Riddles must be self-contained in words. No outside links, no images.
All guesses and discussions of guesses must be spoiler-tagged. A spoiler tag begins with >!
[no space after] and ends with !<
[no space before]. If your spoiler starts or ends with a space, it won't work on all platforms, so try to be careful about that. See Automod's comment in (nearly) every post for more instructions. You can ask the mods if you need more help.
Posts should be riddles. Riddles involve creative thinking.
Creative thinking is a change in perspective or trick of wordplay that needs to be grasped to solve the riddle. Your post may be removed if it does not rely on creative thinking. For example, the riddle "What gets wetter as it dries?" is solved by identifying a change in perspective. Once we re-interpret "dries", we realize the solution is "a towel".
IF LOGIC, MATH, OR OTHER ANALYTICAL THINKING IS INVOLVED, IT IS NOT A RIDDLE. See /r/puzzles or /r/trivia for other types of brain exercises.
No riddles from active competitions.
Unless the host of the competition tells us it's okay, please don't post riddles from competitions until after the competition has ended.
No hate: No harassment, no racism, no bigotry of any kind. No politics.
No trolling. No shitposting.
Please don't Google the answers. If you cheat, please don't post an answer
Please use a descriptive title. A good strategy is to use the first line of the riddle as the title.
If your post doesn't show up in /r/riddles/new, it was probably flagged as spam. Send us a message and we'll double check it.

Every day I make my husband lunch I write a lovely not with a riddle. Last note I gave him, I didn't have my phone to look up any riddles so offered him a better thing lol He said nothing can top that so now I need a riddle with the answer of “head”. Thank you 😊
Illuminate the room with this to avoid this thin sorceress.
Hmmm
What is it that everyone has, but some thieves and pirates try to take?
I am not a shadow, yet I flee from light. I'm carved by the wise, but shattered by sight. Kings build me to last, yet I crumble in days. I whisper the truth, but vanish in haze. What am I?
Hint:
!Think of something intangible that holds power yet cannot be held.!<
A host of storied warriors arranged that they should meet
At Heorot, the mead hall, there to drink, to sing, and eat.
Heorot’s great table was a score and fifty feet
And piled with endless cheeses, honeyed ale, and roasted meat.
There first arrived great Agnarr, known as foremost of them all.
Next was clever Brandr. After, Aethelwulf the Tall.
Soon followed one-eyed Bjarnever, then Cernunnos the Wall,
Then Dellingr the Valiant and Caradoc the Small.
Dalmar the Mighty joined them next, then Eskel Aldegrim,
Then Fritjof Sigurdsson, who came with Erik Long-Of-Limb.
Then Falk, who’s called the Serpent’s Tooth, and finally, after him,
The last to join their revelry, one Galdorin the Slim.
The band of heroes ate and drank and sang by candlelight
Until the door crashed open to reveal a fearful sight—
A monster, broad of jaw, and nearly ten full cubits’ height.
Aye, Grendel was upon them. It was not a pleasant night.
Hi Team,
I am creating a One-Shot tabletop game for a rehearsal dinner at the happy couples request. There will be drinking involved but I am making them solve riddles to collect objects for the Something Old, Something New tradition. I need a riddle for a specific location that an object might appear. I have based the game on the venue they are having the ceremony so hopefully at least one person will recognize the area I'm referring to.
I am stuck on the final location which is a Copse of Trees. Can anyone think of a riddle for this location? There are other tree areas so it needs to be specifically for a Copse of trees
Privacy is a valuable and personal asset, Protecting it is essential and necessary. Find the blind exile who knew how to keep a secret, A relic from the past designed to help. A carbon investigation inside boxes Will make solving this much easier for you.
As the title says, I need a riddle with its answer starting with the letter Y. The best thing would be if the answer does not begin with "your", but that's fine also.
A slash above. A slice below.
A nix to fall. Its blood to flow.
A slaughter unlike any other;
The primal beast consumed its brother.
There once was a man, that didn’t have eyes. He went out one day to view the skies, he saw a tree with apples on it. He didn’t take apples from it, and he didn’t leave apples on it.
Loopy Lucy went to the beach
To search for buried treasure.
She twirled her way along the sand
Her face alight with pleasure.
“I think,” she hummed, “I’ll first go right"
And skipped her way along the shore,
Then married a cute turtle and
Divorced him when he wanted more
(Plus she found his lack of speech
Made all of their dates a bore).
Next she hugged a cute seagull
(Who was unhappy with this fact)
And then to get some exercise
She stopped and did a jumping jack
“Hmm,” she thought, “This way is dull”
“I think that it’s time I go back."
Jumping backwards from the waves,
She did a headstand with no hands
Then moving along to the left
She drew a portrait in the sand
Of a dead fish that she had found
Washed by a storm onto the land.
“Oh!” She cried, “This way’s no good!”
And hopped away back from the sea.
“I need to mark my trail!” she hummed,
And laid a line of beach debris:
Sunglasses made from coconuts
And driftwood from some foreign tree.
Again skipping back to the right
She picked up all things in her path
Then drawing a ten in the sand
She clapped and sang out with a laugh:
“I don’t know if ‘X’ marks the spot,
But whether gold is here or not,
Either way - I win!”
Author's note: >!To clarify, the riddle is - why does she think she's won?!<
!Edit 27 Jan - changed a few words to make her path clearer!!<
This word is a group
Add an A and you have a place

What is the word?

Gridded whispers, not a stare,
Twin marks mirror, yet don’t share.
Guides the lost but hears no plea,
Hides a vault where none can see.
Sleepless sentinel, no eyes to close,
Rakes the light but never grows.
Harbors secrets, maps no trail—
Solve my cipher, lift the veil.
On the clock, run.
Mutilated, blind.
Little human son.
Flowers for the mind.
Tea party guest
Can’t stay awake.
A model and a pest.
Boat captain fake.
Poet’s plough expelling
In neither party’s plans.
In the walls, a dwelling.
As quiet as you can.
Born in days of old,
Remnants of the bold.
A gift to the Sun,
For battles we won.
I stood by the sea,
A shield for the free.
’Til every last stone
Found its way home.
Two balls, they can reach all the way up to the heavens above. What kind of balls are we???
Just wanted to make sure these weren't so easy, but not so hard either.
“In the realm of the natural, I do not exist. Use me to gain goods, a service, a kiss.”
“Buried within, except when you smile. When the rest of you is gone, I’ll linger awhile.”
A plucky little monster, full of heart
With a chaos in its belly, all-consuming.
Rarely seen outside its nest, apart
From when a certain winter’s night is looming.
Starting with its sacrificial prey,
Then forming a cocoon of stolen skin.
That almost awful inner disarray
Transforming, so the feeding can begin.
If you're stuck, I've put some hints in a comment.
this is a made up riddle and you have to know some specific conditions to solve.
I made this one up, inspired by the horses/teeth Riddle in The Hobbit
