

Left lane driving is one of my biggest pet peaves and I've always credited NJ as being better than NY in this regard. However in recent years I feel like something flipped and every NJ driver I run into is left lane driving. And even worse they try not to even let u pass them on the right and race you to stay in front in the lane.

Did this rule cease to be taught or cared about in NJ? I mean NY sucks but I think you guys are worse now. Really curious what happened or if this whole thing is in my head and I'm just nuts.

Protesting with wallet, Businesses to Support?

Central NJ - Hi all, we have all seen the many posts about businesses not to support during this time. However, as someone who wants to protest with their wallet, are there resources on businesses TO support and shop from for day-day items? As well as tips on how to make the most impact? I know for groceries I can shop local farmers markets and shop small but what about larger items I’d normally purchase from Costco? I know Costco is not as controversial and I don’t mind shopping there but I prefer to shop smaller if possible.

Just wondering if there’s a guide or something as this can all be overwhelming. Thank you.

Has anyone been hearing that dog in Bergen County/Fair Lawn?

I live in Fair Lawn, and for like a week I've been hearing some dog howling at really random times, and quite loudly too, so much that my dog was freaking out and family were independently asking me what was going on.

It's like, sometimes really late at night and it's just howling and howling and howling and then this morning it was going for a bit.

Anyone hearing this too? Am I losing it? And if it's someone's dog, who would let their dog howl sooo loudly for so long and at such irregular times?

It doesn't really bother me too much but it started out of nowhere so I can't help be curiously.
